Looks like details for Sony's PSP upgrade is out. Still no touch screen?
Some details from Kotaku below.
• Gran Turismo, LittleBigPlanet, Jak & Daxter and Metal Gear Solid are all either confirmed or mentioned.
• The Go's 16 gigs of flash memory and bluetooth support ("You can also tether it to your cell phone,") are touted.
• In discussing the PSP Go's video-playing capability, it sounds like the rental service through PSN will extend to the PSP Go.
• PSP Go will not replace the PSP-3000; the 3000 will still be kept on the market.
• The PSP Go will arrive this fall.
• It's 43 percent lighter than the PSP-3000
• It has a 3.8-inch screen

PSP Go a get for you? I'l still kinda happy with my DSi.

Original text from MARl0 below.

In an update to my previous story, the PSP Go has been leaked before Sony's E3 press conference.

Looks like the rumor from a month ago was right on the money. Some additional details include 16gigs of internal flash memory. And confirmation of only one analog nub.

Update: Here's the official photos now unveiled!

GameStop retailers in Southern California has a lot of
refurbished PSP 1000's for $119.99 (USD)

I don't understand why so many people are trading in PSP
        1000's for UNHACKABLE 2000 and 3000's.

A PSP 1000 is the greatest thing ever. In my opinion the
PSP 1000 is better than any iPod available today.

You can get brand new PSP 1000's imported for $300 (USD)
as well and i know what retailer has them too.

AFAIK, PSP 2000 are hackable with the exception of the ones with the TA-088 v3 mobo. But yea, I would prefer a 1000 just for it's epic battery compartment.

Gonna stock up on maybe 2 more 1000's before they
        really disappear for good.

I think the PSP Go may flop big time with technology
advancing more and Sony doing it's best to block mother-

Aye. What I hate most about the new PSP's in their weight. I remember when the Slim's came out (PSP 2000) it was horrid. Felt like a shitty peice of plastic in your hands, and that you could probably tear it in half.

Considering they're getting lighter and lighter. Not good. The PSP Original will never be beaten because of it's comfort of use, and pure awesome looks. The mildly better specs aren't worth the trade-off.

I think the point is, that this is the 4th version of the PSP and they just refuse to add a 2nd analog stick when the fan base goes crazy over it. Old games don't have to be reverse compatible or require patches. The PSOne first came with no analog and only newer games supported the analog. Remember how well that did?

I agree to some extent, but not on all your points. For one, I'd say that it IS more practical. It's smaller, and it no longer has the UMD drive. It makes it FAR more portable (smaller size, and vastly improved battery life with no UMD). And at least the single analog makes sense considering that it's only a remodeled PSP, and is NOT a PSP "2". Much like the DSi, it's an upgrade to the existing PSP, it's not a new one. Adding a second analog would've just split the market.

First of all, what audiences do you think they are targeting? I wouldn't expect any owner of the current PSP Slim to move on to this one for what it offers, and speculating on its price tag - I doubt many will choose it as they first one (If, of course they don't pull the Slim off the market).

Also, I woudln't compare it to the DSi, mainly because of the difference in each console's success lately. The PSP is more or less dieing because of its weak library there past few years. Even 3rd parties didn't make tha big of a difference.

The point is, that they shouldn't expect it to sell that big, if they don't emphasise more on users' needs. Battery life improoval is indeed a good addon, but people don't want a smaller size, they want a bigger screen that is still portable enough. I would say that the prior picture of your post before this one on the matter illustrates how the PSP Go! could've been a successful time and money spend (With a few modifications of course)

I don't think you understand the handheld market at all, to be honest. For one, the PSP is hardly dying. Not even close. It completely dominated the Japanese handheld market all year so far for one, and even outside of Japan, it's been doing quite well for itself. Also, 3rd parties have been really getting back on board with the PSP recently as well.

Also, as I said, convenience and portability are KEY in the handheld space. Sony's taking Nintendo's advice in this case. The PSP Go, fixes two of the original PSP's biggest flaws. Battery and portability. If you honestly think that consumers won't pick this thing up, then be prepared for a MAJOR shocker when the thing releases (especially in Japan). I know I'm on board with it (and I already own two PSPs).

Of course its dominating it, what other choice do they have?

I however disagree that 3rd parties are getting back to it *recently*. So far, every game I have recently played on it proves to be a disappointment, even from a general consumer's point of view, and even those with major parties standing behind them (FF Dissidia will be somewhat of an exception).

