A few years ago, I got some Vader armor from a company called "Timeless Movie Props."
I wasn't happy with the quality of the armor and proceeded to abuse the responsibility I had of running a blog read by a large audience.
I used my search engine optimization knowledge and arranged for my post to come up as the first result when one searched for "Timeless Movie Props" where upon a user would discover my post and read my rant.

That was about two years ago and when I think about what I did, it makes me cringe and I feel ashamed of what I did. It didn't do John any good (the boss of TMP) and it didn't do me any good as I probably lost readers who thought "what a dick head" when they read my trolling post.

It took me a while to come to my senses and realize that I was wrong. I contacted John to apologize and he found it in his heart to forgive me.

The take away from this - ranting and trolling in public is good for nobody and is especially bad for the ranter.
As a hiring manager at Amazon, I always checked out the person who I was about to interview online. The toughest part about making a hiring decision is that I cant spend all week with the candidate before deciding to hire them or not - I'm only given an hour or so by HR.

So I check out what the candidate has been doing online to help with the decision. While none of my candidates had been doing anything online to raise any red flags, I don't think I or any of the other hiring managers would have thought highly of candidates who had been bashing others or ranting on their blogs or other community sites.

This is just an example of how bashing others can indirectly affect ones career in life but thats not the point. The point is that ranting/bashing others is not nice. Life is short and we should spend it helping others and being nice.

The repercussions of what may seem trivial like bashing others on ones blog are unseen at first but the ranter starts to come to his or her senses when they take a look at where they are in life.

Having said all that, being on the end of public bashing can in some cases be free publicity as I have mentioned before - at the total expense of the ranter...

Anyway, I wanted to bring all that up because now that John and I are buddies, I would like to take a look at something that he sent over to me the other day - some gorgeous Iron Man armor photos.

Helmet is made of fiberglass and is one piece.

The chest and back armor is solid reinforced fiberglass which locks together with bolts and Velcro.

The hands are ABS vacuum formed plastic.

And hes got a MK II too.

Just has to be the best Iron Man replica out there.

These last few photos are of the 3rd generation armor that John is building which will be the one that you wear should you decide to buy.

And if you do decide to buy or want more info then contact John at [j-cath-k at online.no]

Great article Danny!! I think that you touched on some great points about one's responsibility of what they post online and its consequences. I can vouch for this myself. ^^ Annyyway. Im happy that you were able to mend your relationship with TMP. Plus, the armor suit looks sick! Especially with the damage effect they created on one of the masks of Iron Man. It would be awesome to see a dancing Iron Man, dancing through Japan w/ some great music. XD Thanks again!

The helm looks big, but I guess that can't be helped cause someones head is supposed to go in there xD I would like to see some mods on the suit to make it light up in the chest.

Very cool costume! I prefer to have a real working Iron Man suit that I can fly with, though... Well I suppose I can jump off a plane with it and pretend I'm flying, but it's just not the same.

Anyhow... regarding ranting... I usually don't rant too much. Perhaps the only rant that I did was my Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya novel. I didn't mind the translations, but the poor choice in the paperback cover was not only unsightly, but would reduce the potential in attracting new customers.

Sometimes, ranting is a nice way to let off some steam. Then again... too much and you'll just burn everything in your path. Nailing shut the kettle and preventing it from venting is a bad idea. Its just going to explode in a nasty manner. If you're displeased with the quality of something, I believe you are entitled to voice your opinion. Heck, it might be be considered a responsibility to inform the general public of your experiences whether it is good or bad. This is how I see it anyway. Its nice to see John and you make up though. Better to have friends than enemies.

Some people actually make a career and a life out of ranting: professional pundits and opinionists. The difference being, of course, that they actually know what they are talking about and have all the facts and research to back up their assertions.

I agree though that simply trolling for teh lulz, or being a blind idiot proponent of the Greater Internet F***wad Theory, is just plain asking for trouble - the sort of trouble that WILL inflict its karma eventually.

