Very late with episode 38 of A Week in Tokyo - its been about a month! Making up for it with 85 photos which may balk in Google Reader - if that happens then just click through to the www article or you can get updates by email instead.

Am also interested to hear what loading times of photo articles are for you of late as these days I'm including a load of photos. Also lemme know of any problems you have viewing them.

First photo taken at Tokyo CGM Night Episode 4.

T'was a great evening and you can see other bloggers coverage below. If you feel you should be at Tokyo CGM Night then contact myself or Andrew Shuttleworth. Meetings in Shinagawa with the folks at Net Price who run Tenso.com.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Lunch with a few members on the Tenso.com team.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

More free stuff. This time its the Macross Destroid. Classic design. Could do with some weathering though. How much would you charge me to weather this?

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

My first Doll Show in Hama Matsucho.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

More free samples from sponsors and business partners arrives at the office. The next photo article will be a review of all of these.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Filling up with beverages and snacks for the staff.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

And then I attended my first Dolls Party. Even though I plan to get most of the clothing for my daughters custom made by Chun, I'll still attend to keep in the loop with the latest Dollfie trends and wot not.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

My third sponsored daughter with my forth on the way next week hopefully. The DD Escalayer that you previously saw was for a friend and not me ^^; The Fate wasn't mine either ^^;

I told myself that I would stop at two daughters but have a feeling that I will have two more before the end of the year ^^;

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

And here she is - the lovely Ryomo Shimei.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Ryomo with a sponsored Miko outfit. Speaking of Sponsored stuff - Thanks to Nikon for arranging something for me to pick up this Friday. Not sure which model but I requested one that could take movies ^^; I also asked for a few lenses too. lets see what they come back with.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

This mornings desk. Mio Shima Shima Akiyama.

Japanese readership has been on the increase of late and much of it is due to the Japanese News Items which I'm writing. Japanese folks are particularly interested in what otaku get up to outside of Japan. If you are learning Japanese then you may want to have a read of the Japanese version of dannychoo.com or subscribe to the Japanese RSS feed.

Just a few of the Japanese blogs who regularly pick up on my posts below:-

Like to keep the dust levels in the house down to a minimum - not only because of my asthma but because having dust build up on your girls is not good for them. Leaving dust on them for prolonged periods causes those dusty patches to get oily - not sure why or the science behind that though.

These things on the shelf are duster replacements which I can use for a few weeks before they become a ball of muckyness.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Some sour balls O meat.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Hanging the futon out in the sun is something traditionally done by the Japanese to air the bedding and get rid of any moisture or fleas inside. We do this all the time too. The futon smells soooo good after basking in the hot sun for an afternoon. Do you do this in your neck of the woods too?

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Some garlic bread for b'fast with Kagami.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

At the new katsu place.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Folks having Tenpura for lunch.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

At the new mansion of Steven Nagata - he recently moved into this place situated in the heart of Akihabara.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Steven has views like this from his balcony.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

After shooting the K-ON! Trooper video. Am in the middle of doing the "Dont Say Lazy" vid which should be up soon. Movies saved on an external NAS don't play smoothly in iMove09 so its taking me longer than expected to get the music in sync with the movements.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Was handed these Chai tea packets at a recent event - am hooked! Need to look for some online.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Whenever we past this bridge, our car navigation would read out the name - "Kakinokizakarikkyo" - I like saying this 10 times in a row ^^;

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Wifey wanted to eat Index.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Bowl O sour noodles.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

One nice thing about Japan is that in most cases, if you drop something in the middle of the road, somebody would pick it up and place it nearby on a fence or something so that it does not continue to be trampled on.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

An stroll in our local park.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

A load of dog owners at the park with adorable dogs - I like that little small white one with the jacket on the blue leash - what breed is that?

