        38km/l?! that's... 90 mpg, right? i'm getting like 21km/l (50mpg) with a 2007 prius. if that number holds true i woulda scraped the whole superman thing and just put a giant 38 on the screen for the entire commercial ^^;

    >.<

    I've never been a fan of the Prius. They aren't as green as people and celebrities make them out to be. Sure, they may do OK for city driving when you're going under 30 MPH (and only on the electric motor), but once you stray above that or get the slightest bit heavy with your foot, the gasoline engine pretty much steps in and takes over. At that point, all fuel savings pretty much goes away since it's a small gasoline engine trying to lug around several hundred pounds worth of battery.

    As for practicality, the Prius looks big on the outside. However, having tested one out, it's actually pretty poor on rear cargo space since half the trunk space is being taken up by battery and is unusable.

    Then there's the carbon footprint. The batteries are pretty environmentally costly to produce and are difficult to recycle once they're used up. So an arguably more economical car to drive is much more environmentally damaging to produce...

    Then there's the price. If you're after trying to save money on fuel, don't forget the up-front cost for owning one over a normal car (say, a Toyota Corolla). A Prius starts at $22k while a Corolla starts at $15k. Granted, there may be some extra options that a base Corolla doesn't have, so let's use the Corolla XLE which starts at $18k. That extra $4k gets you second engine (they both have a 1.8L I4 engine) and are comparable in size and something that isn't quite as fun to drive. How long would it take for the more expensive Prius to actually pay for itself in fuel costs? At least a couple years, I'd say...

    At this point, there are two alternative energy vehicles I can actually say I'm excited about. First is the Honda FCX Clarity, which is hydrogen based. Second is the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid. I think the Clarity is exciting because it actually uses an alternative fuel source and drives like a normal car (and not like a big couch on wheels). The Volt is interesting because never at any point is the car being driven by the gasoline engine. It is used as a generator to feed energy into the batteries that power the motor the drives the wheels. As a result, the engine can run at it's peak efficiency (~3500RPM) and you always get the direct drive and power from the electric motor. What's even better is that you can plug it in at night to charge so you'll never need gasoline for the daily commute.

    I just realized I wrote quite a bit there. Sorry to go on a rant, Danny... I really don't like all the hype that goes with the "eco friendly" Prius... ^^;;

      I completely agree with you, but you also have to remember that their are two kinds of people who are into green cars.
      1. people that want to save on gas.
      2. people that want to get off foreign oil and stop sending money to unstable terrorist sheltering counties.

      For people in the first category the Prius is fine. For the second kind cars like the Clarity and Volt are fine. (even thou the clarity is just a PR stunt)

      and just wondering here, but do you frequent gm-volt.com it's a great place to talk about the volt and the whole green car movement in general.

        So if you want to save on gas, then buy a diesel. Just drive it normally and you easily get 40-50MPG. Or buy a Prius and spend your time driving carefully and staring at the energy distribution monitor to make sure you're hitting good numbers.

        Volkswagen makes a couple of good cars with TDI engines. They're pretty clean burning, perform well when you want it to, and get good mileage to boot. The Prius is a car a lot of people buy to make themselves feel like they're doing something for the environment. Kind of like those people who buy carbon credits so they can feel better about destroying the environment...

        I really like the Clarity in that it is a good stab at finding an alternative energy source without taking away the things that make us so attached to our cars. Plug-in electric cars don't work because they take too long to refill and can't go very far. We've come to depend on a mode of transport that is easy to keep running, mile after mile. We want to be able to pull over for a couple of minutes, plug in, and then be off again without a huge hassle.

        Hydrogen may not be the fuel of the future, but it takes a stab at just what might be. Now we just need Arnie to help the other 49 states to buy on to setting up a Hydrogen infrastructure...

        Imagine trying to drive across the country with a plug-in electric car. It would take months, since you'd have to stop for 12 hours every 200 miles. Compare that to a gasoline or (maybe eventually) hydrogen fueled car. Pull over, fill up, keep going. That's the life style we've grown accustomed to.

      Hybrid Electric vehicle would work in most countries in the world except the United States, things are too spread out here. It will be a waste of effort for me to buy a hybrid, because I travel 35 miles to work one way and on reverse commute so zero traffic. I don't even need to brake all that often, I get on the road and step on the gas. I get zero advantage here. We have yet to see a mountain of hybrid battery lining up in the recycle bin, until then we won't know whether we are just digging another hole.

        There's an interesting study out there showing how a Prius has a higher "dust to dust" impact than a Hummer H1. Although the study was later shown to be full of all sorts of bad science and assumptions, it begs the question. The Hummer is a bit of an extreme example used to make a point, but what if you replace Hummer H1 with <insert comparable passenger vehicle here>?

        I think hybrids are a good intermediary until something else is found. It is in no way the be-all and end-all.

        Take the Volt for example. Since it doesn't rely on the gasoline engine to drive the vehicle, there's much less to worry about when a new fuel source emerges. Just swap out the gas-powered generator with a <insert new fuel here>-powered generator. Heck, it could be nuclear powered for all the rest of the car cares; the electric motor is driving everything.

      Sadly, diesel didn't make it big in the US, unlike in Europe. There's probably some sort of stigma or old belief that oil burners were worse for the environment... Though what about NOx emissions? They're just as bad as CO2, and governments are so hell bent on controlling only CO2...

    the prius is utter garbage. Its funny when a prius owner finds out his/her eco car gets worse mileage than a porsch when traveling into a 10mph headwind at 65mph. Then theres the whole carbon footprint thing that doesn't take into account them replacong their battery at 8-10,000 a pop every few years. hardly a SUPER car.

    I have to say that almost all the Priuses I see on the road in my area are driven by HORRIBLE drivers. It's like they think they have the right to drive extremely poorly because their car is slightly more planet friendly than the rest.

      I look at it this way... if someone is driving poorly, I look at what they drive. If it's more expensive than what I have, then it's OK for them to run into me. The insurance impact will be far greater and they'll be in a lot more pain than me.

      Since a Prius has the "green premium" on it, it's pretty much automatically more expensive than what I'm driving right now (Mazda3).

    oddly i notice 2 very polar kinds of prius drivers- some that drive slower than a turtle with a broken leg and those that drive like they have a pregnant lady in the car LOL
    i have seen a lot of prius' on the road because people here in cali think that driving a prius or hybrid will "save the earth" which is the biggest load of _____! ever
    the only thing on a prius that i actually want is the diamond lane accessible sticker!

    Drive a Prius. Look at the trees smile at you while you drive past. Smile back, give a wave. Then run over the kid who ran across the road to fetch his ball cause he didnt hear you coming.

    Life is wonderful in a Prius.

    I think Asia is one of the only places where there is such blatant advertising using things that have no relation at all. They try to tie it together with a "super hybrid" but there must surely be a better tie in.
