E Mobile is a telecommunications carrier in Japan who have been popular mainly due to the wireless network cards that they offer.
This is my new spanking D12HW USB data card which gives me wireless access speeds of up to 7.2Mbps. The red area on this map shows that pretty much all of Tokyo is covered and if you drag the map you can see which other areas of Japan have E Mobile access.

The SIM card has my details on it and when the USB is plugged into any laptop, an installer boots up automatically to install the drivers. From then on, each time you want to connect to the Internets, all you have to do is use the application thats provided.
I currently pay 6,700 yen per month to download as much as I want.

There is also a Mini SD Card slot in the data stick that takes up to 8GB.

They were running a promotion where folks who take out an E Mobile subscription (for two years) get the data stick for free and the Dell Mini 9 for 100 yen - 1 USD!

The Dell Mini 9 with OS X Leopard and the 7.2Mbps USB Data Card combination is a geeks dream machine!

Do you have high speed data card services in your neck of the woods too? I I heard there was some in the US from the My Dell Mini forums?

I am using Celcom's 3.6 Mbps package and the speed I am getting for dl is about 1500kbps and up is about 200-300kbps. And thats before I hit the cap. I mostly hit the cap in the first week itself and the speed reduces to about 30% >.< Never tried online gaming and I am using this in Langkawi. So I would say its pretty fast. Haven't tried it in my hometown yet though. >.<

Sounds like a gorgeous offer... I suppose they limit it to one per person?
Sigh. I'm still running on a pathetic 1Mbps line><;; Which reminds me, I used to think Mbps referred to megabytes... always wondered why my downloads were so slow despite that:p

We have something similar. Mobile network connections. Nearly all of the mobile companies are doing it now. Just stick a usb dongle with a sim card into the side of your pc and you have internet anywhere. Just like using your mobile phone/cellphone. That offer is so much better than ones we get here.
I really want to get one but I don't want a contract and I'd only be using it a few times when I'm not at my desktop pc.

Yep here in Australia the service has been available for quite a while, with one company basically running a monopoly on the service they charge like a wounded bull. Just looking at the plans, they have up to 8Mbps speed, and charge $399 just for the usb donggle/modem before even signing up for a plan.

being a cellular capital there all providers are offering the HSDPA. Though I only know two providers offering a similar service like danny's ^^;; and unfortunately, its not game-friendly nor does it cover the entire nation. Only the capital region D:

Though its very useful in school as I dont have to rely on working around proxy servers just to access YM (!!!) and torrents :P

yeah, we have that in singapore. that modem you have, should be made by Huawei. i'm using a 2Mbps plan for about 1000 to 1100 yen per month, roughly converted for unlimited traffic.

There's word that Apple's going to create a netbook or tablet that can run on 3G networks in America (and anywhere else they offer it that has a 3G infrastructure). There's also word that AT&T is gonna greatly subsidize them, making $99 with a two-year data plan contract which should be around $50 a month for unlimited (5GB gap most likely)

knowing the true cost price of the mini 9, as least in my region, I will reckon 30% of the total revenue the ISP gets is used to purchase the mini 9 of the end-users. If its bought in bulk, the percentage might shrink to around 17-20%

Just 7.2Mbps? That's not amazingly fast, but I guess it's not bad for the price you pay and the areas that you can use it in. The lack of a download limit sounds pretty nice too.

Danny, does your optical fiber line at home have a download limit?

Yeah, we have it too like somebody said before in Poland all mobile providers (four in total) offer mobile internet with a USB modem looking just like yours Danny (probably Chinese Huawei model). My brother has got one from provider called "Play" and he pays equivalent of about 1500 yen monthly so its looking pretty cheap compared to 6700 yen. Downsides are obvious - limited transfer per month - 5 GB as far as I remember.

The speed of mobile broadband is pretty good in the UK (7.2Mbit max I believe - does it go higher in Japan?), however the monthly data allowances are pathetic; the best you can expect is about 15GB, and any excess usage will be charged at something crazy like £10 per GB.

max speed here for home users would be 2 megabits capped with 1-5gb data transfer per month depending on the plan, on any type of connection - adsl or evdo (installation costs a bomb but uncapped). Ther are 8 - 16 mb plans for business users but cost around usd 400 - 600 per month :S

There was talk of two private companies coming out with 16 mb and 100 mb plans but both of them capped at 150-200gb per month of data transfer. totally useless imo.
All companies here use optic fiber and only want to fleece the consumers as much as possible before bringing out new plans.

6700 Yen/month seems rather a lot. Here I have a data package that's £7.50/month (~1000 Yen/month), but it's not unlimited - after 5GB/month it starts behing metered at an absurd rate. Never come close yet, though! Speed is 7.2Mbps HSPDA in city centers, tailing off to 3Mbps in the suburbs and then 1Mbps (or no coverage at all!) in rural areas.

It always amazes me that data costs so much in Japan, I was just as cheap roaming on my home SIM than renting a local one for the data prices!

Sprint has wimax where I live, it used to be relative cheap when it came out but the price is going up now that it merged with clearwire. It was a standard $30 for a month's worth of service now it says 30 bucks just the first 6 months, which indicates that it now requires a contract, before it was on a month to month basis. It also advertises a lower max speed of 4mbps.

The Dell Mini 9 can come with a GSM/GPRS device installed... or, if this high speed wireless provider's own protocol supporting device installed to the same WWAN slot complete with SIM card slot behind the battery. (If you have one of these now, you will notice that behind the battery, there is a slot where you can install a SIM card even if your system board doesn't have the WWAN slot present.) Failing such an option, I would be tempted to strip the USB device down, and install an internal USB hub so that there isn't an external USB device sticking out of the side waiting to be broken off accidentally. (see www.mydellmini.com for more details on how to do hacks like this and others such as installing Mac OS X)

getting more popularity in Indonesia, too bad the price is expensive.. 125 IDR (about 10.25 USD) for 256 kbps, the highest one is 3.6Mbps (don't ask the price please >_>). 7.2Mbps is still far far away.

I still use 128k EDGE GPRS when I connect the Internet with my cellphone but there're many WiFi hotspots around Bangkok that are 2 Mbps fast.
