Shopping in Tokyo title=

Collection of photos - some from a few months ago and some from yesterday. Taking a look at daily shopping in Tokyo.
First up is Shinjuku. Particularly strong with department stores and electronic outlets. Lots of food and apparel too. If you are looking for figures then check out the Sakuraya Hobby Kan near CitiBank East Exit. They also have Kinokuniya with a foreign books section although I do recommend Amazon Japan for really cheap English language books.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Some character toothbrushes at a chemist. Included are Kamen Rider and Puricure.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Pokemon Soy sauce instant noodles - folks here are taught to eat it from an early age ^^;

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Folks who care about their health can find lots of material in many book stores. Hmmmm. Cream...

Shopping in Tokyo title=

At the Nike store looking for some trainers.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

I'll never forget the visit to this store. The sofa we sat on was bouncy. When I sat down, My Canon SLR that was on the other side of the sofa bounced in the air and landed lens first on the floor! Luckily the sigma had a lens cap. Was a bit dented but no permanent damage.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

The girls in the corner started to giggle when I went over to take pics of their apple pies.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

And after walking around shopping, its time to treat the stomach to some traditional Japanese food.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

At the shopping complex Lazona. Customers are greeted with the do-not rules.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

At the electronics store Bic Camera.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Huge TV screens. These are going for over 1,000,000 yen but you can negotiate on the price - especially if you have a print out of an online store that has a cheaper price.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Ryan has a tough time deciding exactly how much of the store he wants to take back to the US ^^;
Know exactly how he felt though. As a visitor to Japan many moons ago, it pained me that I could only take back a certain amount and was envious of folks who lived here who could get the stuff anytime.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Figma galore.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Konami's Busou Shinki series which I never got into. Nice designs but don't really like the shiny plastic.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

A load of Macross Frontier Itasha model cars.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Some Tutukki Bako by Bandai - a clock with a hole in the side - stick your finger in the hole and have hours of fun poking things.
Eemma gives us a review below. If you are interested then Japan Trend Shop has them on sale and ships internationally from Japan at 51 USD.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Some Japanese traditional mascots - the Daruma and Maneki Neko. They bob from side to side forever until our Sun burns out.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

How about starting your day by shooting at something? No I'm not talking about health care but about this product called Gun O'clock that will wake you up at your desired time - you have to shoot at the target to turn it off! Great PV Video below. Also available from Japan Trend Shop for 66 USD. Berry SUKIRI!

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Tamagocchi lives! I remember owning one of these back in the UK. Paid something like 20 pounds for it - and this was like 16 years ago.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Some kids playing with the toys out on display.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Walking around Lazona.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Not particularly keen on the choice of casual shoes over here and end up buying a few when I'm overseas in the UK or US - love the shoes at Aldo which we don't have here ToT.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Kaldi is having a sale this week - everything 10% off with many items at 50% off.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

I take advantage of the sale and pick up more than the usual - walnuts, Jalapeno and Chai Tea.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

A quick bite to eat before continuing shopping.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

These days, I hardly spend any moolah on my hobbies as samples just turn up - whether I like the items or not ^^;

For most of the shopping that I do do however, I get online - mainly from Amazon. Picked up two more Slick Cases for my daughters - 2,496 yen each.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

One of the most interesting products I've seen - a small tank where a Kabuto Prawn will grow just by adding water.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Here are the instructions on the back and here is a photo of what it looks like after a month! The egg thats included in the set hatches after 1 to 3 days. Anybody interested in owning one?

Shopping in Tokyo title=

The Dyson hoovers have gotten really small - saw the commercials for these and thought "I want one." I do a lot of hoovering and a smaller Dyson would have been nice as the big one is getting annoying now. The commercials show some chap holding the Dyson in his hand like this photo - but the one on display does not have a motor in it.

I looked on the floor where there was a working one and despite being smaller than the standard Dyson, it was just as heavy!

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Lately, there have been many washing machines being produced that are western style with the drum spinning on the horizontal axis - door on the side of the machine...

