"Nankotsu" [軟骨] is the word for "chicken cartilage" - something which I only started to eat when I came to japan.
This particular dish is Kankotsu Kara-age or "deep dried chicken cartilage" - tastes great with a squeeze of lemon. Wonder why Rin looks so pleased - maybe she spiked the chicken with something.
Is Nankotsu a typical dish in your neck of the woods?

I don't think I could find cartilages tasty. I consider cartilages as something that is not meant to be eaten.

I... kinda share the same thought.
Actually, I once accidentally ordered it from an authentic Jap restaurant in SG not knowing what it was.
When it came, we tried to eat it... but its... weird.
Guess we're not used to it.
But the ones in the picture above does look heaaps good...lol

    Does it taste crunchy overall? I think my mom likes to make it in different style where she fries it first and then cook it in a stew type thing, it becomes jelly like when she's done ^^;

You'd be surprised at what things that just by deep-frying can be made edible or even tasty. But then again, its really just the grease and the spices you are tasting.

I'm assuming it's that part on the chicken breas~ts. That white looking soft bone.
Parents once tried to make me taste that bone... my dad always eats it when he eats chicken.

Only cartilage I eat is on those Chinese braised chicken feet.

As Danny said, cartilage is any kind of soft bone.

For nankotsu, the most commonly used part is the caudal end of the sternum which is the lowest part of the keel (or carina) labelled as (6) in the following anatomy chart:

      http://www.avianweb.com/images/birds/skeleton.gif

"deep dried chicken cartilage"? You meant deep fried right? hehe

I think eating chicken cartilage is a cultural thing. I learned as a kid not to eat it and toss it away like fat and bones and other things you don't eat from your meat. My boyfriend, who's vietnamese, was taught from his mum to eat it as a kid and loves it. He also loves chicken feet. My parents never fed me chicken feet, I did not know it was edible until he told me... so it's pretty much a cultural thing. I did try cartilage after he told me "eat it, it's good!!" but it takes some getting used to. It's not bad, it's very crunchy!!!

Never really went out of my way to eat chicken cartlidge before. But in Thailand, their chicken curry had lots of cartlidge, cracked bones, and bone marrow. As gross as that sounds, it was sooo good.

"Is Nankotsu a typical dish in your neck of the woods?"

Here in the Philippines, several popular street foods are made by grilling skewered chicken and pig parts. I'm not talking about grilling up the meat, I'm talking barbecued bits-n-kibbles.

Just off the top of my-now-very-hungry-head, we have:

Chicken - heads, feet, blood (allowed to clot into blocks), intestines, butts (after cleaning), giblets

Pork - ears (chopped into slivers), snout, intestines again. The ears and face also form the basis of a favorite food to eat with beer and liquor.

I think I've eaten nankotsu, only it didn't come deep-fried.

I forgot to add we also eat several kinds of pork stews involving the internal organs, one of them with the liquid made out of pig's blood and a shot of vinegar.

Also, someone upthread mentioned Balut. They're great straight out of the shell, and some people also use them to make other dishes. I love it but 'tis hell on the arteries, so I try to eat that stuff just once a week or so.

Found myself accidentally munching on some while having chicken once. It was wierd, felt like bone, but I managed to chomp through it, then it had a slight grissle/suet feel to it. Definately an acquired taste. I'm sure it tastes fine, it's just the texture I could never get used to.

I haven't seen a local dish like that. But I naturally eat cartilages: chicken, cow. It's not about the taste but the feeling or may be the sound of cracking them. I guess, dogs have the same pleasure when they have a big bone to chew. =P

    =/ Hungry~~~

Lol, I always give that part to my dog, we tend to not give him bones but rather the cartilage including the end parts of a drumstick.

I only eat a bit when I buy fried chicken at KFC and there's some on the chicken piece, otherwise I throw most of it in the bin.
