Didn't manage to go to the Winter Dolls Party but made sure that I attended the one last Tuesday.
Also known as Dollpa, this event is held a few times a year in Tokyo and Kyoto by Volks where the main theme of the show is their flagship product - Dollfie.

The first photo is taken at the Ocha-kai space where Dollfie owners bring along their sons and daughters to display on the tables while sipping some tea over a bento - will cover this bit in the next report.

Dolls Party title=

On the 5th of May, there was not 1, 2 but 3 otaku related events - Comitia (doujin), Dream Party (maids and figures) and the Dollpa. I only bothered to enter the Dollpa halls which took me from 10am to 3pm to finish - no break included.

Dolls Party title=

The entrance of Dollpa at the East 5 and 6 halls of Tokyo Big Sight.

Dolls Party title=

Many doll parent comrades lined up since about 6AM for a chance to adopt a new daughter or son. The Dollfies are so popular that they need to have a raffle - too much demand and not enough supply.
Folks I met up with were Cut A News, Zareds, Hisahi, Moeyo.com, Suuji and Taitan - check out their sites for more from Dollpa.

Dolls Party title=

At the Volks stands. Mikuru in Little Busters gear.
I still am trying to figure out how some eroge becomes much popular and franchised than others.

Dolls Party title=

Aoi-chan does Little Busters too.

Dolls Party title=

Yukino does Clannad.

Dolls Party title=

More pics of Fate in the Dollfie Fate T Harlaown post.

Dolls Party title=

More pics of Nanoha also in the Dollfie Fate T Harlaown post.

Dolls Party title=

Gorgeous Miko style outfit for Haruhi.

Dolls Party title=

I think this is Feena.

Dolls Party title=

Feena?

Dolls Party title=

Maid Tamaki.

Dolls Party title=

Komaki. I think this outfit is available on the Volks store.

Dolls Party title=

Ryomo in her default gear.

Dolls Party title=

Kanu in her China dress.

Dolls Party title=

Thought this illustration of Aoi was cute.

Dolls Party title=

Saber Alter.

Dolls Party title=

Illya?

Dolls Party title=

Rin Tosaka.

Dolls Party title=

Default Saber with extra accessories.

Dolls Party title=

The main stage where events were held throughout the day. Much of it was announcing lottery and auction winners. Heard items going for up to about 450,000 yen.

They also had announcements in English, Korean and Chinese as there were quite a few gaijin folks too.

Dolls Party title=

Was a really relaxed event with folks sitting about to chat about their young ones and shopping going on at the other end of the hall.

Dolls Party title=

Dont know who this is - Super Dollfie I think.

Dolls Party title=

Some really nice looking holsters with guns - 18,000 yen price tag prevented me from buying.

Dolls Party title=

Gunslinger Girl style?

Dolls Party title=

Erika Sendo military style.

Dolls Party title=

Another unfamiliar Super Dollfie.

Dolls Party title=

Oppai!

Dolls Party title=

For our loli fans.

Dolls Party title=

Nono Gunbuster outfit.

Dolls Party title=

Asuka looks completely different here. 5,000 yen for this outfit.

Dolls Party title=

Saber looks sweet with any hairstyle of outfit. Am so glad to have her ^^

Dolls Party title=

Was considering adopting Kanu for my next daughter...

Dolls Party title=

...but ended up adopting Ryomo instead - shes on the right. Find her face much sweeter. Her lace outfit here going for 3,500 yen.

Dolls Party title=

Some traditional stuff.

Dolls Party title=

Wots his name from Macross Frontier.

Dolls Party title=

Alto gear.

Dolls Party title=

Ranka Lee cosplay.

Dolls Party title=

Sheryl cosplay.

Dolls Party title=

Erika Sendo. Want that wig.

Dolls Party title=

For those who don't mind their daughters wearing just that little bit less.

Dolls Party title=

Traditional gothic fusion dresses - 8,000 yen.

Dolls Party title=

Give your daughter a nuns uniform so that you can confess to her.

Dolls Party title=

Very sweet doctor cosplay. Looks like a custom head.

Dolls Party title=

Would not mind being beaten by her nunchucks.

Dolls Party title=

Wots her name from Queens Blade.

Dolls Party title=

Erika Sendo with an M bust dress.

Dolls Party title=

I think this is Kotori.

Dolls Party title=

Komaki-chan.

Dolls Party title=

At the moment my girls have resin anime eyes. Not quite ready for the glass type yet.

Dolls Party title=

There were quite a few Chinese and Korean dealers too - this was on the desk of a Chinese dealer.

Dolls Party title=

Some China dresses for both M and L busts.

Dolls Party title=

They also had a "beauty salon" which seemed more like a clinic where experts at Volks would help owners tighten up the string inside their dolls and attend to other blemishes and illnesses. Dollfie Dreams have a plastic frame so don't end up with the loose elastic syndrome - but do get loose joint syndrome.

