During my very first days of learning Japanese without the Internets, I looked up words in a paper dictionary - nothing wrong with that - it just took time. It wasn't until I was about to leave uni where I was able to get an electronic dictionary like one of these Canon Wordtank that enabled me to look up and learn words quicker.

Before I joined Amazon, I had a short stint at a recruitment company called Job Dragon where I worked as a web developer. I worked with somebody called Max who then went on to start his own company White Rabbit Press where he sells and manufacturers Japanese learning materials.
Caught up with Max recently and nabbed some stuff from him that I thought you'd be interested in - I want to keep the Wordtank for myself though ^^;

First up is an Audio guided tour of Kabukicho. If you are in to bright lights, boisterous crowds, less-dressed girls, loud touts and discretely guarded doors then this is the book for you.

Next up is this Kanji Wall Poster that contains all of the Joyo Kanji - the most common 1926 kanji that you need to get around comfortably in Japan.

Didnt have anything like this in my days learning Japanese so I made my own.

Whoever wins this should stick it in the toilet like I did when I was a wee lad. You get to absorb and learn kanji while taking a pee or poo - kill two or three birds with one stone - or in this case a clump of poo?

Next up are Kanji Flash Cards. The best way to learn is to take a few random cards with you on the way to work or school and read them out aloud when on the train. Humans learn quick through humiliation.

So up for grabs today is the Kabukicho book, Kanji wall chart and the Flash cards. I've always wanted to thank my Twitter followers and want to do so today by offering this giveaway exclusively to them.
If you are not following my Twitter then you can still just signup/follow and you will be able to participate too. I'ts difficult to offer to only current Twitter followers because I cant see when people started to follow me - so the only thing I can do is open this to anybody who follows me.

All you have to do to win the goodies is to guess what time the below photo was taken.
All the clues you need are in the photo but I'm feeling generous so here is a clue:-

The mango pudding that I ate was very puni puni
Muwahaha.
Rules:-
-You must have a Twitter account and be following me.
-You must tweet your answer and not leave it in the comments of this post as they will be ignored.
-Tag your answer with "#DC0730Giveaway" and bookmark the status url like
http://twitter.com/dannychoo/status/2925527117
You need to tag it which enables me to see all answers so far.
-So for example, if you think that this photo was taken at 5pm in the evening then your tweet would be like:-
#DC0730Giveaway 17:00 @dannychoo
You need to bookmark your twitter status url to claim your prize.
-You do not need to tweet the url of this giveaway unless you want to. This giveaway is to thank my Twitter followers and not about spamming for new followers.
-You got until Monday 3rd JST to answer.
-You can only answer once.
-I will announce the winner only on my Twitter.
-Winners should message me through Twitter with their URL. I will forward your mail onto White Rabbit Press and they will send you your goodies directly.
-Whoever answers correctly gets the lot. If 3 people answer correctly then they split it. If no body gets it right then the nearest person wins.
-Arms installation is complete - good luck!

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

This item was posted in the Japan category. You can see more of everything else or subscribe via RSS instead.

While I have a twitter account and have been following you Danny I am not entirely sure what some of these rules actually mean.
Perhaps some generous people here could inform me if I have this wrong.

To enter I simply post a tweet on my twitter like so:
    #DC0730Giveaway 17:00

Then I bookmark that tweet for later and if I win I send danny the link to that tweet? The whole "You need to bookmark your twitter status url to claim your prize." threw me off as I am not sure what a twitter status URL even is haha.

What is to prevent people from tweeting multiple answers and then just sending the link to the tweet that was correct?

long time back about a year or so i wanted to have one of those dictionaries, but the prices are too high for me to afford. Plus amazon.jp has these at very less price compared to what some sites are charging, but they ship to japan only i think.

currently i took a printout of the hiragana and katakana from a site and put it up next to the monitor. i think i will download the kanji flash cards from the same site "polarcloud" which gives it away for free. just need to get some good stock paper. I also have a printout of the 100 kanji or so required to be known in grade4 kanji test.

for poor people like me who cannot afford to spend in usd always there are lots of free resources available on the net to learn kanji from. just need to search for what you want. ^^

also forgot, me not a twitter user. so best of luck to those participating.

a tip!!!- using association and imagery helps learning

ex- sore (means "that") picture a "sore" (canker sore/cold sore w/e) on a hat so you associate sore with hat ( i used "hat" because i sounds similar to that)
    ...so sore means "that"

i just wanted to share lol

Hmmm... I'm not sure how to bookmark a tweet exactly, but I think links should be like this:
      http://twitter.com/dannychoo/status/2927137466

Usually when you reply to a tweet, your tweet would have "time from web in reply to username"
When you hover the "in reply to username" phrase, it's actually a link... so I guess you can uh, reply to your own answer, get the link and then delete the dummy reply ^^; I tried adding tweets to favorites, but you don't really get the link of the actual tweet.

I've actually found that the best electronic dictionary is the one where you can enter the characters in manually. It's difficult to discern the "on" and "kun" readings from breaking down radicals, counting strokes, etc. It takes practice initially, but basically you're given the tools to look up any kanji by being able to write it in directly.

Omg. I haven't wanted to win a contest on here as much as I want to win this one. Most of them I just ignore cause its impossible for me to win, and I'm just not creative enough. But these items I want SO BAD. I never bought them myself cause they cost a pretty penny.

Thats my entry, although I know I don't really have to post it here.

Dang if i twittered id definitely be a part of this. Ive been attempting to learn japanese by following your instructions danny. Ive made flashcards of katakana, hiragana, some kanji. I also bought those two books you recommended and a Japanese sentence structure book. Thanks those books are really helpful.

Ok heres post http://twitter.com/big65mopar though I can't for the life of me figure out how to find my status on twitter.

As for the clues the only viable clue is the window, looking up information about "puni puni brought back a wiki and news about puni puni poemy and it being banned in new zealand for its depiction of children and sex ect ect.

Further looking at puni only brought up Japanese slang for soft or very soft which in the case of pudding is what it is so not sure how that relates to time.

So remembering what Danny said awhile back in his article about his recent health checkup I used that and the one viable hint in the picture to come up with my idea for a time.

The poster was tempting. I almost, almost buy it with the coupon, but saw while checking their catalog a vocabulary trainer for JLPT2. I've already have dokkai and bunpou books, so I'll priorize my studies and buy that book.

I'll give the poster a chance another time, but thanks for the coupons Max.

I'm about to begin learning in a University, but I'm trying to get a heads-up with the Hiragana and the Kana. I'm halfway through memorizing (both recognition, pronunciation, and writing) one of the sets. It's pretty rough at first, but the rest seem to get easier as you go along.

But I'm still going to leave grammar and the Kanji up to a professor.

Just ordered the volume 1 (3rd edition) and I loved the $2 ish difference between the 2-4 weeks and one week shipping on their website. $32.46~~~~

Oh and a tip, order these through borders and select "ship to store" or whatever, free shipping (that volume 1 would had been for $27 ish AFTER tax). Unfortunately, with expired protections on my comp, I ain't touching any credit cards.
