Review of the recently released Lumix GF1. Was only teasing about the Olympus EP-1 ^^;
While the EP1 was enticing, I've been berry pleased with the Lumix LX3 so the natural choice in my eyes was to go for the GF1.

Img ID#79384 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

The GF1 is a micro DLSR that employs the Micro Four Thirds standard. The standards provide a means to develop interchangeable lenses and a more compact camera body size compared to the regular DLSRs.

Img ID#79385 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

Love taking photos and seek the best device that enables me to do so. The Lumix LX3 is a great camera which I will still use but I want to be able to change lenses while having a compact body. The Kiss 2 is just too much of a bother to carry around due to the size and weight.

Img ID#79386 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

Like a standard sized DLSR, the GF1 has a switch at the side of the main jog dial and where you can see the familiar S, M, A, P settings.

Img ID#79387 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

Gorgeous bright screen just like the LX3. Gorgeous girl too.

Img ID#79388 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

A load of settings to play about with. Could not find any language settings so you will be stuck with Japanese for those who don't read. Will double check later and update in the comments.

Img ID#79389 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

Pop up flash looks cool. Very rarely use flash for any of my photography - prefer to decrease shutter speed and wot not instead.

Img ID#79390 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

There is no view finder and one looks at the live view screen for taking photos - but taking photos out in sunlight can be a problem as the screen can be hard to see at times.
Panasonic have also released the DMW-LVF1 live view finder which costs 17,770 yen (170 USD) - prolly end up getting one.

Img ID#79391 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

have not read the instructions at all and have just been playing about with the settings from my knowledge of using the LX3. Not too sure what this socket is for but prolly has something to do with the flash mount.

Img ID#79392 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

Small panel flips open to reveal sockets for this n that.

Img ID#79393 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

Battery is surprisingly big.

Img ID#79394 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

The charger is one of those annoying ones with a tail. Canon seem to have the best chargers I've seen which plug in straight into the wall.

Img ID#79395 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

Looks like I will need to get the DMW-LMC46 lense protector too which will cost me 2,377 yen.

Img ID#79396 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

No automatic opening like the LX3 - manual lens removal.

Img ID#79397 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

The Micro Four Thirds system gets rid of the mirror that flips up to expose light onto the sensor. Because there is no need for the mirror, physical space is not needed which is why a compact body size can be achieved.

One does however need to be extra careful when changing lenses as dust can now easily get on to the sensor without the protection of a mirror.
Having said that though, mechanical dust will still get onto the sensor. Probably good idea to carry around a few cotton buds and a blower when out n about.

Img ID#79398 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

Micro Four Thirds attachment is compatible with lenses made from different companies.
Currently thinking of some other lenses for the camera.
The H-ES045 Macro Lens - costs more than the camera itsself at 99,750 yen! (997 USD).

Click on the photo thumbnails on this page to see samples taken by the various lenses.

Img ID#79399 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

But before I do fork out for new lenses, I will get myself an adapter that allows me to use my current Canon lenses on the GF1. This page has photos of how EOS lenses will look like attached to a Micro Four Thirds camera. I still need to figure out exactly which mount is the one I need.

While the GF1 was a free sample, looks like I will be spending quite a bit of moolah on the lenses ^^;

Img ID#79400 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

This is what the GF1 would look like with the Canon wide angle attached.

Comparison with the Kiss 2. So much smaller and lighter with hardly any difference in picture quality to my untrained eye.

Nice n compact compared to the Kiss 2.

Attachment for the lens. Unlike the Canon lenses, there is no rubber around the base so be careful not to stick it up your bottom.

Snap of the LX3, GF1 and Kiss 2.

Img ID#79412 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

And now some comparison shots of the LX3 and GF1.

Img ID#79413 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

Certainly not as compact as the LX3 but compact and light enough to take on hols.

Img ID#79414 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

Screen comparison.

Img ID#79415 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

The back of the GF1 looks a bit cheap. Buttons on the LX3 look much nicer.
The GF1 lens kit cost about 79,000 yen (790 USD) while the Olympus EP1 lens kit costs about 120,000 yen (1200 USD).
I'm guessing the crappy look of the back was a factor to reduce production cost and allow competitive pricing against the EP1.

 title=

Side comparison.

Img ID#79417 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

And now onto the sample photos all taken on the GF1. Some of the settings are a bit different than the LX3 so will probably take a bit of getting used to.

Img ID#79418 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

Have only had it for a day so far and am pleased with the results.

Img ID#79419 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

Took a quick video with the GF1 which you can see below.
There are HD, WVG!, VGA and QVGA settings.
Two compression choices - AVCHD Lite ideal for playback on a HDTV and Motion JPEG - apparently ideal for playback on a PC or Mac. The video below was set to Motion JPEG.
The GF1 auto focuses while shooting video too.

Img ID#79420 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

Ratios available are 4:3, 3:2, 16:9 and 1:1. I prefer my photos wide which is why I like 16:9.

 title=

Playing about with the dynamic color settings here.