I already agreed with you on the Battery problem, so no need to bring that up, however I can't see how smaller is better in this case. People want quality, not an iPod

There are big games coming out for it (The KH rendition and Project Diva to name two), but most of them are aimed at the japanese market point blanc. Western audiences got Wolverine...

Are you aware how many people were hyped on Rock Band Unplugged? And do you know how gruesomely it was messed up?

I have one, and I use it mainly to play PS1 games and watch anime lately. Nippon ichi even disappointed with their Prinni effort.

I talked about its appearance on E3 in the E3 expectations thread, and if they present us with anything exclusive or attractive on a normal price - why not? But to be honest, I don't need a new one if it offers only what this picture shows.

It's not dying and it has been able to at least garner almost half the sales of the DS so it deserves credit for that.
However PSP hasn't dominated the market in Japan.
2009 (so far) - 1.41 million DS, 1.03 million PSP
            2008 - 4 million DS, 3.63 million PSP
            2007 - 7.2 million DS, 3 million PSP

Worldwide it's not faring as well as in Japan.
            2009 - 9.8 million DS, 3.56 million PSP
            2008 - 30.7 million DS, 13.3 million PSP

Good system and was able to penetrate Nintendo's death grasp on the handheld market that no one else was able to. Kudos Sony. ^^

We'll see what the PSP Go does. If they do allow options to transfer UMD games to the internal memory then that would be nice. They might need more than 16gb though. Have to wait for their E3 presentation to see if any more info is given.

Quite honestly I don't like this design. As a huge fan of the PSP since its release, I feel the first priority should have been the internal memory, followed by a second analog nub. I think this design, although more portable than its big brothers, completely defeats the solidity and comfort of holding the PSP. This looks like it'd be uncomfortable to play.

Sorry Sony, I think I'll pass on this one.

Also, we're still working on hacking the PSP-3000. I think the likelihood of this one getting a custom firmware in the next year post-release is next to none.

Wonder how much it will cost anyways? If it's under $150 I'd consider it, and it'd need to allow custom firmware. For perfectly legal reasons, of course.

I'm sure Sony has a plan for UMD owners. There's a rumor that there will be some kind of download kiosks in stores that allow you to rip your UMD games to the internal memory of the PSP Go. Just wait for their E3 presentation on Tuesday, and I'm sure everything will become clear.

I don't think there needs to be any hate against their new product, I mean you obviously haven't payed for it or even the one funding their project(if there is one) so I don't think fans have the right to tell them what they need to do with their money. Aren't these reactions one of those that Danny's been informing us about, something like "Don't live life the way others want you to, it's your short life so live it the way you want."
Handhelds aren't even for a long leisure of entertainment, thats why they are called handheld, its just a small device use to pass time while waiting for whatever you are waiting for.
See comments talking about FPS, heck why not go play it on the 360, it's their popular line up anyways and the L/R trigger for it beats other controllers for FPS.

Although it's true that the PSP is rather hard to slip into one's pockets (need deep-pocketed pants for me!), the battery is fine in terms of life; never had a time when I ran out of battery. The PSP Go seems harder for some games (the way I play Armored core), but the design makes it more portable, and I would get it if I didn't already get a PSP.

pretty hard to just add another analogue stick, esp as all previous PSP games are designed for 1.

I think everybody is forgetting that the PSOne at first didn't have ANY analog and many games were made for it. Later, they added analog, and only the games made there after had analog support. That did very well, so I don't see why they couldn't have done it for the PSP. If they did it as early has PSP2000, the affected number of games would be even smaller.

Not only that, it's technically possible to 'emulate' controls from the 2nd analog stick. There are actually 3rd party mods available to add your own 2nd analog stick, in which the controls are shared with the [] X / O, which most FPS games use as camera control. Although entirely accurate as the real analog, the pressure sensitivity function allows for very good emulation.

So, even if they added a 2nd analog later on, like now, they could have a software/firmware option to have the 2nd analog control the [] X / O buttons instead, just like the 3rd party mod. Thus making it somewhat 'reverse compatible' with many previous releases.

Might get one depending on Fate/Unlimited Codes. I like the no UMD but that also kills the available game library. I don't see it as an upgrade either for that fact.

