The Gundam AFAIK was privately funded. This one is partly funded by the government and through a fundraising project by the citizens. Whatever it is, the Japanese gov't is doing a relatively good job in running the country so I think they deserve things like this monument (it is a permanent exhibit) from time to time.

@NaKAhi70: I'm sure these a large percentage of the costs was from sponsors. Japanese government should earn quite a lot on this through tourism. I'm sure a lot of people who visit Japan would wanna pop by the area to have a look (and spend money in that area).

@yamada: That would be awesome if they constructed an Eva next. Maybe they will for advertising the possible release of the live action movie

How about an ARM Slave from FMP!? An ARX-7 Arbalest would rock. (Find some cute gal to cosplay Chidori Kaname and the Otaku would come in droves. :)

It's as tall as those buildings next to it!

On a related note, why did they have to take down the 1:1 Gundam? =/

I love this idea of public art. Here in the states, there have been themes like hearts in SF, sharks in San Jose and cows in another city. These installations are decorated by numerous artists and put up temporaryily. They are sometimes sold for charity. I have just returned from Philadelphia, where they have alot of whimsical public art like a giant clothes pin and game pieces like dominos and chess pieces. I would like to be able to see more 1:1 mech statues all over Japan. It would definitely make my next trip more interesting
