7pm in Tokyo - Yakitori

7pm at the local shopping area grabbing a bite of Yakitori.
Yakitori is roast bits of chicken on a stick. Many places cook them on open grills just like the photo. Apart from chicken, they also have various meats and veggies too.
This place is situated on a corner where people just walk up, pick a few sticks and pay after eating. The shop owner would count how many sticks you have left and charge you together with any drinks that you may have ordered.
The choppy video below gives you an idea of a Yakitori restaurant.

would it be similar to kabab? kabab does not have any bone pieces though and is finely ground meat i think. we get spicy seasoned kabab here which is mouth watering. :slurp:

Seems a bit like Kebabs except with chicken in stead of beef, do they add onion pepper and tomato etc to the Skwewers/sticks.
I must say, food on a stick is the best.

Kebabs can have chicken too ^^; Yakitori and Kebabs are pretty much the same thing.

We have this all the time when we go to Japanese restaurants. Makes for a good appetizer. I like it with pineapple, but usually it comes with leeks.

Mmmm...Yakotori. I remember having yakotori on a few occasions in Japan. It's good, traditional, and relatively simple. Honestly does taste quite good for what it is, a bunch of meat/vegetables on sticks with some seasoning (although not much). I get the feeling that I'd be eating yakitori everyday if I lived in Japan just because of the sheer convenience (meat on a stick, you can't tell me that's not convenient).

I've noticed that Japanese restaurants usually have a counter area. The only places I've seen like that in the U.S. are bars.

There is one yakitori place inside the Japanese market in our area which is not that bad. But I should actually try it while I'm in Japan for authentic yakitori :)

mmm, yakitori is good. I think it is a little expensive though. I wonder how much it costs in Japan. Anyone know?

I really wanted yakitori when i was in japan, but most forms of it aren't strictly speaking meat, and I'm not a fan of livers, cartilage, etc. Give me good old fashioned white meat any day.

Yakitori really sounds and looks like Malaysian Sate which is also bits of chicken on a stick but by the looks of the picture the chicken pieces is bigger than out Sate

My wife and I were staying in Shibuya recently. After a long day out exploring Tokyo, we asked the receptionist at our hotel if she could recommend a nearby restaurant. She told us of a nice Yakitori place up the street and if we wanted to go she would take us to check it out. So off my wife went with the pretty receptionist to check it out. A few minutes later she comes back to get me with a grin on her face and off we go.
After a short walk we descend some steps to a tiny basement restaurant crammed with people. The owner - a small older lady - had reserved two seats for us at the bar surrounding the grill. We squeezed into our seats. We were the only non-Japanese people in the place. It was loud and very hot from the nearby grill. The head chef behind the grill would shout out in a booming voice every time somebody entered - Irashai... and the rest of the wait staff would follow Irashaimase!!!! People came down the steps to wait in line. It was clearly a popular place.
We stayed for what seemed like a long time and ordered lots of small items from the menu. All styles of chicken, beef and vegetables. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was exciting. It felt like we were getting a taste of the real Japan.
I can't wait to get back to Shibuya so I can go there again.

I loved it sooo much that when i came home from Japan, i took a big flower pot (and i mean a pretty darn big one), filled it with sand and put a grill plate on it....heat some coals up and throw them in the flower pot and make my own yakitori....the the mini-japanese garden i built on the side of the house! chimes and japanese maple tree and all! :-)