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

At the local shopping arcade going to get groceries.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Need some more plants for the office/house.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

105 yen for these plants.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Just one of the reasons why I recommend learning Japanese for folks living here.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Some yakiniku for lunch. This set for about 900 yen.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Sticking on the super parts for my Luca Valkyrie. Think I prefer it without.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Got some new apparel for my daughters - Saber wearing a new shirt from Chun. Notice Sabers eye transplant too. Gave her another eye transplant since this photo was taken and now she looks even more adorable.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Outside Shinagawa station.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Hectors meal is unagi?

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

My meal is maguro.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Inside Shinagawa station.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Dark suits everywhere. I purchased a few suits before I came to Japan and wore them only a few times. Have not had the need to wear a suit/shirt/tie for about 8 years now.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Dell Mini 9 with Leopard and E-mobile data stick lock and loaded - off to give a presentation.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Gothloli Saber in the lounge. My forth daughter will probably wear this for a while.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Yukata for my daughters will probably cost more than yukata for a human ^^;

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

BLT lunch with kagami.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

A pachinko parlor gets reviewed and some folks are signing up for some sort of membership.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

At some ramen places, you will find some garlic in a basket at the counter. Crush the garlic with the tool provided and lob it on your ramen.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Newly discovered ramen place in Togoshi Ginza. Love the interior.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

The sign on the far left says "Chikan ni Chui" or "beware of perverts." There are quite a few "Beware O The Pervert" signs over here and was wondering if you had the same?

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Corn n ham pizza. The corn comes out of the other end unscathed.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Blythe promotes Hawaii.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

With the Nikon Tou photo walk group where top Tokyo photographers get together and talk DSLR stuff. Even though this is branded as Nikon, one does not have to be a Nikon user to join.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Bright sunny morning in Shibuya on the way to the bank.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

At the offices of NHK with MR X, Claytonian and Kevin Cooney. Will do a separate news item to talk about what this is all about.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Picked up a USB power adapter for my DSi. Planning a few trips this year and dont want to be DSi-juiceless on the flight. Wanted to do Europe but looks like Korea, Canada, Hong Kong and Singapore. HK and SG in November.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Getitng rid of stuff I don't want so that I can save time and find the stuff that I do want.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

And this is all the stuff that I don't need anymore. Includes my old Kiss and Xacti. The Fon is now useless now that I have my E-mobile data stick. Need to set up a classifieds for folks in Tokyo to sell or exchange stuff.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Salmon Pasta lunch. 900 yen.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Ramen lunch. About 600 yen.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Chicken Katsu for lunch.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Some traditional Japanese sweets.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Bicycle with seats at the back and front for kids. The government tried to ban these once upon a time but mothers lashed back saying that it was difficult to go about daily life without these.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Sushi for dindins.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Spent an evening with Steven Nagata making a voice changer unit for the armor. Had much problems with feedback.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Voice changer complete. Will take closer photos soon.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Lunch at Skylark. 500 yen.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

When I saw this policeman on his motorcycle, I immediately thought about the size of police motorcycles in the US ^^;

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Just got back from CGM Night. Need to hang up the armor, clean and hoover the floor.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Back at the new katsu place. Freshly made and tastes lovely.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Cleaning the lens and sensor. Canon recommend that you bring it to them for cleaning but I decided many moons ago to do it myself. All you need is the lens cleaning liquid/paper. No matter how dust free you try to keep the camera, mechanical dust will always get inside.
How do you deal with the dust on the sensor?

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

New pair of glasses which are currently serving me well.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Getting my weekly dose of World Business Satellite in the lounge. This week they talked about the fashion industry and how costs were being cut.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Evening walk after dindins.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Rin looks worried at the amount of health food surrounding her.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

The health checkup that I had last week which you can read about in A Day in Tokyo 5. These are the containers for my poo samples - the green bag strategically placed to cover the poo wriggling about inside.
Unfortunately I wasn't strategic enough and just noticed I forgot to remove the container of pee from the bottom left of the photo ^^;;;;;;;

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Outside the immigration office in Tokyo which is located in the middle of nowhere - actually in the middle of shipping crates to be precise.
If you are planning to go to the immigration office then I advise to go after lunch. Reason is because they take a break from 12 - 13pm with reduced service meaning that you are basically waiting for them to finish eating.

