Cozy Corner

Cozy Corner originally opened as a delicatessen back in 1948 in Ginza.
They now have over 300 stores across Japan which include restaurants and cafes.
Here we see Aoi-chan about to eat her fave Shu Cream - its like a light pastry filled with custard.
Have always loved Cozy Corner and dreamt of one opening in our local shopping arcade. And then one day I saw that they was just about to open one right in our neck of the woods!

By day people line up for the cakes.

And this is the sort of yummy cakes that they sell.

Cozy Corner by night - its popular around the clock and you can very rarely just walk in and get something without a wait.

Cozy Corner and other places that sell cold sweets or cakes usually ask how long it will take you to get home. When I was first asked, I thought to myself why on earth does she need to know?!
Then I learned that depending on how long it takes you to get home, they will give you the appropriate amount of dry ice to keep your cakes cold on your trip home. I was flabbergasted at the high quality of service as I never saw anything like it back in the UK.
Do you give you ice packs or dry ice sachets to keep your cakes cool on your journey home in your neck of the woods?

I've seen a few places that sell these cakes. Bit embarrassed to order decorative deserts, especially by myself. Things like crepes and those large icecream sundays. Not sure why. Maybe because I mostly see women and couples in those kinds of places...

Choux cream... Since 1948 huh? I love bakeries like that, the ones that have stood the test of time as well as people's ever changing tastes, serving a specialty pastry that everyone remembers. Ah... I'm sure Beard Papa is a pale imitator to this.

In my neck of the woods, if they ask you for the money instead of giving you a cold look is already a blessing. I don't even think they have the proper refrigerators to keep the cakes cool while in the store.

Man, that's some high quality service. With the cakes from our bakery, we just tell them to get it in the fridge as fast as possible... it's sad how our bakery is known for it's service, but leaves the customer high and dry in that area.

Japan's culture never ceases to amaze me. This level of service is unheard of in most places in the world i think. They're more worried about taking your money rather than providing good, or in this case here, outstanding service.

What the heck? They give dry ice? I'm sure they wouldn't do that in the U.S. because people would probably do stuff with it that's dangerous. Dry ice bombs come to mind.

I usually little packs of dry ice when buying Ice cream or cakes from Häagen-Dazs or Chocolates from Royce. after which I would dip them in water when I get home and watch the little one watch the smoke and shriek with glee. ^^;
although I believe Royce in Singapore takes it a step further and give one of those reusable ice gel pack with their chocolates.

This will probably eventually make it out to either the Torrance/Gardena area or to Little Tokyo. But you can bet they won't do the dry ice number here. Heck, BASKIN FRAKKIN ROBBINS and CARVEL won't even send you home with dry ice with an ice cream cake. Hey this is America, B. Y. O. Dry Ice!
