Member WiseFreeman shows us what happens (in some cases) when packages are delivered when one is not at home - left outside the premises to be battered by the forces of nature.

The delivery service in Japan is most excellent - fast and efficient and they even come to pick up stuff that you want to send at no extra charge. This is called Shuka [集荷] and I will talk about this more in depth in the next A Week in Tokyo.
However, there is a delivery company called Sagawa who is known to throw parcels - they are cheap which is why many still use them.
Kuroneko are more expensive but they don't throw stuff. The Japan postal service is great too.

Original text from WiseFreeman below.

This is what I saw at my gate when I came back from outstation.
To put it worst, it has been there exposed to sun & rain for over 3days!
I was away for 10days on a vacation during that period & I live all alone in a 5-rooms house.

This has nothing to do with HobbyLink Japan, instead HLJ did a very excellent job before the parcel left for delivery.
It shows the quality of our local postal services in Malaysia.
So, what happened to the lovely figure inside?
I'll post it up after I get back from breaking the Guinness World Records (should I make it back alive......)
Please kindly share your opinion - What Is The Most Worst Condition Ever Happen To Your Parcel?

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

I've had packages dropped off in front of my house like that before too. Fortunately, it's under a covered area, so it's fine. It's still okay if it did rain though, because the packaging is usually plastic wrapped, and/or suspended in between air cushions. While the shipping box may be soaked through, I think the box inside should be intact.

Same thing happen to my buddy package. Lucky for him, is that his place get flooded on rainy day, and didn't get wash away.

Really should use EMS if you are living on ground houses. Never happen to me because I live in an apartment block and all my delivery have to be pick up at the post office.

Signature/confirmation is not required for SAL shipping, they just leave it on your doorstep unless you need to pay customs.

Canada Post just leave SAL packages on my doorsteps too.

If you know you'll be away around the time you packages arrive, use EMS or registered airmail so you know your package will be sitting in the post office instead of your doorstep.

      Sad to see it happen...

My mailman makes me pick up SAL packages at the local post office sometimes, when they don't fit in the mailbox of between the 2 doors, if there is "snow" in the way or whatever. I actually like it better this way. But I think the mailman is just too lazy to walk all the way to my door steps so he just leaves a slip at the mailbox on the side of the road without even ringing the door bell lol. ( and the door is only like 10 steps away)

If I'm not mistaken, that only applies to EMS or registered mail which has tracking number of sorts. Those kind of shipping requires you to sign to receive the item and they will normally give you a pink slip to collect it at the post office should nobody be around at your house when they deliver it.

SAL shipping doesn't require any signature on delivery. EMS does because it's registered, I believe. That's why it was left out there to soak.

I guess it depends on the country's postal services. In my country, the postman will also leave a note for you to collect your parcel at the post office if it is too big to be stuff into the mailbox, regardless of the shipment method.

In the US if you have it delivered as SAL or even airmail you don't have to sign and they'll leave it on your doorstep. Their reasoning is that if you choose a cheaper method of shipping the contents are not "that important" to you and therefore they can just leave it. I've actually bothered to ask our Postmaster before when I thought a package or two of mine that had come via SAL, had been stolen (just turned out that the company sending was REALLY slow and lied about the date they had shipped them off).

It's really funny, I order stuff from Japan (and sometimes HK and Taiwan) all of the time, half way around the world from me, and I've seriously never once had a package lost in the five years or so I've been doing this. Two weeks ago, I ordered from a store in Virginia which is one state away from me, the item came and was damaged and I sought a replacement. Shipped it back with 2-day shipping and it has been 6 days, and it seems to have disappeared into thin air.

They left it outside? Usually in the UK the postal service will take the parcel back to the depot and leave a note. They have just left a parcel on the doorstep a couple of times without even ringing the doorbell when they delivered it, but luckily my family were at home so it got noticed pretty quickly.

The worst I've had is a dented box, but luckily I've never had any harm come to the actual contents.

I have an old outhouse-come-shed building in my backyard with only a bolt keeping the door shut...we have a local postie so most times he just puts it in there and leaves a note, had a couple of delivery companies do the same too. Quite lucky in that respect

how bad an otaku life in indo be? we practically scavange everything we can see in local, because international people buy through the net, and got them faster than us, practically leaving us with other un-popular stuffs

I filed a law sue soon later, in return they provided me a value-worth shipping contract free of charge as compensation.