Smaller screen and I really dislike sliding systems like the sidekick and some samsung phones.

16Gb is a lot. I don't neeed that space - 4GB is pleanty when it comes to anime marathoning in bed, and as for games - bigger ones come up to 1.2GB and most of them revolve around 500 - 700 MB.

From what I have seen from the extended amount of photos, I have to say that I do like. it. But does this mean I'll buy one? No. In truth, I want to try and buy the Crisis Core designed PSP, unless I find that I like the Dissidia designed PSP (if there is one) more. That, and the Advent Children Complete PlayStation 3.

The PSP Go is simply for those who like to have games in bulk but dislike carrying the games. As they once said, via rumors, they are removing the USB port and will allow games to be downloaded directly onto it. But that is currently a rumor and nothing else. However, I see this being something that will be a lot easier to carry and use, as well as being a new type of controller (which could use the screen for maps and whatnot).

But like I said, I am currently skipping this one. It looks hip and trendy, and I like that. But it is new and may not have the #1 function I need - a way to play USB games. That, and I will need to know more until I make my own personal, yet final decision. And I will hope that it will include a USB plug-in and that more PS1 games are put out - Namely Ehrgeiz and Final Fantasy VII. But until then... I will be seeking out PS1 RPGs and hope some luck comes my way.

I don't even see the freakin' buttons, much less that analog stick. People with big hands are going to hate this gadget. Actually, I'm betting even people with small hands like mine are going to hate it too. . . It just doesn't look ergonomic at all, which you'd think would be a must-have feature in a handheld system.

I'm not big on handheld gaming in general, but this gizmo seriously looks like a pain even for handheld fans. o.o

Actually history has proven that size, accessibility, and portability ALWAYS trumps comfort when it comes to handheld systems. Nintendo has always succeeded by making their handhelds smaller then their competitors, better battery life, and based on how easy it is to carry around with you.

Stuff like comfort, graphics, etc. always take a backseat to portability.

I don't think it's that bad design wise, but I think taking out the UMD slot is a huge mistake.. Almost as bad as Nintendo's move at ditching the GBA slot.

In the end, I'd still much rather go for the PSP 1000/2000 (because of the cfw).. ^^'

      I disagree.

With Nintendo removing the GBA slot for the DSi was needed, as GBA games were no longer being made.

And with this, while I would like the USB slot option... This is made for those who want to purchase their games through the PSN. So pretty much this is something one would want if they wanted a buttload of PS1 or PSP games and not hassle with the UMD part.

It's true that taking out the DS slot was inevitable if Nintendo wanted to add the the features that the current DSi has. However, It's a huge sacrifice if you think about it. Besides the lack of compatibility with the GBA games, another issue surfacing from this would be the lack of support for the peripherals that requires the use of the GBA slot (such as the Guitar Hero controller).

As for purchasing through the PSN, I'd much rather have the UMD as I'm the type of person that prefers a hard copy when paying good money on games. ^^'

And it looks like the PSP-Go is going to have a smaller screen than the current PSP. I just measured mine, and it's 4 1/4 inch diagonally from corner to corner. No UMD support means I won't be able to play any of my old PSP games on it too. That's a major bummer.

    I actually thought this was a joke or some computer generated fan interpretation of the next Playstation mobile console... It doesn't look too bad at the moment and looks as if it will be nice to watch movies on but if I really want an entertainment device to lug around, I think I'll look into purchasing a iPod Touch instead. Besides, I chose the DS Lite over the PSP a long while back and though the DS lacks certain aspects that the PSP has, I don't regret my choice. With the appearance of the PSP Go, I couldn't care less. The cost of this can probably get me an iPod Touch and maybe a new Figma ^^;

not sure since there's no way i've seen the actual go in flesh. but from the pics it feels as the thing is too small and the button is too close to each other. the analog nub is also almost horizontal to the d-pad. obviously you can't play long with those :/

dualshock feels nice since I can play no matter how long i want.

Size is very important for a LOT of people when it comes to handhelds. I know that I personally have never even once taken my PSP outside the house (and I've had it since launch day), because it's just way too big and clunky to carry around with me. This new smaller design would actually encourage me to take it with me when I go out.

