Japan's Economic Stimulus

The Japanese government has been dishing out money to all citizens including foreigners in an attempt to get folks to buy stuff. The economic stimulus package is 12,000 yen (currently about 125 USD) and I already got mine although I have not cashed it yet.

McDonalds Japan is selling a booklet of coupons for exactly 12,000 yen which is worth 20,000 yen of health food - looks like they want a slice of that stimulus package. The video below shows you just how much food that is - enough to feed 29 people.

What would you do with your 12,000 yen? Is your government also dishing out money for your folks?

    Weird way to stimulate economy...
    Shows how different today Japan is.
    Decades ago, I guess the government (or the emperor) would need only to ask for people to spend a little more.

    Food coupons are kinda weird too. Because food is a basic necessity... so I don't think people will just stop eating because of the crisis.

    Now, discounts to other stuff like anime DVDs, manga, figures, cars, electronics and other stuff, THAT I can understand.

    The government needs to create ways to make rich people spend more.
    Making poor people spend will only increase debts.

    But anyways, loved the Galaxy Angels music on the video. xD

      You should get a new monitor if your eyes disagree with your current one. I discarded a monitor only due to this issue. It can have harmful long term health effects to have a bad monitor because it's not just the eyes which are affected. It's also the brain and you risk building up the ability to collapse or other similar nasty attacks and once you have the ability it will not go away again even with a newe monitor. It's like allergy, once you added that feature to the body you are usually stuck with it for life.

      In a nut shell: Buying generates business for companies who are in financial crisis due to poor sales. Through an increase in generated revenue will these businesses be capable of growth.

      Currently, companies are folding left and right because demand is low leading to falling revenue and increasing debt. Cutting production and laying off workers only goes so far to try and save a business organization before the entire entity falls apart. This adds to the problem as more people who don't have jobs will be less likely to spend due to no income. While saving is a good idea it contributes to the overall depression of the buy-sell profit system that is at the basis of a capitalist economy. People don't buy, people can't sell.

      That's why the government is trying to push people to spend, even just a little bit. Those who are financially stable are also urged to buy houses as prices are falling along with mortgage rates. A housing market rut is a golden opportunity to purchase a nice home for a cheap price, only if you have the money to do so.

      The same can also be said about other things as well. Prices ultimately fall making it enticing to spend. But with job security in question, people who could spend don't.

    I remember when the US government did the same thing last year, except it was about $400 to each person that paid any taxes. I used mine to buy a XBox 360. This year my tax return went to a bunch of figures, including a Wonderfest Figma Konata, and a PSP.

    Right now, if I got ~$125, it'd probably go to figures (or the credit card bill with the charges from other figures...).

      I heard the stimulus package changed this tax year. Instead of one big check they're going to implement a system where it adds to your pay check. I think it's done through tax cuts where they don't take so much out or the company you work for adds a little bit more every time they pay you.

    I have some serious issues with this form of stimulus. Our government is currently going through a similar process, handing out AU$900 to anyone under a certain income bracket who paid tax last year (notably this means my girlfriend doesn't get it as, because of her employment, she didn't pay tax). Problem is it's only a short term measure, it doesn't actually address the deeper problems of job security or creating long term projects to keep money flowing... frankly I think it's a waste.

    However, at risk of sounding hypocritical: I'm not about to give back my Rudbux on principal ^^;

    I really think that people who doesn't really affected by the economic downturn, shouldn't be using their share of stimulus package... It calls for a bit of self-conscience... but I think people, who will spend anyway without this, should not be using their share.... well, that's just me... Since this is created to stimulate people to spend their money in hope of stimulating the economy...

    As for me, I would prefer to spend it on Yoshinoya than McD, but above all, I would rather support the otaku-sphere business and spend it on figures, eroge, or the likes, rather than spending it on big money monger company....^^

    Something like that happened for Hong Kong as well fairly recently (around 1 year ago). Not as much as 12000 Yen (as Hong Kong is not a nation and the government won't have that much fund to donate), but I think the impact isn't that much. Funny enough was that McDonalds did something to encourage the so-called stimulus too and did a lot of giveaways to poorer people as well.

    12000 Yen? That's more than enough for the upcoming Alter Fate figure I have preordered in the local shop. But otherwise I'll just put it in the bank for further use.

    Yet interestingly enough, I did blog about what I can buy with just 200HKD (~25USD/2450Yen) not too long ago. A coincidence, perhaps?

But buying this "economic stimulus package" from big corps like McDonalds isn't really helping economies in Japan and not just because it's very unhealty, They should spend more on local store, resturants or markets at least learn how to cook. I mean I would rather pay 500yen for miso ramen all month, than rip off Macdonalds

But then again, there was a huge news coverage a few years ago regarding how a certain American guy lost like 40lbs from eating Mickey D's everyday. My only objection to this, however, is that he was initially quite massive and it's fairly easy for bigger people to lose significant amount of weight than average-sized people. >.<;;

    Interesting that McDonalds' is pushing people so hard to spend the stimulus package on them. Seeing how they are a multinational, I am not sure how much of that money would remain in circulation in the Japanese economy, which appears to be the whole point of this stimulus.

    Seeing how the 12000 is for 22890 of goodies in coupons, it doesn't seem like a bad deal. Plus, not all McDonalds outlets are operated by a head out of Japan--this is where franchisees who only pay a regular fee to McDonalds but keep everything else come into play. It still keeps people going to McDonalds in Japan where Japanese people work instead of letting outlets potentially go into the red and shut down. That being said, they probably don't expect all the coupons bought to be used so there's profit there for whatever branch is managing that promotion.

    Not the same here, just less interest for banks and a law to allow 100% usage of unemployment fund (CTS in spanish), also more infrastructure projects.

    The problem with a stimulus package is that it doesn't assuage people's fear of the bad economy. Even if you give out money, if the people won't spend it, nothing happens. If everybody spent their money, it would probably actually do something.

    I'd save the money. But youknow what I see happening with this?

    Otaku taking advantage of it and using their stimulus package to buy food for a month. If they starve a bit and eat one meal a day they could do it. Then the rest of the money can go to rent and merchandise. ^^;

    To be honest my country puts out these stimulus packs every year. And everyone pretty much already knows the us is so far in debt that i don't even think are government cares about the well being of it.
