Never heard of Forever 21 until they opened their first retail store in Japan right next to their rivals H&M. T'was in the news for quite a bit as the ladies went into a frenzy for some coolsome apparel.

Forever 21 Tokyo title=

Wifey is training up to blog for our fashion portal which should be out before the end of year. While I chose to walk the path of the Internets, I still do have an interest in fashion and have quite a few connections in the fashion biz in Tokyo who are interested in working together on the site.

Forever 21 Tokyo title=

Wifey is into fashion, accessories and zakka and likes to check out the latest and greatest in these areas. She went along to the opening of Forever 21 in Harajuku and came back with a few pics.

The first couple of photos of the queue taken just outside the Softbank Store - which is a long way from Forever 21. A news report below covers the opening.

Forever 21 Tokyo title=

They had security guards making sure that folks didn't get flattened by the occasional steamroller.

Forever 21 Tokyo title=

The GAP sign in sight - nearly there.

Forever 21 Tokyo title=

A look behind to see a long trail of ladies still queuing up.

Forever 21 Tokyo title=

A Forever 21 branded bus drives around the area. You will commonly see this type of marketing in Shibuya, Harajuku and Roppongi.

Forever 21 Tokyo title=

Forever 21 in sight - just a wee bit longer to go.

Forever 21 Tokyo title=

I notice that they usually have a few Mr Smiths with ear pieces at the front - maybe its to give a certain air of exclusivity?

Forever 21 Tokyo title=

Inside the store packed with ladies looking for some loot.

Forever 21 Tokyo title=

The store seems to open until quite late. Was at the H&M store for TFS and saw Forever 21 open at about 9PM.

Wifey mentioned that there was a sweaty elderly man going through the pantsu...

Forever 21 Tokyo title=

Its like a Wonder Festival for ladies ^^; Men who go along with their partner should probably keep their hands in the air.

Forever 21 Tokyo title=

A peek out the window to see that there is still a queue of folks wanting to get in.

Forever 21 Tokyo title=

Question for men - do you go in with your partner to shop for clothes or sit outside and poke about on your mobile?

I usually go in and help pick out stuff.

Forever 21 Tokyo title=

Another question for men - have your purchased any clothes for your partner before?
When I was on a business trip in Seattle, I was shopping for some really cute tops for wifey. I didn't know her trouser size at the time so all I could do was to try them on myself! Not at the shop though - bought them back to the hotel. Was laughing at myself all afternoon.

Forever 21 Tokyo title=

Would love a whole store like this filled with Dollfie clothes ^^

Forever 21 Tokyo title=

Do they have Forever 21 in your neck of the woods? I saw some comments as to how Forever 21 is just another fashion retail store and that they was surprised to see the queues. I also saw some comments of how stores like Muji and Uniqlo get queues like these outside of Japan - if you have any photos then would love to see some.

Forever 21 Tokyo title=

Wifey is done at Forever 21 and comes back out to see folks still queuing up to get in.

Forever 21 Tokyo title=

And on her way back to Harajuku station. Folks who want to get to Forever 21 can do so by getting off at JR Harajuku or Meiji Jingu Mae.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

This item was posted in the Japan category. You can see more of everything else or subscribe via RSS instead.

anyways, Lol at "Wifey mentioned that there was a sweaty elderly man going through the pantsu..."
Don't know what to say to that.

And I love looking at clothes myself. I'm in a small town, and so most of the people my age all dress the same, so I shop online and go to Toronto or Ottawa to shop. H&M is one of my favorite stores. I don't mind throwing down money on clothes at all.

In Singapore, Forever 21 has outlived its hype and is really just another stall. The opening of Uniqlo a few months back had queues so long that they had to limit people coming in. It has subsided now though

I think I spent an hour just to queue to get into the dressing room.
Spent a total of 2 hrs shopping inside.

The styles are still quite different if you look at them. Forever 21 is closer to H&M and Wet Seal in style. Both are relatively affordable and go more for a bohemian/neo-grunge look to them.

I didn't realize there was much of a difference either. Only thing I know is that Hollister is basically a surfer wannabe style.

I rarely go to Forever 21 since I'm a guy and although the one in Pasadena, CA does have a guy section, it's really small. Only thing I've ever bought in a Forever 21 were a pair of aviator sunglasses when I was waiting for someone.

Giordano finally open shop here but fashion displayed there is... hmm I dunno, not as much variety as in asia unfortunately?

There are Forever 21's here, but I've never heard them being that popular. Just another casual clothing store for women. Line up for stores don't usually happen unless it's a never been here before, and after a weeks time it is normal in and out. Last time that happen was H&M.

I do usually go in with the girl when she's shopping as she values my opinion. I don't usually buy stuff for her without her unless it's a special occasion. I've been told I have great fashion sense, and a good eye for aesthetics in general.

