A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

These past few weeks turned out to be one of the most busiest periods since the start of Mirai Inc. Interviews, TV filming, events, networking, beta launches, iPhone apps and preparations for the Tokyo Figure Show. Wont be anywhere near the scale of the Wonfes but then again we are catering for a different audience.

So its been a whole month since the last A Week in Tokyo. Had to make a decision to blog a bit less so that I could get more of the bigger significant changes out to Mirai Gaia which you can see under beta at figure.mirai.fm.

Starting off with a photo session for a future publication.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

I think this is the first time that we see Patrick out of his cosplay gear - the author of the Otaku Encyclopedia.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Haven't seen a manual camera for ages. The film for this particular camera costs a bomb apparently.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Back from a round of shopping at Costco.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Hiyashi Chuka - cold sour noodles with a few ice cubes.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Flicking through some mags just before grabbing some milk. Some convenience stores tie up the mags and some don't.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

In the evening watching one of my fave TV programs - Gaia no Yoake. A business trends show. Today they talk about how tidying up can save money in these economic times. For example, one of the companies featured had employees who spent a few hours each day looking for stuff.
Those few hours were added up in cost and they worked out that the salary of 2 employees were going to waste.

While both of my parents are notorious for keeping a load of crap around the house, I tend to get rid of as much as possible to save time. For example, while the figure and gadget samples are free - there is a cost of keeping them - my time.

I could stock them in the retire cabinet but when its full I then need to make time to find/make space to put more "free" stuff. If I spend an hour sorting out boxes of stuff that I don't really want then I've wasted X yen. And the more stuff I have, the more difficult it is to find stuff - thus even more time is wasted.
Get rid of the things you don't want so that you can find the stuff that you do want.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Filming with BBC World - being sent a DVD copy and will upload as soon as I get it.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

After over 10 years, SPEED is back - used to listen to their tunes when I came to Japan as a visitor.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

At Lalaport having some Laksa.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

At many shopping malls, the more you shop, the more free stuff they give you. In some cases they give you goodies...

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

...and in some cases they give you monies.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Looking through the glass into a smoking chamber.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

At night when shops close up at Lalaport, some shops are left like this - with just a rope at the front. I' sure all of this would be gone if this was Hackney in London.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Ramen and Chahan set.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Out n about by day in Gakugei Daigaku - another bustling area which we discovered recently. About a 20 min walk from where we are.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Gegege no Kitaro goodies at Mc Dees.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Gakugei Daigaku station.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

A newly discovered lake that comes complete with row boats and huge carp fish.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Got hold of more Clear Racks for the figures - available at Amazon Japan for 2,480 yen each.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Some freshly make Omusubi for dindins. Also called "Onigiri" - rice with a filling wrapped in dried seaweed.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Spent an evening actually learning aperture and other SLR settings. Do an image search with the word "diagram" on the end like aperture diagram - the diagrams may help you absorb the knowledge quicker than just a block of text - helped me a lot.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Looks like its that time of year where politicians grab their megaphone and shout out loud on the streets.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Some health food is good once in a while.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

The lads playing around with the iPhone Mirai Clock app.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Just before visiting the 1/1 scale Gundam in Odaiba. Having some Indonesian food with the lads while browsing on the Leopardized Dell Mini 9.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

"Oshibori" are the wet rolled up towels that many restaurants hand out to customers. They always remind me of a restaurant that I previously worked in where one employee used them to wipe his armpits and shoes! Those oshibori would then go in the wash and then be served up to customers again - so if you see a crinkly hair in your oshibori then you know where its been ^^;

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Katsu and my fave Japanese soup Tonjiru made from swine stock.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

At the launch party for the Otaku Encyclopedia.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Frankie and his moesome Nice T-Shirt.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Picking up some Mr Donuts.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

A Ramen place filled with manga for the customers to read.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Shio Ramen. "Shio" = "Salt."

