Japanese Skirts

Up until now, many Japanese school girls have been rolling up their standard issued skirts as they thought it looked cute. This could be a thing of the past as more girls are now starting to think that short skirts look very untrendy. The image below shows the default length on the left and how it looks in mini skirt form on the right

A few reasons/theories for this long skirt boom are given.
-Osaka's way of going against the short skirt school girls in Tokyo.
-Dont have to spend so much time restoring skirt to original length when warned by the teachers.
-Dont want to get sunburnt legs.
-Girls started to adore the looks of an Ojosama school in Nara. Ojosama is a bit like what Nogizaka Haruka was.

At Itai News you can see another pic of school girls with long skirts on which look nice.
Among the comments, there are also many voices saying that longer skirts look better too.

    To me I guess it really doesn't matter .. Long or Short.. voted Short.. cause I'm a guy and I really like nice legs so.. I guess thats my honest opinion on which I prefer..

    But, Looking at it pratically.. A Longer Skirt would be warmer in the winter time. which would be helpful.. I know around here.. summer is only three months.. and winter is the rest of the year or at least thats how it seems sometimes.

    but really i do see why they may change it for winter, it'll eventually cause an evolution of layers of fat to be grown on the legs which i rather not see ^^;

      The skirt's waistband is rolled in an outward direction into itself. When you roll it too much, the rolled waistband can be seen as it will bulge through the shirt. Makes a girl look pudgy around the belly.

    I go to a school that requires uniforms. I usually wear my skirt so that the length is around the second and middle picture. Just rolled twice. ^^; The skirt sort of overwhelms you when it's not rolled, and if it's as short as the last picture, when you bend down and go up the stairs.. It's not a pleasant sight..

    I can kind of relate to why long skirts are getting popular. When I'm outside for a while, I can feel my legs getting sunburned because when you sit, the length of the skirt shortens. It's also a good feeling when you don't have to worry about someone telling you to roll down your skirt, haha.

    There should be a revision of the regulation size for skirts. That length is far too long. Standard length around here is at the least half that, the end hovering an inch or two above the knee. The girls don't need to roll as much to get it shorter.

    In the photo, I like the middle one, the shortest on the right it's not only untrendy, it looks, weird... (but I now understand how all these panchira moments on anime are not only fantasy, if schoolgirls wears skirts so short, then it might be possible).
    A very long skirt is ugly also, worse than nouns's schools, always the middle point is the better.

    some two or three years ago, I had a pleasant surprise when a new wind blew in local fashion and EVERYONE started wearing these gorgeous tiered skirts that fell nearly to the ankles. that was thrilling for me because I love wearing long skirts.

    I think the complaint about long skirts looking too proper has to do, as with nearly all fashion, with the style that a given skirt is in: a long pleated skirt will make people think I'm underage (and get my BF into trouble); a long skirt with slits will make me look sexy; a long straight skirt will get me into a business meeting and then into a club after hours.

    just my two yen. as much as I love wearing slacks and well-fitted jeans, I also prefer skirts for certain occasions, just because they look far better at those times.

    The last pic is too short, imo. In my experience (from elementary to high school I had uniform-issued skirts), rolling up those skirts too much ends up looking kind of goofy and uneven. The middle panel and the one to the right of it are just right if they want to go short without looking too awkward. So to me it really depends on the type of skirt or even the kind of girl who wears it.

    I could go either way, personally. But I'm rather amazed at the long-skirt trend, though. I've still seen the stigma that girls who wear long skirts are old-fashioned, etc. etc.

      ...That sounded so serious, deep, and sensitive for a moment. Then I realized it wasn't anything of the sort.

      I agree with the others - medium is good, and while long *could* be good, they aren't going to look right with knee socks. I've been seeing a lot of one-pieces in HK uniforms, though, so the argument is kind of moot as pertains to me directly. ^^;

              There is something wrong about tentacles. They are really creepy and should be avoided at all costs. Yuri-implying isn't the best either, but at least it's humans. There is something really sick about non-human interactions in that region.

      Not true. I prefer human dignity over bodily lust. I mean in 3D world I wouldn't feel good about exposed women unless I'm serious about them and I'm not serious about a whole bunch of school girls ^^;

      The question isn't what I would like my girlfriend to wear at home, but what I would like schoolgirls to wear in public and I find it exhibitionistic to have a too short skirt.

