Shabu Shabu is a dish where thin slices of beef and other meats n veggies are dipped in hot pots that contain soup or sauces.
When all the meat n veggies have been eaten, the soup that remains in the hot pots can be poured on rice to finish off the meal.

An example of Shabu Shabu below.

Have seen similar dished in China and Malaysia. Anything similar in your neck of the woods?

I used to go to the city for shabu shabu (now I just can't justify the price for the amount of food you get). One place I went to a lot was Quickly, they also specialize in bubble tea.

Never had it, but it always sounded good. Unfortunately, the only Japanese restaurants around me that sell it sell it only as a 2-8 person dinner. My favorite meat dish so far has been the gyu don I used to get at lunch when I went back to college for the second time. When I had the time. It was soooo good.

Tried it twice in Yokosuka. They had not only different kinds of meats but you can order which country they came from. I had Japanese beef and Australian beef. Seasoning was very good. They let me eat there one time by myself but for some reason, this needs to be eaten with alot of people. When I went in a group, more people can chip in because the price of the meats add up very fast and go quick.

I know now to order a rice bowl or something to go with it to leave full. Unless you have VERY deep pockets.

In Thailand they have a whole chain called MK restaurant that has boiling water in a big pan (like a hot pot except bigger) that is in the middle of the table. Everyone puts in thin sliced meat, chicken, shrimp and veggies. Once done, you pull it out and put it in your bow. They have a variant on this where you use an inverted dome to put all the meat on. very tasty

I love Shabu Shabu, especially on cold winter nights. The fun of cooking your own foods is the best!
We occasionally eat this at home, a mix of Japanese and Chinese ingredients:(meat, seafood, vegetables and noodles). Our soup base is chicken or beef and not the Japanese Wakame, mushroom or bonito shavings soup base

Dipping sauce is saute with some peanut butter with raw egg beat in to it.

Eating that in Japan is SO EXPENSIVE!, Australia is so cheap because beef is cheaper here.
We have, "all you can eat" Shabu Shabu here , $16 per person.

It took a Shabu Shabu post to get me to sign up so I can make a comment. Because I love Shabu Shabu!!

Anyway, in Singapore, they just opened a Shabu Shabu restaurant where the waitresses are dressed up in Maid costumes. Touted to be a direct import from the streets of Akibahara.

Here in the Philippines some restaurants say its shabu shabu but some call it hot pot, I'm not sure if there's a difference. Shabu shabu here is not as simple as that. In those shabu shabu restaurants, they give you all these food choices: meat (some even have hotdogs for some reason. LOL), fish, beef, veggies, eggs and if the price is a bit higher, there's also some seafood. Then you can put everything in your soup to cook.

It's been a while since I got to eat shabu shabu. But it's nice when you sit with your family and cook your food in one pot together XD

How about an I-phone app with the Suenaga sisters (one or the other option) wearing skimpy exercise outfits doing a personal exercise routine for 20 min or so for you to follow along with?

A little like that DVD that I saw here a while back.... or like that old exercise show, The 20 Minute hard o^H^H^H^H^H I mean, The 20 Minute Work-out.. (basically 2-3 hot babes in spandex on a white turntable in a white set doing aerobics for 20 min.. )

Raw egg with Shabu Shabu? When I went to a japanese restaurant they served Shabu Shabu with ponzu sauce and/or sesame seed sauce, and that's also what I have in all my japanese cooking books. I only saw that raw egg dip to be served with Sukiyaki. But I guess you can have it with either one? I did like the raw egg dip with the sweetness of sukiyaki.

You can't throw a rock in Bangkok without hitting a shabu restaurant. My fave is called Noble Shabu and every person gets their own pot and the veggies and meat go around on a conveyor belt so you can make your own special blend. The best part is you don't pay by dish you pay by the hour. It's like 250 Baht (7USD) for 2 hours including unlimited tea. I take my staff out for a shabu lunch once a week as a treat.

Shabu Shabu's delicious. I love the way u mix the sauce with different ingredients to make a "special" sauce for urself. And it's really nice to see that we don have to waste the sauce seeing how we can use it as seasoning for rice or other dishes to eat after. :)

    i love shabu-shabu
    hmm as something similar

Kuala Lumpur have steam boat, porridge steam boat, cheese steam boat.

the porridge ones are nice, as u finish the meat n veggie u can drink the porridge, or u can choose to drink the porridge along with the meat, they also using thin sliced pork with it, so i think its kinda similar.
