Old DC Theme Revival

In progress... You sure you prefer the old design?

Mentioned it before but the current design is temporary - just been having a challenging time fitting everything into the schedule. Before Member News comes back in some shape or form, I'm now working on the DC theme revival. Each section with have ajax loading of different categories so that you can get to stuff quicker without reloading the page.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

This item was posted in the Otaku category. You can see more of everything else or subscribe via RSS instead.

Sounds sensible to me too. I get a little miffed when I see postings which say 'more pictures at figure.fm' or 'full story at otaku.fm'
It's nice to have specialist sites, but I thought dannychoo.com was that? Otherwise Danny should create a dolfie site, a Japanese lifestyle site, a 'what I did yesterday' site, a Japan cuisine site, etc. to prove no favouritism.
Even Danny has pointed to the 'don't do the extra work if it's only repeating what you have already done' wisdom.

Well, I'm still in favor for the new layout (but with a Member Stuff section).
@Danny: Is there any way you can please implement/keep the streamlined List layout for all content, including your "Danny's News" section? Basically, I suggest just renaming the "Latest" section in the current temporary DC.com layout to "Danny's News". Lists just make it much more easier to skim through things quickly and read, especially on the iPhone/iPod Touch.

    Old is the way to go! The site just doesn't feel like DC with the figure.fm theme. Hard, the edges are ^^;
Just remember to add the dark gradient to the article photos on the front page. It's hard to read the text as it is now, and it looks like the gradient in that mockup is a bit light compared to how I remember it.

how 'bout each member can choose their own "skin"
basically just style the whole site with CSS, make several CSS sheets, each member can choose which CSS sheet to use for their view. You can even add up more designs later and keep the old design for those who prefer it, probably just changing the default layout for non-members and new members.
Well of course when new feature is added all skins need to be updated to view that particular area. Takes some amount of work to get it done, I know
and it's only for view, can't say anything for 'content'

If this is only a temporary design, then I wouldn't be able to say whether new or old is better. That said, the old theme was nice and easy, not cluttered, pleasing to the eyes, and a good mix overall.

I like the old design. Not because I fear change, but because it allows me to keep the two sections separate in my head. (DC and figure.fm.) As for what should go where, I do like having member news here, but if it's easier to put it all on figure.fm, then that's the way to go.

I don't mind how the site looks, change is necessary in order to adapt to the new environment as they say. If some members are lost just because the site changed a bit then what was the point in them coming here in the first place. I myself like this site for what it is, not for what I can do here.

He's not just doing some body work to make things look pretty, he's also doing some work under the hood to make things run smoother. Well that's what I get from reading his posts anyways. I understand that sometimes we cannot avoid changes as it is part of evolution. The temporary new layout is quite simple and I have no issue with it, but at the same time, I think I agree with the majority of DC visitors who give comments here... nothing wrong with the old format and I don't mind if DC revert back to the old format. At then end it's up to DC to decide in the best interest of DC and all the readers/visitors....

Both themes are good. My favorite part of DC theme that is missing on figure.fm is the logo which would take you back to the top page. I cant find a button or link that will easily take me to the main page on figure.fm

Also, always wondered why it said "My Menu", but then listed "Your Comments" and "Your Profile". Is it mine or is it yours? ;) I guess as long as we are sharing it then there should be no problems. :)

The old theme seemed a little more polished. Maybe something to do with the figure.fm theme having a lot of solid boxes around the content and the DC theme being more free flowing.

Good to see you changing it up often, to keep up with new innovations.

dannychoo.com has always felt like a second home on the internet to me. I may have found out about everything somewhat late (late 2008) but since then, I've loved the site, and it's been great to learn about Danny, Japan, and more. I've been inspired in so many ways by Mr.Choo, especially when it comes to my life. I had absolutely no idea what to do with my future, until I noticed his "do what you love and love what you do" attitude. I've really loved feeling like I'm connected to all of the other members in some way, since we're all pretty much otaku from around the world. Since the theme change, I've found myself coming on the site a lot less, since I would come to read Danny's news and afterward read some member's news for a bit, as well as keeping the community updated with some of my own news. Now I visit a couple times a week to check out Danny's news. Figure.fm is cool, but the old DC felt like home. In my opinion things seem a little plain around here though...That feel of members sharing news underneath Danny's news while having convos below was amazing, and with all the photo articles on the sides...classic. I know sometimes member's news was either amazing or just messed up, but I think it was a great thing for the networking, information, and otaku fellowship purposes. I think it's a great idea to see what the members of DC think, and I'm for the old theme. Sometimes you can fix the inside, but you can't always improve the outside...some things are already as great as they need to be, you just add on to them. That's how I've always felt about sites and communities, and themes at times.

I look forward to the outcome, and wish Danny the best of luck. I'm sure it'll be turn out awesome.

I just miss the days when DC.com was about the PG Strike Gundam. There have been so few releases lately about Gundadm, and I'm not as interested in cute half naked girl figures, that I find myself not coming back as often as I used to. I bought my PG Strike to be cool like Danny, so maybe that time in the site was when the sites content and my personal interests overlapped the most.

I'll read about Danny's rise to fame, articles about the BBC, etc, but I don't think I'll stay on a page as long as I used to stare at those beautifully taken shots of PG Strike. Danny is still the #1 SEO'd hit when you google PG Strike Gundam even!

As long as I can find what I want fast and easy it´s ok. This temporary theme that you have now is not easy to navigate. In that aspect the former design was easier to navigate, but it still was a bit messy with your news here, photo articles there, member news there, puchi blurps here and everything just seemed like a big mess.

So if you go back to the old design there is just one thing I want you to change. The green color that you used was not for me. I like it better when the color scheme is like it is now. The grey and orange combined with the white is really pleasant on my eyes.

But I also want to see if you can manage to make it all work with a new theme design. So if this current theme is a tryout then the navigation have failed, colors on the other hand is a great success.

And I miss the cute banners with your mascots in them. That is something I really want back.

Definitely looking forward to a revival of the old theme, I personally thought that it was an example of excellent front end design. In fact it was this site that got me interested in web design/coding in the first place. The new temporary theme comes off as a little too utilitarian for me, very quick and efficient but a little to cold. I think DC.com deserves to live on something thats both artistic and functional, and thats why I'm so excited to hear that Danny is bringing it back in an even better way.

I vote for a revival of the old DC theme.

The only change i could think of is that you should just keep a Featured Article and Recent News to replace the Dannys News and Photo Articles on the front page. Also, instead of showing 6 recent news, just have one post in both featured article and the Recent News.

    Just my 2 cents.

Danny what advantages does fireworks give you on working themes for mirai gaia? The Old Theme is realy a cool theme it will be cool if you could combine the header format (You know mixing fotos with animation (the mascosts Mirai anda company).

I think the old DC theme would be better. This one reminds me of figure.fm too much. Need to differentiate!

I kind of like this design, although my design class prof will scream like a little girl (or something like that) if he sees the almost 50/50 split in the middle.

I don't really mind what design you use as long as you keep the use of AJAX. I think it's really nicely implemented here, and more sites should do the same.