      In case you aren't sure of what exhibitionism is, then I will quote wikipedia "In psychiatry, exhibitionism is only considered a paraphilia once the practice begins to interfere with the quality of life or normal functioning capacity of the individual". In other words: this isn't something you would like to be classified as since it's a disorder.

    I wear some long skirts myself, but that default length looks bad. There should either be a couple inches between the hem and the knee or it should go past the knee. All the other lengths look okay, and if I were them I'd probably go with the second stage--shortened enough not to look dumpy but long enough that the teachers can't really complain of dress code violation.

    All I gotta say is... above the knee is fine by me... Below looks a bit weird... since schools in Australia all have skirts above the knee...

    But I've gotta say that knee socks don't fit well with skirts that drop below the knee...

    The short short skirt thing is alright in anime, but for me it's something that should not commonly transpire into real life and worn by school children.

    I think the longer skirts look nice, they have a sense of professionalism and class. Mini skirts just look tarty and especially on school girls, it's just begging to be preyed on by seedy old men.

    I think in the picture above, number 2 is the perfect length. Just above the knee is a classic and timeless length. You can still see the legs nicely, but its not flashing too much. I think in that picture, number one only looks very bad because the plaid colour and pattern are very unflattering of the style of the skirt.It's a perfect length. I myself like this length skirt, it works for pleated, a line, pencil, fish tail and all other types of skirts. Same for dresses too.

    However, in the picture linked at ita news, the girls in the black uniform, I love that set, the whole package looks really cute, I think its perfect. I would like a uniform set like that for my dolls too, its very beautiful.

    The one in the middle is best.

    At the high school I went to the skirts were even longer than the picture on the far left - usually they ranged from half way down the calves to past the ankles. They were really impractical and it was easy to trip when climbing the stairs in them, but the school refused to change the uniform because it was 'tradition'.

    I always wondered about miniskirts. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I never understood the girls who want to show that much to strangers/classmates. Also I don't get why people aren't allowed to be dressed to fit the weather. Skirts aren't suitable for winter.

    I think dressing like that is like prostitution. You don't care who the person is, but you care for the looks. People should care more for who they are as a person and not their looks because a living based on the looks will not last. Besides being too revealing makes other people uncomfortable. I remember once when I was hired to guide/help people and I had to talk to this woman, who showed too much of her big eyes (I was scared that they would pop into the open). I didn't like it because I was not supposed to see them meaning that there were an area where I was not supposted to look, while I was supposed to look at her... made it somewhat awkward for me and I totally didn't like it.

    This whole miniskirts are history thing reminds me of a joke I read in an old magazine once (from the 70'ties). It was a drawing of two guys walking on the street and they passed two women in miniskirts, which were so short that you could see their pantsu. One guy gets interested and turns around to look and the other one says "don't look. Miniskirts are so yesterday so you shouldn't be caught looking".

Too many tiny 6/7/8 year olds wandering round in tiny skirts and boob tubes in the UK.... they all dress way to old.... and its WEIRD! I agree. However even with long dresses there is a risk. There were a serious issue here before underwear was invented because even skirts as long as the legs didn't protect the women if they were knocked over. This made it way too easy for guys with ill intentions. The problem was somewhat reduced after a law was passed telling that the father had to pay for the child (didn't care how it was made), but it didn't eliminate the problem. Sadly women everywhere have to take care because there are weird men everywhere >_<

    Some uniforms look really good with short skirts, while some look very good with long skirts.

    Fashion comes and goes, so this will probably settle down once more when all girls think "ugh, long AND short skirts are, like, so yesterday!" and they'll start wearing shorts or something.

    ...in the worst scenario they'll come to school with pants or jeans ^^U this is what happened in my school with half the girls wearing jeans and half wearing the "obligatory" skirt. It was the crappiest uniform I've seen so no matter what you chose, you still looked horrendous.

    You know what I find even more scandalous? The gym clothes that young women wear in school? They leave very little to the imagination in terms of legs x.x.

    That's too bad. Recently, I've been seeing girls in Tokyo and Yokohama with school uniform skirt level to past the knee. Being a guy, of course I prefer shorter skirts because I like legs. The 2d girl at the top of the post on the left has my ideal skirt level.

    The final 3 are good, short skirts are always good :) 88% prefer short skirts, lol

    On a side note, when I was backpacking though Japan last year a Korean guy told me the reason a lot of Asian girls wear short skirts is because it's considered not acceptable (ie. kinda trashy) to wear low cut tops - showing leg is considered a better way to show off.
