A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Had a health checkup this time last year and wrote about it in the Health Care in Japan article.
"You never know until you ask" has been a motto I've been religiously following and this time asked if I could bring my camera to take pics of the medical equipment used in the tests - the hospital was delighted to have me take photos!

First photo was taken at about 09:30 after arriving at the hospital and getting changed. Just imagine a hospital full of people wearing the same and you get The Island.

Zooming back in time to the beginning of the day. This is where I store my poo samples. Folks living in Japan may have to do this one day or another so I'll give you a tip to save you from making vomiting sounds as you try to fish a sample of your poo.

The green bit of these containers is like a little stick which you are meant to prod your poo with to grab a sample. But poo is a stubborn animal and will try to escape from you when you prod at it. Just like the hedgehog, octopus and skunk, poo may try to protect itself when you reach for it by hurling a piece of undigested corn or spinach at you. If you end up with some spinach or corn in your mouth then just rinse it with some saliva and swallow as its perfectly safe for consumption.

But rather than try prodding at the poo, what you can do is pretend you are playing darts and throw the green stick at the poo. Be careful not to miss or you will have to stick your hand in the pooey pee water to retrieve the dart.

Once you have got a bit of poo on your dart, give the tip a good smell. If it smells like fresh strawberries then you are in luck as poo smelling of strawberries is a delicacy in some parts of the world.
You should retrieve all the poo and freeze dry it and then contact your local candy maker to manufacture your poo as an in-between meal snack. Well done.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Some hints and tips on how to get a sample of your poo. The peanut shaped object is your little friend - the arrows show you the moves of the SDS or Satanic Doppler Slash which is also effective in grabbing a sample.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Need to fill out a questionnaire about my current lifestyle. Questions include:-
-Do you skip breakfast
-Do you eat out often
-Do you smoke
-Do you drink alcohol
-Do you often eat 2 hours before sleeping
-Do you eat faster than others
-Do you have trouble sleeping
-Since the age of 20, has your weight increased by more than 10kg?

Presuming that each item above is 1 point, how many did you score?

I score 1 under "Do you eat out often." I'm guessing that excessive amounts of restaurant food is bad for you.
If you scored 8 then you may want to consult with a health consultant.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

On the way to the hospital. Looks like somebody has been playing too much eroge.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

The latest in the "Do it at home" series asking folks to do work at the office instead of on the trains.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

At Azabu Juban station - closest station to Mita Hospital on the Nanboku line.
Mita Hospital is where I had my health checkup last year and had it there this year too.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

This spot this time last year in the Health Care in Japan photo article. The man is not there anymore.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

The men work with speed and diligence - traffic cones all lined up in no time.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

An ad for Taisei Construction. I looked at the artwork and thought "Makoto Shinkai" and sure enough the CM is made by the same production team as Byosoku 5 Centimeters.
I could only find the low quality version below at youtube but you can see the higher quality but smaller version at Taisei.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

After checking in at the hospital, I'm given my schedule for the morning of all the different tests I'm going to go through:-
-Electrocardiography
-Blood sample
-Height/Weight
-Eyesight
-Listening
-Blood pressure
-Lung/Stomach x-ray
-Barium stomach scan

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Picking up a change of clothing that all patients are required to wear.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

I'm given a key to a locker which containers a smaller locker for precious stuff like rings.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Traditional mirror shot - this time last year.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

The machine thats used to measure blood pressure. This is self service. Stick your arm in the hole and press the button. A receipt will come out after that contains good or bad news for you. I had good news - for now ^^;

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Taking blood samples over here is painless. The nurse sticks a pin in your vein which is attached to a small rubber hose. The hose ends in an adapter which interfaces with these tubes. This enables the nurse to take as many blood samples as needed without sticking more holes in me.

