7pm-ish. Out having some Onigiri for dinner.
Onigiri [おにぎり] is usually rice stuffed with a filling and made into the shape of a triangle which is then wrapped in some crispy seaweed.

Today I'm having some Okra and Mentaiko onigiri. Some Mugi tea on the side. About 230 yen for one freshly made onigiri.

Just wondering, the seaweed will get wet no matter what right?
I mean after wrapping the rice for a while.

Just wondering if its just me or its normal.

Then it becomes hard to bite off a wet seaweed >_<

The onigiri I bought from the supermarkets were refrigerated and kept cool, but the seaweed remained quite dry and crispy.

They probably added some agent in it which keeps the moisture off.

Looking at that onigiri though, how do you eat it with the crispy seaweed outer-casing?? Is it so crispy that it almost explodes when you touch it, or do you have to attack it with a machete?

There's one thing that I can't imagine, okra onigiri? In my past experiences with okra, the taste is quite horrible and it has to be boiled down to some sort of okra soup in order for it to be edible. I'm kinda curious as to how that tastes like actually.

if you think about it yes okra in raw state is not good it has to be blanched this way its easily edible and mix in with light soy souce (classic filipino quick treat perhaps)

opening the ready packed ones was a nightmare
It was the night before the flight home from Japan... *memory vision*

I distinctly remember there were 3 'tabs' to pull.
So i pulled the tab labeled '1'. Nothing happened. so i went ahead and pulled all 3, thinking "you gotta deploy the 'tabs/flaps' first and somehow pull all 3 at the same time"

Well, lets just say i went through 4 of them with no success.

i love smoked salmon onigiri the best. especially when the onigiri is really cold, but have to eat it really fast before the nori gets wet.

Tried out Onigiri the first time in the plane to Tokyo. Was really delicious and bought here and there some in a conbini in Tokyo as a snack.

Never made some myself. Made sushi, though. Want to try making Onigiri but I think I need a rice steamer (is this the correct english word? Or is rice cooker the right word to use?) first.