Shopping in Tokyo title=

...But traditionally have mainly been like the three on the left of the photo with the drum spinning on the vertical axis. The western style ones make more sense for machines that also dry the clothes too as garnments can tumble around.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Example of a Hitachi fridge.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

The fridges these days come with features such as instant freezing - you can stick a hot dish in the freezer compartment and it will instantly freeze it for you. Not sure how "instant" it is though.
Speaking of fridge - how about the one below? I think shes comes with the fridge.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Picking up some drinks. Love Milo - drunk it a lot as a kid when visiting Malaysia.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Frankfurter galore.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Here is a tip to get cheap food in Japan. Find out what time your local supermarket closes and go 20 mins before closing time. You will see stickers like these stuck onto mainly fressh food stuff that need to be sold on that day.
These ones are 20% off but some are discounted for more and if you wait for longer then sometimes they discount the food even more - but you risk not being able to get it because there are others lurking around waiting to nab the best deals.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

In the UK and US we had huge trolleys to push around groceries. While you can find large trolleys at places like Costco, most supermarkets will have mini trolleys to push around the narrow lanes.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

In order to gain the trust in consumers, many food stuffs like vegetables have photos of the farmer (with family in some cases) next to the produce.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Yukijirushi is a dairy brand in Japan. Many years ago, they got into a bit of bother with a few of their tanks containing rotten milk or something that they sold to consumers. As you can imagine, this hit their business really hard. In an attempt to clean up their image, they launched a brand called MegMilk which had a young cool image and tasted rather nice. While it did have the Yukijirushi logo printed in a small corner, many people didn't know it was made by Yukijirushi.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Ham galore. Back in London, they sold packs which had something like 30 slices at Sainsburys and Tescos for a couple of pounds. The best they can manage here is a pack of about 15 slices for twice the price.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Our shopping for the evening.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

While some places bag everything for you, most just place the groceries back in the baskets and one moves over to the packing tables where one can find rubber bands, string, tape and cloth to pack up.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Time to dash this lot into the fridge.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Our loot for the evening cost 5,385 yen. Still do the bulk of our shopping at Costco though.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Fridge need tidying ^^; This fridge has hinges on either side which means you can open it from both sides.

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Mum back in the UK wipes everything that she bought but we've just been sticking stuff straight into the fridge. Does your household wipe stuff before it gets refrigerated?

Shopping in Tokyo title=

Its not usually this messy ^^;

Shopping in Tokyo title=

After dindins its time for some Mango pudding.

That lady in the Fridge Ad - Is she wearing a dress or is that just baking paper and duct tape? :))

I'd be suspicious of any Dyson that's light weight. Dyson's are meant to feel solid.

Wow! Nice shoes they got there. My dad would have field day if he went to Japan XD

So stores there offer customers discounts if you hand them a print of the same product with a lower price on a website, huh? It seems that they know that their biggest threat nowadays are online stores. Good strategy~

Holy... look at all of those Figmas! Looking at them makes me want to toss them in the air :D

Now that's my ideal alarm clock! Waking up in the morning and the first thing you do is to shoot the thing. I just hope that, if I do get one, I grab the right gun! LOL XD

I would like to have a pet Kabuto prawn. Hmm... I wonder what it taste like?

That girl comes with the fridge? WOW SULIT!!! (WOW WHAT A BARGAIN!!!) XD

LOL what a way to build trust! Post the picture of the farmer who farmed these tomatoes so that, when you get poisoned, you know who to sue! XD

Meat here isn't that expensive, but with the whole credit crunch thing we've been mainly buying products that are out of date in a day or two, then freeze them. Cheap and last just as long.

It looks like, the symbol 2nd one from top second one down, says no cameras? Well, that's what i'm guessing from just the image though.
Growing your own Kabuto Prawn is something like Sea Monkeys? Imagine growing them together, haha.
At my place we have a top loader, with a dryer next to it. Though it does make sense to put those 2 together..
I do feel kind of jealous though, that within department stores there are just anime related goods lining the shelves, while over here you'll have to either find some specialist shops dotted around the city or order them from online.
It seems only supermarkets in asia have those mid levelled top-down cabinets with frozen goods in them. By putting those small signs of where the produce is from really does make the goods seem so much better, rather than coming from a faceless person you get to see whos produce you're eating. In Australia we have that kind of thing on my MacDonalds on the inside of the container.
I take along a green bag when shopping, helps reduction of plastic bags and reusable which is always good. It appears the haul contained mostly of liquids, I think I even see a pack of cans in the fridge. Though I suppose the fridge is mostly filled with non-base meal foods because you eat out so much.

Hmm... Sometime they are out of the city area. Costco stores are very large and carry everything from clothes, electronics and such like other retailers. What nice about Costco is you can buy in quantity for a cheap price. It is also nice to find products from home when I'm in Japan. http://bit.ly/Zyzuz

I've been considering the Gun Clock, seems like an interesting way to wake up, but a friend of mine warned: "Knowing you, you'd probably hurl one of your half-finished Gunpla at it instead." O_O

Looking at that shelf full of figures (and knowing that there's places full of plastic model and action figure goods) does make me wish (sometimes) that I lived in Japan. I still find it ironic that my parents have been to Japan (my Dad studied Engineering in Nagoya once upon a time), most friends I know who are younger than me have gone to Japan, but me, the guy who's been wanting to go there ever since seeing documentaries of the Sapporo Yukimatsuri at the age of 5, can never find both time or money to go. Somewhere up there, a great deity exists and he's laughing at me...