I remember once when having blood taken back in the UK. The nurse missed *three* times - I got nervous and passed out ^^;

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

This is where the listening test is done - a sound proof cell. One is given a pair of headphones and a Sega Saturn joy pad.
The joy pad is left on the floor and one should take the other joy pad with a single button that one should press upon hearing beeps. The beeps are hardly audible. I scored well on this one.
Some Sega Saturn Thunderforce action below.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

This is the machine used to measure ones eye sight. When looking through the holes, a "C" shape will appear facing up down left or right. One uses the joy stick to input the correct answer. There is a button in front of the joy stick which should be pressed if one cant recognize which way the C is facing.

This is done once with and without glasses. I scored badly without glasses. Maybe I'm looking at too much oppai?

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Then its off to be scanned.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

The first scan is the chest and stomach x-ray. Tis over in less than a minute.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Next up is the worst bit of the morning - the barium stomach scan. A bit about Barium taken from Wikipedia below.

Barium is a chemical element. It has the symbol Ba, and atomic number 56. Barium is a soft silvery metallic alkaline earth metal. It is never found in nature in its pure form due to its reactivity with air. Its oxide is historically known as baryta but it reacts with water and carbon dioxide and is not found as a mineral. The most common naturally occurring minerals are the very insoluble barium sulfate, BaSO4 (barite), and barium carbonate, BaCO3 (witherite). Benitoite is a rare gem containing barium.

Metallic barium has few industrial uses, but has been historically used to scavenge air in electronic vacuum tubes. Barium compounds impart a green color to flames and have been used in fireworks. Barium sulfate is used for its heaviness, insolubility, and X-ray opacity. It is used as an insoluble heavy mud-like paste when drilling oil wells, and in purer form, as an X-ray radiocontrast agent for imaging the human gastrointestinal tract. Soluble barium compounds are poisonous due to release of the soluble barium ion, and have been used as rodenticides. New uses for barium continue to be found: it is an essential ingredient in "high temperature" YBCO superconductors.
The little container to the right of the photo is some powder that I drink with some water that generates a ton of gas in the stomach. Upon drinking it, one wants to burp and its difficult to keep in but if one does end up burping then more of it has to be drunk - so try not to burp!

The bigger cup is the barium - has a chalky taste and almost feels like you are drinking paint - not that I've tried paint before.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

And this is the barium stomach scanning table. One gets on it and clings on for dear life as it turns and tips back n forth. You are not strapped in because you are instructed to move around and roll over from time to time.
Sometimes the table would tip backwards with you lying on it which is fun for the first 5 seconds and then starts to get painful trying to hold on to the table.

The bit with the yellow triangle sticker is the camera and the thing sticking out the top is like a robotic arm which extends and pushes your stomach to move around the barium in the stomach. This will leave your stomach hurting for just a bit.

After you are done, you go to the washing basin to rinse your mouth where you will let off embarrassingly loud burps.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

All the tests are done for the morning and I'm at the waiting room to grab a cuppa tea. I'm given some medicine to get rid of the barium. Folks who forgot to take the medicine in the past have had to have operations to remove the barium which starts to solidify over time @.@

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Back in civilian clothes and off to get some lunch.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

By the elevator looking at a poster talking about the dangers of smoking. There is another poster that lists how much it costs to stay per night at the hospital for patients.
The high end room has gone up from 36,750 yen to 39,900 yen while the low end rooms have gone up from 12,600 yen to 13,650 yen per night. Does it cost a bomb to stay in hospital in your neck of the woods?

