Japan Earthquake

There was an earthquake this evening across Japan and it felt very scary in Tokyo. As you can see from the screenshot, it was recorded at Magnitude 6.9 @.@
There was a rumbling noise and the sound of things shaking around the house. Wifey, I, and the daughters are fine.
Japan has its own scale for measuring earthquakes known as the "Japan Meteorological Agency seismic intensity scale"
Today Tokyo was level 4 which is described as the following:-
Many people are frightened. Some people try to escape from danger. Most sleeping people awake.
Hanging objects swing considerably and dishes in a cupboard rattle. Unstable ornaments fall occasionally.
Electric wires swing considerably. People walking on a street and some people driving automobiles notice the tremor.
A large number of houses in Japan are made of wood which is a good thing I think - wood absorbs the tremors and I'd rather have bits of wood falling on me instead of concrete ^^;
Tokyo is due to have a major earthquake but its been due for about 10 years now. If it did hit us then things will be quite bad indeed. The clip below from 1995 shows what happened during the major earthquake that hit Kobe. 6,433 dies in the quake and over 40,000 were injured.
And the video below shows a simulation of Tokyo being hit.
If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.
If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.

Tokyo Magnitude 6.9? The anime really brought home the consequences of an earthquake.

OK, I survived Reseda/Northridge in 1994 and Sylmar in 1971 as a very chibi-chibi chibi. Northridge felt like "OMG we're all going to die." My memories of Sylmar are sketchy to say the least...I primarily remember being whisked out of my bed and my mom and I under my vanity waiting for the shaking to stop, and the dog barking as if she could chase away whatever she thought was shaking the house.
We haven't had the big one here yet either. And if Japan is overdue LA's 24 months pregnant, if you know what I mean.

No doubt about LA, I fear the next one there is going to be huge. I survived San Francisco myself back in 1989, that was my "omg, I'm gunna die!" moment. haha
College Freshmen
I was kind of hoping it wouldn't happen for at least another 4 years which would give me time to graduate college and hopefully find a job out of CA. After the "big one" which is supposed to happen relatively soon I was hoping I could go back and buy a house for dirt cheap.

In REAL earthquake the round produce a very low hum. I experienced it in early 90's back home. I know what is like. Very scary and out of the ordinary.

Yeah, glad to hear that you are okay. San Jose already had a significant earthquake the year before last year. Not as big as the infamous 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, but still significant. (I was still in elementary school when that big one occurred.) When San Francisco will have its next big earthquake is beyond me. I hope it's not anytime soon. I'm trying to go back there before the month's over.
Anything interesting... that's what I do.

Is the X where the earthquake originated from? wouldn't that cause a huge tsunami? run for high ground!
I paint F/A-18C's
I don't think it's quite so cut & dry. Type of earthquake (sudden jolts, or more of a rolling effect, etc), not far enough or way or any other number of things could help or hinder the creation of a tsunami.

That was me! When Danny posted the tweet, I was working on Wikipedia and so posted the details. WikiNews had it about 5 minutes after it happened. The BBC still haven't got anything online, and even CNN have only got a breaking news banner up on their website so far. It just goes to show, that we can react faster than so-called professional news agencies.

Very scary thought of an earthquake, but nothing happens in Australia, the most boring country geographically speaking. Middle of a tectonic plate, no earthquakes, no volcanoes the only disasters we get are floods and droughts, and even then I don't get that in Sydney.

I know the earthquake feeling too, it was in 2000 or 2002 I don't know exactly but It's not
important, I was in Tokyo/Yurakucho at the Kotsu Kaikan in the round building on the Top of the building I visit there a phonecard convention (I collect anime phonecards too) and it came in the morning, this feeling was so unreal in this moment, the most of the japanese people are silent a few are nervous but after 45 seconds was it gone...well when I remember this, my feeling says we are all so little humans in a sometimes not friendly world..

I heard that the older wooden houses are greatly affected by earthquakes because those roof tiles are pretty heavy.
I've never experienced an earthquake before, Australia sits right in the middle of the tectonic plate. So no volcanoes and no earthquakes here.
Anyway glad that the quake wasn't too major and everyone here is fine.
BTW isn't this the 2nd earthquake that has happened in the past few weeks?
After watching "Tokyo Magnitude 8.0", it makes me think... it's just a matter of time before an event like that will happen.