Interesting alarm clock. I always tend to dreamily snooze my phone alarms, so I developed a new strategy : Recording my own voice to set as alarm the night before.

"Lerry, you have ADDMATHS AND HISTORY NOT DONE! You better wake up early and finish them or you be screwed."

    Very effective.

Good to hear your camera's okay. I bet repair would cost bombs. Btw, messy fridges? Count me in! I sometimes do some mini grocery shopping. Milk, yogurt drink, etc.

i wipe stuff like vegetables and fruits before keeping them in the fridge - but only in rainy season since they become wet. usually keep them right inside as they come.
saw an almost empty jar on topmost shelf in your fridge. you could empty it and make some space xD.
all supermarkets here have too pricey meats so usually avoid them. and they dont even try to match prices of online sites, not that online site prices differ by much.
and that sell by today thing is not available here. Here fresh stuff could mean anything from a day to two days old. :(

Good thing yours didn't get damaged, although I suppose if it did you would just end up getting

I can't seem to figure out some of the do-not sign pictures, does the pyramid of people mean
that pyramid-schemes are not allowed? Also not sure what the person leaning forward means, or the

I would like one of (almost) everything on that shelf with all the Figmas and Revoltechs, as well
I also couldn't really get in to the Busou Shinki series, I got one and

Awww man, Danny, i love this post!!!

i so miss shopping in tokyo esp shinjuku. I can spend an entire day just in Takashimaya Times Square. A few hours in tokyu hands, lunch upstairs, then HMV, then Kinokuniya, finally grab some dinner from the basement depachika before heading back to the hotel.

haven't spent much time at bic, have spent more time and money at yodabashi in shinjuku. i usually compare prices as i have found some stuff cheaper at yodabashi than tokyu hands.

was once told that milo is just sugared water, not the best thing to drink.

i once asked my wife what is the japanese word for 'limited edition', but she hesitated to tell me cos she's afraid i'll go buy all kinds of limited edition stuff. <^;^>

What's the point in wiping it? Not to spread bacteria or something like that? That's pointless I think. There's no way of preventing bacteria from finding their way to your fridge or your food. And consuming some amount of bacteria is also healthy because it helps you create antibodies.

Speaking of company issues, there was a meat company that had issues with their equipment being unclean or something amongst those lines. ah.. i see myself trying to pack my bags with electronics when i go visit japan lol!/wow u bought a lot! and it was so cheap/ we used to have a washing machine just like the ones u have in japan but it died (was about 40 years old) and we bought this new one that looks like US laundry style lol and it drys and all but it sucks it's too little and the drying function doesn't work too well/ i want to taste mango pudding ;_; we sould have that here/ i think we have a couple of Aldo stores here in two of the most well known malls/ lol the thing about the milk i think it wasn't as bad as here once a man died in a machine in a coca=cola (coke) factory and ppl started to say that the man's blood got into some of the bottles so no one bought coke untill about some 4 months passed lol! creepy/ those japanesse malls look a little bit like the ones we have here in the east part of the city (the best part of the capital city here in Venezuela. bye bee~~!! lol

    A few comments/questions:
    1) I'm assuming "Chemist" is a word for what we'd call a "Drug Store" in the US? (Places like Walgreens or Rite Aid.)
    2) As for the Gun O'clock, that ad is one of the funniest Engrish things I've seen. XD And it certainly adds a level of complexity to turning off the alarm clock that makes you have to be more awake than if you could just hit a snooze button. ;)
    3) Typically around here, washing machines are top-loading, and dryers are front-loading. The only places I've seen front-loading washing machines are in laundromats.
    4) No, I've never heard of wiping stuff down before it is put into the fridge. Washing fresh fruits and veggies before preparing/eating them, sure, but not before putting them in the fridge. n.n;

    I've rarely seen a washing machine that loads from the side like a dryer. The only place I've seen them is in commercial laundry centers. I've always used the top loading machines ^^;

Hey Danny I wonder if this would work as a good carrying case?

There's such a great selection there from what I gather. Here in the U.S. all the big company stores uses some algorithm to discontinue items that don't sell as fast as they want. And that makes selection over here cookie cutter miserable. It's no fun. Boring. Instead they make the store look prettier. And it's harder and harder to find little mom and pop shops who do have good variety and put new and different things out to try. Love Tabasco with soy sauce for sushi and stuff!