I, myself am admittedly am sorta a fashion whore & elitist. I tend to buy expensive European names and such. Which I've tried to cut down on since attending courses. However, I know the fashion style in Asia varies alot from here as N.America tends to follow European trends.

Is that considered late in Japan? That seems to be about the norm here in the States.

Not too into the quality of Forever 21 clothing (seems to fall apart once you set it in a washer), but occasionally they'll have something worthwhile.

I remember Forever 21 was the thing when I was in middle school--like 7, 8 years ago. (Now I feel kind of old. ;_;) I don't really dig their stuff though. It's just like any other store, so if I liked any of that stuff I could go down to a department store and get it for a fraction of the price. And I don't like most of what they carry anyway. I prefer stuff that's more tailored, and, quite frankly, more moesome and less angular-fashontista.

Wait, what? I thought the Abercrombie owner was totally anti-Asian (and anti-notwhite in general). There was an interview posted somewhere in which he said he only made clothing for hot people he liked, and that only included white people.

Augh, the thought of them charging triple in Japan horrifies me. They're already overpriced as it is now for the quality they give... but them's the breaks, I suppose.

Sure! I used to go with her to do some clothes shopping. I like to give input and see the different kinds of blouses she tries and whatnot. I could have bought stuff for her but she is REALLY picky. I know her size cause she always wore my Tee shirts.....After most of my shirts didn't "fit" right in the chest I asked, she replied with an energetic smile "I wear them all the time when I'm not at work". I thought she was wearing hers.^^;; But that's how it was and loved her for it.

Dang, that's crazy. I never knew the store had such a huge following outside the U.S. I personally don't like shopping there because it's a bit girly for my taste. I'd go for the shirt and jeans combo any day.

Most guys that I know just wait outside the store while their ladyfriends (or whatever) do their business inside the store... unless it's a store that caters to both men and women (Old Navy, Aeropostale... etc). Then men will usually look around for stuff that they like.

No Forever 21 around my part of the woods, well atleast that I know of. Some sort of trendy clothes shop, the Japan store is rather large and those guards at the doors does make it seem exclusive. I've never seen a queue for any store around here, well atleast for clothes.
With that many people instore, it must be hellish just looking at those images of people shoulder to should is scary.
This article, rather than paying attention to the interior of the store, I was doing a little bird watching.
Very interesting article indeed though, different to every other one that you do. I want to see more of these, general Japan photo articles.

I'm looking forward to the fashion portal! I love fashion and cute clothes... but I myself dress so frumpy... I have a hard time being feminine because I grew up around boys and became a tomboy... so I feel out of place or weird when I do wear cute clothes. I'm also a cheap ass and usually use my money towards figures and anime. All in all I feel like a lost cause on being a girl.

I've been in a Forever 21 but I felt the clothes were too expensive for the quality. But then I feel a lot of clothes now days are too expensive and not even unique.

I think there is a forever 21 in every mall around here within driving distance. They are not as crowded as the one in the article, but I consider them crowded compared to the other stores in the mall. Usually have good prices too, so I like it.

As for me, I usually go in just to help my sister and mom carry their merchandise. I never really buy clothes with my family since they mostly go to stores that specialize in women products. -_-'

I go with my partner to shop for clothes (both for her and mine) all the time.

I think it's interesting to find out about each other's taste and what she likes and her preferences. Most of my guy friends find this part of their relationship boring and refuse to participate.

My partner doesn't shop much though, mostly because the sizes here in Australia aren't her fit. I'm sure she'll be a bit more of a shopaholic when we go to stores like Forever 21 or go anywhere in asia for shopping! hehehe :)

Having a fashion portal here would be pretty cool. Looking forward to seeing more coverage.

Hi Danny, there is a big Forever21 store at Queensbay Mall in Penang and it is almost always empty so you can bring your wifey there the next time you guys visit Penang. Also, they always have sales esp on the accessories. The price tags show a discounted price and then the price gets slashed even further at the cashier counter. It's awesome! :D

Personally, I feel H&M is more similar to MNG(Mango), while Forever21 is similar to Topshop(British brand). We have MNG, Forever21 & Topshop in Penang and even though the quality of those brands are not that great, I always end up buying loads of those clothes!

Wow...now that's a line. Had no idea it was such a popular store. Maybe it's just that "something new" feel? Here it's rather common. Their clothes are ok, although I don't consider them particularly special (but I know some people who love the store)...then again, I'm not the person to ask for fashion advice...I wear what I like, which I'd venture to say more often than not is not really in fashion. I wouldn't even know what's popular anymore. Plus I wear all black with either jeans or my favorite long skirt on 90 degree days...not the most intelligent fashion choice. Jeans are the best invention ever...dunno why some people consider them uncomfortable.