As much as I admire the PSP, this version would deter me from buying one. Sony's initial plan of shoving a proprietary format onto customers (such as Memory Stick) rather than embracing a current and nearly universal format (such as SD and SDHC cards) has kept me away the first time around. Now that they came out with a system where games are permanently tethered to the PSP (e.g. an App Store model), there's still the risk that you can lose lots of dollars in one device (e.g. losing the device, having it bricked, the device is stolen, etc.).

Plus, I agree with everyone that the new PSP is ugly and completely unappealing.

    So for me, no PSP.

    a 'creative' type

I still remember pre-ordering the original iteration of the PSP way back, had the game-buying frenzy and since then I've not really bought any new games (still playing my way around ridge racer 2 atm!) Never liked the 2000/3000 models as they got a bit too slim for my liking I like to feel like i'm holding something, also like the mini-disc stlye UMD door on the back. Got it sync'd with my PS3 so I watch the odd playTV/d'loaded film through it.

I like the idea behind it, certainly cuts down on size and weight and a larger screen is going to be nice but if they're moving into digital downloads for games does that mean a) you can't walk into a shop and buy a game and b)will it be backward compatable i.e. those with older PSP's be able to download them and play them? Either way UMD's should drop to bargain prices!

This is quite different from the other PSP indeed. Doesn't look like it'll read UMD lol. Anyways I'm already ok with my 2000 (・∀・)

Awesome new handheld - but will Sony be able to knock Nintendo from 1st place?

People have already pointed out that it still does not offer screen protection like the DS however the decision to scrap UMDs in this version is welcomed.

I think the UMD is killing them. But Sony will release a software were PSP owner can convert their UMD games and put it on Mstick. KUDOS! to that.

Yup I totally agree on that
No UMD drive, smaller screen, still no touch screen, ugly slide with gameboy color like buttons
All this just make the PSP GO look like a old product
Will prefer to buy DSi that a PSP GO

Sony is probably looking at a design form in the league of the current portables and the iPhone so smaller in this case is relative as it means more portable.
I gotta say I more concerned about the UMD drive and the 16gig we offered with this one, still alot of questions sony is not answering.

I was looking online for some new info I didnt already know about the Go when I came across this page and I had to create a account just to say this, most of you are IDIOTS! With the exception of MARl0 and a few other, the majority of you are just saying random uninformed asinine jibberish as it comes to mind! First every PSP to date has been hacked, second if an electonic can be assembled it can be hacked if enough virgin nerds try so the Go wont be far behind, third since when did a touchscreen become the deciding factor in what makes a handheld good, you got along fine without one before the childish DS came out and the over priced i products, fourth i products are overpriced but yet people break their necks to buy the new i whatever every year, your as stupid as the people who spend 60 bucks on Madden every year, ITS THE SAME GAME! Fifth the DS is the king of ports and remakes but yet I saw some MORON make the claim that the PSP only has ports, sixth if you can honestly sit there and say that with the line up the PSP has comming out this holiday season and say theres no good games comming, your dumber than I could have imagined! Seventh Gran Tourismo WILL BE RELEASED OCTOBER 1ST stop sticking your feet in your mouths and do some research! Eight, never in my life has follow the leader been more apparent than in these comments, one person says I dont like it its ugly the drones line up and follow suite. Apparently the only thing needed to shock & awe you giblets is stick a touchscreen on it then you can charge whatever you want for it! Oh, and you rocket scientist werent gonna get a second analog stick when the 1000 didnt have one, you science fair winners are going to have to wait for the PSP 2 for that. While I agree I will miss UMDs ill still be geting a Go because my 3000 broke about six months ago and I knew they'd release another model so I waited. I know if this post is ever seen most of you wont read the whole thing and post some asinine insult along the lines of what are you a Sony employee, but for those who do read the whole thing it at least shows your smarter than most of the idiots who posted a comment on this page!

Will wait for more reviews from actual owners and how much the download content cost. PSP Go is bad news for gamers who uses liberated games found in the internet. Though not all hope are lost since, human technology is not perfect, there is always souls out there will be able to liberate the games :D

Even tough I like the smaller design I'm still sticking with my PSP Slim & Lite.
The two biggest reasons are .

** The PSP Go is 249 euro's compared to a Slim & lite that goes for 159 now (WOW ! big price increase)
** According to Sony spokesman, the PSP Go's battery life is -1 hr of that of the Slim & Lite , smaller design meant smaller battery and i just wont settle for that.

That, and I don't mind carrying the slim & lite around if I want to, it's not that big.
