Been living in Tokyo for nearly 10 years but only recently managed to visit Yokosuka last Saturday - inspired to go after member punynari joined dannychoo.com and watching something on Yokosuka on the TV the other day.

Photo was taken in the afternoon-ish in Dobuita street at Yokosuka. A bunch of men carrying a Mikoshi which we talked about in the Japanese Festivals photo article. Video taken below on the Lumix LX3.

Yokosuka title=

Zooming back a few hours after arriving at Yokosuka - the Shoppers Plaza is ideal for parking and immediately shows up after punching in the phone number into the car navigation.

Here they have a few cars on display which we take a gander at.

Yokosuka title=

This car has the gearbox on the front of the dashboard leaving a load of leg room for those who have feet fetish.

Yokosuka title=

The Noah - named from being able to fit a load inside.

Yokosuka title=

Nice interior.

Yokosuka title=

The first time I've seen cars on display inside a shopping center - great idea to get folks to have a look instead of going to a showroom.

Yokosuka title=

Very spacious interior for those who want to get up to some hanky panky inside.

Yokosuka title=

First time I've come across this "Raum."

Yokosuka title=

Toyota also had other models I've never seen advertised on TV.

Yokosuka title=

Some yummy looking crepe.

Yokosuka title=

Feel like some Thai food so its outside to the parking lot.
Here we see folks lining up for tickets for a cruise around the harbor to see the military ships. The last cruise is at 2pm I think (?) and lasts about 45 mins.

Reading up on the history of a location before visiting it will give you an enlightened view of the area. Some Yokosuka facts plucked from Wikipedia below.

The adventurer William Adams (inspiration for a character in the novel Shōgun), the first Briton to set foot in Japan, arrived at Uraga aboard the Liefde in 1600. In 1612, he was granted the title of samurai and a fief in Hemi within the boundaries of present-day Yokosuka, due to his services to the Shogun. There he founded a family with Oyuki, the daughter of Magome Kageyu, a noble samurai and official of Edo Castle. William and Oyuki had a son called Joseph, and a daughter, Susanna. A monument to William Adams (called Miura Anjin in Japanese) is still visible in Yokosuka.

In 1853, United States naval officer Matthew Perry arrived in Tokyo Bay with his fleet of Black Ships and came ashore near present day Yokosuka, leading to the opening of diplomatic and trade relations between Japan and the United States.

Yokosuka became the first modern arsenal to be created in Japan. The construction of the arsenal was the central point of a global modern infrastructure, that was to prove an important first step for the modernization of Japan's industry. Modern buildings, the Hashirimizu waterway, foundries, brick factories, and technical schools to train Japanese technicians were established.

Yokosuka was to become one of the main arsenals of the Imperial Japanese Navy into the 20th century, in which were built battleships such as Yamashiro, and aircraft carriers such as Hiryū and Shōkaku. Major naval aircraft were also designed at the Yokosuka Naval Air Technical Arsenal. The only preserved pre-Dreadnought battleship in the world, the Mikasa in Yokosuka.

Between 1938 and 1945 more than 260 caves in more than 20 separate tunnel/cave networks were built throughout the base. There are 27 kilometers of known tunnels on the base. Many more tunnels are scattered throughout Yokosuka and the surrounding areas. During the war, these tunnels and caves provided areas in which work could be done in secrecy, safe from air attacks.
A 500 bed hospital, a large electrical power generating facility, and a midget submarine factory and warehouse were among the many facilities in caves around the base. During the war, more than 800 personnel actually lived in these caves. Each naval base department was ordered to dig its own caves, which accounts for the lack of an overall organization to the cave and tunnel system. In 1992, a complete survey of all known caves was conducted, and all the caves except for three still in use were sealed up for safety reasons. The cave that is currently used as a command bunker by the US military was used for several years after the war to grow mushrooms, which were sold in the commissary for three yen per box.