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

My health checkup is billed directly to my company as part of some company plan for employees over the age of 35. Cant remember how much it costs but will update you.
This bill for 1,200 yen is for a copy of the scans of my stomach and lungs. It's not common knowledge but you can request a copy. I just requested one of each but you can ask for all.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

And this is where one pays for their treatments. Either names or ticket numbers are called out.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Tokyo Tower in the background. Time to look for some food in the area.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Came across a ramen place that was already open for lunch at 11am. Most places open for lunch at 11:30am. Many ramen places have manga placed near the counter or tables. The girl on the cover is Suzanne.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

For folks who want more from their reading experience. These pages have a QR code dotted around the page where you will be able to see more if you scan it with your mobile phone. QR codes are the standard code for mobile devices in Japan.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

An example of what one may be able to see upon scanning the codes.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

1 QR code for oppai and the other QR code for the V-zone. Upon scanning them you are presenting with whats under the foamy white stuff.
They make their money from you downloading the pics on your mobile device and will cost you 80 yen for a peek of each of these areas. Interesting monetization method.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

The better tasting ramen places are usually the ones which are old.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

This set for 700 yen. Tasted lovely.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Men at work.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

There is nothing better than having some Calpis on a hot sunny day in Tokyo.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

At Azabu Juban which has a lot of memories for us. We lived here for a while after coming back from Seattle. Lovely area.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Picking up a ticket. While none of these maps are in English, most of the ticket machines do have an "English button." If you are not sure about how much to pay, just buy the cheapest ticket and pay the extra at your destination.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

The underground stations are filled with mirrors for the many Japanese folks who are conscious about how they look. Do you bother about how you look?

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

While many maps are not in English, signs at the station are.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Interesting cultural thing about the Japanese. If you ask about how packed their train commute is, they will usually mention whether you can sit down or not.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Changing trains. One nice thing about many (not all) stations is that a train change involves just walking to the other side of the platform - no stairs to wrestle with.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Watching K-ON 06. Mio shimapan lurve.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Lots of development going on in this area.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Back at home to look at my scans. The white stuff is the barium and I think that dark area is the gas. One should not eat anything before going for the tests and ends up being very hungry indeed.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

And my chest scans. A report will come back to me after a few weeks so have not been given the lowdown on these scans yet.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Found this on my desk when I arrived at home - a suddenly acquired Miko dress ^^;

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

And this is what my Ryomo looks like in it with more pics in the Miko Ryomo post earlier on. Available at Amazon for 6,825 yen.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Also find something else on my desk!

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Folks who are using the Vika Artur from Ikea can get this plastic drawer from Muji for 800 yen - fits nicely.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Done some spring cleaning today. First up was the bath. Removed the side panel to clean inside.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Was also tidying a load of boxes which I tend to keep these days so that I can give retired figures away.

Folks living in Japan may want to have a peek at the ceiling of the bathroom. For some reason, most electronic wires and stuff end up bundled above the bathroom. There is a panel which can be removed and when done so one will discover a ton of space to use for stocking stuff.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

This is just one side of the bath ceiling compartment currently filled with boxes and wot not.
Everything up here is perfectly dry and we've been using this space since we moved into this house over 3 years ago.

One of the things I miss about living in the UK is an attic to stash stuff.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Cleaning the desk. This is the type of stuff you will find on it of late ^^;

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Some laksa style noodles for dindins.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

Back downstairs in the office to clean up.

A Day in Tokyo 5 title=

And then its in the lounge to watch some The Quiz Show. Hmmmm. Whos that next to the TV?

Heh, I'm in medical school and can practice reading your X ray! You're right, black is gas. I don't have too much experience with radiology though, so probably can't help too much. ^^;; I don't see any major problems that I can recognize.

Augh, I'd be very depressed if I gained 10 kg already since I just turned 20 a few months ago >_. Anyway - not really looking to getting older as it just means that medical exams only get worse and whatnot. It's nice to have a simple yearly checkup that doesn't require much except for a urine sample and a "turn your head and cough".

This is a lot more of an extensive testing than I've gotten for a physical, which basically was height, weight, blood pressure, listen to heart, and "how have you been feeling lately?" Of course I haven't had a checkup since I started college, about 3 years ago.

I noticed you had a Wii Fit, do you use it often? (or your wife). Or have you went with the American trend(not my opinion just what I've read) and used it for a month, then got bored and never touched it again.

I hate it when the nurse or phlebotomist can't find the vein the first time when drawing blood samples.