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Picking up my armor from dry cleaning.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Tis the jolly mosquito season meaning that the Mosquito Defense Systems need to be activated. The bottle of liquid goes into the dark purple dome thing which heats up the liquid. When mosquitoes come into the immediate area, the hole at the top shoots out a 200.5volt bolt of electricity at the mosquito - a burning smell remains in the air until the liquid perfume absorbs it.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Minced up cow with nasu.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

The coffee shops over here like to make their logo look as similar as possible to Starbucks.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

BLT Sand served up my Mikuru. "Sando" (sometimes written as "Sand") is short for sandwich.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Slice of eel on rice - some love it and some hate it.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Katsu to take out from Saboten.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Some places at lunch time do crazy deals. This place sells a bowl of seafood on rice for 100 yen (1 USD-ish) but usually costs 1,200 yen (12 USD-ish). Available to the first 10 people only.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Getting rid of that PC that I've had for many years. Nice case that alone does not warrant keeping it. Chris carried it home with him on the train!

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

This van patrols the area watching out for folks who steal recyclable materials or dump rubbish without permission.
Throughout Japan, we can only throw certain rubbish out on certain days. For example, in our area, we can only throw out combustible (burnable) rubbish on Wednesday and Saturday. We would be in toraburu if we threw out stuff on another day or try to hide combustible rubbish with non-combustible for example.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Occasionally see TV crews out n about getting opinions from the public about things like what they thought about some famous person having an affair with the nextdoor neighbor etc.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Chahan for dindins.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Been spending a lot of time on Mirai Gaia over at figure.mirai.fm. We need to upgrade the Good Smile website, dannychoo.com and otaku.fm too.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

My old Fujitsu laptop which I've been trying to get rid of. The thing about getting rid of computers is that you cant give it to a novice user because they will ask you stuff about it all the time - the point of getting rid of it is to save time and space. But all the experienced users who I asked to take it away (for free) didn't want it!

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

When I was a PC user, I couldn't understand why Macs didn't have floppy drives.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Choosing which games to get rid of. Have not finished any of these!

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

And this is where I take my second hand games - Book Off. The prices displayed here is what they pay for these games.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Back in England, I used to drill holes all over the house to put up shelves. So when we bought our house in Tokyo, I got hold of a wireless drill - used it a total of once! Houses in Japan are generally not made of brick but of wood meaning that you can easily drill holes with a manual drill - or just push and twist a screwdriver through the wall.

Also bought myself an electric saw at the time which I used only once too - need to get rid of both.

The step down transformer is an interesting story. When we moved to Seattle from Tokyo (which you can read about in the Working at Amazon and Microsoft photo article), we bought 2 (count em) heavy duty step down transformers which were powerful enough to power a fridge or washing machine. Amazon shipped all our stuff to Seattle but little did we know that apartments in America came with dishwashers fridges and washing machines! Most apartments in Japan are pretty much empty when you move in.

For the 5 months that we stayed in Seattle, our fridge and washing machine stayed outside on our balcony. Before coming back to Tokyo, we gave the fridge to a comrade and brought back the washing machine which we still use today. Have no idea why these step down transformers came back to Tokyo with us! Need to get rid of everything in the photo.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Haruhi snaps some pics of tempura and zaru udon lunch.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Some places display plastic representations of food and some just use real food wrapped up.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Walnuts are supposed to be good for the brains and some folks say that its because they look like brains. They also taste like brains too.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Olympus E-P1 - The Lumix LX3 killer? Currently costs about 90,000 yen.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

When buying electronics in Japan, look for the cheapest price online of what you want and make a print out and then take it to Bic Camera. More often than not, they will match the price.

A Week in Tokyo 40 title=

Playing around with the Gundam Fix Figurations that I dug out which reminded me how cool they are. Did they stop making these since their Robot Tamashii line?

Those clear rack are any good for Gundam models?
Wouldn't mind getting one or two.

Free stuffs when you shop even more? Now, why can't we have that here?

As for the Robot Damashii & GFF thing, IIRC, they're still making GFF.