Aww... that looks awful; sorry that happened to you. In Chicago, United States Postal Service is very inconsistent-- very reliable sometimes and then suddenly horrible, and they don't take responsibility for anything. I often have my neighbour's mail delivered to me and many times have had flat, document or photo packages folded and shoved into the letter box. Recently I received a box from Robert's Anime Corner Store-- the postman updated the computer system saying it was "delivered," but it was not! I never got it! The post office said that they delivered it and said something must have happened to it after they left. The nice guy at the Anime Store had to absorb the cost of replacing it for me (very nice of him).

People usually hate it when their documents had been folded & forcefully stuck into the mailbox......

For important documents, I always remind the sender to send via registered mail or dispatch their own office boy to physically send it over to my company.

I generally stay away from SAL shipping. First package I ever had shipped to me in SAL was Kallen School Univern ver. by Alpha-Omega from HobbyLink Japan. HLJ did a fine job with the packaging, but the box arrived three weeks after the ship date and also came in crushed in the middle, like someone sat on it. Luckily there was some padding and elbow room between the package box and the figure box, and the figure box only suffered minor damage, and Kallen was unharmed.

    question:
    does this works in malaysia?

    -we order through SAL
    -post office got our item
-post office notify us to get the item to in the post office
-we go to the post office
    -we take the item

if their delivery sevice sucks, might as well be a delivery man ourself, considering their employee have no profesionalism and no love to their customer (customer satisfaction comes 1st)

    to every indonesia member:
can i do that in indonesia?

Usually the postman will leave a pick-up note & will divert the parcel to the post office incharge of that area if no one at home to receive.

OUCH! I would have been furious, most of the items I order out of the USA require a signature and that wouldn't happen, it would be held by the shippers or sent back.

The worst that has happened so far was when the 3 br 2 door garage house next door was being rented out by a father for his kids he wanted out of his house because they had a drug band. They practiced with amps on from 4pm till 2am usually 5 nights a week and had 2 or 3 drive up drug deals happen every practice in full view in the driveway. Well they helped themselves to a Fedex package on my front porch that was delivered after 7pm and left in my door. The box were shredded and the packing info sheet with the self adhesive glue to mail back thing was also taken. I can only guess one of those guys from the band has it posted in his garage somewhere and I did have to change my phone number as well. The items in the box 'may' have been dropped and damaged by them but nothing was destroyed. After this I bought those wireless cameras people use to watch their babies and such and started plugging them in on days I expected to get an order in.

You should call the cops on them for drug dealing, since you installed a camera, you could catch them on tape and use that as evidence against them (only if it can show them dealing).

Once I ordered a computer motherboard (about $150) and had it delivered through insured post. I was on vacation when it arrived and like yours, they left it at my door. Except I lived in an apartment building and it was promptly stolen. Post office claimed no responsibility even though I had a mail hold on and they weren't supposed to leave packages at all at the door, so I never got reimbursed... I hate the postal service -_-

Even the USPS here will try and leave a package in a place that is not exposed to the elements. If they can't find a place they just leave a notice.

Depending on how HLJ packaged it, the insides could be completely fine.

At least he received it. The worst condition in which I received a parcel was not receiving it at all. The postal service usually stole your packet and doesn't notify you about. I got worried after a delay of 2 months on my package, went to my local postal office and got redirected to capital central postal office. There was my package, completely opened and empty.
Is very common the steal of packages on the national postal service. That's why it's better to hire a courier or a very big insurance, even if you have to pay x15 times custom fees, at least they arrive.

I ordered the Macross Frontier 2009 calendar shipped via SAL. It didn't get left out in the weather but it was dented adding creases to my otherwise beautiful calendar. The other issue wasn't their fault but it left me less than satisfied. It was shipped rolled up in a tube shaped package. So along with the crease it likes to curl up on itself. The curl still hasn't worked itself out 100%. :(

That's too bad, sometime I wonder the cost saving by going SAL is worth the risk since signature is not required and no tracking. I had a SAL package lost on me once and it took me 5-6 months to settle with HLJ, though they did end up absorbing the charge.

Its worth getting the tracking number especially when the package comes from overseas.
My package took almost three months to arrive but I'm glad it wasn't lost.

