A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Time passes so quickly. Before I know it, I will be 6 foot underground being eaten by earthworms, sprinkled in the ocean being swallowed by some sea snake or sitting in a jar sharing the remaining space with a lurking cockroach.

Want to make sure that I not only enjoy life while I still can but also contribute somehow to the lives of people who I care about - the people around me and you the reader.
My talk on death should be up soon together with a night time photo walk.

Starting off with comrades from Kotobukiya around to take photos of the office for the Otacool book. And yes I do wash that T-shirt ^^;

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

The weather has been a bit off but the clear blue sky hot sunny days are just gorgeous.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

At the Wonder Festival which was held in Makuhari for the first time. The report can be seen in the figure portal.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

The Tokyo Figure Show was my first figure show in collaboration with Good Smile Company. Was a great learning experience and am working on getting hold of a venue for TFS2.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

TFS was on for a week and we had two nights for networking events. The evening events were called TFS Night.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

And this was our gorgeous view of Tokyo with Shinjuku in the background.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

At TFS Night 2, Good Smile gave out a load of goodies and here you can see folks being unleashed on the Nendoroids.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

The only downer about the evening events was that they didn't allow us to bring in food.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

But they had free as-much-as-you-want alcoholic or soft drinks.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Daughters of Cut A News and GDR. More pics at Steve Nagata's Flickr Pool.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

My sweet Saber.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

And this is how I carry Saber out n about. Doesn't she have gorgeous green eyes?

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

No food at TFS Night so came home close to midnight to fill up with some peanut sandwiches from Seven Eleven. Don't usually eat at this time of night.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

This weeks office. In the mornings its usually cool enough to get by with the fan but requires the cooler for the rest of the afternoon.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

A Tony Taka shower poster sample from Kotobukiya.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Spend a lot of my time working with terminal windows. I love Aoi-chan's new sitting pose. She's sitting on some concrete-like polystyrene blocks that I got from Tokyo Hands. Would love to have this chair though.

Speaking of dolls, the Miss Dollfie Summer 2009 contest has been extended until the 17th of August. You can see all entries so far at figure.fm.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Didn't end up using the iMac for a server and will probably sell it.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Chris at the controls working on Puchi Blurbs for Mirai Gaia as we speak. That should be rolled out to figure.fm first. Follow him on Twitter.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Also need to get rid of some Mac Mini's too now that we are using cloud hosting.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Naruto still going strong. How many of you are into the series?

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Unisex brolleys. Hmmmm. Would love to have one for my daughters. Something like this.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Puchi Kyoka can eat a whole piece of sushi.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

We now have PG Tips imported into Japan! 598 yen for a box of 40 bags. Nice to see the monkeys still in the ads back in the UK.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Would usually wear the trooper helmet when picking up folks by bicycle.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Hmmm. Nice car.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Dont know much about Ferraris but like this bit. Is that where the missiles are loaded?

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Lovely evening in Tokyo.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Riding around on the bicycle in the evenings with a warm breeze through the balding hair is most pleasing.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Yet another temple discovered nearby.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Watching my fave business and trends program Gaia no Yoake. This week they talk about how lighting and color affects consumers buying patterns in retail stores.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Here they are trying out different lights showing how food looks different according to the light being used.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

There has been previous coverage about lighting in Japanese stores too and how bright lighting increases users tendency to pick up and buy. This is one of the reasons why you may have noticed that many Japanese food stores and pharmacies are brightly lit.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Tomato mince burger at Matsuya.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Vegetable Yuba rolls.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Some cheesy fried ball thingy.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Grew up on potatoes back in the UK and love em.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Katsu filled with something or other.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

In the middle of my morning duties - polishing n dusting.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

In the middle of dusting down the shelves on the second floor.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Some Mr Donuts for an after lunch snack.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

If you eat a load of Mr Donuts and are still alive after all the sugar then you can spend your points on some goodies. My fave is Pon de Ring.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Puchi construction vehicle.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Kyoka eats sushi for lunch too.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

So far we have seen collaboration portals with Kotobukiya (Otacool) and Good Smile (TFS) and this month I look forward to announcing yet another collaboration with a huge maker.

