Best Japan Blog

Not sure what this all about but it was picked up by Forbes so I guess its good ^^;
dannychoo.com was voted "Best Japan Blog" and I thought it would be a good opportunity for you to share what other Japan blogs you visit - Japan blogs as in slice-o-life and news sites and *not* pr0n sites ^^;
I remember a time when I was in danger of turning dannychoo.com into an overly ecchi site and thanks to your feedback, I've been cleaning up the ecchi stuff quite a bit which is why you may be stumbling across dead urls to previous ecchi content.
If you spot overly ecchi content *written by me* on the site that you think should be deleted then please highlight it for me. Writing about Japanese subculture however means that covering some ecchi content is unavoidable - I just need to be conscious of how its presented and written.
Since I've been cleaning up, I've managed to get profiled by CNN, BBC, G4TV, Nikon, Google (will announce that later today), and be invited to various spots around the world to give presentations to corporate types and also speak at institutions. I don't think I would have had these opportunities if I ran what could have turned out into a pr0n site.
Speaking of which, my New York Times and Business Week interviews are taking ages to get published ^^;
Photo taken from my Hakone photo article.
If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.
If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

hmm Congrats one the honor^^ As for what sites I visit it that contain Japanese news, none except yours:) Your site is all I need that provides both otaku stuff as well as random tid bits on Japan, not to mention it's more personal when you talk about stuff than to listening those news anchors that just give reports.
Also not visiting other japan sites also has to do with me being blinded by the figure scene^^ Ever since you launched Figure. FM I've been into figures more than before :D
As for the pron change, I think you made a great decision, it makes it overall user friendly and allowable to search at work or school...well mostly^^ Lovely photo by the way

nice photo. Now that you mention it, I do recall having seen some of the old ecchi stuff I suppose as I've been coming around here for a couple years (before my account was created as a matter of fact). It's nice to see how the site's be growing and changing. I personally love your photography stuff =P

It was a near miss Danny. You almost lost me when things got a bit too ecchi. Still cant acces the site from work as its blocked under "lingerie" at one point it was on the "sex" filter. Gorgeous pic of Hakone BTW

congratulations danny!
Personally, i think leaving the old ecchi articles is good - They're like 'easter eggs' when you find them - Also they are a sort of legacy of what 'may have been' - Sorta like a little piece of history of dc.com

Keep doing what your doing its certainly working and I really enjoy reading your posts especially your photo articles and week in Tokyo posts.

I was once a lurker on DC.com. And over time, I found that photos were truly inspiring, and I have to admit that it had a direct influence on me picking up the camera and finding what I love; which is plucking up the courage to bring Nendos and figures outdoors for photography ^^
You bringing the community together creates a synergy of Otaku/Japan-culture sharing and spirit. Thank you Danny!

Yep I agree as well. This site is one of the best Japan blogs I've come across. It contained everything that I was interested in and a community much different and enjoyable from others.

I've pretty much use your blog as portals to other Japanese blogs when you put links on your news XD Plus I made a lot of friends through your blog that I follow their blogs as well, especially after the support they've given me ^^
I remember there used to be more cast-off figure shots here that made it a bit ecchi :P Otherwise I didn't really find it THAT ecchi.

Possibly related to the ecchi content you mentioned and having less meaning you got picked up more by media and other serious business instances. Something interesting I noticed on my own young and small scale blog is that posts with possible ecchi content gather more views but not necessarily more responses or feedback. Currently seeing a stark contrast there, some articles with nice (perhaps ecchi) art gather many views but never any responses or feedback, while others do not get as much views but do get commented a lot more.
I wonder why such a stark contrast exists?