I notice that doll owners treat their dolls how one would treat their human children. They buy clothes and accessories, come their hair, dress them up and what have you.
I saw many folks carrying, patting and stroking their dolls as they walked around the event. There is something about dolls which make you look at them differently than just a figure or an ornament. Was trying to figure out why and maybe its because of the hair, eyes or clothes that make them look closer to humans?

Whatever it is, I do find myself handling my daughters with much more care than a figure and treat them as if they have a spirit inside them - like they were really alive I guess ^^;

One example is where I'm dressing or positioning one of my daughters and the wig falls off - I would say "sorry!"
Asked a few other doll owners and they say the same ^^;

Dolls Party title=

Darn. Should have picked up this custom head for 8,000 yen. Folks who are thinking of adoption can also go for the option of finding parts at a show. At the previous Doll Show and at Dollpa, I saw Dollfie bodies with M or L busts selling for about between 12,000 yen and 18,000 yen. You can then pick up a custom head and then a wig for about 3,500 yen. I'm not partial about the licensed character outfits and would rather have my girls wear casual clothes.

Dolls Party title=

While some doll parents cherish and love their young ones, some parents prefer to give their sons or daughters a different kind of love. The whips and body straps n chains were available for purchase.

Dolls Party title=

Bumped into a Dollfie parent carrying his daughter around. Tis very common at doll shows. Some carried their daughters over their shoulder and some even had special stands to carry them around in.

Dolls Party title=

Kotori as Rin.

Dolls Party title=

Nanoha.

Dolls Party title=

The footwear on sale was quite reasonable - 2,500 yen for any pair.

Dolls Party title=

Not sure what style this is.

Dolls Party title=

Another sweet looking Saber.

Dolls Party title=

This place lets you bring your own cloth and they will make one of these traditional garnments for you.

Dolls Party title=

No idea what these are.

Dolls Party title=

Some more gorgeous dresses.

Dolls Party title=

Nice outfit. Not sure which character.

Dolls Party title=

Index cosplay.

Dolls Party title=

Sheryl cosplay.

Dolls Party title=

Mind is drawing a blank - Macross Frontier.

Dolls Party title=

Just like the Wonfes, dealers are allowed to sell licensed costumes. Unless they have a license agreement directly with the license holder, the dealer can only sell these outfits at shows like Dollpa or Wonfes.

Dolls Party title=

Looks like another custom head.

Dolls Party title=

Yukino with M bust.

Dolls Party title=

This was on the table with the other licensed stuff. Not sure which character.

Dolls Party title=

Nice punk gear.

Dolls Party title=

They had these fluffy ears on sale for folks who like that Strike Witches look.

Dolls Party title=

This is what the inside of a Dollfie Dream looks like. The black bit is a custom neck joint which allows for more movement.

Dolls Party title=

Was considering this bow n arrow set for a while - 3,000 yen.

Dolls Party title=

More traditional garnments.

Dolls Party title=

For the loli fans.

Dolls Party title=

More Clannad gear.

Dolls Party title=

Another Super Dollfie.

Dolls Party title=

The Vocaloid girls get a ride on the maguro.

Dolls Party title=

Some miniature teriyaki chicken, manga and crisps.

Dolls Party title=

And its time for some curry at Big Sight before heading back in the rain. The best part from the Dollpa is the tea space where a lot of crazy shenanigans go on - coming up next.

I think its NicoNicoDouga - the home to unlimited MADness and fandom ^^ They did a great job on popularizing Miku.

Military style Erika Sendo? Seems a bit off to me.. The one in image ID#26160 looks very nice though ^^

Amazing coverage on the Dollpa, I enjoyed this a lot!

image ID#26130 looks like Estel Fresia
image ID#26146 looks like Feena (Feena has dark green eyebrows, kinda weird, but that's how it is...)
Just a note here, that Estel, Feena and Erika have the same head mold, if you were wondering why they are so similar ^_^ Only the make-up paint is different.

image ID#26185 is Mirai, she's a Volks original character (not from game or anime)

"Give your daughter a nuns uniform so that you can confess to her." hahaha that was too funny XD

I am contemplating about getting Feena DD, but I am not confident about her wig though nor do I think her face looks close enough to the original character. Sad but neither Estel or Feena could make their way to my family unless they have a serious make over.

My favorite out of those was the first Goth Saber you had. I also liked the Melona one, but her chest looks kinda weird. As for loli dollfies, they kinda remind me of the dolls in the horror movies, and the Kagamine Rin cosplay dollfie wasn't great either.

BUT my favorite of all the pictures was the one with the Kagami figma. I still haven't been able to get one despite her being my favorite Lucky Star character (I love tsundere).

In regards to why some series get franchised quicker and in more medium, you might take a look at the scenario or character development behind the eroge or love simulation game. This generates more buzz for the series which attracts deals for publications or anime and those mediums can attract a fanbase which may not be inclined to play the original game. Then this can further branch off in to other mediums and fanbases.

I think Haruhi is a good example as it began as a light novel but branched into manga and anime and it could be argued that the decisions the animation studio took allowed it to gain popularity in music circles and so on.