I was doing my homework at the time when the earthquake it. At first I was a little startled, but then it went on for a while, and I became really bored, and just went back to doing homework while the earthquake was still happening. It probably lasted for 20 seconds or so. Wasn't very big, but was very noticeable.
glad that you're alright danny

Wow that was quite a serious earthquake. The thing is we had one to, though it was a fart in comparison ( arround 2-2.3 on Richter scale). The most noticeable thing was the deep, low rumble. I thought it was a heavy plane at first.

Hmmm, and I still want to go to Japan ^_^ Glad everyone is safe Danny. Now, if a earthquake happened I would be more afraid of the gas lines bursting than anything else. You just need a nice sturdy table to hide underneath from falling debris. As far as the builidngs go, aren't buildings in Japan such as those modern office buildings designed so that they rock back and forth in place to avoid from collapsing? Of course, a wooden house would probably rock back and forth because of the lighter frame.
I woke up maybe 2 minutes before the earthquake hit. I thought it was just some jerks running up the stairs at my hostel, but then it kept going.

I felt a tremor before back in Singapore due to earthquakes in neighborhood country, pretty scary as we live on the 10 floor? ^^;;; It was more gentle swaying but I cannot imagine if it got any worse since many of the apartments in Singapore are made of concrete and are built quite close to each other ^^;;; think dominos effect ^^;;; In Canada - Richmond more high rises are being built, which is a bit disturbing as we're supposedly also due for a big one for a while now too ^^; apparently if there's an earthquake we'll all sink ^^;

how ironic....it almost would have been like the Anime "Tokyo Magnitude 8.0" as a lot of people commented. I guess the creators of that anime are really crapping in their pants now for coming up with an idea like that...
But on a positive note it does paint a preety realistic scenario of such a disaster and simulate what the emergency response plan would be for it. I guess it would also test the goodwill of us human beings if such a thing were to happen. would we react like "every man for himself" or help each other to overcome this disaster??

It's not an idea, It's the earthquake that's suppose to hit japan in the next 30 years, you can call the series somewhat a "simulation" as to what will happen from gathered information.

Glad to see everyone is OK, but with the earthquake occurring in the seas, what about tsunamis? Also, as the Richter scale increases, how does the actual power of the earthquake increase? Is it a linear scale, or something exponential (e.g. a 7.0 is much more powerful than a 6.0 in power ratio compared to a 6.0 to a 5.0)?
browsing the nets
http://otakuposts.blogspot.com/
a 6.0 magnitude earthquake is ten times more powerful than a 5.0 magnitude earthquake.

More like a geometric scale then. But the 10 times is based on what sort of power measurement? Because a 6.0 is equivalent to 1 megaton of TNT, while 7.0 is 32 megatons.

The only earthquake I've ever felt was 2 years ago in Sendai. I think it was only a 2 on the Japan scale, and it only lasted a few seconds; it happened in the middle of the night. Since it was my first time, I was really shocked, but my wife didn't even wake up. She is used to it.

Oh, I learned something interesting today. Japan records earthquake strength differently than the US. Thanks for that info Danny!
Though seeing as this one was recorded as a 6.9 and apparently the scale tops out a 7.. I wonder what scale the anime 'Tokyo Magnitude 8.0' is using.
http://xcomprandomness.co.uk/
Hmmm... Didn't know Japan had their own earthquake scale. They have to have their own version of everything, don't they? ^^;
Glad to hear your family's alright, DC. Only experienced a very tiny one here in Scotland that lasted a few seconds in the middle of the night. Everyone thought they were dreaming but it was confirmed in the news the next day.

I've experienced a couple of earthquakes over here but they were very short and probably not that strong. Glad to know everyone is okay ^^

good to know you & family is safe Danny. i have experienced some quakes too. last time i was sitting on the couch and it felt like some invisible hand was rocking it. i got angry and got down and then realized it was a quake when i saw some water in a glass shaking violently.
could smell cement powder that came out of walls due to cracks, and all this lasted for just less than half a minute.

Most people living on and around the ring of fire are living on borrowed time, anyway, but the Tokyo CMA stands to lose many more people due to its concentration of population. I'm glad you live uptown, so there'll be less falling on you when the biggie does come - and it will - but ultimately, are the risks worth the rewards when there's so much at stake? A person's perseverance(?) might carry him/her through hard times, but maybe it's also the thing that brought you into harm's way in the first place.

How frightening!
I'm not from an area that experiences many quakes, thankfully.