Question about the Iron Man helmet: can you get it customized to fit, say, a particular shape of skull/face, or to fit in glasses beneath? (I was thinking that Danny might have problems wearing the helmet if it can't accommodate specs.)

Never saw the post in question but was wondering what your opinion is then on the difference between 'ranting' and 'negative reviews', the latter with which will provide reasonable and constructive criticism? There's usually a fine line across different individuals with how they view what a 'rant' could possibly constitute.

As for the armour - awesome! Will it be for sale soon?

Good to see you have made up with your old friend. Time is too short to be leaving grudges and matters unresolved. You never know when your time may be up.

On trolls and ranting, sometimes, when they make intelligent arguments, their feedback can help me improve myself. Sometimes its good to hear those opposing views. Of course, there's also those times where they are just saying stuff to try to get under your skin. Best to ignore them in that case.

That is a very nice armor indeed!

About rants... I dunno how that post went, but I'm not really against them.
I'm more against trolling... but ranting and trolling are different things.

Let me be clearer: A rant not always has to be "destructive", though it sometimes can be very tough because you are expressing your anger/frustration/feelings about something you didn't like.

But SOMETIMES, that is the only way to make your message reach the manufacturer, and to make them reflect about the weak points of their products.
A good rant is usually not without motive, and it will point out problems, which can be picked to improve it later on.

Trolling is far worse, because it's just mindless bashing and hatred. It's unfortunately something lots of people waste time on, usually to vent anger that was created from some other source, and has nothing "constructive" about it, not constituting of solid criticism on a product, but rather putting it down without consideration.

Finally, one thing I both like and hate about the Internet is just that: How sincere we can be, how people really say what they are thinking of this or that thing.
This can also be pretty bad depending on those who are the object of criticism, but if we can select the good ones from the bad ones, we end up with directions to improve our products or services.

It's nice to consider some examples from game developers and anime directors... Blizzard and Valve both have received tons of trolling, bashing, ranting, criticism and complaints. It's interesting how they deal with them (look for the Diablo 3 rainbow case, and the Team Fortress 2 case).

I'm sure that that the hardest part about this wasn't realizing what you'd done but actually doing something about it. It's usually so very tempting to just leave things be, so props for owning up and contacting John. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have bothered unless...well, unless I was pretty guilt-ridden. Don't know if that's the case for you, but you did contact him in the end, and that's the most important thing.

Wow cool , Iron Armor is shiny and really bulky than your StormTrooper Armor .

It will be super cool if Danny bought a Boba Fett Armor and go dancing around in Tokyo , then it will be The TokyoBountyHunter .

To me I like Boba Fetts armor better than the Darth Vader Armor because the armor is like a fusion between The vader Armor and the Storm Trooper armor

I fail to see what is wrong with posting a review of a product when you weren't happy with the quality. That is half the point of a review, to give people well rounded information about a product/service. If you only mentioned the good, and omitted the bad, I really wouldn't take your opinion very seriously (because then you would be a shill).

Now, obviously you don't want to let it devolve into obscenities and bash the person/company just because you're angry.

I actually remember that article and I seem to remember you had some valid complaints. It's hard to remember though if you went a bit too far, being so long ago.

It is natural to want to seek an avenue to vent out one's dissatisfaction with anything or anyone. The advent of blogging brings about another method for one to display his displeasure for the world to see. The drawback of such an avenue would be the risk of being found out by the subject of the rant and this is harder to avoid for blogs with higher traffic such as yours. While in your case it may help other consumers be more aware of what to expect when purchasing similar products, others may view your rant as being unprofessional. I believe it is admirable to publicly retract your complaint and apologise to the subject of your previous rant. It boosts your image of a professional blogger.

I admit that I have also been a culprit of similar rants (or even personal attacks), and what's worse is that I used to bitch about other people back from the time when blogging tools like LiveJournal and Blogger were novelties. I'm glad that those places didn't garner as much traffic back then as you do now, and the subjects of my bitching probably didn't find out. Despite not being caught, I learnt a lesson and decided that it wasn't wise to do such things no matter how few people read my blog.