I know how you feel. Since I stumbled on to Danny's site my Japanese food consumption has tripled. Maybe Danny is secretly embedding subliminal messages in his articles prompting people to eat more Japanese food. :p

And after reading your experience with Oshibori.. I can never look at them the same again @.@ It's a good thing they're sterilized in high temperature before use..

There are specific days for rubbish dumping? Then in other days the rubbish will pile up inside the house? O_O I suppose that can encourage people to produce less rubbish.

Haha. When you said, " We are catering for a difference audience," I was like WHAT?! They make you bring food?!

You should do a giveaway for the Fujitsu. Even if we(especially me) don't know our way around it would still be cool to be able to say, "I have Danny Choo old, discarded laptop."

I've heard of cold noodles before, but didn't realize they actually put ice cubes on it (oooh and Kagami is back in action!). Smoking chamber!? That's pretty much gone around here. No more indoor smoking allowed in Vancouver. My workplace used to have one lunch room just for smokers.

Curious, how frequent do politicians go shouting out loud on the streets?

Gah! I'm so ashamed that I don't recognize that Indonesian food even though I'm originally from there... looks like soto though. Me likey unagidon ^^

Here in Bangkok they travel around the city on the back of trucks with loud speakers. It's super annoying when your trying to have a quiet weekend and every 20 minutes somebody drives past your place yelling in distorted Thai.

Wah, you still kept that touchscreen Fujitsu, I sold mine for about USD300 few years ago~~~

I think Robot Tamashii is an improvement line for the previous Fix Figuration line.

Olympus E-P1 - Been researching on this for a week now. Yes, this is LX3 killer with the Micro Four Third interchangeable lenses like DSLR but with much smaller & compact body. The price cost twice as LX3. Will be picking up my LX3 from the shop in about 4hours from now ^o^

          Yes, it's a 6x6 rangefinder... takes 120 and 220 film.

You can see the rangefinder window right there in the picture, in the upper right corner of the camera (while viewing it from the front) :D

It's really a beautiful system, compact and light.

Medium format rangefinders are great, especially the old folding ones. There are just as small as a 35mm/Digital SLR, but takes 6x6-6x9 cm images you just can't beat. They use super quiet leaf shutters and flash sych on all speeds.

I don't know why I sold mine off. orz

They brought back the Olympus PEN series as a 4/3 camera. The first I heard of that, but at that price range I'll get myself a Sony SLR then.

Yesterday I turned on my tv to watch some BBC World while I had lunch and the first thing I see is some guy in tokyo dressed as an imperial soldier. hahaha. amazing. It was a teaser of this thing they filmed with danny. Will wait till he uploads it. Quite funny. I never thought somebody doing this could get so notorious (apart from his many other merits)...I would be terrified to step out into the street dressed like that :)

So many pictures of food, all looking delicious. From looking at the pictures of food, it makes me assume that most people who live in city/urban areas eat out alot, or it could just be me with my ignorance from living in a suburban area though.
Book Off really have some good trade in deals, why can't the stores over here give more money for used games. Getting rid of games? That's madness! I keep all mine, well most of them anyway. Although out of that pile, probably Gundam Dynasty warriors.

I look forward to the future publicaion which involved the photoshoot and the full video which involved filming by BBC World.

I think I was around when my wife was watching that particular show of Gaia no Yoake. I can remember what you explain perfectly.

I love the fact that Speed are back and they are tanned! I think most women not afraid of being naturally tanned are Okinawan. I'm so fed up of this unhealthy white skin trend.

About the skin thing, it's funny you say that, here in the UK girls think that in order to be beautiful they need to have a tan so they end up looking practically orange (like ganguro girls), coated in fake tan and going on the sun beds! How odd!

image 27147 - even when I was in college (at least five years ago), the cost of photographic film was soaring still. how strange that even when digital photography is all the rage, the costs of analog photography remain the same.

image 27148 - some of the costco stuff are available in my country, but definitely not that paella - was it any good?

image 27171 - *laughs* *shudders* oshibori are a rare breed indeed here....

image 27189 - I think I'm well on the way to mastering the secret of chahan - someday I must cook some for you and for your wifey :)

This post feels longer than the usual WiT post.