The base has been used by the US Navy since 1945, and is the largest naval facility in Japan.
Yokosuka now is home to one of the biggest military seaports shared by the United States Navy and the Maritime Self-Defense Force of Japan. The US Navy nuclear powered USS George Washington is currently in its home port at Yokosuka Naval Base. On October 28, 2005, the US Navy announced that in 2008 the USS Kitty Hawk will be replaced by the USS George Washington, a nuclear powered Nimitz class carrier.
A US Navy spokesman said the decision was a mutual agreement between the United States and Japan. Hiroyuki Hosoda, a top spokesman for Japan's government, said, "We believe that the change (of the carriers) will lead to maintaining the solid presence of the U.S. Navy and contribute to keeping Japan's security and international peace into the future." This would be the first time a U.S. nuclear powered ship would be permanently based in Japan.

Yokosuka title=

At the Thai restaurant. This lunch set for 990 yen.

Yokosuka title=

Looks nice but tasted average. Prawn on toast with sesame seed topping - also 990 yen.

Yokosuka title=

Wifeys lunch set also 990 yen.

Yokosuka title=

After lunch its off for a stroll around Verney Park. T'was a really nice warm sunny day.

Yokosuka title=

Some school girls out in the basking sun playing some tunes.

Yokosuka title=

Brolleys are also used when its not raining.

Yokosuka title=

Wide open deck - great for running up n down waving your arms around.

Yokosuka title=

Water was clear n clean.

Yokosuka title=

Rin occasionally jumps of of my pocket and continues to giggle at something.

Yokosuka title=

Testing the macro on the Lumix LX3.

Yokosuka title=

Some folks in the park sketching.

Yokosuka title=

One of the sketches done by an elderly gentleman. I used to do a few doodles when I was a wee lad too - will take some pics of them when I'm back in the UK.

Yokosuka title=

Heading to other parts of Yokosuka and see the girls packing up for the day.

Yokosuka title=

A young lad and his shiny...my music vocab is moo. Trombone?

Yokosuka title=

At Dobuita street. Ask for directions from anybody around the shopping center and they will direct you.
Here you can get some meaty buns. Mmmmm. Meaty Buns.

Yokosuka title=

Dobuita street. According to Wikipedia, A river called Dobu Kawa used to run down here but was an obstacle for vehicles. A military factory provided some huge steel plates to cover up the river this the naming "Dobu-Ita" where "Ita" means a "plate like object."
The plates and river was removed after a while.

These days one can find military goods and souvenirs. I saw a few belts and pouches that would have looked good with stormtrooper armor but wifey stopped me in my tracks ^^;

Yokosuka title=

Some guitars used and new going for 30,000 yen - 65,000 yen.

Yokosuka title=

For those who have wondered about these cats - they are called "Maneki Neko" and are thought to bring good luck to the owner. Wikipedia has an interesting cultural note:-

To Americans and Europeans it may seem as if the Maneki Neko is waving rather than beckoning. This is due to the difference in gestures and body language recognized by Westerners and the Japanese, with Japanese beckoning by holding up the hand, palm out, and repeatedly folding the fingers down and back up, thus the cat's appearance.

Some Maneki Neko made specifically for Western markets will have the cat's paw facing backwards, in a beckoning gesture more familiar to Westerners.

Yokosuka title=

At the end of Dobuita street, we found that there was a festival going on which was filled with stalls.

Yokosuka title=

Dont know what this is called but balls whirl around the water and kids try to catch as many as they can.

Yokosuka title=

This is Kingyo Sukui "Gold fish catching" where folks are given a hoop like object to pale fish out of the water. The hoop has a thin piece of paper which gradually rips after being soaked for too long. Watch the little laddie below - also taken on the Lumix LX3.

Yokosuka title=

Its those obscene chocolate covered bananas again.

Yokosuka title=

After walking for a while, we came across some indoor shopping arcade. Here they had some examples of house prices.
This place was built a few years ago and costs 29,800,000 yen and comes with 200 square meters of land.
Also comes with a view of the sea and Mt Fuji. Rather nice and costs less than half what our house cost - maybe nice for retirement folks but probably difficult for those who need to commute into Tokyo every day for example.

