Japan Restaurant Coupons
When you go to grab a bite to eat in Japan, more often that not, the place you are eating at will have some sort of discount coupons on the Internets.
What you do is search for "restaurant name" + "location" + "coupon" [クーポン] and you should find results for online coupons that you simply show to the cashier when paying. Today I got 10% off the meal which cost 4544 yen after discount - about 45 USD for a hefty dinner for two.
Sometimes the coupons will come in the form of free drinks instead of a discount.
Are there any ninja combat tricks in your region to get discounts on meals?

I've worked in a restaurant and have seen people do things like bring in stacks of coupons. I've even seen/heard of people making things up to complain about in order to get free meals (these are usually the same people that think you don't need to tip).

If only they did internet coupons over here, the money I would save :)

I'm pretty sure the discount was 10% and the cost of the meal was 4500 after the discount. Therefore the discount was only 500, not bad though.

which also mean that the meal original price was 5000 :)

Coupons are essential for cutting back on unnecessary purchases such as food and buying goods/games/manga instead. I approve of food coupons.

I really like how in Japan people can use their cell phone as a coupon! Much environmentally friendly than paper or booklet, ^^;

I'm not really a coupon guy. I order/buy what I want when I know I can afford it, and I just leave it at that. In the case of food, I rarely eat at a restaurant unless someone else is paying. Plenty of free food at home. ^_^;

Nothing fancy like that here in USA :P I remember when my friends would take me out to eat in Japan and they will do what is described above and I thought it was really a neat trick ^^;

Haven't heard about restaurant coupons, but have seen gift cards that holds a certain value and can be spent in a restaurant. Though they have some limitations as well ^^;;

Coupons here are not that fancy, besides most coupons are useless (at least the ones I wanna use).

the only free coupons here are for the pizza places. not restaurants.

In Malaysia i think its Maxis, or is it DiGi (mobile Telco company) that offer such coupons via sms. Unfortunately I use Celcom and I seldom go out.
And yes, they either come in %discounts or sometimes free stuff, and not limited to restaurants as sometime you can get book coupons etc

Go to the college and grab the coupon books they're practically throwing at students.
Sometimes they only work "with student ID" but there are usually lots of good coupons without that printed on them.

Waoh! I wished we could do that... some employees of the restaurants here are skeptical about coupons, even if they are on paper since a lot of times they need to check with their manager ^^;

I usually browse through the back of grocery shopping recipts which have occasional 241 deals, buy 1-get 1 free, etcetc - Find em at the bottom of shopping trolleys that the last shopper left behind
Went to a Japanese franchise restaurant last month...NO DISCOUNT!!! But there is a RAMEN challenge!! Ramen is FREE if you can finish it in 10 minutes (with a big bowl of lava-hot soup). Otherwise, you will have to pay US$10. Restaurant workers usually give out free coupons to passer-by here in Malaysia, it's a very common sight.
Sometimes, you can even cut out discount coupons from newspapers and magazines ^_^! Savvy!

No discount here, you have to watch carefully the bill just to avoid surprise.
Here are just starting to appear too some "all you can eat" restaurant, but I found the food quality of this places very poor.

I wish we had such things around here...the only discounts we get are through pamphlets...and they are not worth that much at all....

I like the internet idea for coupons. Coupons come in the mail for free and in the newspaper. There are some online coupons but usually, they are about the same coupons that are in the newspaper or free in mail. We usually tip about $5 or 20%. I figure, if I have enough money to go out for a meal, I have enough to tip the server.

Wish we had that kind of coupons for discounts, but there a little restaurants with that merchandising, mostly come from newspaper or sort.

That would be quite good! Sadly in Toronto, they don't really rely on Internet couples for food and somewhat. Or it's just that I don't really go and search for them. It's mostly like for example, McD. They just send flyers for discounts.

The restaurants here don't really have coupons. Coupons are more for the fast food chains.
Print media/promotions and marketing
I know i'm pretty late on this response, but here they have a lot of e-mail club signups for restaurants. Most ask for your birthday and Anniversary date. So trick is sign up a bunch with different anniversaries and bring a girl, in this case I bring my wife for obvious reasons! I'd like to see them prove on the spot that it isn't your anniversary!

I don't know if it is international but for iPhone owners in the U.S. there is an app you can download called Yowza! which gives you access to digital coupons. As I understand it the neat thing about the app is that it interfaces with the GPS in the phone to narrow the selection of coupons to those business' which are in your immediate vicinity.
Beyond that I second Kamui's suggestion as those are about the only coupons I use.

Waiting for the day when I will get my coupons beamed to my iphone. I want to be able to just use my coupons from my phone and not have to print the thing and waste paper. Also a hassle to deal with all these cards, slips, and whutnots.
In the US little keychains or cards with a personal barcode are the stuff that's mainstream. It's a little like stamp cards except using the barcode entitles you to store specials and discounts. Usually the bigger chain stores (retail, pharmacy, grocery stores) have this but sometimes you are still required to bring in coupons to get discounts.
Hehe, Occupation, really?
10% off is a pretty good deal. Mostly I've come across coupons in magazines and such,
but never on the WorldWideWeb, and the ones I collected only gave me a 100 yen discount.
In my country there are no such things as coupons, the reason is because kids would collect them
and then buy the whole store. Ooh, good times:)

Rarely will there be coupons online for a restaurant. And if there are some, 95% of people won't know about it since it's just not common knowledge.