But mmm... Japanese ramen! Some of the photos remind of Hong Kong such as the streets and stores. Missing the food from there already!

It's interesting how some of the stores just have a rope around them... Then again, they are inside a shopping mall so any thief would get caught on camera.

And nice PC case indeed! Cooler Master brand... First time I seen a case with glass front. The Centurion I have is screw-free which is great for expanding and saves time.

    I hate to say this but, I can see why computer enthusiasts don't the old mini laptop... Usually they're all technology enthusiasts too which means always the latest stuff for them too. The non-enthusisasts on the other hand will just want something that works ^^;

Half price seems about right for used games. I see the more recent games get close to full price... Something that you wouldn't get here unless it was up for auction perhaps.

Getting rid of old things so I have space for new things is a good idea. The problem for me is that I'm unable to let myself get rid of some of these old figures... they were gifts from birthdays or christmas. Not to say all that I receive are bad, just some of these consume a lot of space but aren't really high quality or nice looking.

Lots of weird junk hitches along when you pack, whether it's for a move or just for vacation. For some reason, I came back from Taiwan with a bunch of plastic utensils.

We see your office so often nowadays - usually through an interview or something. ^^ It's great for us film guys though. You generally want your interview subject to be someplace quiet, as well as in front of something that represents them. Offices are usually the former but not the latter. In your case, walking into your office is like walking into a montage of your life.

        ^^; As sketchy as it sounds...asking for forgiveness is far easier than asking for permission. Unless the plan is to sell those pictures, I would just go for it. If you're not allowed, they'll ask you to stop, at which point you a) either have the shot already or b) they make you delete it. Either way, you lose nothing. ^^;

...of course, that's assuming you didn't choose to shoot a picture of some sensitive location, like a military base or Tiananmen Square. >_> That's just asking for trouble.

Hey Danny here's an idea i'm sure you must have heard before. With all those freebies you're getting and not enough space to store them, why not make more "GIVEAWAYS" contest....and maybe a "LUCKY DRAW" or something...That way u can get rid of stuff and give the readers a good run for the fun of it.

Here, even if a game is brand new, the most I have ever seen someone get is about $15. The average seems to be anywhere from $2 - $5. I has a book-off somewhat near me, maybe I should see if they take games here.

The prices for the games are actually more than reasonable. 3000 yen would be around 39 dollars, and that's what a game costs here. Of course I don't know the price of the games in Japan (only that they tend to be higher than in US) so maybe this isn't a reasonable as it seems.

Walnuts taste gooood~ Speaking of walnuts, if your ever in the Northwest USA Danny you should stop by and have some King Salad. You will never find a better salad.

That's cool that you think like an economist Danny. ^.^ I have just recently, since starting my Econ class a few weeks ago, started to think more like an economist. Learning that anything, even when money is not involved, still has an opportunity cost really made me think about everything I do. Do they not have e-recycle programs over in Japan? There's a big push for people to start recycling all their electronics that they don't want. You can drop it off at a bottle depot and they'll take it no questions asked. Lots of nasty chemicals in that stuff.

Interesting photo and comment which says allot about where you used to live. The same can be said for most any small to large metro in the states given the lack of morals and values in our society today which allot of it could be traced back to the 1960's and a certain Dr. Spock and his idea's about parenting.

Guess that your allot younger than I am but I've had four macs with floppy drives ( 1 currently ) and worked in a university computer lab where all the macs had floppies including the apple 2 sitting in the storage room / make out lounge. The imac generation basically did away with the floppy drive as well as starting the end of the zip and jazz drives and given the declining prices in thumb drive technology I'd wager that optic drives will be the next thing that apple does away with.

Why did you buy stepdown transformers for moving from Tokyo to Seatille?

America is 110 Volts and Japan is 100, the disparity between the two is not enough to cause any major issues for *most* devices.