However, my coats are my favorite. My one long duster-ish coat with the lacing in the back...oh heck yeah. But I'd die of heat stroke if I wore that now...Ok off topic now...

Is it bad that I'd still much prefer going to WF? Ah well.

There's a Forever 21 in the closest mall in my house. Never been inside it but I've seen it. I don't think there's ever been huge lines there though... Didn't know it was such a big thing in Japan ^^" Well for now... I'm sure the lines are just a result of the "new store" effect where everyone wants to go check it out when it first opens.

Forever 21 does all well with business here, but I'm not sure people realize it actually was supposed to sell affordable knockoffs of current runway trends. It's not a big brand though. The local places like Bench and Folded and Hung get more crowds (partly because they cater to both genders).

My partner and I like to look at clothes and occasionally buy them for each other. I also buy him accessories like hankies from time to time.

I'd like to read your wife's fashion blog when it gets online. :)

Also, Danny, were you considering putting on a more fashion-type post here or elsewhere? Like for dollfies and for real-world shoes?

my wife tells me there's a forever 21 here in Manila, but it's not the same shop. the owner must have anticipated and registered the business name locally to ride on the original shop's popularity. there's a number of businesses here that does that. there was a burger joint called the big mak here once, up until Mcdees sued them.
about shopping, yes I usually go and shop with her. but sometimes she would ask me to go away and check out a nearby toy or hobbyshop. ^^; the last piece of clothing I remember buying for her all by myself was a Zara top. ^^

Maybe people who aren't that interested in shopping for female clothes think of Forever 21 as just another store, but the truth is they are quite popular, and they have been around for quite some time. The thing is that they have very cute clothes at very reasonable prices; I have been to a lot of stores looking more or less like a F21 and some sell you a top for three times the amount in a F21 store.

Of course since there are clothing stores just about everywhere it's not the only cute cheap store out there, but hey women like it, it's inside malls (where crap can be more expensive outside a Macy's) where chicks can hang out together, so it works for what it is.

If you got it flaunt it! looks like these ladies are well into looking good. Forever 21 is considered a younger, for teens, early twenties store in the U.S., and quality is average. I used to work for a higher quality store that had Italian and European made clothes but the prices were ridiculous! It was like "Hi miss how can I convince you to buy this $200 sweater?" I myself like arts and crafts, and DIY stuff that you find at art fairs, concerts, and flea markets. Oh and knee socks...love knee socks.

There is a Forever21 store in my neck of the woods but never have a huge line to wait in front of it. I mean, seriously. If you have to wait for 3 hours, then why not going into another fashion store? They have clothes too. And the store you have to wait for isn't going to close forever after closing time. o_O I just don't get it.

I would go in and help choosing clothes. Since then she can buy what I like :P

And wtf at the pervy man.

Don't think we get Forever 21 here... Looks like it caters similar to the Universal store and whatnot though?

    Me and my ex had similar taste in clothes, so we used to wander around picking out stuff for each other. Unfortunately (fortunately?) the stores I go to aren't the sort likely to get a huge lineup outside (ok, maybe Herringbone). My wardrobe tends to be a weird mix of good quality new stuff and hand-me-downs/second hand ^^;

Looking forward to the fashion portal.

    Forever 21 isn't that big of a deal in my neck of the woods. I've bought a few cute articles of clothing, but nothing to get really excited about. We don't have one in my city, but the mall in the next city over is about to get one. I really hope the opening doesn't have lines like this one ^^;

Never heard of Forever21 - there could be a store ten minutes from my house and I wouldn't know about it. >_>

I usually walk in with whatever lady friend I'm accompanying - to just stay outside seems rude to me, and I rather like watching them look for clothes. Call me sappy, but I think it's good to and least try and understand what they're doing.

I usually just end up as the clothes hanger though. ^^; My fashion sense is rather...narrow.

There's a Forever 21 right across from Dundas Square and the Eaton's Centre - the only one in Toronto as far as I know. It's fairly large and usually busy. Doesn't have the same selection and styles as the US stores do, I've only been in twice and both times I was disappointed with the pricing and the stuff.

My waifu often goes into Forever 21 when she is here in the states. I know she buys gifts for friends and colleagues at home. It is always nice to have something that very few others will have in Japan. I would like to see this store. From the photos it looks as if there is a larger selections of styles that Forever 21 here in the states. Then again, fashion in this part of the states...

With my art and photography background I too pay attention to fashion. Yes, I always go into shops with my waifu and often make suggestions when she is shopping. She values my opinion and tells me I know here style. ^o^ I often buy clothing as gift. I had a few funny episode too before I had all of her sizes. It's all on my iPod now... ^^

I'm sure my waifu will visit the fashion portal once it is up. Right now she is adjusting to life in the states only...