Well...what's there to say about ecchi content, really? It's interesting, but you look at it and that's as constructive as it's going to get. ^^; Whereas other subject matter tends to attract people interested in the subject who would spend time to discuss it. :P

Which other Japanese site I visit?
Well, DC.com is my portal to Japan. So whatever other Japanese sites that I am visiting, it is linked from here. ^^,
Congratulations to be picked up as the best blog in Japan! You deserve it. For all the things you have done for the community.
Back when I first started reading DC.com, I was only interested in things about Japan. I have no whatsoever idea about figures and other stuffs, thus I used to skip it last time.
But after visiting DC.com for a year, I have changed. I used to be a lurker, but now I have participate in the community ^^, and now sitting in front of me is my first Nendoroid. And my second one is currently sitting somewhere in the post office waiting for me to go and collect her.
So yeah, I think you have done a great deal for the community! ^^,

A little ecchi here and there cannot really hurt except for those who live where the authorities can look over their shoulders. But then again, I always wanted to be subversive. Keep being excellent!

I have to agree.
The weekly photo articles are fantastic, but pretty commonly done among these types of sites. Yet you manage to slip in articles about the office, which is usually rare, and about the smaller things most others would not have picked up on.
Not to mention the photography is great, and the fact that you and your staff are still finding locations is exciting, especially when you do a photo article on that.

congrats danny
and i would of shown some other japan blogs if they haven't been abandoned by their owners, but they don't matter now since yours is a hell lot better then the ones i been at

Dude good job i have to agree with you a bit of ecchi is just Japan's culture but i think that it is the best decision to clean it up. Before i really knew anything i would look at a new article at work in Google reader and see something in the title like oppai? hmm... whats that? oh god, oh god cmd q cmd q AH! so yea...
now i can avoid it more or less
i really enjoy the japan article and anime and even come to enjoy the figures.

I just tried to imagine where DC would be today with Ecchi content.
Doesnt sound an Interview in Hustler as good if not better than an Interview in boring old NewYorkTimes? lol
As for other Japanese Culture Blog...Hmmm Tough one.
I wouldnt say that the other Blogs I visit are culture blogs but more or less the Otakus Blogs

Hmmm, I think I was with the "too much ecchi" camp; though I didn't mind it per se, I just, skipped them or browsed them without much thought.
But, now theres seems to be a complete lack of ecchi...save for the couple of random ones by other members...

Congrats danny!
I don't think the site was ever really headed towards becoming a p0rn site, and I don't think you should bother removing posts or possibly censoring pictures. Though admittedly there was a brief period where I would make sure coming to DC was the LAST thing I did in the day. ;D
The first Japanese blog I ever started reading (and still do) was Ken Ishii's blog
http://www.kenishii.com/_eng/kenblog.cgi
It's not so much about Japan itself as it is a DJ from Japan that travels a lot and coincidentally I think I've learned quite a bit about Japan from following his blog.
Another I still check up on is Mr. Gaijin Punch's blog:
http://www.gamengai.com/main.php
Kind of a random dude to follow but he always has some unique insight from someone with common interests as I.
Then of course there's here, Hector's blog, and Japan probe. There's a bunch of others I don't visit much, simply don't exist anymore, or despite being Japanese aren't about Japan (or living in Japan) itself.

congrats on featuring in Forbes plus the interviews too. regarding the removing of echi content i think i know how you feel. There are already a lot of blogs with echi content and you dont want your blog to be like them. plus it would put off possible new members from joining too. i say wise decision to remove echi stuff.
other japanese sites/blogs i visit through rss reader are mostly the otaku related ones and by other dc members.
plus the usual figure buying sites i go to now and then.

Good Job Danny. You certainly deserve the recognition! All the best in the near future project of yours too =)

Congratulations on this recognition! Another feather to add in your hat. I agree that its a good move in minimizing the "ecchi" content and then moving the figure related articles to figure.fm One of the many reasons that keeps me coming back to this blog, as you never get tired of innovating ... I think that's what I like best about it.

Your Japan articles are inspirational and show a every-day-look into Japan. Certainly the Japan blog that I visit first everyday.
What I love best about your site is the community. It is rare to find such a large community where people are not afraid of being trolled for posting what they enjoy. Also, this site has inspired me to start blogging and to do figure reviews.
As far as other Japan blogs, I do visit them because they cover the ecchi side a bit more. Places like Akiba Blog keep me up to date on what is happening in Akihabara and when new releases hit the shelf. There not safe for work but damn good at covering happening in the holy land. Wish they used your "Is ecchi" icons though so I could check at work.

