Punynari gets along to Odaiba and takes a few pics for us of the 1/1 scale Gundam thats currently being built - more pics at his burogu.

From the looks of these photos, it looks like they've done a really good job in making RX78 look more than decent.
There is a 1/3 Zeta Gundam built many moons ago but looks far from decent.

Love the markings on the legs.

And we get to see a bit of the arms too. Cant wait to go this Summer! We should do a dannychoo.com meetup and go together.

Original text from punynari below.
I made a trip to Odaiba today to see the currently underconstruction RX-78 Gundam from the original Gundam series. This is a life sized Gundam that has some functionality (or for show stuff) like blowing out steam. Who knows if I’ll actually be in Japan when its completed but at least I can say that I have seen its construction. It’s supposed to be completed in July and up for 2 months. Where it will go from there? I don’t know. Hopefully not dismantled or something…

Earlier, this Gundam was photoed for Dannychoo but that was a half a month ago. Let’s take a look at how far along the Japanese are in meeting their July deadline.

Earlier construction article here if you want to compare to see the difference half a month has made.

More pics and direction info on my blog.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

This item was posted in the Gundam category. You can see more of everything else or subscribe via RSS instead.

      July 2009?
Thats like soon... its really really cool
I am pretty sure that logically, one won't dismantle it after putting in such efforts.
Probably moved to a more suitable locationg after the initial publicity.
It does look really nice and more modern(round/sleek). The details are pretty cool too... look forward to pics

Sadly for the same reason we can't do things like that here in the U.S. It's because Japan is the only country crazy enough, and dedicated enough to build something like this. I's just sooo cool.

I fear that they will take it down after two months to prevent it from falling down on it's own eventually due to lack of rust protection. They likely saved a lot of money if they didn't build it to last forever.

This will become a very very awesome statue. There will be lights on its eyes and shoulders, and smoke effects from the chest vents too. There are probably more decals on the statue than on an MG Ver. Ka model (awesome). I heard the new HGUC Gundam 30th Anniversary Version may be based off this design, but too bad it's not gonna come with a gigantic decal sheet to plaster its body with. :P

It's a shame that it's only going to be up for a couple of months? Is it due to money spent building it, and money for upkeep? I agree they should make this a monument of some kind.

What better way to show Japan's military might, than to build a Gundam?