Img ID#79422 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

Gorgeous Saber.

Img ID#79423 | Flickr | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.
 title=

The current 14-45mm/F3.5-F5.6 ASPH./MEGA O.I.S. is not really ideal for taking pictures of figures - I recommend a macro lens for that. This lens is a good all rounder and ideal for trips out n about.

GF1 has met my expectations of what I wanted it to be and could possibly replace the Kiss 2. With the Kiss 2, I need to take a few shots and confirm what it looks like on screen. With the GF1, I can immediately see the effect of changes to WB for example.
Also the lighter and more compact form is another major factor for me. The Kiss 2 is just too bulky and heavy to carry around all the time.

Folks in Japan can pick up the GF1 in red, white or black at Amazon for 79800 yen.

What camera type are you using at the moment? Are you thinking up upgrading your imaging armory?

I know that many of you are into photography - if you have some photos to share with us then post them at Figure.fm.
If you take photos and are located in Japan then by all means show us your goodies. Am in the middle of working with The Japan Times on an exciting project and would love to involve you - win win all round.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.

I haven't own any camera yet. I borrow my dad's old Sony Cybershot (I forgot whats the model) pretty hard to get used to it.

Lumix GF1 is awesome so bye bye D90/D5000 (probably). Definitely gonna get this.

Nice review! That does indeed look like one sweet camera that enables you to make nice images, and with more possibilities than the LX3.

Carrying around a large DSLR like the Kiss X2/450D can be a hassle but I guess that's a factor you have to accept when getting one. But I only got my Canon 450D less than a year ago and I'm not planning on giving it up just yet for a model like the GF1.

I'm wondering if the lack of a viewfinder on the GF1 isn't an unwelcome negative element. I find myself increasingly using the viewfinder on the 450D to check everything before making a shot, like the Dof, shutter time,... While the display on the 450D is nice and bright enough, out in the sunlight it's harder to see all the details. But the fact you can immediately see effects like WB change on the GF1 screen seems like a plus too.

    Some awesome photos in this article too Danny. Regardless of what camera you use your photos are always impressive. Can I has your photographer skillz? ^^;;

This new Lumix looks GOOD, however, I'm not too keen on no TTL viewing - must have viewfinder eyepiece like wide-angle gadget for old-style Leica. using Canon EOS 10D in tha bookindian studios for documentation and Sony WEBBiE for fun stuff. been doing photography since 1968. great reviews and insights on new technologies.

I am going to upgrade soon but I cant choose if to go with the Canon EOS Kiss x2, 18-55mm and 50mm or go with the Panasonic LX3.
Camera will be used for friends, family, portrait, indoor and outdoor shooting, do well in good light.

Seems like an interesting gadget. But the lens kind of defeats the purpose of it being portable. Will probably go with a Sony H20 or the LX3. Besides.. I'm eyeing on trading up my Canon EOS-Kiss2/Rebel XTi/400d for an EOS-40/50D

That GF1 looks like it's HDMI ready too.

I have however have noticed a drop in LX3's price over here. Maybe a significant drop will entice me to get one.

Article like this one makes want to upgrade my camera, I have this old, sturdy Olympus camera which cannot take good quality pictures, too big to carry it around(I don't bring it to Japan at all), has small memory and much more :P

    Hopefully I will make an upgrade before the next Japan trip ^^;

    GF1 is looking amazing.

I only updated to the LX3 a few months ago, so I'm still learning. I like the LX3 for its small stature, but wielding top caliber photo quality on the compact level.

Other than the size and weight difference, is there a difference in quality from the "Mini SLR" GF1 and a regular DSLR like the Canon Kiss 2?

    I'm making an assumption here that the GF1 doesn't surpass regular DSLRs. However it does boast of more portability. Overall the camera looks pretty small but the huge lens that you have to attach on to it kind of kills the portability a bit D;

As for my imagery armory, I think I'll pick up a DSLR for serious quality, when I do get enough skills to wield one properly. Currently thinking I'll just go for regular DSLRs, rather than fancy ones like the PEN and GF1.

The GF1 uses a Four Thirds sensor which is smaller than the APS-C sized sensor on the Kiss 2 so high ISO might result in more visible noise for the GF1

Gah, I'm so incredibly jealous! I do want a GF1 because of its size, but I'm currently torn on whether to get a Nikon D90 or just giving in and getting the GF1. My current solution is to go with the D90 and just wait until the GF2 or 3 or something... :<

I hope Panasonic will offer a pancake lens like Olympus does... It's useless having a small body and humongous lenses in the backpack, this simply nullifies the purpose of having a compact DSLR camera.
If only the PEN would have a built in flash I wouldn't wait to buy it, but the idea of spending something like 200 euros for getting a hot-shoe flash that works like a built in one is a no-no for me.