Yokosuka title=

Another place for the same price but nearly half the land space.

Yokosuka title=

This one was built much longer ago back in the 80's.

Yokosuka title=

Walking past a pharmacy and notice another "all surgical masks sold out" sign.

Yokosuka title=

Another "Surgical masks sold out" donned by the mascot character of Sato Pharmaceutical.

Yokosuka title=

Two doggies sporting some of the dog t-shirts available at this stall.

Yokosuka title=

The festival stalls went on forever!

Yokosuka title=

Licensed Pikachu castella snacks? Speaking of Pikachu - the voice actress below.

Yokosuka title=

They taste great but sticking the whole octopus in your mouth initially needs just a wee bit of courage.

Yokosuka title=

"All masks sold out - don't know when new stock gets in."

Yokosuka title=

This girl managed to get this much on a single hoop! Must have peed off the owner of this stall ^^;

Yokosuka title=

Some character goods whistle sweet thingies.

Yokosuka title=

This seems to be the main street in Yokosuka where all the shops and restaurants are.

Yokosuka title=

Apart from catching balls, and fish, one can also catch some little turtles too.

Yokosuka title=

Folks are given something called a "Monaka" which is made from the same stuff as an ice cream cone - once that gets dipped in water to catch the turtles, the Monaka will start to sag and go all sad - I'm sure many of our male dolphin owners can relate to this phenomenon.

Yokosuka title=

This girl is actually an alien who managed to catch all of these!

Yokosuka title=

Our relatives in Malaysia had a couple of these which they just kept in a huge container outside their house and they occasionally threw in some cabbage ^^;

Yokosuka title=

Some military folks could be spotted throughout the day.

Yokosuka title=

Bags of that fluffy sweet stuff that looks like cotton wool - wotsit called?

Yokosuka title=

These photos are called Nama-shashin and usually refer to photos of idols. I used to pick up a load of my favorite idols at Harajuku when I was a wee lad.
I heard that these photos are sold without permission though.

Yokosuka title=

This stall only sold male idol stuff.

Yokosuka title=

I spotted a few temples in Google maps of the Yokosuka area and came across this one near Dobuita street.

Yokosuka title=

Love these stones with kanji written on them. Not sure what they are called though. Most of the ones I've seen are in Onimusha or Ninja Gaiden ^^;
Loved the OP for Onimusha 3 - never finished the game and got stuck teleporting from one room to the other near some well.

Yokosuka title=

Gorgeous scenery to be enjoyed.

Yokosuka title=

A Wikipedia brings up USFJ as United States Forces Japan. Not sure what this comfleacts thing is though and not sure why this place if off limits to them.

Yokosuka title=

Bush recommends Karaoke with his gun of choice.

Yokosuka title=

Yokosuka Navy Burger "TSUNAMI." Must try one the next time I'm in town.

Yokosuka title=

Some Japan-type mugs for you to bring back home.

Yokosuka title=

Some of the locals look like they have a nice time.

Yokosuka title=

Then we pick up the car and drive over to Mikasa park.

Yokosuka title=

Arrival at Mikasa park where the battleship Mikasa is located.

Yokosuka title=

Some Wiki Wisdom below.

Mikasa is a pre-Dreadnought battleship, formerly of the Imperial Japanese Navy, launched in Britain in 1900. She served as the flagship of Admiral Tōgō Heihachirō during the Battle of Tsushima in 1905, as well as several other engagements during the Russo-Japanese War.
Currently, she is preserved as a museum ship at Yokosuka. Mikasa is the last remaining example of a pre-dreadnought battleship anywhere in the world. She was named after Mount Mikasa in Nara, Japan.

Yokosuka title=

More about the Mikasa from Wikipedia.

Shortly after the peace treaty with Russia was signed, Mikasa sank after a fire and magazine explosion took out a section of hull while in harbor at Sasebo on 1905-09-11. The accident killed 339 crewmen, or approximately three times the number killed in combat during the war and injured some 300 more.
The ship settled in 11 metres (36.1 ft) of water. Extensive efforts were made to salvage the ship, and after repeated attempts, she was re-floated on 1906-08-08 and towed to Maizuru Naval Arsenal for repairs.

