iPhone 3GS Japan Launch Event
The iPhone 3GS launch event will take place tomorrow night at Quest Hall in Harajuku near the Softbank store.
The main event will start at 22:00 and is being organized by comrade Nobi Hayashi pictured below - digital journalist and consultant for a ton of IT and gadget companies.
Press from all over the world have been called to the event and for some reason, I'm due to be up in front of them at 22:15 ^^; Maybe to announce the dannychoo.com iPhone/iPod Touch app?!
I will be in the area from 20:00 at Appliya Night (separate invitation only event) and if you are thinking of lining up for an iPhone then you may be able to get into the hall and see whats going on - think its the first 400 that get in though.
Expecting the CEO of Softbank Son Masayoshi and hopefully Aya Ueto too. My mission is to do a business card exchange with Son and have a photo with Aya.
Now I has something special for dannychoo.com readers - if you are an iPhone developer and can make it at 20:00 to Cafe Ratia ( http://www.ratia.jp/cafe/access/index.html ) Then you can join us at Appliya Night. Folks with really coolsome apps will be able to show off their apps to hundreds of people waiting for their new iPhone and probably (no promises though) to all the press at the hall.
Once you get to Cafe Ratia, say that you are a friend of Danny's at the door. I will be inside somewhere. Unfortunately this is for iPhone developers only. Costs 1,000 yen to get in.
If you are just buying an iPhone then go direct to Quest Hall and I'll drop by.

With the OS Update 3.0 for the 3G you can't do that.
But there are already programs (jailbreaked of course) you can take
videos.
So its technichally build in the 3G.

For the price they charge... I'd expect more than that frankly... like 5mp. The phones big enough after all... theres gotta be room to make the camera a bit better than just 3.
Of course, they probably are very able to do that, but arn't giving the users everything at once, making them go out and buy the new one when they release a slightly updated model...

Call me oldskool, but if I wanted to shoot a video, I'd use a purpose built digicam ^^; Same with stills, I'd use a purpose built camera. So the fact that a phone has one, IMO, is already a novelty really. I mean, we have an IXUS 70 here that shoots nicely and is compact enough, and I'll get better quality photos (and video) with it.

This is the one i've been waiting for, when the iPhone was first released the specs didn't particularly draw me in, with this big upgrade I might get one.

My mandatory two year contract with T-mobile's service ended back in April. I'm still with them. With all the updates with the iPhone, I wouldn't mind getting it now. What holds me back is AT&T. I will wait until AT&T exclusive offering ends and when other mobile companies offer iPhones in the US.

Good luck with that: considering in the US the only GSM carriers are T-Mobile and AT&T. Apple is most likely not interested in making a CDMA / TDMA iPhone, although if Verizon gets off its ass and rolls out LTE in the next years (based off the current UMTS 3G standard which the iPhone supports), it might be a viable option. I wouldn't hold your breath, though.

well, i am surprised that softbank is still aggressively putting out this advertisement campaign for the iphone, given the mediocre popularity of the phone in japan. regardless, i am sure we will be seeing early adopters queuing for it on the first day, although i hesitate to call it a worthy purchase, given you can have the OS 3.0 on the 3G generation without having to compromise too much on speed. If anything, i believe this phone will simply tie consumers over until the true successor comes along. Given that Steve Jobs is reportedly back at work, I look forward to what he does with the next generation of the iphone hardware.

iPhone 3.0, that is, the OS, is indeed available for download. But there's an actual new hardware phone (iPhone 3GS) coming out, which is what this event is for. The new phone features greater speed and more harddrive space, essentially. It does come with the 3.0 OS, which is what your sales guy told you.

I co-organized a party during WWDC in San Francisco as well, with several people from Apple and some of the top of the design field, which was also huge fun. Plus, it's quite unique to see the design team of the Palm Pre and designers from Apple's iPhone team in one room :-)
