Seems to be a buzz around Otacool right now on the Japanese Internets with a load of links to collections of room photos popping up.
One of the collections that popped up were these - photos of rooms belonging to Hikikomori taken from Nocchi.
One of the rooms below belongs to a lady too.

BTW, leaving for Wonfes now - check my Twitter for updates and photos.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

I guess if I were to live alone it could end up looking remotely like that too. My family doesn't buy into the idea that a laundry basket is just a box, and so is my room...

Thats what you call a Hikikomori I suppose. Shutting yourself from the outside world and no friend to talk to. :(

Even IF I were to be a Hikikomori, I prefer things to be tidy and neat :P

I fully agree that it is sad and they need help but I assume these people are also headstrong too. They find it difficult to part with.....trash!! To be honest my room looks like a warehouse but everything is neatly packed in its own box and then in large carton boxes. I think the time has come for me to upgrade my room and my collection and invest in display furniture.

I don't get it- if that room's where they spend the most of their... Well, life, wouldn't they want to make it a bit more, if not clean, then at least a bit more organized? How do they even manage to get in/out of the room when they go to the toilet, or to grab food without damaging the manga, anime, and stuff that's all over the floor? Some of these rooms look as if they're even garbage dumpsters- there's plastic bags full of garbage all over them, and some look like a homeless dude sleeps there- he/she just piled up all the stuff they own in that single, utterly filthy and disorganized space!

Or, is it just a way of silent protest against all social norms that we know of? PUNK&ANARCHY!!

Perhaps the pictures are of people in the middle of Spring cleaning. My room kind of resembles that when I remove all my things off my shelves to dust it off and then reorganize my things into keep and dispose piles. Finally, I stuff the things in the dispose pile into garbage bags and stack the other things back onto my shelves.

Uaaaaa...Now that's cluttered. I'm really not one to talk about orderliness, being quite cluttered myself, but that's like a cluttered special attack which I haven't quite mastered yet (and I think I'll be skipping that training as well anyway). The only thing I'm really paranoid and super clean and ordered about are my figures...which might be a bit sad, hehe. But really, I have a clean sort of cluttered going. Not dirty...just lots of stuff in seemingly odd places.

Also, I like my garbage outside in the dumpster too. It's rather a bad roommate I think. Very inconsiderate, full trash bags are. They smell and refuse to use proper hygiene. So it's best to make them stay outside. Seems cruel, but sometimes inanimate, smelly objects need tough love.

But with all seriousness, I'd be very...out of sorts if I couldn't move without stepping on something.

    What pig pens.

A couple of places, I dealt with very messy people. One place I was the lead Unix sys admin. One guy had a Sun SPARC 20 "pizza box". The system had exhaust on the sides. He had a hard drive fail and he demanded the machine get fixed. I told I would fix the machine after he cleans the mess on his desk and explained to him why the HD failed because the vent was blocked. He also had crap on the floor piled up as well. He also made it impossible for me to run the lab as I saw fit. I insisted the lab be kept clean and he would always want to dump stiff in there.

Another place, had this 400 lbs woman and I had to work with her sometimes. I refused to work with her at her desk. When we moved to a new office, management put her desk in a place where it could be seen from outside. My desk on the other hand, I kept clean, they put me where it was seen.

Too much to clean, too much of a hassle, too much else too do.

Well, that's what I say anyway and my room looked like that some months ago. But then I wanted more space for other stuff, so with plan "rearrange stuff" I managed to clean it up.

As I said, this was some months ago... My room is starting to look bad again :(

Earlier in this thread someone mentioned "hoarding;" it's a psychiatric condition and I also believe that is what's happening here. I have never let my home become so cluttered and messy; I couldn't do it. If for no other reason, I would feel so sad if I did anything to damage my computers or my collection of anime, manga and figures.

My home is pretty clean, but it's not perfect, of course. You know what? After seeing this, I am going to do some cleaning! じゃ、また。

This article seems a fairly poor representation of hikikomoris as a whole; certainly not all hikikomoris live filthy slothful lives as these photos show. It would be nice to see what an even distribution of photos from hikikomoris' abodes look like; there must be plenty of totally OCD ones that would put the photos here to shame!

My roommate during freshman year lived like that. The floor on his side of the room was uneven and covered with laundry with loads of junk underneath. If you squatted low you'd smell the strong stench of months uncleaned laundry. His desk drawers were full of discarded nut shells, too. It baffled me why he had such a doting girlfriend despite all that.