After two years of repairs which included the replacement of her badly-corroded 12-inch 40-calibre main guns by newer longer and hence much more powerful 12-inch 45-calibre guns, Mikasa was re-commissioned and restored to active service in 1908

Yokosuka title=

Notice the couple at the front of the Mikasa doing the Titanic pose ^^;

Yokosuka title=

Sweet pic of an elderly couple taking a stroll which reminded me of my grandparents.
I watched one of my grandparents die infront of my eyes.
Many of her internal organs failed and they couldn't do anything else for her so the family decided to bring her home from the hospital to die. Never will I forget that day as we watched her struggling to breathe until gave her last breath.

I think that this experience with death is one of the reasons why I truly appreciate and value the short time we.
Even if we don't have our lives cut short, our time will be up before we know it. I encourage all to appreciate life and make the most of it. Dont die with the last thought going through your mind as "if only I..."

Yokosuka title=

Run giggling away at something as usual. Shes adorable. Love the way she can stand without the Nendoroid plastic bases because of her twintails.

Yokosuka title=

More of Mikasa park. What trying to figure out what that arch symbolized but didn't find anything.

Yokosuka title=

Many jet fountains in one corner of the park going off at intervals.

Yokosuka title=

The drive back to Tokyo only took about an hour and with the new highway discounts only cost 400 yen instead of 1,200 yen.
Had a lovely day at Yokosuka - will go back and take along the DSLR. Want to see more of the military ships on that boat cruise.

The little Toyota Noah lookes nice! however, I am very happy with my volvo. It is spacious and I need the room for stuff. Showing cars in shopping malls is very common in the states, but I guess it only started a few years ago.

The cotton stuff is cotton candy! they give so much but I tire of it after only a few bites...

awww festivals looks so fun! Wish I could visit one one day... Not many lively festivals like this one when I visited Japan back in winter... They had those stalls set up in temples and shrines around New Years ,but it just lacked that festival feel to it -_- Most stalls sold charms and religious items.

The mascot character of Sato Pharmaceutical reminds me of the Dora-elephant you posted on Twitter.. *shivers*

Me loves tortoise. They're small, easy to take care of, and don't die easily as far as I know. Cute as well. Low budget too. Would love to have cats/dogs but they have really costly maintainance..

Burgers! Oh burgers.. Luckily local ones are not bad either. Good in both taste and cholesterol. http://bangsar-babe.blogspot.com/2009/03/bangsar-babes-top-5-burgers.html

    I'm really tempted to get myself a Nendoroid Rin now. Twintails.. superior. ^^;

Japan has Gundams now, so maybe that arch's a stargate in disguise?! @.@

I only seen my maternal grandmother. She's 80 years old now. And getting slightly forgetful.. Too bad she doesn't know how to play mahjong. Must get her to watch Saki.

I actually have a list of things I want to do in a 555 book(ancient!). After my big exams this year, I'm gonna try achieving those goals in my free time. Goals include learning photoshop, html, getting a new PC(most prolly by working) etc etc.

They're easy to keep but looking at the amount she has.. I don't know how she'll have the space to keep them unless she has a pond in a yard or something. They grow to quite a size! If she dumps them in a tank chances are few would have died by now.

I might be going to Korea next year and parents said we could stop by Japan if we have time. I would love to go during a festival, but that would mean I need to seriously learn some Japanese.

Psst... the instrument is a tuba! ^^ The years I spent in band class finally prove their worth, ho ho! (aside from making me a none-too-shabby trumpet player, I guess)

Yokosuka looks beautiful! All the greenery 'round the waterfront is very soothing to see; reminds me of Vancouver. The festival looks like it'd be fun to check out, too. I've always wanted to visit one, though largely because of the food, I think. So many different things to try, like the octopi you pointed out. Calamari is yummy, so maybe it's similar? (aside from the texture of all those tentacles)

The Rin-nendo is super adorable! Ahh, all your photos makes me want to buy her, even though I haven't seen Kodomo no Jikan. My wallet shakes its fist at you~!