If you want to be close to the figure makers and get your work noticed by them then figure.fm is probably a good place to start posting stuff ^o^

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

On a hot Saturday afternoon, there is nothing better than a cold salad to cool off.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Evening dinner in Gotanda.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

PG tips seems to be getting more popular.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

A cockroach ran across the table before this dish arrived ^^;

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

If you get served a dish that looks like this, pour the red sauce in the bowl with the red spice and veggies. Then dip the udon noodles in the sauce.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Richard Gere stars in the movie showing now called Hachi.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

The Yamanote Pokemon train. I chuckled when I heard my younger sister pronounce Pokemon as "Pohkeemon" ^^;

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Spend a lot of the past week at Harajuku but kept forgetting to go to the Tenshi no Sumika Dollfie store.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

More construction work nearby.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Having some lunch at the local Omusubi store.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

"Omusubi" was apparently the feminine word for "Onigiri" which are rice balls with a filling. The balls are shaped in a triangle and wrapped in seaweed. Today I split the tea on the floor ^^; At least I didn't spill it *on* anybody like I did when I was working part time at a restaurant. Have you had any embarrassing moments in a restaurant?

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

MMMM! Taiyaki. These are baked pastry with a filling - commonly red beans or custard. 150 yen.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Extremely heavy rain when I got to Harajuku station one day. Folks waited by the windows for the rain to die down.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Something for Miku fans. 158 yen each.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Trying out Pepsi Shiso flavor. Tastes like...shiso...
Apparently called Perilla which I didn't know until I done a google.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

More sushi for lunch.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Yakiniku at Matsuya. 650 yen.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Passing by the hair dyes. When I started learning Japanese, I was influenced by the idol magazines which I used to read at the time and dyed my hair brown for a few years.
You may notice that a large number of Japanese folks (especially girls) dye their hair brown too.

Don't think I can be bothered to do it again. I hear that dying ones hair is bad for the body.
Anybody here currently dye or dyed their hair before?

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

SMAP chooses Softbank. Tsuyoshi is back in action as you can see.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Taken this afternoon.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Eaten this afternoon.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Iron man has a new shield.

A Week in Tokyo 43 title=

Finishing off with some photos taken on the way to Makurari for the Wonfes - listening to Ridge Racer R4 as usual.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.

Seems like you're having a better summer as far as weather goes. Lots of sunny pictures, we've had a record amount of rain.

Love the Saber-Mirai doll, the clothes are cute and the oppai is just... @_@

I think it has something to do with El Nino plus that huge volcanic eruption in Russia in June. That made things colder, thus more rain. That's my guess. The Northwest have had a fantastic summer this year, very hot and not much rain. I thought that Washington state would be too rainy for me but maybe I ought move there. It would be British Columbia for you, the weather was similar to Washington state, too.

The volcano eruption I talked about can be seen here: http://blogs.discovery.com/earth/2009/06/russian-volcano-shocks-the-world.html

Always love to read about A Week in Tokyo, as I am closing in to my own trip to Japan in about a week, this will be great reference material for me!

Like the bag you have for Saber, as I just experienced bringing my daughters outside of their room, I need to find a better way to take them with me. So far I have enjoyed the luxury of being able to drive right up to where I can take photo but it won't be so easy again if I decided to take them to more remote area.

Looking forward to hearing about the next big collaboration!

        Well, I don't want my daughters to feel they are being cramped into a duffel bag though, so far they have been sitting in the passenger seat and get off the car like normal, I don't know how they will feel if I stuff a couple of them in a duffel bag >.<;

I have a big duffel, I keep Yumiko's wigs in one end pocket, her props in the other end pocket, and her clothes in a side pocket. I have a towel in the bottom to provide extra cushioning and wrap her in a baby blankie to protect her. I usually take off her wig and put it in with the rest of them while she's in transit. It's bulky but she's well protected.

If you think caring for a vinyl child is rough, try caring for a resin musume. The resin used in BJDs is resilient, but not as resilient as vinyl. This is why the boyfriend Yumiko-tan's been bugging me about is going to be vinyl too...Obitsu. Yeah, resin is gorgeous but I would have to give the future boy the name "Chip" if you know what I mean.

However, if Volks put out a DD boy...I'd grab that in a second and forget Obitsu.

That must of been a fun week. Saber does have pretty eyes and that white Ferrari was awesome. I had some highlights in my hair before. Then I dyed my hair dark brown to get rid of them. Eventually, my hair grew out and got rid of the dark brown hair in order for my black hair.

:sniffle: Just watching the trailer for 'Hachi' made me well up... even tho I'm a bit annoyed they decided to set it in the US.... the story's still sad though... :sob: Richard Gere sounds weird saying "Hachi" though... not sure why...

TAIYAKI!!!! Me want!!! I'm pondering over the idea of getting the fish-shaped frying pan to make em in, since it is just pancake mix with a filling, not *that* hard to do at home lol. I even saw a set you can put in the microwave lol.

TFS looked like a classy do, no food+lots of alcohol is not a good mix... considering all those fragile figures strewn about the place... imagine the accident if some people got too drunk...

