Headphone Girls
Think I first saw this on Akiba Blog and instantly thought "Mu! Must have!" from seeing all the lovely 2D girls inside.
The Headphone Girls Pictorial features the illustrations of 52 well known illustrators including INO and Range Murata.
The book includes a few lovely posters. Not sure what it is but girls in headphones look good.
I think I can now bring myself to pay the 5000 yen or so needed to get some for my daughters - these ones from the Doll Show in November.
The book features detailed reviews of headphones that are available on the market by many different manufacturers - with each one illustrated being worn by a cute 2D girlie.
Looks like a great collaboration piece to me - the makers probably pay for placements and the publisher sends pics of approved headphones to an illustrator. Illustrators are usually paid a flat fee for a single piece.
Artwork done for a specific purpose is called Kaki-oroshi [描き下し].
In my line of work (now and at Microsoft), I've seen rates for a single illustration ranging from 5000 yen (50 USD) to 100,000 yen (1000 USD).
I know there are many DC readers who do illustrations. Do you make pocket money from your work or make a living from it?

Honestly Audio Technica isn't really my area of expertise... but I've a few friends with them and they're very happy. One has the SQ5s, which seemed pretty good when I tried them and another with ATH-A700s that he's also happy with... Two more also use ATs (can't remember what models though) that they're very happy with but really it all depends on how much you have to spend and, as dannywan said: what sort of music you listen to and what you find pleasurable to listen to.
For example: I've got a friend with HD600's which are a great headphone, but a little to veiled for me. What I like are ethereal sounding mids and highs, wide open sound stages, sharp attacks and really transparent music. However others I know are bass monsters and so on.

Other than that, nice renders. If they made an Anime/Manga about headphones, I wouldn't be surprised if there was suddenly a burst of interest in sound equipment. Then it can slip in the odd facts like type, frequency response, sound-to-noise ratio, impedance etc...

Highest i have made form a single Illustration $500(give or take a few 10's). I make a living as an Illustrator/Graphic Designer/Animator. I am always amazed by the quality of work that is shown by Japanese illustrators. Although Anime style is frowned upon in western "professional" illustration circles. I the girls look fab.

I never understood the fascination for girls wearing headphones. Somehow I find it something which makes the picture worse than if they had been without those. Another thing, I don't like headphones in general. They feel uncomfortable, specially in the ears after a while. Not due to loud sounds, but the reaction to "closing" the airflow around the ears. I bought some high quality ones in an instrument store and they are sort of ok for when I can't do without any, but anything else... just not me ^^

The book's interesting. I may ask Kinokuniya to import one for me.
Currently I'm using Ultimate Ears Super Fi 3 which I think it's the best in-ear earphones in its price range. Good attenuation and very comfortable to wear. The sound is great and you can change the cable by yourself if you break it or accidentally cut it. (Someone I know cut his Shure in-ear headphone cable instead of the paper.)

Wow, I just came home from buying the Panasonic RP-HTX7 at Target. They were on clearance for $27!! Logged on the DC and noticed this post. Awesome!! Ever since I started seeing these kinds of pics being posted on the web I've been hoping for a collection of them in book form. As soon as I saw Danny tweet about it, I immediately went to order it. I was shocked when I found that JList had already sold out!! Bleh... My art isn't appaling, but it will never match the quality of most manga and anime artists. I have a selection of Masamune Shirow prints that I'd like to frame, but they are odd sized, so it won't happen anytime soon. They are too good to just stick on the wall with tape.