Not a tuba. The instrument in question is called a Euphonium, or Baritone Horn. While it's shape is reminiscent of an upright Tuba (as opposed to a sousaphone, or Marching Tuba) the tonality it produces is actually tenor in timbre rather than the low bass a tuba puts out. The reason Danny may have attributed it to a trombone is because the trombone also puts out a tenor sounds, albeit a bit more staccato than the euphonium. The trumpet produces an Alto sound, and the soprano coronet will put out a soprano sound obviously. I think a french horn puts out a timbre something in between a trumpet and euphonium.

The sound of a euphonium is somewhat eerie, since it's a tenor range sound, but very mellow sounding rather than the short immediate staccato of a trumpet or trombone. It is very haunting and melodic, and one of my most favorite sounds in the world.

        All right, I admit it, I played the euphonium in high school, and that's why I love it so much and am so knowledgable ^o^;;

My brothers are both brass players (one teaches high school), so I totally get this. It does have a nice sound. Oddly, one prefers mellophone and soprano and the other, contrabass and tuba. Both marched drum corps (SCV.) My best friend was a baritone player throughout high school.

I been around a lot of brass, I guess! :-)

The instrument is a baritone (horn). Lower pitch than a trombone, which is long.
The cotton stuff is cotton candy. Nice sweet and yummy, but can get sticky in the heat.

Ah, I am so nostalgic for festivals and food now: octopus, okonomiyaki, crepes, choco-banana... *drools* Prawn on toast looks interesting. Is that an actual Thai thing or a fusion?

I've never tried the goldfish catching before... sounds fun. Turtles! I used to have my own when I was a child. They were easy to keep as pets. Is it just me or do Asians tend to have fish, turtles and birds more as pets?

So many turtles, what was she going to do with them. I hope they were not meant to be eaten. I keep this one at home, a rather old male. It is Trachemys Scripta Elegans, do not how it is called in English though. They are cute, tiny, and colorful when they are small, but when they get older they lose their colors and the upper part of their shell turns black. And their head too.

ive been waiting for a yokosuka post for so long! thanks! its really great seeing you enjoy what i enjoyed there. it was nice growing up in yokosuka and being in the navy base. Its a very cozy and relaxing town. hopefully you return there! i know sometimes they open up the base to civilians and have an "american-style" fair/festival for visitors. last time i was there they did. try looking it up! have some great american food. thanks again danny!

Thanks for the awesome photo adventure Danny! Yet another place to to add to my places to visit when I get to Japan someday.

There is always at least one or two cars in the mall here. They are usually really expensive sports cars or something though. Fun to look at, scary to think of what it would do to my wallet. O.o

I am surprised to see that the water is so clean for being next to a shipyard.

Ooh, I have 2 little Maneki Neko that my friend gave me after her trip to Japan. They sit right below my monitor...I think they enjoy staring at my swimsuit KOS-MOS figure right next to them though...naughty kitties. @_@

I cheered when that little boy caught the fish lol. :D

How does Winny the Pooh fit in with pikachu and Voltron lol?(on one of the festival banners)

COMFLEACTS is Commander, Fleet Activities - they run the shore facilites and act as the interface between the fleet and the local government. Places usually get placed off limits if there's been trouble with the 'locals'. Usually that means things like clubs that regularly rip off sailors, or neighborhoods where it's easy to get mugged.

Those turtles look like snap'in turtles. Not sure I could eat octopus, what do they taste like without any type of spices or sauces? They are commonly visible in the Anime shows kids lunch boxes.

So the Candy Floss song by SweetS - love like candy floss, is about cotton candy? That stuff has made Dentists millions and ensured they will be in business longer than even they have teeth.

The D.C.1 Anime had a lot about chocolate covered bananas it think or was it D.C.2? (Da Capo). Something to smile about.