What are immigration offices like in your region? Are you treated as guests or scum-of-the-earth?

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

For folks who want their feet to look good in an anime way.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Sweet n sour pork for lunch. This dish in Japan rarely comes with pineapples. I was brought up on Sweet n sour pork *with* pineapples in China Town London!

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

How to combat viruses. Use a mask, gargle, wash hands and get plenty of nourishment.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Looks like Kagamin gets another snazzy meal - her previous snazzy meal at the British Ambassadors residence in Tokyo.

A Week in Tokyo 38 title=

Will talk about this event in a separate photo article. Can you guess what it is?

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

I would have to agree, also I am never less than always inspired and motivated whenever I read any of your articles, even if they are just about poo samples.

Also, I know this off topic but there's a bug that always annoys me on this website, I know you use Macs Danny but you probably don't use the Apple Mighty Mouses, when using the scroll wheel, it will allow me to scroll right quite a bit, which always happens when using it to scroll down the page, very minor but always curious why it does this?

Actually, I get this too though I'm not currently using my mighty mouse. I'm on a MacBook and the pad lets me scroll to the right about another page width. It happens with Firefox 3.5b3 but not in Camino, I haven't tried Safari or any other browsers.

A new Haruhi? Looks good, and I'm looking forward to the reviews. The hat on the sign looks so cute, and it's really nice to see people with a nice attitude - I lost my phone whilst drunk a couple of weeks ago, and a guy found it and called up my girlfriend to arrange collection!
As for the 'Beware of perverts' signs, I've never seen one here in the UK, Maybe it's because people would be scared by it? I'm assuming it offers advice, like not travelling alone?

Oh... and the food..... making me hungry, beautiful pics.

Super sized article. Pic load slightly slow, but maybe due to amount of content.

We don't have "beware of pervert" signs here. They usually do their stalking online. We do get local news advisories when a reported sex offender moves into the city tho.

Your pee is too yellow. Drink more water; its good for you.

I'm sure I get very few, if any at all, readers to my blog. Nothing overly inspiring there. Yet I continue to work on it not only as a good source of writing practice, but also because it's kind of therapeutic. I kind of thought the same way when I started and, while I've had problems previously with spam posts that kept me away. I'm hoping to see more readers again as I continue.

All in all, just write about life and what interests you. You never know who you might catch reading it :)

the 85 photos loaded in just under 5 minutes. was a bit slow because I also had my MMORPG running at the same time - I alt-tabbed out to read your latest post.

    photo 26326 - hey, is that a custom-made shirt? do want :)

photo 26345 - Saber looks damn nice in that outfit.

photo 26352 - the dog you referred to looks somewhat like a Jack Russell terrier, but I'm not a doggie expert....

photo 26362 and 26363 - making me very very hungry. I like maguro too.

photo 26371 - I think that tool is a garlic press. I don't use those myself since I can chop and mince well enough with a proper chef's knife.

photo 26373 - no "beware of pervert" signs, but we DO have gender-segregated mass transit systems.

photo 26379 - come to the Philippines some time? with your armor? :)

photo 26406 - is this event of a diplomatic dinner or a sort of gaijin party? kidding~

So many nice pics again. Loading times are no problem, but oftentimes I get black bars covering certain pics + some texts. Bug when loading many pics in Firefox?
I do wonder though, what will be next for your acquisitions....sponsored dogs?

Another week in Tokyo, another lineup of photos.
Doesn't seem this was such an eventful week though, maybe cause i've seen most of the interesting images in other articles. But it makes for a good summary, and a chance to write up a list of foods that i'll be eating when I head to Japan.
I'd pay for Danny Choo pre-used merchandise, like some sort of collector/stalker.
As for beware of pervert signs, non-existant here. Even though Japan is seen as a polite place, it always seems to have something srange about it.
Kakinokizakarikkyo, the new tongue twister for me. Don't know how someone can say that 10 times without making a mistake, very hard.
Question time: Danny, are you able to give the names of the places that you eat at? Just makes it easier to identify what places to go to, or is there a privacy issue with giving their name out?
The loading speed of the site seems to be consistant, nice and fast for me.