Yeah, Forever 21 is sort of the average retail store here. Sadly we don't have an H&M in Hawaii however I went to the one in NY and liked it. Stores like those don't seem as crazy, though. XD Hell, only lines like that happened when Target opened up... lol.

Not really up in fashion though I always hear about it from my co-workers who say I should go there except I've never stepped into a Forever 21 store yet, lol. I hate clothes shopping anyway.

I rarely buy anything over $30au, but I still get compliments on what I'm wearing and comments on how some items look a lot more expensive hehe~

I love fashion and do look at more expensive labels, but I haven't been earning enough to actually buy anything,. Recently, I've been thinking of starting to set aside some funds to buy some more expensive key pieces, as I feel my style is maturing and can justify the investment.

    As for guys and shopping, my 2 close guy friends like to look good and it's generally the case that they drag 'me' in the store, ask my opinion, and then sometimes suggest some items for me to try xD;;

HOLY CRAP, LOL, this comes as a shocker for me because here in NYC, while Forever 21 and H&M are quite popular I don't like shopping there. It's not entirely the crowds that turn me off but the quality of the clothing. It just seems so poorly made... I am a girl and I can say that Forever 21 is tailored to those who want to look slightly expensive without spending as much as department stores. The quality of the clothes aren't that great but they're decently priced here in the States (well in CA it seems fine anyway). It's not my type of clothes though.

But it is surprising to see queues across the Pacific... there are never any lines for clothing stores here (at least where I am)

I go to Forever 21 quite often, the mens section that is haha. i really like the way their stuff fits me, their graphic-t's and of course their prices, although the quality is quite bad sometimes. But here its not really that big a deal. Many other stores around here.

We don't have a Forever 21 yet nearby, but a furniture store at my local mall got closed down recently in a hurry. They were having a complete store closing sale and had to close within a couple of days because Forever 21 wanted them out. Its a decent sized store and I believe Forever 21 wanted to be all moved in before school started here.

I only go to F21 if I need to dress snazzy for an event and need something really quick. They do have some cute dresses and tops for going out to nice functions, but I only shop there for just that.

Lately, their quality in clothing has declined, too. They've upgraded their stores in the past couple of years, but it's so hard to find exactly what I want, even though they have so many things to choose from. I'm too picky, lol.

They have a men's section, too! Kind of hard to find stuff for the boyfriend there, though :x Still much prefer online shopping and other boutiques to get my things.

Sadly, in Singapore, brands are so redundant everywhere you go.. the malls are different but the shops are alllll the same. I suppose this is common in many countries. Thankfully, we still have a street called Haji Lane, where the stores are selective about what they bring in.

The default brands that appeal to the younger folks over here are Forever 21, Topshop, Pull & Bear etc, so you can't help but notice that everyone looks pretty much the same. I mainly shop online for better stuff from Korea cos it's more value for money and they cover the latest cuts from Japan. I frequent flea markets once a while.

Fashion out of Japan is seriously dated. Yet, the lack of selection is no excuse.. It's really the individual's effort to dress up that's lacking.

Proof of this is Japan's street style, which has to be the epitome of fashion, cos it's so personal. A lot of Japanese CHOOSE to dress well.

I've a list of sites you guys might find useful as reference:
    http://blog.poperror.com/?p=161

Pardon my essay.. I just feel very strongly about this topic :D Back to the questions.. I help pick my gf's clothes and vice versa. I still remember, I spotted this pair of cute Jan Jansen (http://poperror.com/blog/P1000027.JPG) when my gf was out of town. So with the help of a measuring tape and another friend's feet I picked the size ^^ You can't rely on conversion charts when it comes to EU/JP shoe sizes.. (Tricky cos my gf is from Jp and they measure by cm). It was a very yata moment when it fitted perfectly!

P/S: Uniqlo is way overhyped.. but their skinny jeans and boxers are great buys. That's about it. So much for mind blowing online campaigns :P

No it doesn't go that way people live on a certain budget and forever 21 just has clothes that are in peoples price range.

OMFG Why didn't I see this news article before???

Forever 21 is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE store out there atm!!! (Sorry about the caps but it's sooo true!!) *fangasm* I actually had my foreign exchange student buy tons of stuff from that Forever 21 before she arrived here, and we'd exchange clothes, lol.

I go there every other day.. >.> *am a big fan*
The one in Tokyo is a bit expensive, but that's natural for that big of a city. They recently opened one up by where I live and every other thing I own is from there atm. I can't live without that place..

Yes, some of the clothes are lower in quality. However, the styles are great and the prices are actually really nice, if you know how to shop in the right sections. I understand that a lot of people dislike it. But people dislike tons of things... and I'm sure that no one dislikes good prices for the most part.

    And LOL @ their tiny boy's section. Did you ever see a boy's section there Danny? (It should be like hidden in a tiny corner lol) ^^;
