Mirai Gaia Migration

dannychoo.com was thrown together while learning php, mysql, apache, css, jquery, seo and anything else that I was required to learn to build a publishing community site. Learned most of this from google sensei and http://www.w3schools.com/

While the current platform has served me well, its been buckling under its own weight due to the increasing traffic.
The migration to the new Mirai Gaia platform is near completion and out the window will go nearly 10 years of code.
figure.fm runs on Mirai Gaia and while its had a few hiccups, its much more stable and scalable than dannychoo.com which has much better publishing, community and e-commerce features too.

Most of the migration work up until now has been database import scripts and flickr API work. We aim to get the staging server up and running today. Is being in a rush to launch so we are going to release it on the figure.fm theme and then change the CSS after.

If you have any design ideas for the top page then feel free to leave link to a mockup or post it.
The top page needs:-
-500px wide photo article column
-puchi blurb chat
-figure.fm/member posts column
-ad inventory
-space for Mirai, Haruka and Kanata

Folks who submit ideas which are used in the final design will go in the contributors page.

The screenshot you see is of dannychoo.com many moons ago and taken from the History of dannychoo.com article.

So, over the next few days you may see dannychoo.com going fishing from time to time which means that we are close to complete migration. Keep an eye on my twitter for updates.

Forgot to mention that you should not change your password until the site is up and running on Mirai Gaia next week.

Ah, I miss those hexagons designs on the top of the page, but I do like the simplicity of the current interface. Personally I've got no ideas for a new design, but I'm sure someone will come up with something.

I personally find concise designs appealing. If there is too much information at once, it can be hard to take it all in. As long as there is access to the different parts of the site which are quick to find (especially for new visitors) then I don't think there will be many problems.

Danny, you have one bug on Figure.fm that I can't fix.

After I cleared out the cookies, I got Figure.fm to work. The one problem I can't iron out is when I go to sign in, the ite dissappears, and I have to clear the cookies all over again. I cannot access my account. Even after I used Firefox.

Not sure about the front page. ^^; I'll think about it a bit. Glad we get to keep puchis though!

I do have some other questions. ><

    a) Will we be able to change our other profile information after the move? I find myself unable to change my "occupation" line over at figure.fm

    b) Did we ever get an iPhone/mobile version of DC.com? How's work on that going?

I finally switched to a phone with data (a Blackberry) and would love to keep up on the go - it's probably the only way I can stay as active as I am now after school starts, actually. ><

I, personally, think the puchi blurbs would look very nice if they scroll horizontally below the main headlines and whatnot, with a scroll bar to see the past comments (up to a limit, of course)

However, I can see how this could translate badly for other languages as some read R->L, while this method would be more suited for L->R readers.

This is really just a very rough sketch of an idea for the blurbs, but a link to twitter would be nice, but I recall something about the two becoming affiliated anyway in the future, but a live stream for the blurbs would be excellent!

I like the current design, it is nice and simple yet appealing. The site has been improved with each redesign, so I have faith that whatever you choose to do will only improve things. I know I don't post much anymore, but I do keep up with the site on a day to day basis - which leads me to admit I rarely use the menus up top. I just float by and click whatever's new. For some reason when I scroll down, the members' news items catch my eye before your photo articles to the right, it's almost as if I get distracted from them - while your news articles are the first thing I see. It's not a big issue, mainly my fault really but if you could address that in some manner, it would be great. Perhaps a wider main photo with a longer summarization on top would do the trick.

I'm currently enjoying the existing design of the website. It's a breath of fresh air compared to the older style posted, less cluttered with a more professional look to it.
I like the hexagon design and could possibly be used as substitutes for the current, Danny's news but without the background Hexagons.
Anyway, I think i'll mash something up if I got the time. If not, good luck to the movement of the website.

I do enjoy the current design of dc.com, especially the bar at the top that is not intrusive but is also helpful.

Figure.fm design is ok but the banner at the top is too big in my opinion. The ad banners also take up a good portion of the screen at 1680x1050 resolution.