I recommend checking out any game shop selling console games. Beware on the prices. Sellers tend to hike up the prices. Make sure that you survey and get the best deal. New console/gaming units accessories tend to be more expensive than the old one. I'm currently using a USB to DS Lite cable to charge my DS Lite. I dunno where my charger goes... =P

Hee, just today I spotted someone had picked up a dropped baby's pacifier and placed it on a near by fence. Usually it's just small items like gloves or scarves or kids shoes that get that treatment though. Sometimes the house or business owners where the item was dropped outside put up found signs though, rather than leave the item there.

Using Opera on Linux. On long photo essays, the RSS preview takes a minute or so to load. The interesting thing is, the article link at the bottom of the preview sortof doesn't work. If I click, I get nothing. It won't highlight for copying into the browser. BUT, if I right click and say "copy link address", it works. Then the browser takes a minute or so to load (I go to other tabs for a bit)

Only complaint on looong photo stacks is that it's hard to keep track of stuff for comments.

WRT pic ID#26339, I'm surprised the city dirt doesn't get all over it. I mean, as the song says:

Despite the fact Riga is quite small, you can find immigration offices in several parts of the city, and depending on to which one you go and also of "in how good mood" the person you get to is, you can get treated like a guest as well as scum-of-the-earth, basically it depends on how lucky you are, well more or less.

    RE: Sensor Cleaning

Each camera is different but most have a cleaning mode. I know for high-end Nikons (D1, D2, D3) you need to purchase an AC adapter which allows you to put the camera into the cleaning mode. You cannot do it with just a battery. The mode basically flips the mirror up and allows access to the sensor. This is different from Bulb mode because there is no electricity being sent to the imaging sensor. If you were in Bulb mode, the sensor would be energized and would actually attract dust.

    >The sign on the far left says "Chikan ni Chui" or "beware of perverts."

The sign in the middle is scarier though. "Don't leave rocks and things on this intersection!... there's been many recent insidents of damage to the road on this intersection... These incidents have been linked to major accidents... etc." You'd think after what happened in Hyogo prefecture a few of years ago they'd have a better strategy to prevent this than just asking the public to report damage to the police... very scary. o.O

Vis-a-vis people airing their futons -- it's long been a cliche that gaijins, especially single, young male ones, never air their futons and when they finally move out the only way of removing their mannen futon is by taking out the tatami mat it's permanently fused to... ^^; I wonder if this has actually happened to anyone...

She said "that the old nasty sword was too heavy and not girly-ish enough to hold any more", then spun her hair to the side and waved her hand through it then looked back like a frozen doll with that smile.

Only problem I've had lately is that the poll doesn't always load right away. On a 10/1 cable modem and a wireless router here. (And I know the wireless can sometimes cause the problems, but it's been happening too often the past few days to be the router.) Still occasionally get the weird gray boxes in SeaMonkey, but I think that's more of data loss and SM just filling the space.
As to the article itself, I always find them interesting. Also makes me kind of sad that I can't afford to go visiting. Time to plan that bank heist....

AH, couldn't wait for this article, thanks Danny. You mantioned policemen, well, here in Canada policemen should be twice as big as normal human. It is the same in the US if Im not mistaken. This whole police business, doesnt really make any difference, at least here, in Canada, because the drugs are still being sold and consumed. One of the reasons I'd like to escape from America, is the popularity of drugs. I recently read that a 14 year old kid was shot dead because of connection with drugs, and it was the 12th homocide this year in our city. Interresting.

Let's jump to something else> Here's a question, if anyone can answer. Would it be reasonable to start learning Japanese "here", and get experience in Japan? Or would it be reasonable to start learning it in Japanese environment?
    Thanks.

