Announced today - the Lumix GF1 from Panasonic.

Update - just uploaded the review to the Lumix GF1 photo article.

The GF1 employs the Micro Four Thirds standard which means the lenses are removable - a DLSR at half the size of standard DLSR's. I can see this easily replacing my Canon Kiss 2.

The body alone is expected to be about 70000 yen. There will be two lens kits.
One with the H-H020 G 20mm/F1.7 ASPH Pancake lens and the other kit with the LUMIX G VARIO 14-45mm/F3.5-5.6 ASPH/MEGA O.I.S. The lens kits will be about 90000 yen.

Goes on sale in Japan week after next on the 18th - expect a review ^o^
Love the Lumix LX3 but want to get a bit more oomph from my photos and will upgrade to the GF1

I think it sounds a bit pricy for what you're getting personally. It looks awesome an all, I'm just not sure it's worth the price tag.

Yea I know what you mean, but it's compact compaired to most DSLRs which is something that I want so that it'll fit into my camera backpack along with the rest of my gear. If it wasn't so pricey I'd definitely get one. I'm just going to have to wait till the price comes down.

Four Thirds lenses are lighter than lenses made for APS-C crop and much lighter than lenses made for full frame bodies since a Four Thirds has a much smaller image circle. But then again it depends, if you are getting an all in one zoom lens,it will probably be bigger and bulkier.

I'm not that big a camera guy but isn't it technically not a DSLR?
It doesn't have the mechanical mirror mirror system akin to DSLR's, or at least it doesn't look that way in the picture where its taken apart.

Well yeah, technically it doesn't have the features of a normal DSLR like the mirror etc.
But it's not a P&S either since the lens is interchangeable and the sensor used is much bigger than those used in P&S cameras.

Awesome build but too expensive IMO. Also, the fact that there aren't much choice between lenses means there are still limitations to its photo shooting capacity.

But heck, if this rolls out awesome pictures, I might get the f1.7 kit when it comes out. Nothing turns me on like bokeh. :)

Wonderfull, simply wonderfull however the problem is: if you carry the lenses with you, it takes only few space less of a normal DSLR camera in your backpack... If you bring only the pancake lens, you will carry with you only a really really expensive compact camera since you can't exchange the lenses on the spot.
Dunno, maybe I'll go for the Canon G11...

Danny, you are an evil, evil man.
Seriously, not enough lenses at the moment in the 4/3 camp (Pana, Oly) to convince me to change side. I'd still go for a Nikon D90 next. However, GF1 with an adapter, real Leica lenses could be a goer (manual focus though).
Depending on your shooting style and subject, LCD screen is not as fast as optical viewfinder (speaking from my LX3 experience).

If doesn't wrong this camera is using micro four thirds lenses just like the Olympus E-P1 Pen. Can use Four Thirds lenses with a converter, therefore lenses selection wouldn't be a problem i guess.

i don't think you can really call this a successor to the LX3, more like a competitor with the olympus ep-1.
besides, the price point is way too high to be considered mid-range...

Not exactly a point and shoot... this is a Micro Four Thirds system.
Interchangeable lenses and full manual controls make it closer to a standard dSLR than otherwise...

Very similar to the Olympus EP-1, also uses the same micro 4/3 format. The EP-1 is nicer looking. Trouble with these is you have no optical VF, so you have to do chimp impersonations with the camera, and the screen usually becomes invisible in direct sunlight! The true successor to the LX3 is likely to be the LX4 in 2010.

I don't think this fits the bill anyway because it's really a different camera category - where the LX3 is top-end compact, the GF1 is going for very small bridge camera(micro-DSLR as they call it) with changeable four-thirds system lenses. If it's genuinely good (so far as I know the reviews on the other pansonic four thirds system cameras so far have been average at best) it could be a bit of a revolution in bridge cameras but it's definetely not fitting the compact category.

Comparing the stats from the UK panasonic site shows us that the LX3 is 290 grams loaded where the GF1 is 285 body only and the basic kit lens is another 100 - so it's immediately ~33%+ heavier. Dimension-wise the GF1 is around 10% taller, 20% wider and 20% deeper but again that's with no lens attached - with the basic kit lens on it's going to be around twice the depth of the LX3. So if the LX3 is slightly too big for a small camera case and needs a medium, the GF1 will likely need a large case or to be dismantled into a medium and a lens case for carrying.

The GF1 looks to be nearly twice the price and the kit lens looks to lack both the wide angle and zoom capabilities the basic LX3 has so it's probably three times the price to setup once you've bought a wide lens and a telephoto one.

What you do get for that is around 20% more pixels in the sensor and the ability to fit lenses, so if you want a lens for close up work one minute and one with a good zoom the next you can swap them out as with any dslr, but significantly smaller than previous attempts.

If I seem to come across a little harsh I can only apologize as I may be a bit defensive having only bought my LX3 some three weeks ago. (and loving it!)

Strong resemblance to the LX3 but this is not its successor. The earliest we will see a LX4 is early 2010.

Personally I'm really confused at the whole Micro 4/3 cameras like this one and the Olympus. Sure its nice and compact but stick any decent size lens on it and well its not so compact anymore. These things look pretty funny when attached to anything aside from a fixed pancake lens IMO.

Personally I'd rather just get a LX3 or the new Canon SD90 before ever really considering one of these Micro Four Third cameras. I personally like how the traditional mirror DSLR handles.EVF don't do it for me.

Danny, i'm considering to buy the gf1 during the trip to Japan this month when it releases. i heard that Panasonic cameras moved to Japanese ONLY menus/displays (OSD) from having multilingual ones for their local products. I want to know if that is true. or has your lx3 been read with Japanese? i would like there to be English so I can read it. hope you can help out. thank you.

I think that would make a fine urban safari camera. Small enough to fit into a small messenger bag but with enough features to not cause you to kick yourself for not using your 'proper' camera. Not sure of the pop up flash. Reminds of of early Sony pocket sized cassette tape players. Beautiful to see open and close but one wrong move and it's jammed in one place forever. Unless it's made of titanium or some ultra springy stuff that can withstand being snagged on a coat while you rush through a crowded train station.

    Considering buying a new camera.
As sexy as this one looks, I think I'll just go for the lx3, as I heard much praise about it.

I went to check the retail price for LX3 and GF1 from the major electrical store.

    LX3 = S$799
    GF1 = S1299 (with G Vario 14-45mm lens kit)

Can't find a store with the Red colour model. T.T