A whole lot of photos in those pictures of just the Arashi singing group members. Can recognize them right away.

    Cool pictures Danny. Was nice to be able to see the temples behind the "honch". In indoc, they told us that that whole area behind the honch is off limits due to misbehavior by sailors from long, long ago. Oh, by the way, the "honch" is that area right outside the base (including Dobuita street). At night it becomes a adult playground with lots of drinking and ladies offering you a "messagie". Know that, of course, they will "message" everything. ^_^;

Whenever I get back and North Korea stops lobbing missles all over the place, maybe I can give you a tour of my base and of my destroyer.

IT's good to see that Yokosuka hasn't lost much of it's culture due to the American influence that is around that area. Very interesting to see all the little stalls set up along the road.
Taking pictures of the military, isn't that a bit risky in some countries?
Heh, I feel sorry for the turtles as most get abandoned when they grow too big.
I don't see a spot of bird poop anywhere, what is this! Over there, quite a few places like this face obvious signs of birds coming in.
But whew, this place looks very nice, open area. Ideal place to take a holiday if you're a city dweller. This will be added to my list, doesn't seem too far from the city either.

It depends on where you are; Kyoto has Aoi Matsuri in May and Gion Matsuri in July. Gion Matsuri is more like the type depicted in manga/anime, with games and food, while Aoi Matsuri is a very slow and quiet procession. I don't know much about Tokyo, but Yookoso Japan's website has a good list of matsuri around Japan ^^

    i dont know

That Maneki neko is pretty common in chinese culture as well.

In chinese we call it "fa cai mao" which if directly translated should be.. i have no idea too. Uhm, grow money cat?! Basically it's just a cat for good luck, as the cat hands are moving, in a way like "calling the money in".

I've seen goldfish catching before.. used to do it when I was younger. The terrapin catching one is something new though. I cant seem to catch any though haha.. Kindof sad too, those small kids catching it usually dont know how to care for the fish. You have to get the air pump and everything and some parents dont bother in getting them for their kids and the fish just die after a few days.

Nice festival pics. We almost always have a car show at the local mall after the Auto Show in Detroit.

Danny's photo of the brass instruments seems to be confusing a lot of people. The horn in the corner of the pic is a euphonium or baritone. The difference is slight. Mostly in tone. Baritone is crisp. Euphonium is mellow, almost muted. Both can sound like a trombone. The larger instrument in the middle of the pic is definately a "tuba". Technically referred to as a bass. (Pronunced "base") The instrument is made in various sizes, ranging in tone from a deep BBb flat to an E# sharp. The name "tuba" can also refer to a Sousaphone. That's the brass instrument which circles around the player like a snake, and is easier to march with.

Feel free to flame me offline for being a smartass. LOL!

Yokosuka is _not that far_ from Tokyo. You don't have to drive there either.
You can take any number of trains, from JR, or Tokyu & Keikyu. [Hyperdia (http://grace.hyperdia.com/cgi-english/hyperWeb.cgi?JP_MODE=0) is your friend!]
    Look at these sample fares:
    Shibuya - Yokosuka via JR [¥1,050] 87'
    Shibuya - Yokosukachuo via Toyoku & Keikyu [¥610] 63'

If you are staying at an inexpensive hostel in Asakusa (Hint. Hint. Strong hint.), you can catch a train on the Toei Asakusa line (at Asakusa station) and ride it to Yokosukachuo via Toei & Keikyu lines for ¥950. (66') (Wait for a 'limited express', but it doesn't cost extra, for "Misakiguchi".)

    http://www.facebook.com/TeresaStockroske

I feel you on the grandparent thing. My grandma was dying from lung cancer, and there wasn't much that could be done for her, so she said that she wanted to be at home.
We brought her home, and a few years later, it just got worse to the point that she couldn't even recognize anyone.
I had never seen her pass, but she passed in the middle of the night, and I was woken up by a family member that told me she was gone.

After experiencing that, it has rally made me appreciate life, and what it has in store for me.

You are right, it can be taken from you, when you least expect it.