I would like to get a better camera, atm I have a Lumix, but a cheap version, it is not good for macro pictures, and since I only have time to take pictures when I am back from work, and it is already dark I would like a camera that can take good pictures with low light, or artificial light. As a beginner, would you recommend GF1 over a nikon/canon DSLR? Some people say that they like to manually focus and don't look through a screen, do you think that this is something so important?

the video quality looks pretty nice. one gripe i had with the lx3 is that it can only encode in mov format. not to mention the lack of zoom or autofocus. but i guess that's what you get for a point and shoot. the GF1 is definitely a worthy competitor to the EP1, although i must say, i did notice quite a bit of advertising on olympus' part to promote the EP1 here. Saw an ad in city hall as well as a couple of print ads in the papers.

Would you recommend the GF1 over the LX-3? I was waiting for that comparison in your review but you never mentioned it. Also, you repeatedly say the GF-1 has a smaller body compared to the Kiss, but the GF-1 has a gigantic lens that makes it seem just as bothersome to carry around as the Kiss. I think I might pick up the LX-3 over the GF1. Good idea?

      The lenses are self preference.
For SLR, you can use primes, macros and even telezoom.
Bout would look odd using all rounder lens and telezoom on the GF-1.
And when you play with zoom lens, you may prefer bigger body for better grip and balance.

Some of the prime lens are quite small and compact like the 20mm pancake lens. But with prime lenses, you lose the ability to zoom and the only way to do that is by your feet.

Though there are a few things that irritate me, e.g, there is no image stabilization on the pancake lens.

    Awesome!
Someone probably already said this, but here it goes again anyways:
That slot on top of the LCD is for the Electronic View Finder.
There's a lens adapter available, but AF won't work... at least for now.
Which is a bummer, but I'm still considering switching to this beauty... fortunately, I didn't invest much on Canon lens just yet, and since I'm also interesting in video capture, and also on having something more portable to carry around, it's all win.

My Canon XSi is great and all, but I end up not carrying it around due to it's size, and there are several events where I wanted to make short video clips which I end up not doing because I have to choose either to carry my Canon, or to take a camcorder or something...

    Nice review Danny!

Hmm, square format shooting: tempting. Been sold on medium format film so getting that look in digital would be cool as well... and the photos look great.

I dunno, to be honest I'll probably not get the GF1 though, there's not really a gap in my armory that I'd need it to fill. With the detachable lenses it's still too bulky to fit in my (admittedly quite small) bag, so it won't be taking over from the LX3 on the everyday camera front. On the other hand, if I'm doing something where I'd be wanting to change lenses, then I'd probably also be at the stage of being willing to lug a full-format DSLR body with me as well... so it's not taking over from the 5D mkII either, besides I like the feel of a SLR/DSLR camera.

To be honest I think the next armory upgrade I'll be looking at will probably be a medium format Mamiya or Hasselblad.

I was gonna pick up an LX3 before simply because of the previous review and articles utilizing the LX3; simply the images were stunning. What especially drew my attention was the night shots the lighting looked really great; and for a camera of that compact size it was really nice.

As for the GF1 ~ the depth of the pictures seem like rises above the LX3 by a lot; especially noticeable in the outdoor shots.

Hope to see some night scenery shots soon with the GF1 soon ~

Nice shots! I like the GF1's portability and whatnot but I REALLY love my Canon 20D and should spend any additional photography money on a couple of lenses and, eventually, a newer body and underwater housing.

Having said that the GF1 is a tempting little toy!

Sigh. Such a luverly camera. Alas and alack, current funds are low and not likely to rise anytime soon for such a toy. And if I did have one, I wouldn't likely use it too often. Would certainly help with making my figs look better on screen though.

Wish it still had a built in viewfinder, even a rudimentary one. Spending an additional 170 USD for one is kind of a lot.

Looks like another fantastic (compact) camera, but putting a big lens on it kinda defeats the purpose? The price is too steep IMO.

I can imagine it being awkward to hold the camera too when you mount a big lens on it, not to mention no viewfinder - it would be totally annoying to look at the LCD while trying to hold the Lumix still for a shot?

I'm quite excited about a more compact dslr-like camera though I'm not too keen on getting rid of the mirror. The compact package is a major selling point for me but the lack of a viewfinder is a turn off. Also, I fear it won't have the instant shutter response that you find from slr cameras. The photographs look promising especially those with an abundant light source such as the sun. If theres a smaller lens attachment, I might actually look into it.

I've got three film kits and for digital I just use a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX35.

My two key rules about buying a camera are (1) no pop-up flash, (2) must have optical viewfinder. That's why I haven't bought the new Olympus.

The battery on my Lumix tends to die in 40 shots or so which kind of ruins the point of having space for 700 images on the memory card.

OTOH I don't want a digital SLR because they all seem so damn big and heavy. If I want to carry that heavy an outfit I'll bring my medium format kit.

I have a FujiFilm S5800 (a bridge camera) but I hardly know to use it. I just switch through the modes :| Maybe its time for me to read something about apertures, ISO and related.