And much as I love Japan, I am never gonna eat fish eggs... they look pretty sure, but they're fish eggs....:shudder:

Tis good they started importing PG Tips though lol. And very pretty parasol/umbrella things too.

Now I wish I could read Japanese so I could read Gaia no Yoake's website! I'm always interested in lightning - it really does help sales, particularly if photographing something that is to be sold.

From my own personal observations, humans are quite like moths. It is especially noticeable during Maine Winters. When the nights are 14-16 hours long, gas stations (they also double as mini food stores here) with ultra bright lights do far more sales than their dimmer counterparts...

Used to dye my hair allot when I was younger but as I got older it became harder to get it to take so I have sense given it up. Our summer weather has been a little on the dry side but its been fairly hot and humid which has made for a pest issue and the spiders are loving it. Until this past April I lived just outside of Metro Atlanta in a suburb town called Athens and our first full summer there was miserable due to a long heat wave and a severe drought where it rained 3 days during the entire summer months. Now I live further north and east in Virginia Beach but due to the proximity to the Atlantic ocean and the northerly flow of the gulf stream that heads up from the gulf of Mexico towards England it tends to be warmer and muggier here for a greater length of time comparable to where I used to live.

Dyeing your hair is actually bad, but in your case it definetly will make em dryer every-time.

    I've never died my hair before but have had some color hair spray on once for one day. ^^;

    The right kind of lighting really does help the aesthetic appeal of certain foods. The other day, I accidentally used the flash on my camera when taking a picture of my meal. It looked very gross. ^^;

A talk on death delivered by you? It would make for extremely interesting reading - and a lot of responses :) I am looking forward to it!

image 27689 - it's like the *grabby* emoticon come to life! *giggles*

image 27695 - and THAT, folks, is Danny demonstrating a real-life *nomnomnom* :)

image 27704 - the sushi's BIGGER than Puchi Kyoka :)

image 27715 - tomato mince burger? is the egg that goes with it poached, over easy, soft-boiled, or what? I wonder if I could duplicate it for my partner....

image 27730 - cockroach? >.< if that had happened to me, I would have called for the manager stat! and quite possibly walked out in a huff after speakingh to him/her...I follow Anthony Bourdain's advice: they let you see the tables and the water closet, and if neither of those are really clean, better not order at all......

image 27737 - yummy food. we try not to have embarrassing moments but we can't help but *facepalm* when other people forget etiquette. too many meals shared with people who CUT their pasta or noodles - it makes me and my partner wince.

image 27744 - I have dark-brown hair, and I used to have blonde streaks in it. it's been a few years since that so now my hair is all back to its normal color, and I am thinking of having dark red streaks put in.

I think one just needs to know how to care for one's hair when it's in that condition, and that will lessen any harm that the dyes could do to the scalp/hair strands/roots.

(my hair took to getting colored just fine. no long-term negative effects on my head.)

Those umbrellas are so cute! It's hard finding nice or cute ones over here. They're all tartan or black.

The Pon de Ring plushie looks absolutely adorable too. Who wouldn't like a lion with a doughnut for a mane?

*raises hand for the question about hair dying* To purple and red. I have really dark hair, so there isn't much I can dye it without lightening it. But I take good care of my hair and it doesn't seem to have suffered any ill effects.
(I really want to doing something interesting next with it, like bleaching the underside and dying it a wicked purple or red.)

No! don't dye your hair blue! well if you go to a hair salon then it's ok, but don't do it by yourself. Black-haired people have to bleach their hair ash blond and that damages it like crazy, you can also end up with a green color since it's hard to get black hair to an almost white state and the colors end up mixing. I'd suggest dyeing locks of hair with a pro if you really want to, but personally the damage the bleaching does is not worth the color. (yeah I was foolish enough to do it myself, I did like both the blue and green but the hair gets tortured too much).

Look likes you are having a good summer there and will be great if you use this chance to captures plenty of pictures through out Japan.

Never dye my hair before and will never want to because it's hectic when maintaining it. Haha!! You spit on a customer when you are working as a part timer? That got to be embarrassing even to me but when I think about myself I can't really think of any situation.

Excellent pictures, as usual. I wish I could get anything even resembling that quality with my camera. But I suppose the problem isn't the camera, but rather the one holding it =)

As for the restaurant, Don't think I have ever spilled anything on people. But sometimes, we give tours of the back to our regulars. It's not like we have anything to hide, so whatever. But back when I was working dish, the boss is showing around a customer. Me being sleep deprived, I drop a rack of dirty glasses right as he comes in, sending glass and remnants of alcoholic drinks everywhere. Was rather embarrassing.

Restaurants here don't have that kind of awesome service. I'm jealous.

