Natto is a traditional Japanese food made from fermented Soybeans - read up on it at Wikipedia if you have not come across it.
The smell is incredible and I still have not acquired the taste for it. Many Japanese people cant eat it too. Have you tried or come across Natto?
The maki sushi with the poo like substance is Natto - me wife loves it ^^;

It's sweet because of the soy sauce used. Horseradish mustard also gives it a light kick. But without either, the taste is indescribable. Like bitter gourd, without the bitter.

Makes a good quick breakfast though. I Have a small supply on hand when I'm in a rush. Just top on some freshly cooked rice and voila, carbs and protein (add egg yolk if you so feel like).

The taste is not very bad, a little salty and bitter. Definitely the smell is terrible, especially if you leave it out too long. Fresh natto is not so smelly. Week old natto is.

Although I don't see what the problem is. It's not as bad as people think.

Nice complement to breakfast sometimes, yes.

"The maki sushi with the poo like substance is Natto" LOL you make it sound funny Danny.

Natto, hmm... I would try it out of curiousity, I've never heard of it before. Sounds as though many don't like it...

Sushi on the background looks delicious, soy sauce...

I haven't tried (nor do I plan on trying) the stinky tofu here, but I have tried natto once or twice, and the smell, at least, isn't at all the same. As Chun says, stinky tofu is more like diarrhea, while natto is more along the lines of gym socks.

    Poo or vomit? YOU CHOOSE!

Well, it is rotten soy beans after all.
    :P

I tried it! It's part of my policy on food. I also tried horse sashimi, living little fish, and other stuff (hmm, now that Danny reminded me of it, I'll make a post on it soon on my blog).

I also didn't like natto. It was not as nasty as I first thought it would be, but still...

The worst part for me is that it gets all yucky, pulling strings and stuff.

And I can't deal with stuff like that.
I associate with... no, I won't even mention it or else people who likes it or are going to taste it will change their mind.

I love eating Natto. I eat it for breakfast almost every morning, but with wheat bread instead of rice because too much rice will make you fat. The tsuyu and mustard really make it better. It's also a good source for protein at the very least?

The only bad thing is that here, it costs about 180 yen for a pack of four! So eat all the natto you can -_-

As my Japanese teacher once told us, and as everyone's comments seem to show fairly well, natto is one of those love-it-or-hate-it dishes in the acquired taste category. While I don't think it's delicious, exactly, I don't mind it, and will choose to eat it largely to gross out my natto-despising acquaintances.

coming from a person that likes his tofu, soy milk, stinky tofu, tempeh and all manners of soybean products....

smells like damp hay...not stinky but just unpleasant... not as bad as stinky tofu which you can smell from across the street...you probably cant smell natto if you were standing more than 2 metres away.

taste like...well...plain boiled soybeans. bland, i always eat it with soy sauce provided. natto always comes packed with a small sachet of soy sauce and mustard.

has a very slimy constituency...the more you stir it, the slimier it gets.

its supposed to be a very healthy food packed with nutrients.

the taste isn't particularly endearing but if i had to eat it everyday, i will eat it just to piss off my brother who cant stand it.

I did smell it once, that was enough of a shock to me... when the person did eat it i was close to faint. :P
Nah, going a bit overboard... but i don't want a second encounter, if something does smell bad theres no way it would make it's way into my mouth, not even just for trying if it does taste different then it smells.
Just the expierience of... ughhh smells baaaad then you eats it and it tastes good... weird, eating it with a clothes pin on your nose?

Fermented soybean eh? In Indonesia, it's called Tauco and there are two flavors, sour and sweet. We usually use them as food seasoning :D

Describing it as poo-like substance and then me looking at it differently, I must say: I'm staying away from Payday candy bars for a while.

Hahaha. Last summer, while visiting my fiancee's family in Sendai, Japan, my soon-to-be-mother-in-law served me natto for breakfast. I was extremely shocked by the strong, intense stench. I knew I could get beyond it, but then the sticky, stringy, slimy texture made my stomach turn. I am sure the look on my face was hilarious! It was definitely a classic "gaigokujin" moment that must have been very entertaining for the whole family. I forced myself to choke it down. Despite this, I am determined to try it again and acquire a taste for it! :-D

Stinky tofu has a much more horrible, powerful, nasty smell, but the texture is normal and it tastes quite good!
