Snow Leopard Japan

When I got my MacBook Pro 17", it came with an A4 paper which gets me a Snow Leopard upgrade for 900 yen (about 9 USD). But they want me to *fax* it in...

Been using Apache for years and now we are using Nginx on the production servers so its a good time to do a fresh install. Expecting installations of MYSQL and PHP to be a bumpy ride.

Anybody going to upgrade to Snow Leopard anytime soon?

Photo taken yesterday at the Sapporo Bic Camera.
The next Mac OSX OS Snow Leopard is out and looks like it will be the first time I make a complete fresh installation instead of just transferring my home folder again. My home folder has been the same one that I've been using since 2005 ^^;

I will wait and see how it turns out. With a bit of luck I can get new hardware and then the newest version of OSX will naturally be included ^^

On top of that I haven't checked if it adds features that I will actually use. Sounds expensive to pay full price for it unless I will actually use the new features.

I would totally go for the upgrade if I could get it for ¥900. However my newest mac came with Tiger and that one was even too old for cheap upgrade when Leopard was released >_<

Mmm, I heard about that PowerPCs can't upgrade to Snow Leopard. A tad shame, but I guess it's for the better.

Once in a while you have the choice between backward compatibility and doing something brand new. Most PowerPCs are dated as the newest models are from like 2005. It would take quite a while to ensure that all the code works on PowerPC too and Apple decided that it wouldn't be worth it for such dated hardware. If people will pay for a new OS then they will likely pay for newer hardware and if they will not pay for newer hardware then they will likely keep the OS which came with the computer.

While I wouldn't mind bringing Snow Leopard to a specific 2 GHz G5 I can understand why Apple gave it the axe. It's also questionable if I would pay full price for that upgrade. The computer is quite slow compared to a modern computer. A new mac also has virtulization, which can be a lot more useful than you think.

Its funny because if MS decided to stop supporting its legacy software or do something like make Windows 7 64-bit only, the Internets would howl bloody murder, but when Apple decides to give the big middle finger to its own products that are barely just 3-4 years old, its perfectly fine. The PowerMac G5s are still perfectly viable machines that are natively 64-bit, which is more than we can say for some of the earlier Intel Core Duo Macs that Snow Leopard will support. They also support PCI-express, so they are perfectly capable of being upgradeable as well. It is too bad, because IBM's PowerPC chips were what made Apple hardware unique back then. Now, they are just dressed up x86 machines, computers with the same hardware as any other personal computer manufacturer's.

Yet I will avoid Windows Vista and Windows 7 because they need too modern hardware. Microsoft decides to give old hardware the axe once in a while as well. Remember when Windows 98 was released? People complained that it was too memory hungry and demanded too much CPU time so while it technically could make it run on old hardware you wouldn't want to try to do it since it didn't work in reality.

            Well, too modern hardware?

            Minimum hardware requirements:
            Processor speed: 1 GHz processor
            Memory: 1 GB x86, 2 GB x64
Graphics card: Support for DirectX 9 graphics device with 128MB of graphics memory
            HDD free space: 16 GB x86, 20 GB x64

The only ones having problems might be netbooks IMO.
My PC is 2 years old and W7 runs really fast and now most ready built system have more power!
What would happen to progress if everyone would support outdated hardware?

Like hikky said, the system requirements for Windows 7 are fairly low, and many people have actually reported running it fine on netbooks (MS designed W7 to scale to older and less capable hardware much better than Vista did, and Vista got lambasted for running sluggishly on older hardware that could run XP fine, proving my earlier point). I was saying that MS still needs to support its own legacy products (such as IE6 and MS Office 97 and below), or else it would be torn a new one, which is why Windows 7 includes a Windows XP virtualization mode. Also, there's a difference between old hardware that is plain slow, and the PowerPC Macs, which are still very modern and capable machines, like I explained before (dual or quad core, 64-bit, support for PCI-express, large RAM addressable).

And the people complaining about Windows 98 not being able to run on old hardware at the time just proves my earlier point once again, that MS gets criticized for dropping support older hardware, while its all fine and dandy when Apple decides to do it.

How did I know Windows 7 was going to rear it's ugly head?
I think you should consider that, mostly due to the price, powermac G5s are few and far between. Granted, there's probably more than a few companies who've thrown a couple hundred grand into outfitting their studio's with them, but those sorts of companies are usually reluctant to upgrade their operating systems anyway. Snow-leopard is, of course, aimed at the masses of individuals with macbooks and iMacs who, albeit reluctantly, end up buying a new system every 3-4 years anyhow.