The first time I had my blood drawn, which was by the insurance company for coverage, the phlebotomist didn't find the vein. Instead of taking it out and sticking me again, she moved the needle in my arm. My eyes widened and my parents had to come and keep me calm.

    >hurling a piece of undigested corn
Ohhh I just happened to be eating corn while reading this..

    Scored 3/7.. why not 8? I'm only 17.. lol. I eat faster than anyone(short breaks at school), eat before sleep(in fact, almost every hour), and I tend to skip breakfast. If a piece of bread w/ peanutbutter is breakfast then I scored 2 ^^;

Gotta love Makoto Shinkai's works. The beautiful skies are his signature(for me).

Haven't got blood tests before.. Friends say it hurts.. and I'm not really good with needles - have some bad memories with them. the blood pressure machine looks interesting enough. Looks like it will equip a Striker unit on your arms.

Burping barium looks yucky.. Having white poo is sucky as well.

Very interesting monetization strategy on the QR code. So that's what the code thing is all about. Saw them on Pocky box IIRC. Is the function for "scanning" of QR code only avail for Japanese phones?

In Malaysia I believe our pack-o-meter for trains is based on how much space do you get to stand on..

      Oh forgot a few things:

      - Love Makoto Shinkai's animation. Voices of A Distant Star is still my all time inspiration in animation. Loved Byosuko 5 Centimeter, although the ending is a bit anti-climatic.

      - Love stewardess or female flight attendants cosplay. In my top 5 most definitely.

      - The inline plug to your earphones to the iTouch looks really cool, what are they Danny?

reminds me of the time i had to go for a checkup when i joined my present company. almost similar, with the containers for urine and poo samples, but barium scan is left out thankfully.

also we get food at the hospital to eat for a after breakfast blood sugar check. so we have two blood checkups done - one before breakfast and the other after breakfast.

japan streets are so clean! amazing people.

I'm not directly involved with the patients...only the samples for diagnostics.

I wanted to be a doctor since I could remember but I'm not good with needles and doubt I could cut it in surgery. My grandparents are retired doctors and they talked me out of it because of the long hours, high insurance rates, and possibility of malpractice. They said there were many other jobs in the science or computer industry that would be better without having so much responsibility. That pretty much made me decide to do something else. I would also have had to take some hematology classes and talking to some friends who took it, they had to draw blood some their classmates every day (>xx)>

I never go to the doctor, I think it'll probably backfire in a bunch of years, but asides being a lazy waste of space and being almost blind without glasses, I shouldn't have any alarming problems.

I don't like hospitals either... they just want to suck you dry from your money.

As always, an interesting entry; me always likes how comfortable must be to use a bicycle in Japan. In Los Angeles you better watch for the cars if you use a bike or you might end up dead.

LoL you too huh? I haven't had a checkup for the longest time. The doctor seemed to have done something that felt inappropriate to me, so I didn't feel like having a checkup anymore after that. It could've been normal procedure, but it felt uncomfortable. Plus they'll just tell me the same thing as back then... "Overweight" >_<

      Aren't optometrists usually separate than the doctors? So you could go for a checkup for that at least ^^;

I have very bad vision, I'm surprised I'm not labeled as "legally blind" yet XD But yes I do get my eyeballs checked every 3-4 years, mostly to get some new glasses. I'm so dumb I keep on staring at screens and books for too long and too near, so every time I go to get new glasses I need a new stronger prescription.

At least you got some decent hospital clothes. Last time I went, I had a thin wrap-around apron type sheet, which you tie closed at the back (and makes you feel like your butt is out in the open)- with underwear made from the same type of fabric that surgical hairnets are made from. >_<

Barium is just plain nasty (especially when you have to drink, like, a litre of it!) You'd think with all their technology - they'd be able to at least put some sort of flavour in it :p

Of course older restaurants are better tasting, they've established themselves and what's kept them for so long is that they are good.