On the other hand, you could avoid trouble by writing a more politically correct-sounding entry, though that would kinda defeat the purpose of displaying your dissatisfaction. :P

I don't think ranting and trolling are useful things to do on the internet, but If you feel that the product you bought is not the desired quality or was overpriced, etc, etc, I don't see anything wrong with voicing your opinion and letting potential buyer read it. You just have to do it putting facts that are true.

cool costume! iron man dance will be cool! lol.

Warmonger costume would be absolutely wicked, though i think its not at all feasible, in terms of budget and for the people actually wearing it. cool, but cant.

in regards to bashing, i do believe its always best not to. at some point, you'd realize what a jerk you are and how childish you were. Its always best to face things head on, that way you don't hurt others, you don't make yourself look like a foolish jerk, and its actually more productive as compared to senseless rants. After all the rage, you'll realize that you got over your head. So the best thing is to be zen-ish. lol

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Danny did nothing wrong when he ranted about his stormtrooper armour. In fact, "Rant" is probably the wrong word as it was valid criticism of the product. I remember reading the articles and danny showed clearly that the workmanship was rather shoddy. Perhaps it was a one off thing for the company but when the product does not match expectations then the consumer is permitted to give criticism. I don't remember the article being an attack on the individuals or the staff, just the armour (and then the numerous attempts to fix it). If I bought something in that state and needed to work that much just to make it work, then I wouldn't buy from the company again either.
If the company got stick because of the posts, then it should drive them to do things better. The company today may be totally different from back then, but it won't change if their customers stay silent.

Danny, you may feel embarrased by your post but you did nothing wrong. Strange that "don't try to please everyone" is one of your mantras yet that's what this post felt like.

Ranting is an interesting phenomenon. Sometimes its warrented and sometimes it not. I've ranted in the past when I've been treated poorly by a merchant but recently had a different situation occur.

I have a Yamaha Raider Motorcycle and recently purchase a new exhaust. The exhaust arrived in less than acceptable quality so I called the companies CEO. I was not mean but just up front. For the last 2 months they've been trying to get me a replacement even though their production run has ended. Last Friday I received a call from the CEO with an intreging offer. They had a very big motorcycle show coming up and needed a Raider (which I have) for the show to showcase their new parts. Typically they call a local dealer and ask to barrow a bike in exchange for free parts for the dealer. The dealer installs them but is allowed to keep them for the sale of the bike after the show. Knowing I was relatively close the CEO offered this to me...a regular guy. So On thursday about $1500 in free chrome parts will arrive and then I'll have a week to install them and get the bike 4 hrs away to the show. I get to keep all of the parts to do whatever I want with them after the show. I'm very lucky I.

Kinda goes to show that sometime...sometimes its worth holding your rant.

A good lesson to not troll/rant even online. If you must, do it mentally and keep it to yourself.

That's some amazing craftsmanship. A lot of attention to detail in the costumes.

    He has done a nice job with the proportions of the suit. Would be nice to see completed suits of both versions. You could some great modifications to that suit. Add lights to the chest and other areas, maybe cooling for the helmet and lighting under the chest... ^^;

Well you know we where all bad about giving John a lot of grief at that time. Really we are all equally guilty, not just you. The other night I let my bad judgment get the best of me and let in on a few people. It was stupid and I feel like an arss for doing it too. Always best to just ignore the trolls and bashers. It is something I always need to remind myself.

Saying negative things about something isn't always bad. If it explains why something is bad, it's a valid statement. Constantly saying something is good even when it isn't is probably even more irresponsible of a person with influence. Issues need to be brought up in order for them to get fixed. That said I don't know whether what Danny wrote was bashing or not since I don't know what he actually said.

what? how does that make any sense, if the producer is bad at making a product then he's just bad sure u might get over it in time but facts dont change, and it's good that u warn others what happened to u so other ppl will know which companies r bad , i say they deserve it

Armor look good! But it think the charming point is the light from chest and eyes

Being too emotional to comment something and put it on top of search engine is not good. But having an objective to comment will be a big help for further customer or help the company itself to imporve