For the majority of DC readers, I'd say that an upgrade to Snow Leopard or Windows 7 would be a pretty good purchase either way.

When I got my computer before Leopard came out, I received a form to fax in to get my Leopard upgrade. But I located an online form on Apple's website.

    I think this is the Japanese counterpart to the US Up-to-date program. They may allow you to get it online or at least pick up at the store you bought the computer from. But not to sure ^^;

Also, probably won't be upgrading my Leopard. Adobe has only done minimum testing of CS3 on Snow Leopard, and that testing was only to Photoshop. And they are not too gun-ho about testing it since CS3 is 2.5 years old.

Really not looking to upgrade to CS4 anytime soon, if at all, so gonna wait and see what other CS3 users are saying about the compatibility of the OS first.

Yeah, Photoshop Elements is the big deal-breaker for me. No upgrade path for that yet: they are still at v.6 for Mac. That and Office 2004. Too bad: Snow Leopard has some definite upside. However, another thing that is not so great about Snow Leopard is that a lot of the enhancements are BLOCKED with software locks for people on Mac minis and MacBooks. They want you to trash your MacBook and get a MacBook Pro. They pulled that crap with Final Cut Studio (Final Cut Express works but not FC Studio) as well. I love my Mac but sometimes Apple makes me sick.

I placed my order back on August 12th. According to Amazon, it will be shipped out on September 1st. I haven't decided to do a clean install or an upgrade. With the former I want to install it onto a new hard drive, which I have yet to buy.

I heard 10.7 will break my syncing to my old Palm Treo 600. I kept it around for Pocket Quicken and Turbo Passwords. Now I need to search for an Quicken type app for a iPhone or Blackberry.

I just upgrade my Lenovo T61 from Windows XP to Mac OS X Leopard last month, it's totally different from Windows and I have to concede it's better than Windows XP. I can't wait to upgrade my ASUS K40IJ from Windows Vista Home Premium to Mac OS X Snow Leopard at the end of this year. There is still one PC I own that I can't upgrade it and I am going to keep it at Windows XP with Flyakite OSX (My really old desktop with Celeron 2.0GHz)

You can virtualize Windows on a Mac so why bother getting windows.

That makes no sense. If you aren't going to bother getting Windows in the first place, why do you need to virtualize it? Windows != computer

Sometimes you might still need Windows for apps that are not supported on Mac.
          You can install WINE otherwise.
I use Visual Studios C++ and SciLab on my virtual Win XP.

Virtualization always has a massive performance penalty, and if you are serious about your development work, then its a poor option. Much better to run the applications natively in that case. And I always hear about Mac users booting into Windows or virtualizing Windows in order to run programs they need, and never the other way around. If one platform can already provide all you need, while going with another platform forces you to occasionally use the first platform to achieve full functionality, why bother going with the latter platform?

If you actually read up about that event, you'll realise that he didn't hack OS X in 2 minutes. He came to the competition with a ready-prepared hack that he probably spent many days or even weeks preparing at home. All of the news sites reported it completely skewed.

I find it slightly ironic that I can illegally downlaod Snow Leopard faster than Apple can ship it to my door, or before my local Apple store opens in the morning. Because OS X comes with no copy protection, activation or serial numbers, we don't even need to wait for a warez group to crack it, just for somebody in a timezone ahead of our own (Japan or Australia) to buy it & upload a carbon copy. Not that I endorse such actions of course, but I find it surprising that Apple still hasn't introduced anything to try to counter piracy?

It’s interesting to wonder what the next few years will bring. As OS's start to converge and look and perform so much like the other.
I’m using Windows 7 RTM for a little while now, and it’s definitely a polished Vista.
It’s not bad and has some nice features, and also some querks. But seems like a good step up from Vista and a little leap from XP.
Funny how Max OS and Windows are now looking and performing very similar
The next 5 years will be interesting as OS compete, hardware is becoming fast a no brainer, and soon OS’s will be such alike, I wonder who will be left standing?
Maybe the company that can run its OS on more hardware than the other?
    Interesting!

    Otaku ^^

I bought my Snow Leopard on the launch day in Singapore, 28th August 2009. Full installation over my Leopard completed in one hour on my Mac mini.
