Ganguro is where folks either get a suntan or wear make up to give their skin a darker appearance.
Gan = Face
Kuro = Black

When some Japanese words are mixed together, the "K" becomes a "G"

Some Ganguro folks wear a particular style of make up that turns them into Yamamba (also written as Yamanba) and often called just Mamba.

Snippet taken from Wikipedia below.

Yamanba (ヤマンバ) and manba (マンバ) are terms often used to describe extreme practitioners of ganguro fashion. Old school Yamanba and Manba; (particularly known as 2004 Manba); featured dark tans and white lipstick, pastel eye make-up, tiny metallic or glittery adhesives below the eyes, brightly-coloured contact lenses, plastic dayglo-coloured clothing, and incongruous accessories, such as Hawaiian Leis (often the Alba Rosa brand). Stickers on the face died out shortly after 2004, and for a while, Manba died. Yamanba is now more extreme, and hair is often multicoloured, and usually synthetic. 2008's Manba has seen a darker tan, and no facial decoration (stickers).

Hair is usually neon/bright colours, with pink being a favourite. Wool("dreadlocks"), extensions and clips are worn to make hair appear longer. Clothing remains the same, although Leis are worn less frequently now. Manba and Yamanba are not to be confused. Yamanba has white make-up only above the eye, while Manba has makeup below the eye also. Stuffed animals, bracelets, bells and hibiscuses are worn. The male equivalent is called a "center guy" (センター街, Sentāgai?, Center Street), a pun on the name of a pedestrian shopping street near Shibuya Station in Tokyo where yamanba and center guys are often seen.

Japan Probe has the nitty gritty on some folks back in the UK appliying themselves to the Yamamba fashion and you can see the videos at the BBC.

And just a reminder that we aim to keep the community here clean of comments discriminating against others based on their appearance or interests ^^

    I remember reading about ganguro fashion in one of those all-about-Japan books in Kinokuniya. I can't understand the appeal, but if the fashion followers love it, more power to them. It's like the craze of loose knee socks, or kigurumin (dressing in pooh bear, hamtaro or pikachu costumes).

    Then again, it may have to do with some kind of group identity. Young people want a sense of belonging/identity to a cultural subgroup and adopt its practices and fashion.

    I like the artistic expressions they have. And have seen many pictures of this style. Most of the ladies are pretty looking past the makeup / or with it. I find it intriguing that they, to varying degrees "hide, slightly reveal or accent" their beauty with it. Challenging the status, or to dare the observer to judge by the cover. I can identify with that, and be perfectly comfortable among them. But then they may look at me funny ^^;

    Yeah, I've seen them round the Piccadilly area. Someone in JapanProbe mentioned the picture at the China Town Print Club, I assumed it was just English kids doing cosplay untill I saw them in the flash XD, they always hang around any Japanese related place in London.

    ...I have to be honest here. It's their choice, but I personally find nothing attractive about it. I'm sure that they already know that, however; they get enough crap back at home about it already.

    For me, it's two factors. One is that I've never liked the use of makeup beyond little accents and touchups - I like the natural look. Two is that, well...my personal preferences simply lie with people who look asian/oriental. It may sound a bit harsh, but it probably has a lot to do with my own race (Chinese) and the way I was raised. I simply don't find non-Asians attractive, most of the time, and this is a step in the opposite direction.

    I hope I'm not offending anyone with that last bit, by the way. It's seriously just the way I'm wired.

        There is an article of ganguro and the history of it originating from the mountain hag fashion in the wikipedia : "the term yamanba derives from yama-uba, the name of a mountain hag in Japanese folklore ". As you can see the words shortened to one similar as there is a play on words that seems to be common in Japanese culture. I could go into a long winded explanation but, be it said myself, If this phenomenon were to have the same basis of a minstrel show, I wouldn't touch this with a 10 foot pole because that would be mean spirited and a polar opposite of my spirit.

Not a fan of ganguro either, and not to sound slightly camp but they must have terrible pores on their face, after wearing the make-up so long, it might not come off!

    Well, why not really. As long as there friendly I couldn't care less if people use lots of makeup. Regardless if their hair is bright purple, their pupils replaced with hazard signs or w/e. While I don't really find it attractive i guess they do themselves and that's what matters. All opinions of other people than themselves are/should be nil. One chooses how to be on their own after all. That... and i've done some horrible fashion choices in the past so i really have no right to complain about anyone's choice of clothing. :P

    Not to mention... i've got better things to do than being annoyed by how people look. Thank god.

    I can see how that fashion could be bad for your skin in the long run though, all that makeup is bound to clog your pores pretty fast.

    This looks likes it belongs on the BBC makeover show "Snog, Marry, Avoid". I'm sure everyone would vote "avoid" 100%. (They had a girl who dressed in Visual K style on the show, but they didn't make her over.)

    Isn't the whole point of ganguro in Japan an attempt at looking American? If I'm remembering that correctly then these British girls are trying to look like Japanese girls, who want to look like Americans? O_o

    A lot of girls in Britian are doing a similar style to ganguro already (many say they're copying Jodie Marsh's bleach blonde hair, tanned skin style), these kids are just taking it to another level.

    The heavy makeup plus hair is a jarring combination. I'd prefer natural tans. Extremes exist in both directions it seems, makeup-wise.

    There has to be a good way to pull off Ganguro. Painted on tan has to be the first no-no. I would imagine there HAS to be a way to pull it off and look cute, but these girls are NOT doing it.

    personally, I don't see why this is so crazy to a lot of people.
    when other people go around bleaching their skin to look paler it's fine, but when someone tries to get a tan or puts on some tanning cream or something they're "crazy"

    talk about a double standard...
