Being sad about not having enough moola to get herself a Tamaki DD in Mira-tan 03, Mirai-chan starts thinking about a part time job.
Part time job is "Arubauto" [アルバイト] and I recommend absolutely everybody to go through the experience of having a part time job.

My particular arubaito as a student back in the UK was working as a waiter at a Japanese restaurant - tough hours, low pay and challenging customers helped prepare me for the step into society. It's a tough world out there. Nobody is going to give it to you so prep yourself and go get it on your own - by starting with a tough part time job ^^

For most of my student life, I had some sort of part time job - translating or making stuff and wot not. I also worked at another Japanese restaurant in Bond street and as ground staff at Heathrow airport for Japan Airlines.
I hear too much about students these days relying on their parents for income with the excuse that they don't have time for part time work. I managed to pass with first class honors and yet worked at times until midnight after university each day - sometimes 7 days a week. The money I saved up helped me come to Japan every year to absorb the culture that I fell in love with. I didn't expect or want any moolah from my parents at all - they have given enough to raise me.

Relying on ones parents for income will get you in the comfort zone and we all know that the comfort zone is bad. Read this article if you don't know what the comfort zone is.

Do you or did you have a part time job and if so what did you do?

Hijacked from Kyourin at from Figure.fm.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

Never had myself a part time job, just went straight on to full time! started my tiling apprenticeship, only like 16 months to go, until i finish it. I don't get along with any of my colleagues, and have nothing in common. Since my hobbies include collecting anime/manga and figures from my favorite ones. they don't even know what those words mean :P

Glad to see posts from you that advise, encourage, and inspire the younger folks.

I would agree that there are far too many folks completely reliant on their parents for everything, and the lack of understanding of finances, lack of understanding their dreams, and lack of urgency to work sets them up perfectly to become NEET.

I worked at Kinokuniya bookstores part-time to pay for tuition, and as much as I enjoyed it, it was a valuable experience for me to understand that it was extremely crucial to get beyond that situation. Simple math -- tuition costs $10k, I make $10k part-time, so net $0. Worse if your tuition is more than your part-time pay.

My *only* counterpoint would be that not everyone can pull off getting good grades while working like you did...

I know folks who go to Universities that cost $20k/year, and it's taking them an extra year or two to finish up because they're too busy working part-time at $10k/year. While the job/life experience of working part-time is valuable, if it starts to inhibit their full-time job of being a student, it's something that one must reconsider, IMHO.

In any event, work your tail off, chase your dreams, stop making excuses, stick to productive complaints, and you'll find that you'll get a lot more out of life. Cheers!

Mere hard work alone isn't enough. You also need the opportunity, the capability, the resources and most important, the ambition to push you through the barriers which would have stopped any average joe to settle for less trival gains.

Of course that means you have to face countless challenge by other-like-minded people as well too.

The first 4 eps are pretty cool ! I too would like to see some future installments :]

As for the part time job bit, Ive had one since high school since I used my pay to pay for my first car a 1988 Mitsubishi Starion. (cars without power steering are hard to park lol) From there, My parents made me pay for its maintenance, my books, and my cell phone bill (which usually isnt much). Now Im working at gamestop to help pay for tuition, my new truck, rent, and my cell phone bill. The budget is tight, but I have side jobs in welding to help get me by.

Getting a part time job is always good ! It teaches you many things like Budget management, earning a living, and being part of society.

I wish I was as gifted as Danny, I can only have good grades if I invest many many hours on studying. I have a part-time job but I cut back on my hours when college starts (basically the morning shift). I live with my bro and since parents live on the other side of the Ecuador, I do other misc. stuff besides plain studying and working (like cooking which I suck at). Since I don't have a spectacular brain on my shoulders I need every hour I can get just to keep my grades afloat and be eligible for financial aid.

Sometimes is not about a comfort zone, some people just can't handle jobs, housework and other IRL duties plus being a full-time student. Not saying that I have it hard but 'm not just chilling, I do what is within my power to be less of a burden to my family.

Just make sure to pay back with tons of effort and then some.

I think it's ok to have some dependence on parents. If they are there to help then take the help when you need it. I should really stop being such a lazy bum around the house and follow what you said above >.>

I know, I realize I could just get some Cs and Bs and be done with minimum effort, but that's not how it rolls for me... in order to get some benefits you need to show you're on top shape, and personally I can't handle 5-6 classes while working and living with roomies.

lol I also think it's ok, the problem comes when students abuse their parents love and care too much and become too comfy (like Danny said, they get into the comfort zone), it's almost like hikikomori who just leech of their family (although comfy students at least study). I'm not awesome with housework either, so don't worry too much about it just do what you can =D

I only rely on my parents if I know that I'll be able to pay the money back and if it's for something up high in the list of needing money. The latest one was unavoidable as I needed to pay a lot of money for University accomodation and I didn't have enough, this money will get paid straight back.