Scored a 5 1/2 haha. Does eating out count if its eating at your work place when it has a deli? Plus I manage the produce section so its all healthy food there.

Odd that I was browsing your articles and came across your check-up from last year, then I log on later in the day and you post your check-up for this year. Just noticed the add on the bottom of the comment box is the Tenga and I also read your one review on their products. (Do ads on your site lean more on the topics I look in order to get better chances of ad clicks?)

I must say the trains over there are VERY clean. I take the train every day back and fourth to school and sometimes it smells like pee... And I wish we had those signs saying to do work stuff at work, not on the train. I get so tried of taking the morning train where I want to open a textbook or notebook and study or pull open my old Japanese language books so I don't get rusty only to hear someone HALF WAY ACROSS the train car yelling into his phone at someone. I don't understand it, why do people have to yell on the phone when on the train? Well, theres my small rant. ^^

Canadian health care system has some good and bad points to it. Good that it is easy to get health care with minimal cost to the patients as long as they have some kinda medical insurance. Bad in that it is easily abused by people who know the loop holes that take advantage of the system costing taxpayers money.

    I skip breakfast
Eat faster than others (gobble everything down)
and last but not least eat before sleeping

I never realized that those phpone scan things were for this kind of stuff.I always thought its some kinda service that allows you to get more information on a product/article and not healthcare material.
I actually think that its funny that such a magazine is offered at a Ramen Place^^

Did the nurse use a regular needle to get some blood samples or did they use the "Mother's Kiss" .

we have something like the QR code here as well, but no ecchi stuufs, just simple advertising. unfortunately it didn't catch on and seems to have disappeared. the reason is people are either too lazy or can't be bothered to scan in the code. i find it troublesome and would rather read whatever u are advertising directly in print.

It's true, eating out too much isn't good for your liver. Last year I did a body check and my doctor told me I have too much fatty liver, this is because I always buy breakfast outside on the way to work. Now I just have those instant made malt for breakfast before I leave, coupled with working out at the gym more often, and my fatty liver level went down drastically a year later.

Blood sampling, tell me about it Danny, its painful sometimes.
Needed to take 5 capsules and first two failed. First one failed on my left arm, second one failed on my right arm. Left arm lost blood though, came flowing out around the needle x_X

Then they whipped out a "Widget" (thats the name of that lil' butterfly connector(?) that they told me), and stuck that on me. Then attached a tube for the blood to travel through to the successful five capsules. :3 Not much pain.

    Anyways, the branium stuff looks dangerous x_x;

I'm surprised that it's possible to do that kind of checkup, and that people do them. I mean, wouldn't it only cost you money? Why would you go to the doctor if you're not experiencing any problems? I can understand if you have some dicease or whatever in you family, of course you would do checkups for that. But to go and do all that, when you're feeling perfectly healthy... I don't see any point. And I also live in Sweden, where health care is practically free, so in theory I can go to the doctor as much as I want. Even so, I don't see the point of going if I'm not sick.

Also, I might be wrong, but it looked like the figure boxes where kept in the ccieling of the bathroom. Won't vaporated water enter those areas and destroy the boxes?

I scored a 2. Because in all fairness, I do not like breakfast as it tends to make me feel bloated and the like a moment after I eat certain breakfast-based things.

That, and I did gain more than 10 kg since I was 20. Then again, I am 32 and dropped 30 pounds while living in San Francisco for 2 months (art school bit) when I was 20.

Also, Danny, like the smile in the first pic. It reminds me of the smile I want when a cute female nurse offers me a spong... erm... I'll just leave it at that. X3

I haven't had a physical in many a year (No insurance + poor + unemployed = no non-emergency medical treatments.) My last one, however, the only place they didn't go a scanning was ye old solid waste disposal chute. You'd think one x-ray was enough, but no. They zapped my head, torso, dolphin, legs, feet, arms, along with some weird ear-canal probe with an endoscope on it. All because I was 17 and hadn't had a physical in 6 years. No barium, but iodine to check some of my glands.