If your concerned about ecchi and your online community standing, perhaps you'd run a competition to reward the member who reports the most ecchi posts.
Count me out of such contest though, I'm too busy as it is.

I don't think a little ecchi content if it is given context is bad, especially if you use the "censor patches" as needed.

Congratulations, the site deserves all the accolades it gets. I haven't been visiting many blogs about Japan recently (super busy with work), however I always try and check DC.com at least once a day.

Congrats on the rating. Your site is very detailed and interesting to readers. It provides a great window into the happenings in Japan. I hope you are very proud of the recognition you receive from this site. I know it's one of my favorite sites.

Congratulations!
You can't have a Japan blog without ecchi. I think you have a good blend of material on your site and it certainly isn't over-ecchi.
Congrats Danny! It's wonderful how well you're doing, and how widespread the site is becoming. I always check here for posts on Japan, I like that it's from an angle of someone who appreciates a lot of the same reasons why I dig Japan. I used to love http://pingmag.jp/ but they will no longer be updating..... Though there is still their archive of posts available to check out. I google search sometimes and come across blogs of JETs and they have interesting insigts as well, but none ive really bookmarked. I otherwise haven't found another place I like as much as Danny's blog.

being voted best Japan blog doesn't surprise me at all. For everyone I know who's been to Japan, Dannychoo.com has been a better resource than the books you can buy.

I read GaijinSmash, Japan Probe, Japan Newbie, Japan Sugoi, Japundit, Kirainet.com, Michael John Grist, some of Patrick Macias's stuff, Peter Payne/J-list, Pink Tentacle, Quirky Japan, Sparkplugged, Tokyo Times, and occasionally some other odds and ends (and Mimi's blog, too ;) ) .
Btw, congrats, Danny.

Congratulations Danny! DC has definitely become the place I go to for insight into life in Japan and the various subcultures and hobbies we all enjoy. Heck, it was one of the posts by you that helped me book my trip to Japan this past March, and it was one of the best decisions of my life so far. The Forbes listing is just the latest in a very long list of incredible achievements for Danny, DC, and the community. Can't wait to see what's next!
Other Japan blogs I read: Japanator, Canned Dogs.

It was wise to stop the overly ecchi posts and focus in "photo walks" and more personal-blog-like stuff. I'm missing those articles about personal growth and how to become successful. All together, you're doing a great job. Keep it up!

The slice of life is nice too but the otaku and etchi are my main draws.

You mentioned this on Twitter, but congrats again~!
There's no other blog I read as regularly as this one, even though I don't comment very often, I'm more of a lurker ^^;;
While it's your blog and you should do what you wish with it, I'm glad you've toned down on the ecchi-ness a bit, makes it easier to share with friends or family and it makes the site more professional/reputable.

*thumbs up* Great job, Danny. :D
I'm glad you're removing some of the ecchi content. I know it's unavoidable in Japan's culture and I'm okay with it, I just prefer it in small doses.
???Confused???
Well this comes at no surprise that you would get tops...CONGRATS DANNY!!!

Congratulations, and ganbattene on Dannychoo's future!
It's no mere feat to get chosen as the 'Best Japan Blog', it was much deserved. Bet it must be very satisfying for you after working so hard and putting so much effort into the site.
Your move to make the site less ecchi was a good one, it allowed you access to a wider audience that (such as myself). I'll definitely continue to enjoy your posts; all the way from Australia!

Still remember when I visited this site few years ago, it's full of oppai's post so I have been away for some time. Then rediscovered again about your site, it had been changed quite dramatic-ly.

Wow, now even Forbes. At this rate, Mirai.inc could be in contention for Forbes' new "Forbes Akiba 500" category. XD
And I hear even the New York Times is queuing to hear Danny's words of wisdom, this certainly requires some celebration, no?
In any case, congratulations, you most definitely deserve it.

Unfortunately, the central library in my city has stapled your site as an adult site. So I couldnt access DC while in the library, which totally sucks!
Congrats Danny! You add personality to all of your posts. I did start visiting shibuya246 recently... but I must admit you have the best blog I've seen so far ^^