Well, this part time arrived and I had to deal with customers either on person or on the phone so this helped lose my "comfort zone" or own bubble and starting seeing things differently ^_^. So, as Danny said I really recommend people to go out there and get a part time job if possible ^^

I got my first real part time job in University, where I did so well in my computer-aided design class I stayed on as federally funded teacher assistant, the pay was one of the highest in the school and it served as a launch pad for me to get my first internship, first part time job during my senior year and eventually a full time engineering position all with the same company.

hmm I don't know if this is a part time job - but back in college I accept programming assignments from students who can't do it (or simply doesn't want to) XD I whip up 500Php = 1k yen for let's say 5 pages of code ^w^ It was a win win situation considering I get to practice my coding skills plus the zennies - but yeah I feel somehow guilty about it XD (I compensate by explaining to the the codes if they wanted to ^w^)

Now I'm tempted to get one - and get busy with computer tinkering and stuff XD Only if my company allowed it =w=

Very recently I have been diagnosed as having a burn-out. The symptoms of which started when I was half a year into my degree, but not diagnosed as one until 3 years later. All this time my dad has paid me a certain amount of money which I had to use for everything that I needed. So I didn't need a job and could concentrate fully on my degree. Had I taken up a job the burn-out would have struck me much harder. And now it wouldn't even be responsible at all of me if I would take up a job.

I'm still enrolled into my degree but I completely stopped doing my minor because of the burn-out. In fact, I'm only doing one subject for which I don't even have classes yet, there's just this resit i'm going to do for this period. I'm still doing that even though the treatment for a burn-out usually is to stop doing -anything- for a couple of months. -anything- includes -everything- that carries even the tiniest bit of responsibility that you don't like. Because what you don't like gives you stress and that is what caused the burn-out in the first place.

So now what? I'm basically only doing stuff that I like now and a tiny bit of studying, all on my dad's expenses. Not having (or allowing to have) the comfort zone that I have, would probably have put me in such a deep hole that I'd have probably killed myself by now. A comfort zone is not always bad. So don't go around telling certain things are bad. Some things that may seem bad can have good effects and some things that might seem good can actually be very bad. Be careful of what you recommend and promote.

I agree, if some people try too much stuff at the same time it can be harmful for them... I also had a bad burn out and went into depression, I have to say it wasn't the most fun time in my life since I had to drop out and chill a bit (although I did keep on working). Maybe if students didn't feel so pressured or took a slower pace they wouldn't get burnt out.

There's nothing wrong in depending on your parents (they are your caretakers after all) but there are some people who abuse of their parents love, I think Danny was talking about those people, the ones who get too lazy and comfy.

my experience with part time jobs was bad. people made to make me work and not pay the full amount after months. lost about USD 2000 working part time for many people. i hope they get their just desserts in this life. Even though i dont have a job now, i wont ever work part time anymore. Some people are just too deceitful, and i stopped trusting most people now. i just trust my close friends and relatives.

I've been in the workforce since I was 15 years old. Did odd jobs before that. At 50, my body says I'm ready for retirement, but Uncle Sam says not until 67 years old. The scare is that there will be no money left in Social Security by then. Pfft. It'll be there. If wwe have trillions of dollars in deficit because they keep printing more money, they can darn well print more for me when I retire! LOL!

So, what job did Mirai-chan finally get?

i was spoiled during my early teen's, stayed very deep into the comfort zone =/

And during my hotel attachment at SHATEC, i experienced first hand what stress was all about.

Long working hours, constant standing, constant workloads, constant quality controls being issued out by our head chefs. And me, having this as my FIRST job, really pushed me to the limits. I wished i prepared myself before stepping into that. And now after seeing how stressful my line of work can be, i braced myself(?) and am now accepting challenges instead. The food and beverage line can be the most overworked yet the least paid job, considering how people regard chefs as very rich people (not 100% true =P) But what ever, if u like it, u like the stress that comes with it too =P its a package xD

    and....

    I realize I'm reading this late, but it's actually oddly appropriate. I just picked up a part time job and had my first day today. ^^;

About folks relying on parents: I'm one of those who refused to let my parents pay. Of course, I get free tuition since my Dad works at the university, but there's still a lot of textbook and film equipment costs which I've been covering on my own. Having always been aware of the effort required to make money, I get pretty annoyed when I see classmates just squandering their time.

Of course, when it comes to balance and time commitment, something has to give. Unfortunately, between school work, part-time, and lessons, it's been my DC time that's been cut.