    That is horrible. O_O

The worst I've ever had- I ordered an uchiwa from Singapore and the person only wrapped it in paper (wtf???)- no bubble wrap or cardboard. Luckily it wasn't completely ruined- but it had some small holes in it -_-

My mom's worst- she won a cookbook in a contest, but when it got here the book was soaking wet. JUST the book, not the packaging on the outside. Like someone had dropped the book in a fishtank, stuffed it in the packaging, and sent it. They were nice enough to send her a new one though.

I'm lucky to never have something this bad happen with an overseas shipment. In fact, all my HLJ boxes are almost always in perfect condition!

Domestic stuff on the other hand, I've had some problems with, though most of those were more the sender not know wtf they were doing when packing. Like putting six glass bottles of soda straight in a box with nothing more than a thin piece of foam wrapped around each bottle...

      Sounds like you ordered some Tentacle Grape soda too. Did any of your bottles leak? Two of mine did and I thought they were broken, somehow the soda managed to leak out of the bottlecap. Only two bottles out of the six didn't have the label ruined. ;_;

Haha, you're dead on. The caps on two of my bottles had come off completely, and another one leaked. I was able to salvage three, but I'm afraid to drink them, though I was planning on keeping one unopened anyways to sit with my bottle of Leninade.

Also, somewhat hilariously, the free condom that came with the bottles looked like someone had deliberately poked a hole through it. Though considering what happened with the soda, I imagine a few postal workers were pissed.

Oh wow, that's pretty bad. I wrote them about the problems and offered some packing suggestions, such as better foam packing and sealing each bottle in their own, sealed bag, but I never heard anything back. I actually drank 4 out of the 6. Wasn't bad, just your average grape soda.

Hopefully HLJ did one of their usually great packing jobs and everything survived. It's the tossing over the gate part that makes me worry. I really do hope the figure(s) survived...

I have lived in many different places in the US and have had everything from excellent to crappy USPS service. I always have all my figures shipped EMS. I glad to say nothing has ever happen to any of my shipments *knock on wood*

My recent bad experience was with Amazon. I ordered a computer textbook and it was shipped in a large, light weight box. The book arrived in terrible condition as did the box. ^^ I called Amazon and complained only to have them ship a replacement in the same manner. *facepalm*

I ordered a book off Ebay once, and we were not home when the mail lady delivered it. Since it would not fit in our mailbox she just pulled into our driveway and dropped the book on the ground, most likely not even getting out of her truck. We didn't notice it when we got home and actually ran over it. Luckily it was a thin Star Wars children's book so running over it didn't do any damage.

I really felt sorry for you. I also have the same experience. The post man just left my register mail at my doorstep. I guess he must be in the hurry to go home. There is one more case where my register mail is damage by paint (leakage from other parcel). They call me and tell me the contain of my mail I was shock at first on how they know what was inside the mail and at first he did not tell me that my latter is damage by the paint but instead he told me that my latter being accidentally rip open during the shipment process when I ask him how can this thing happen (I was very angry that time) and he explain to me that he is sorry because the content of the package was damage by paint. He ask me to take it at the main post office he even wrote a apology letter. Lucky the content was not that important.

This is a norm here.... Malaysia Pos service sux and i did have the same experience before with one of my parcel from HLJ. I have the same experience as you, the postmen came to my office and throw the package on the ground leaving it lying at the street in front of the gate.

The reason tat the pos office told me is u used SAL and it is not Registered Mail, they will treat it as normal mail. So I complain with the local Post Office Manager, and that dude was very nice, he told his postmen to keep those large package for me if no ppl answer the door (even if it is not registered mail).

So u can start with contacting the main post office through their website and then they will contact you if you are lucky they saw it (they reply me within half day), then it depends on how nice the district post manager.

So in the end which type of delivery you used? SAL or EMS? If it is EMS you can complain and make them paid for the damage. If it is SAL then you cant blame anyone.

Usually, the USPS keeps it until I sign for it and pick it up at the post office. They did it to me for packages coming from odd places, such as Uzbekistan.

Pff, there aren't any otaku goods coming out of Uzbekistan. ;) What's the maximum you've let a package go? Because I know the POs around where I've lived over here on the east coast, they threaten to send it back after about 5 days. If you're out of town, that gets annoying. Never had anything sent back, but miiiighty close. ><

Jeez, what kind of postal service is that? Leaving the package outside not only exposes it to the elements, but also risks having it stolen.

Luckily the post office here simply leaves a note in my letterbox asking me to come to the post office to come collect it.