Let' see, I only got 1 point for difficulty sleeping, it takes me over 20 min to fall asleep and any kind of noise wakes me up easily. Since I was 20 y/o I've only gained 5 kg.

I haven't got a health checkup in a long while and don't know how much it would cost now. The last time I did, it was one of the requirements to enter the college I went to and found out my blood type was A+, I didn't knew before >.< As far as I remember nurses never miss the vein when drawing blood from me, all my blood vessels stick out lol.

As for how much it cost to stay in a hospital in my country. Last year a friend had surgery to remove a hiatal hernia on a high-end hospital. Everything was covered by his health insurance, but if he had to pay for it, it'd have been around $8,000 usd for the surgery and $300 for each night stay. On the other hand my grandpa suffered a stroke and stayed for a week in a public hospital and paid around $10/night.

Ughghghghghg maybe I don't want to think about it. T_T

Wow, these medical exams are quite something, sounds more than a "check up" to me. My yearly visit to the doctor takes about 10-15 min (+ 1 hour or so waiting in the waiting room). 10-15 min is pretty standard here from what I've seen, unless they would find something unusual then do more testing, or refer you to a specialist for further testing. I don't know about private clinics though, but those are for rich people that don't need to save up precious otaku spending money.

aaaa i have always hate health check ups since i was a kid, i was a scary cat as well but had no other choice when i got sick >.<. I remember when i got really sick and had to go everyday to take blood samples, once a lady missed twice (one in each arm) and had to try it again in my right arm ^^;; Hearing about the bradium(?) in the stomach gave me chills, i would defitnely skip that.

    A complete medical checkup.
I am fascinated with how medical advanced are in Japan. I mean, the self-automatic blood pressure machine, its interesting. Near hear, all medical procedures are still conducted in a traditional way.
I had done my checkup last year, and I dont like all the medical tests you have to been through. I never have done the Barium test, either (Didnt know of that)..

I hope that stomach scan is important, because I feel it to be a little bit unnecessary to go through that whole drinking-then-removing-barium business if they're just looking for something minor. Also...I don't really much like the thought of drinking paint. lol.

I don't go to my doctor for regular check ups, as I only go when needed. I'm still kind of scared around needles though I'm trying to ignore those sharp metal things, especially if I continue being in a pre-nursing major. Recently I went to the doctors because i got really sick and thought (the worst possible scenario) that I had swine flu. As living here in SF, I wasn't too worried until we started getting reports that it was popping up around the bay area. During the visit they said that I probably had sinus infection though I thought it was flu. They took a swab test and found out I did have flu. I know well enough that those antibiotics that they prescribed did nothing for the flu, as flu is a viral infection. Since about two weeks ago when I got sick and had massive dizziness, headaches, nausea, fatigue, and cough, I still have the cough and for some reason I don't think I have my full senses of smell and taste. I'm not sure if it is a side effect of the medicine I don't think helped or because of the flu.

Worst part is that my flu came during my final weeks of freshmen year here at SFSU. Messed me up badly for my missed classes.

I've been living in Japan for a year and a half, and I've seen those QR phone scan codes many times, without ever knowing or wondering what they were. Now I know! Thank you!
It does make me wonder just how many other interesting/unique things there are that I see every day, and take for granted, and have never properly noticed or understood, since I can't read much Japanese.

And at your suggestion I took a look at my bathroom ceiling, and sure enough there was a panel I could pull off. But mine was a bit full of wires and insulation and stuff... not much space to confidently store anything, I think.

We have these, although much lower quality at our local drug mart. They always give me a false reading. Once I got 220/90 and told the pharmacist. She immediately told me to sit down and told her assistant to get a manual bp monitor. She smartly checked it twice and the readings were relatively normal. She apologized for alarming me and said that the machine must be on the fritz again. So be warned when using these things, you could get a bit of a shock.