    Lets see...

Load time about 7-8 seconds with cable modem, Firefox, and Ubuntu. Typical for this location. don't bother too much from work, our connection there is slower than molasses on Pluto!. ;)

Sleep on a water-bed. Warm in winter, can be turned down in summer, and the Neko-Ojou-sama (sp?) like it to sleep on.

The goth-loli dress REALLY looks good on Saber. That one should be a keeper!

In pic # 26338, what are the noodle thingies called around the edges? I've had it, (and liked) but never found out what it was.

About the cop with the motorcycle, when I once went on a business trip from Hell to Taipei, The one thing that struck me was all the scooters there. Literally, the sidewalk from one intersection to the next had them lined up next to each other. the biggest bike I saw (short of ONE police Harley) was some 150cc Bikes parked behind a police station. At least 50% of the road traffic was scooters 80cc and under.

Just curious, what was the price of the Yukata's in the picture? I can't tell.

Their financial model is pretty interesting -- everything is free, except for job listings in a couple of major cities like New York. Anyone can post, and generally most moderating work is performed by volunteer administrators. The company itself has very few employees. Somehow, the signal-to-noise ratio stays pretty good. I've sold quite a bit of stuff and picked up a lot of useful items, often for free. Always feel like a drug dealer, though, selling my Atari 2600 out of a car trunk in a parking lot ;;.

    Now that you have mentioned so many things, its a big mess in my head, so I think I will just write whatever comes to mind from both articles ^^;

I honestly don't think that I ca last 27 years in this country. My main obsticle is my age (bery tender ^^) and my unsufficient knowledge in Japanese. I plan on stodying the whole summerr vacation and apply for a japanese school with a full scolarship, quite ambitious, but after reading your rticles I believe I can make it!!

I wil go to Japan as soon as possible, first to studdy and then to work. I am really unhappy with what I am studdying and to be honest want to run away from it and follow my passion, and thats what i plan on doing, having in mind it was not my decision to begin with.

    My motgher always sais that one can't always behhappy and we must deal with many hardships that are yett to come, but I dont really believe her. I think that its best to find something you love doing and then fin people that are willing to pay you for doing it ^^;

I may be young in a country I don't know, but love at the same time, so I doubt there will be many hardships that will stop me from going there as soon as possible - no way I am going to wait untill I graduate...

I also can't wait to see all sorts of details you promised to show!

saber looking fabulous as always! d(>_<)b it appears that competition has arrived! having four daughters yearning for affection must be a handful.

It's so unbelieveable how you managed to make a living in Japan and how good you have it now with your own company and the fact that you do what you like... Man I wish you all the best every time I read an "A Wekk.." or "A Day.." Post of yours.

When will I be able to come to Japan knowing I won't have to leave anymore? T_T

Sensor cleaning with the Canon 450D is extremely easy.
Through the menu you can move the mirror out of the way.
Then simply angle the camera with a light in the background to show off any dust.
Then take an earbud and very, very carefully dab the dust particle. Don't wipe and no liquid.
My camera came with a blob of dust on the sensor. Took me some time to build up the courage to get rid of the dust, but found it to be no problem and will do it again with delicate care of course.

BTW I have that exact small black keyboard. IMO this is the best keyboard for the PC ever, and I've been through many, many keyboards. It's robust, and the compact nature makes it the perfect touch typist's keyboard.

I clean the sensor on my Canon Rebel XSi (Kiss 2) myself.

Ohh I see a 60mm EF-S F2.8 Macro USM, I too have this lens and love it for macros and portraits :)

What are the other two lenses?

My guess is the Canon 17-85mm EF-S F/4-5.6 IS USM and the Sigma 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 DC AF OS

Danny, I think the white dog was a Jack Russel Terrier, and the immigration offices in BKK are not the most pleasant place in the world. Being Gaijin in Japan or a Farang in Thailand definitely grants you a level of humility.
