Japanese Toilet Etiquette

Are you fed up of mopping the floor and wiping the walls after you take a pee?
Are you fed up of your dolphin hitting the side of the toilet when you sit down to pee?
If the answer is "holy yes!" then you need to kneel down to pee!

There is good news for those who are currently thinking "But thy knees will hurt from kneeling down!"

A product called Tenshi no Hizamakura (Angels Knee Pillow) will solve you kneeling problems for only 5,800 yen.
As you can see from the diagram below, one either splashes all over the gaff or knocks their dolphin on the side of the toilet. The diagram on the far right shows how pee can be exposed of without fuss.

And this is how its done - by kneeling! Peeing has never been such a fun experience as you can see by the mens expressions.

The different type of Angel Knee Pillows and how you can arrange them. The one joined together is the "economy" version for 4,800 yen.

And this is how your toilet will look like - blessed by an angel.

And regarding the poll - if you pee standing up and splash about then I recommend that you wipe up after - one should not just expect other family members to wipe up after you.
[/lecture]

Looks like this is old news but I only stumbled onto it today at Tokyo Times.
Also discovered a toilet otaku on youtube.

Despite the illustrations, this sounds like it would be more of a problem in low-to-the-ground, Japanese toilets than Western ones.

The only time I ever have any problems with splashing is after a few drinks when my aim takes a turn for the worse. Now that I think about it, the angel-knee pillow might be a good place to rest your head after a few too many.

damn right. it actually feels so good that I tend to pass out in that position. Some folks say that that has something to do with my habit of drinking massive amounts of hard liquor as fast as possible but who knows...

Tried that a few times and it really doesn't feel good. On top of that toilets usually aren't clean so that's two reasons to avoid it. It usually happens when I'm really tired and sit to avoid misfires. In such a case the dolphin will go everywhere and I get more misfires than if I stand (all women: read this and remember that!)

Thinking about it right now I wonder if I should consider women lucky. They can just sit and they never make misfires. They need to wipe themself though :/

I sit down, so I can relax and forget about aiming or noises (I find very uncomforting all the big noise of splash from large range, specially if there are guest at home). Also, can do the bombing at the same time, is far way convenient. And as @Phenie said, how can you knock your dolphin with the sides of the toilet???

But also is convenient standing out when you're not in your throne, like on restaurants or gas stations.

That will convert your regular WC into an urinal. Useful if you don't like to sit down, but it's not my case. But I like urinals! If there are bidets on bathrooms (for women?) why not urinals?

Do they have urinals in homes? Judging by that picture they do. Having a separate urinal would solve alot of problems right there. Unless your worried about missing your target in a public urinal you could bring those along with you. That thing makes no sense.

Some Japanese homes do. My friend use to call it "her father's special toilet" ... LOL Another friend bought me to a friend of his house (this guy is loaded) and he had the craziest urinal I had ever had the privilege of taking a leak in.

I don't know why so many guys have a problem with sitting down to pee. Except in public, where the urinals often need a good scrub before attempting a landing. But at home where a clean urinal is a given, I find sitting down a great way to relax and catch up on some reading.

Leave it to Japan to pave the way in toilet technology...or urinating technology?...something like that. It's really a good idea, but I think I will stick with my own way of peeing thank you. :D

Regarding the poll: I always pee laying down. It turns bathroom time into a video game like scenario! Just hope you have good aim. XD

But seriously, At home, or friends houses that I know keep their toilets clean (Emphasis on this.. Clean is a nessicity) Then I'd prefer to sit to wee. Just easier on me.. I can do some deep thinking while I'm there.. and when drunk sitting takes care of the whole aim and balance thing.

Now, if not clean.. then stand all the way. Or if All thats a available is the side of the garage.. well then Stand and salute ^_^

I have to say that the illustrations are totally wrong too. Water pouring from a tea kettle has very little pressure behind it, when a guy pees his bladder is forcing the stream out at a much faster rate. kneeling down like that is a sure way to get pee all over your clothes, and that's gross.

In all my years I've never heard of anyone lieing down to pee, only if you were in the hospital and had surgery, I did, and they put a catherder in the dolphin, it sure did hurt when they took it out. Secondly I don't have a stand up urinal in my house just regular toilet.
Just stand and do it, if you splash cleanit it up. and it would be kinda hard to carry those around with you wherever you go, kinda inconvient.
When i was growing up and went to my grandparents house before they had indoor plumbing, they had an "Outhouse"...lol one side for women and the other side for the guys. Talk about stink????? phew phew.

    and cleaner!!!!
AND YOU DONT HAVE TO AIM AT ALL!!!

i do it *ONLY* during the winter since i dont like sitting my bare ass on a cold plastic seat in the morning okay???!??? and im usually half-awake and aiming is too much of a pain...
    ....

(im pretty bad at justifying myself...^^")
im probably the only person here who (admittedly) actually does the kneel

Lol. When I first looked at the first picture, I thought there were a pair of mini-toilets with a soft cushion for the lid. I guess they kind of designed it that way to illustrate it's relationship to an actual toilet.

this would be useful when you have the urge to barf after drinking too much. i know plenty of people who kneel @ the porcelain alter every time they've had too much of the jesus juice (^_^)-b

also, i know a bunch of people that pee lying down. my patients do that all the time. especially during the overnight shift when they're sleeping. good thing for adult diapers >^_^<

I was just reminded of that screen from Robocop where the other executives fled the toilet after the evil EVP entered. One of them pee-ed on his own pants in his haste to get away. How will one escape if one is kneeling?? Haha!

That is really disturbing, needless to say you all should upgrade to USA style toilets. Even with these you can accidentally buy the wrong seat and get a long forward one where you, a male, sits down and something is crammed into the front of the bowl which is a major malfunction. Anyway they have water saver one too here.

The real toilet etiquette world wide should be, you pee on the seat you get hit in the head with a base ball bat, every time. You leave stuff in the bowl you get hit on the head with a base ball bat. You don't close the seat and the lid after you are done, you get hit in the head with a base ball bat, every time.

Taking a leak in a bowl shows ones advance in evolution. Those males who try to make the deepest most mighty drilling into the water sounding Niagra falls noise are cavemen. The best idea is to take a leak above the edge of the water in the bowl to make the water spin thereby not making noise which would wake up every one in the house at 1:30am , 3:30am and 5am.....................

Had to wait to post on this one because it took some time to cycle through how to respond and down with little toilets!!!!! :D (nothing personal we live in different worlds after all) / big smile.
