Gotanda

A bit after 7pm in Tokyo at Gotanda after dindins. Cycling around the metropolis at night in the cool breeze has been one of our fave past times of late. For this time of year, its particularly cool and have been going without the air conditioning for a few days now. Remember how hot it was this time last year.
Gotanda is situated on the JR Yamanote line and is filled with restaurants and offices. Had no idea how close it was to our place by bicycle. A few photos of the area from the 1960's taken from Odekake.

I really like Danny's articles that makes time comparisons.
I would really like to fet around by bike at night, but it is something I would avoid at all cost. Differently from Japan, one thing Brazil do lack is security, especially in big cities. =/

I don't know where you live in Brazil, but not all areas are like that.
When I lived in Rio (Botafogo), I used to go on my bike with my lil sister
from my home to flamengo without problems. I think it depends from where
you live.

I know what you mean. It's been wet here all last month. Wish some of it would go out west and dampen down some those forest fires...
All these places I want to go to.. maybe in two years I'll get the chance.

Thats what I meant. You guys out there could use what we've been getting too much of. Rained yesterday, and last night was miserably muggy as a result

I'm ashamed that 1960's Japan has the same street cars that we are currently using in Toronto. Hopefully when you have teleportation devices we will have electric trains.

Wow check out the trams - I actually went on a tram for the first time ever in Melbourne about 3 weeks ago... It was crazy but I looked like such a tourist because I couldn't work the ticket machine =/
Anyhoo, what I really notice about the photos is how empty and sorta peaceful the streets look... ^_^
It's like a ghost town in comparison to the 'now' pics.

I used to live in Gotanda for the first month when I came to Japan 3 yrs ago. It was a monthly mansion 5 minutes walk from the JR station. I haven't been to Gotanda since I moved to my current residence. I sorta miss it ^^;

seems like most of the sky was visible in the olden days. now all that can be seen are high rises touching each other.
few hundred years down the line Japan would be the first country to have cities built on top of existing cities.

I've never even heard of gotanda and it's not surprising if it's mostly offices and restaurants. It doesn't sound like a place that tourists would go often.

Ah nice old pictures there. It reminds me of Gatekeeper anime, but also when I first moved to Vancouver. They didn't have trams anymore, but they still have the rails on Main Street :)

It's winter here and it's not that cold... average maximum temps are 20degC. Min ranges from 8-10.
Trams are still being used here in Australia, funny thing is I've never been on one.

Nothing like sitting on an old tram, stuck in traffic, on a hot day...
Do they still have trams in Tokyo/anywhere in Japan? Melbourne has them as a second form of public transport and they are everywhere.

I can never get bored with reading about Danny's daily life in Japan because the way he tells what he see's is very matter of fact and simple yet detailed and descriptive. One thing that I really like is he knows how to give enough detail to get your mouth watering but not enough to fill your stomach so your always wanting for more and more. I think that if Danny did nothing else but talk about life in Japan and where he lives I would be completely happy reading his blogs though I would atleast want an occasional anime article.

Only time I've heard of Gotanda is on the way the way to Shibuya from Shinagawa. Never actually been there though.
Saw those street cars outside of Paddy's Market in Sydney. Didn't get on though.

Have never looked around Gotanda although I was there shortly by mistake. I was at Ebisu station and decided to walk to Shibuya. So I started my journey and passed Meguro station but thought nothing of it. When I got to the next station, Gotanda, I relized I had gone in the wrong direction. Somehow I had gotten turned around at Ebisu and confused south with north. So, I hopped on the Yamanote, got off at Ebisu, and resumed my original intention. Over the last few trips, I find myself walking around parts of the Yamanote loop. I will try to finish the walk over the next few years. So far I have walked from Harajuku to Shinjuku, Akihabara to Nippori, Harajuku to Shibuya, Ebisu to Gotanda, and Ebisu to Shibuya.

The time comparisons are awesome, Japan has come so far while the rest of us have kinda lingered and waited to follow their lead.
You're brave cycling around with all the traffic zooming around Danny, especially at night, think i'd wuss out :P