I've got the news by television more than one hour ago. In Italy is still Sunday evening.
I'm happy there were no victims, last April instead, here in Italy, a strong earthquake seriously damaged the city of L'Aquila and made hundreds of victims.
Now Danny forgive my silly question, but is the Odaiba Gundam still on his feet?
I'm a little worried about him! :)
???Confused???
Glad to hear you're okay Danny...California is due for an earthquake as well and the one in 1992 was the last major earthquake that hit...don't remember much about it except a few things breaking and the power going out...

Denmark never really has any earthquakes so I've never actually tried it.
There were once we got hit where I live, but it was in the night and not really a big thing so I didn't wake up. All the others in the house did though.
But I'm going to Taipei in 10 days and will be staying there for 11 months so I guess I'll get to try that out too.

Nah, Tsunamies are not such big problem for Tokyo as far as I know (but I don't live there so I don't know for sure.). It's usually other cities located out on the smaller islands that sometimes have problems with those.
The 2004 Indian-Ocean Tsunami was really that bad because there were no warning and people had cut down a lot of plants near the beach which usually weakened the tsunami.
On another note: Isn't that simlation of an earthquake in Japan a bit unrealistic? Wouldn't it usually be pretty easy to forewarn such a big earthquake a bit earlier than 2 seconds before it strikes?

Hi danny, relatively new reader to your blog (for abt a month). Been going on it since its just composed of pure win.
Thank god I am not in Tokyo atm, was here from the 31st of july all the way to the 5th of August. Although flight back home was quite eventful, hitting a typhoon on the way back. Wanted to drop by at Harajuku for TFS but realised that by the time i knew the location on 4th august, it was 7 pm.....

I mean, think about it. You have more SAFs coming in than St. Peter has people. And that might have made him so jealous that this happened. :O

Wow, I had just started watching Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 last night and thinking how horrible events like this are. I like to think that major disasters at least bring people together in terms of other countries coming to help in the rescue efforts.

I actually think that more often than not, other countries help only to score political points. Regardless, the final beneficiaries are what matters I suppose.

Glad you and wife and daughters are fine. The one earthquake I felt in Vancouver was in 2001. It originated somewhere near Seattle and is felt right across to Vancouver. At the time I was in an office building and for about half a minute, it felt the whole building was swaying back and forth. It was a weird sensation. The building I was in was not exactly new and I am not sure how well it was earthquake-proved. Luckily no one was hurt in Vancouver as far as I know.

This reminds me of the anime "Tokyo Magnitude 8.0".Speaking of which, Philippines too is overdue for a big earthquake. I think we've been overdue for a hundred years already. Buildings here aren't as strong as the ones in Japan so an earthquake would be catastrophic.

singapore's small, we dun get earthquakes, but our neighboring countries do, and if that generates a tsunami or whatever towards us we'd be atlantica, and our merlions will swim freely again.
Either way we're so small any natural disasters would totally sink us down >.< Would be scary to imagine an earthquake here

The biggest earthquake I can remember myself having was last year here in SoCal. I was in summer school and the 5.4 (richter, mind you) about 15-20 miles out got to us and the walls started making rumbling noises. At first it felt pretty standard (not the first earthquake i've felt) but it quickly turned into a concern. So I looked around with a worried look on my face for about 10 seconds, and a few seconds after the shake, I was like "so should we, like, duck and cover or something?"

There have been a few earthquakes in Manchester England. Have the storms past you yet Danny? I heard 10 people died in Japan At least 10 people have been killed in Japan in flash floods generated by the approaching tropical storm Etau.
I hope everybody will be ok. There have been other typhons killing 1 in China and 12 in Taiwan
If you want to read more from the BBC:

Hope everyone takes care too. Typhoon Etau just went past Osaka, Yokahama and Tokyo. Maybe the Typhoon also caused the earthquake too

I experienced 2 small earthquakes in England believe it or not (where I grew up). We had one down here in Ishigaki a few weeks ago and I must admit that it wasn't a pleasant experience. The problem with quakes in Japan is that you have no idea how bad it's going to get.

The only thing that keeps me from being 100% sure if I should live in Japan or not in the future is the earthquakes.
I can still remember the big earthquake here in Athens in 1999(and it was only 5.9) and I'm really scared at the thought that if I live in Japan I might experience an even bigger earthquake.
Every time I visit a country that doesn't have earthquakes I feel so safe XD(and I use elevators as well.Too afraid of using them at countries with earthquakes)
