Japan Car Parking

This was one of the reasons why we decided to go for the Nissan March (our green car). Driving space and parking is generally tiny and we were afraid of scratching up the car - but ended up getting scratched up anyway by wifey ^^;

Some living-in-Japan knowledge for you. Car navigation systems by default choose routes where roads are wider than a few meters (cant remember exact number). This means that the navigation system may plot a route which actually takes longer. To get around this, choose "route by shortest distance" which is Kyori Yuusen [距離優先] on the navigation.

Have a look at our Car Navigation to see what sort of devices you will be using in Japan. Do you use car navigational systems in your neck of the woods?

Check out the video to see one of the smallest parking spaces ever. Love the background music when he parks ^^;

Original text from Hikaru Kazushime below.

Found this on JapanProbe:
Video of a man in Kobe who converted a storage area under some stairs into a parking space:

According to the narrator, the man first measured the parking space, and then bought a car that fit into it. -From JapanProbe

Seriously, who does this? You can just make a parking space? But hey, as long as nobody minds I guess...and I'm sure the fellow wont have to worry about bird droppings...

    At least he can actually get a parking space, and it looks like he's getting it for free too. Where I live in Manhattan, you have to pay $500 a month for a permanent parking space in a garage.

      Not really. For people in high-density urban areas, the biggest deterrant to getting a car isn't the price of the car, or even gas. It's having a parking space.

      Without that space, he probably wouldn't even be able to own a car.

    i remember watching a vid of (another japanese show) these guys parking in spaces with only 2mm of clearance each side - i think they were with Minis....or some sort of Kei car

    Also, i hate Navi systems - They make you dumber and you start relying heavily on them. Yes they can be useful in those completely lost situations, but i never gotten lost before. That, and often a GPS can take you on a long route even if you know a shorter/faster one.

      I guess you've never used a Navi in Japan, where they could turn out to come in handy on a daily basis...

      Driving in Japanese urban ares isnt like driving in Sydney, its busy & tight! Many streets have no names ! You'll need a Navi.

    wow... thats fairly interesting... if hes driving stick, hes got pretty good control. That said, he did place some indicators like the stone blocks along the wall that tell him if he can't go back anymore. Could be simplified with just a Smart car though.

      Yeah I noticed those blocks too. I thought that he put them there so he knows that when he bumps into them to stop reversing. Those blue things on the wall look like some sort of cushions as well, just in case he actually hits the wall.

      Still, that's some pretty amazing parallel parking. I wish I was that good at that type of parking.

      Yeah, the indicators and padding seem to be insurance and guides. Don't think it's stick though - if you watch the part of the video where it's in-car, I don't see him shifting.

        Actually, you see that he does shift... except since its from drive to reverse, its not sufficient to tell whether it is automatic or stick. I just get the feeling its stick because you see certain segments where the car movement jerks bit by bit. If it were automatic, he could just release on the brake and have the car roll. The thing is... I believe you can get the same results with a manual. Just much harder because releasing too much will result in stalling. Thats why I think he overshot it just a bit to prevent it from stalling... or maybe he isn't as delicate as I thought he is.

    Using a navigational system is not that necessary in Hong Kong; I tend to have to be more wary of the road situation than where I am going - all those lane cutting, junctions, and ruthless taxis etc made by naive driving experience all roughed up.

    Don't generally need a GPS nagication device here as I know all the streets. Google-maps is good enough if I have to go to places I don't know. My parents own one but they only use it when they travel outside the USA or to the East Coast where they don't know the streets and their way around.

    I can't drive in Asia. Either they're really crazy drivers with no attention to rules or too small and crowded.

    In car navi are readily available in Los Angeles and in the US. However I used to be a former Paramedic Dispatcher in the Los Angeles area so I know the streets fairly well and am great at reading and remembering maps so I never relied on any sort of in car navigation system. That being said I do currently use my Blackberry and the Google Map program to check on the traffic condition of freeways before driving off though but don't use it for directions.

    By the way for anyone using Blackberry or similar PDA phones I highly recommend Google Map. You can see Street View + Satellite view, get live traffic reports on freeways, plan routes, get directions and its all 100% free if you have unlimited download plan. Meanwhile, the AT&T software charges $10 a month. Wouldn't recommend it over a dedicated navi system and its not convenient to use while driving (please pull over to use your phones :P) but it really does help out in a pinch.

    On the topic of bad parking, the worst area I've been in for parking so far has been San Francisco, probably changed to Seoul after my trip this summer hehe. Cars were parked right on the sidewalk and even diagonally on the corners of the intersection. Parking enforcement there must either have a field day giving out tickets or are extremely more lax then it is here in LA.

    A lot of people here would have difficulty maneuvering their cars into such "parking" spots. How I wanted a Smart ForTwo simply due to size considerations.

    As for car navigation systems, a brain and some logic beats electronics any day. Here in Toronto, the taxi drivers (including airport limo ones) are so reliant on the fancy GPS car navigation systems they TOTALLY forget to use their brains when customers tell them to go to places that their GPS-navs don't show a location for. Last year, I had to tell the limo driver actual driving instructions to get to my apartment and ignore his GPS-nav.

    Considering how many people rely on these stuff to drive into ditches, over cliffs, and into narrow roads...

    I am using a GPS sometimes because I just started driving on my own and I don't know all the directions yet. The GPS isn't mine though ^^;

    He really has this parking space all marked out. I wonder how long it took him to find all the hazards. We have a Mitsubishi Colt in Japan and no scratches yet... *knock on wood* I have a hard time parking that darn thing when I drive it. ^^;

    Yes, we have nav. systems in both our Colt and Milan. I use the nav. system more when I'm in Japan than I do here in the states. Then again the nav. systems in japan are much better than the systems here in the states.

    Nice, but with power steering this maneuver is not that big of a deal. Imagine how would this guy's arms look like if he would do this everyday with a car without power steering!^^
    Car navigation? I still use the good old paper maps. Just last month me and my boss went to the other side of the country, and the guy who welcomed us asked if we had a hard time getting there. When we said no, he asked if we used a car navigation system, and he was pretty surprised when we said hell no, we used a paper map and common sense.^^ People are just too depending on modern technology nowadays.

    In car nav system.... nope, won't have it. I just can't stand the voices and they're pretty innacurate once you leave the cities anyway (they're pretty innacurate in town as well, at least for the Australian maps and directions). I'll stick with my maps and UBD for now. Besides, if you use a map then by the end of the trip you get a map covered in scrawl as a momento of your journey :D