I bought a package of those triops eggs one time, and it wasn't as nice as I thought it'd be. They cannibalized each other until only one was left, even though I fed them often. Plus, the water smelled bad. I think it might have been because the container was too small, since I had to change the water almost everyday.

Danny-san, you should buy more organic food. *sigh I guess all is fine if the medical test says so. Today was groceries day, but we usually don't buy at stores which are too expensive. There are many street markets around the city. Although large stores get full in the weekend. I hate the people that use carts when the store is full. And they pay with credit card... and try to distribute the cost in all their cards. Stupid people. =( And they bring the whole family.

Most girls are shy when you first attempt to snap pics of their pie. They always worry if they are hot enough, and if there is unsightly crust. Mmm... hot pie is hot.
However, the girls that stand on the corner here don't giggle when you ask them for pics of their pie. They just ask for $50.

Haha! Gun-O-clock is actually one of my very early post on DC mem news way back: http://www.dannychoo.com/detail/mac/eng/image/7342/GunOclock.html

    Fantastic post as always Danny.
    -
I do however have a Question for you though relating an image in the post (and I'd very much appreciate it, if I could get a response back from you because I think you could answer this fairly quickly)
    -
Anyway, if I'm not Art-Directing a project or kerning typography too name a few of the things I do, I like to stay in shape by running and of course running requires a pair of decent shoes. So here I am reading this post and I notice you've snapped an image of the interior of Nike, and needless to say, there is a Nike trainer on display which I am in love with (It's the black one directly beneath that Japanese chaps elbow.)
    -
The only problem is I can't identify it as the text below the image is:
    -
    1. In Japanese
    2. Microscopic
    -
I've also done countless Google searches for: Nike, Shox, Nike Shox, Nike Training Shoes etc. using the clues in both images(the shock columns on the shoe, and the fact that the show is under "Training" category) that said, I've ended up with nothing remotely useful!
    -
So the only way I can find out the model of this shoe is: if you Zoomed in on the original image, and translated the Japanese name for me!
    -
I hope this isn't too much to ask of you and I would very much appreciate it if you would reply to this comment when you have the chance to.
    -
    -
    Kind Regards
    Dave

Top load washing machines use 50 % or more water than front loaders, hence front loaders here in Oz are the main sellers, I recently bought one and its fabulous cleans better than my old top loader as well, bought a metal cabinet for it to stand on I'm over 1.8 Metres tall bending would be a killer otherwise. Fridges nowadays are a hit n miss most will be lucky to last 5 to 10 years, most whitegoods are like electronic gadgets, not built to last sadly.

    >.> I could live at Bic Camera. It's an amazing place. Are all the figures expensive? I might have to decorate my dorm room with some of them when I arrive in Tokyo... Your fridge looks super full. I'm surprised that all that food cost that much, but then again food in Japan seems really expensive. But so yummy! ^_^

How cool that Japan gets KABUTO PRAWNS?? Send me one. =)

Over here, we have planktons called Sea Monkeys. They're also sold in toy stores. Feeding those things weren't easy, as you either had to get their food packets by mail order. It looks like the Kabuto prawn package might be the same thing, but having a mini horseshoe crab is way cooler xD.

    Japanese supermarkets always impress me.
In australia every supermarket sell all the same rubbish and they all look the same.
Im japan I love the way they layout the food, and its presented in such a attractive way.
and if supermarket shopping isnt your thing on the day, you dont have to go far to find a little shop selling al sorts of small produce!

    Just love it!!

Danny - the top loaders style washing machines are still the more popular type here in Australia as well. Mainly because they are cheaper to buy and we don't have the space issues like in Japan or the UK. That was something that I had to get used to in the UK having the washing machine in the kitchen. Here we have a Laundry room. I noticed that in Japan there were a lot of houses that had washing machines outside like near the garage or car parking spot. Is that common or did I see some randoms? (they were top loaders)

I had a Tamagotchi, but I went off to Uni and my brother was supposed to look after it but it died :-(

I got a strange alarm clock in Akihabara last year but I've never figured out how to use it apart from setting the time. It has a man in it and if you press a button he does stuff. I think you can use it to time cooking as well.

What does that sign mean at the shopping arcade entrance, "no gangs of teenagers" or something?

Aaah, my first post! I love Shibuya. Took my 15yo daughter to Tokyo and Kyoto last year. Am going back end of next year with her and my son. He didn't want to go last time but when he saw the photos and heard my otaku daughter gabbling on about it, he changed his mind. Love your site, love your photos, have been making lots of notes of places to go from your comments and photos. I came back with a different outlook on life here in Australia after Japan. I think I could easily live in Tokyo or surrounds but that's impossible. Sad Face. :)