I dyed my hair once and will NEVER do so again. I found out the hard way that my hair looks olive green against red, that it grows so fast that my roots will show after only a week, and that my hair absorbs dye extremely well. >.< I had to pay $80 to get highlights put in so my roots weren't so obvious, and had to go around with three-toned hair for several months even though I had used a temporary dye. It's just NOT worth the trouble.

You ask if I ever dyed my hair before. The answer is yes. I actually went to a hairdresser and told her "I want my hair as blonde as you can make it." Arriving home to my apartment that I shared with several other otaku, I showed it off and they immediately started laughing! When I asked why they pointed behind me: Someone had put up a Dragonball Z wall hanging up while I was away, and my hair was Super Seiyan yellow! To this day I don't know whether that was embarrassing or awesome.

working at a food place was the worst job I ever had. Of all the things I've worked at I really feel like food was at the bottom. You have to be careful because it is stuff people eat, you have to be careful because it is really hot, but you have to be quick because people don't like waiting. It's not the pressure that bothered me but handling food itself, I just don't like touching people's food.

You eat out a lot Danny and your pics of food always makes me hungry...
I do dye my hair very often coz I'm a girl.^^
Started dying right after high school coz we were not allowed to do so in school. My original hair color is very dark. So I usually dye it a lighter shade of reddish brown. Then a while back, went back to my roots and started to dye it with very intense black. Just got it done again recently.^^ Costs me about RM400(~USD114)usually. I also perm and straighten my hair at the salon a lot, depending on my moods. And I use the curling iron to style my hair before going out..which all leads to damaged hair, which in turn leads to hair treatments for the hair. Which means lots more RM spent. It's a horrible cycle ne.

I've done highlights before. It was fun and quite nice until the roots grew out and then it started to suck, lol. I wouldn't mind once in a while getting highlights but probably would never dye all of my hair a different color. A bit too much for me and I prefer the subtleties of highlights.

A friend of mine told me it was almost difficult to spot a girl in Japan with black hair several years ago. EVERY girl dyed their hair and she stood out like a sore thumb because she didn't. But it has since toned down.

Wow, that ITV Digital monkey is still around after I graduated from uni in UK years ago?

Second wow, Tsuyoshi's show-biz career is STILL alive after flashing his dolphin? I would have thought antics like these were potentially career-ending in the Japanese entertainment industry, which can be quite conservative. (The same cannot be said for Sakai Noriko, who was busted with drugs a few weeks back. )

When I was younger I dyed my hair purple then red then black then purple then blue. When my hair goes gray some day I will most likely use it as a excuse to do so again as I wont have to bleach out my hair, which I why I don't do it anymore.

I used to dye my hair but I've stopped a couple of years ago. It's bad for the hair, you can save a couple of bucks and well, I'm lazy and poor to go around buying beauty products =P I might dye locks of hair though, as long as you stay within some shades of your original color it's not that bad.

It's the reverse down here in Australia; it was a so-so winter, not as cold as previous ones IMHO (despite me STILL getting the human-type flu). Now we gotta look to a hot summer. I hate summer, so it's not on my favorite things to look forward to at end of year.

    Danny,
This is my first time posting comment here.
For a person, who loves Japan ever since he remembers, your site proves to be a virtual world for him.
The local life style and cuisines, it looks that I am living in Tokyo.
To suggest what might improve will be an insult to your work and to praise what a fantastic work you have engaged yourself into is simply below you so I would just thank you for creating this portal for me and likes of me.
I would request you to cover some pictures of suburbs of Tokyo, you know, how a typical quite residential area looks like, their streets and beauty. The best example, I can quote is something like in the anime of "Maision Ikokku".
    I hope you understand.
    Thank you for reading this.
    Regards,
    Hashmi

I started dying my hair at a fairly young age (13) and I still dye it. It has been almost every color, except for blue. I went dark brown for a year, then I just decided that I'd like to be a ginger. It's expensive, but it's fun for me. I've done some damage (mostly by bleaching it blonde) but it's pretty healthy right now. It's all in the shampoo and conditioner.

Always wondered how people transport their dolls, they seem incredibly fragile. I don't think i'd be able to cycle around Tokyo, too scared of crashing into someone ^^; Gaia no Yoake sounds like an interesting programme, though bright lights in a shopping centre does makes sense. Ha, the guy staring out the window of the train doesn't look happy at all. Those shots on the road are a great way to end, can't believe how empty the roads are though.

Neat I was on the bullet train going from tokyo to kyoto when that freak rain storm hit and broke our train. Then they put us and 3 other trains worth of passengers on one train for the rest of the ride. Was`nt very much fun having to stand up in the middle of the walk path for 2 hours, cause the train was not going very fast.