Though that usually means my local post office, meaning I have to arrange for it to be picked up at the post office closest to where I work, or I'll never be able to collect anything as my work doesn't finish till late.

Which is why I spent a few bucks to rent a post office box close to where I work.

I've actually tried to do that before, and they said that they wouldn't be able to take delivery of EMS packages because they need to go to an actual address. Which, Hobby Search kinda concurs with them. My "assigned" PO is 20 min away from me and is a total pain to have to go to all the time, there is however one 5 min away from me, which is where I send the majority of my outgoing mail and the one I asked about the PO Box...

I usually have packages shipped to me at the office, even between 4 people living at my house, I never know if someone will be there when a package arrives. Most of the stuff I normally have shipped is electronic, the elements are my primary concern, especially in New England (they're saying snow is a possibility for this weekend, isn't it April?). That and I'm worried that the dog's lead will break for one unlucky delivery driver when nobody is home.

That's crappy that your stuff was broken, though. I honestly don't even care if I overpay on shipping or whatever, so long as it gets to me alright. It really does seem like the regular postal system no matter where you're at is more careless than a courier service. I had something shipped over SEA mail that took 7 weeks or so, and it arrived perfectly when UPS delivered it. It was delicate, too (a robot) and nothing was damaged in transit, I was pleased!

Everything I have ever got from them(resin kits, models, figures, books, model supplies) has come through with more than adequate protection and packing. If the goods are damaged, just email Scott and they will make good in my experience.

I can't really say I've ever had a problem with the DOD (damage on delivery) thing, but for the first time in like a year I bought a figure from an american store with so far disastrous results. The package didn't really need to have external damage. The figure, which I posted as a new item last week, was Misaka Mikoto from To Aru Index and she came with a chip out of her stand, and chipped paint to show the orange undercoat on her one shoe. I purchased her from Robert's Corner Animation Store, and when I asked them for an exchange they said, hey no problem! I mailed her back priority mail last Saturday, priority is 2-3 days. It is now Friday and they claim to not have received the item, and have since taken the listing of the item down from their website. The shop in question is 1 state away from me, so I'm kind of skeptical here. I honestly didn't think I'd need to throw delivery confirmation on a return item... So I feel your pain, having to deal with damage, and for me -- loss, heh.

Ouch, I've only had one bad experience with badly handled shipping, back when I ordered a game and the postal service mangled the case quite badly, looked like it had been crushed. No damage to the disk itself, so I just ignored it. But ususally around here, your package just waits at the local post office if they can't take it to your house.

I'm from Malaysia but now live in Brunei...

In Brunei we have to go to the post office to collect our stuff from HLJ or whatever internet shopping website we bought them from. Even if we got it free from Danny Choo...hahahaha

The post office will send a pink card or sometimes they will call us and inform us about the shipment that just arrived for collection.

Once in post office, we have to also show the customs whatever there is inside the box... nudity or "overly sexy" figurine wont make it out here.... the tolerance level towards "eichi stuff" or porn related material is zero.

But if it's for normal Figma, figurine and GunPla... should be no problem.

In a way I think it's troublesome but for sure my items is safe. The other troublesome part is the censorship from customs... but at the end they just doing their job and if you don't buy any "prohibited items" there is nothing to be scared of... every country have different rules and regulations, we just have to live with it.

When I was in Malaysia, I prefer to use office address for all my online shopping delivery address as Post Office always do the delivery during working days - I did check with the local post office about their procedure and roughly I can understand how they work..

I don't like to use home address as I expect this kind of problem... after all most of the time (for normal people) we are always at the office - working, Monday to Friday... even if I happen to be on holidays, I can just ask my colleague to accept the delivery for me...

So I think to just solely blame the Post Office is not really fair - but yes they have their share in this problem as well...

I think it's better if we evaluate all possible angle so that we can get our item safely. Communicating with the local post office is also another way to understand each other better...

In my country, when you're not at home, they deliver the package at your neighbour's, and leave a note at your door so you know where to pick it up. Unfortunately, one of my neighbours is a terrible woman, so I always hope I won't have to pick anything up at her place. ^^ Situation has not occured so far, luckily. :D

True. Hobby Link Japan is excellent in sending the package.I love HLJ.
It all depends on the postman.

Worst experience I've had is sending my Ipod(the old 80 gb one!) to my brother only to find out its lost when the rest of the stuff in the package was still there.