Actually, just thought of a better example: the Touhou series.
Even though the writing is nonsensical and the character development is mostly done through some fan consciousness, it went from a simple doujin vertical shooter to a self propagating popularity machine over the course several years. Doujinshi artists create story and use flexible character backgrounds to attract paper medium fans and music artists remix the well done original sound track to attract more music fans. At some point people who can branch out into other areas do so and you get your fan made animations and even a fan made anime episode.

How much a series clicks with fans opens lots of doors. Might make for an interesting graduate thesis.

I think why owners do those stuff is because they really do love their dolls. Some figurine collectors could look at awe in their collection for a long time and even play with them happily. Sort of that idea applies to Dollfie owners too.

I've been commenting on a few Dollfie posts because a Dollfie is on my wish list, but I really seriously cannot afford one right now :( I can dream, anyway, and these posts are often the next best thing. I love how you take care of your daughters so well.

image 26129 - seriously pretty get-up for Haruhi. wish I could sew like that.

image 26137 - not really into gothloli but this outfit is amazingly beautiful.

    image 26139 - pretty bonnet.

image 26140 - nice crown and cape.

image 26155 - and another lovely kimono outfit. I'm a sucker for these things.

    image 26163 - I shouldn't be saying this, but I love this nun's outfit.

    image 26165 - what a lovely qipao :)

image 26175 - the detail that goes into clothes and accessories of this scale is amazing. again, I wish I had some talent at sewing. I mean, I CAN wield needle and thread, but people who make stuff like these are the pros.

image 26180 - the outfit has a faintly MMORPG feel about it.

image 26182 - wow. just, wow.

    image 26195 - ooh kemonomimi!

image 26198 - hakamas are so pretty.

image 26203 - wow, more of those miniature food items!

"The best part from the Dollpa is the tea space where a lot of crazy shenanigans go on - coming up next." - looking forward to this!

The outfit Komaki wore in picture image ID#26133 really reminded me of Spice and Wolf, which now makes me want to have a Horo themed Dolfie. Anyone know if something like this is available?
Saber always looks good whether alter or normal. The original outfit + accessories image looks very nice maybe could have added a crown.
Male dolls always look strange to me, not sure.
Are dolls spirited? Of course! I'm sure most people have habits of talking to objects which resemble humans, such as sorry or there there etc.
The building that events are held in always amazes me every time I see images of it, I normally see it in pictures of comiket.
The doll in the first image with the red coat and guitar looks very nice, I bet the owner spent alot of time preparing her.

I really wish I coulf attend a dollpa, the Japanese and Americans are so lucky. Volks don't do English or European events yet.

I want to make a custom dollfie dream for my next doll, the limited dolls are nice, but you can't beat the satisfaction of a custom creation, unique to you.

Ooh, wondering when Danny went over to the DOLL side. (^.^)

I have to admit that I love these. I accept the fact that I love some of these dolls. Perhaps it is the fact that they are just so expensive that's making me bash them. Anyways, will have to get ONE. Just one in my Otaku Career.

Just to answer the poll question, I voted possibly. My reason being that I’m not one of these people who make up complicated back stories and personalities for my dolls and I don't treat them like children or real people. However I do name them and every doll does have a certain prescience, unique to itself so it’s very easy to get attached to them. It’s really easy to get attached to something that has such human features after all.

Huh, a Luka dollfie. Didn't expect that coming in.

I second your sentiments on the casual outfits, though I pretty much like all the "normal"-ish ones - including the kimono ones, which aren't exactly casual. Some licensed ones look great, though - the original Saber with the cape, for example, and I love the Koihime Musou Aisha/Kanu Unchou outfit. Might just be my preference for the character showing through though.

Thanks for the report! I'd like to attend a Dolpa someday, so I liked seeing pictures and your explanation about it.

By the way, the doll you didn't know the model is Nana Sweet Dream (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dannychoo/3509073359/sizes/o/) I know it because I have one at home. It's one of the two sleeping versions that exist of the F-01 head mold, also known as the four sisters mold ( Standard SD Nana, Sara and Megu ).

It's incredible how many people are involved in the superdollfie hobby in Japan. The market is incredibly big! @_@ so many people makes and sells its own products and accessories. It must be wonderful being shopping for that, in a dolpa.

I'm looking forward to the next installment! Everytime I see these articles and how many people are like "Yey dolfies!" I remember not too long ago (I believe it was around last year) many would never have considered getting a dolfie, myself included. The price is the biggest turn off, but when I see them posed in these pictures, wearing their beautiful clothes, I gotta say I get lured in .-. If I ever do get a dolfie, I think I would treat them like how some do, gently and carefully. That's so cute that you say sorry if you do something like drop their wig XD I see myself doing the same thing with some of my own personal items!

I so wanted to buy one of the limited dolls from this Dollpa, it was Ryoya(the male doll). But... he's SOOO expensive. I think it's because he comes with a lot of clothes(and I don't even like them). He's around 1,300.00 US dollars. Way out of my reach. ;_; But he's so pretty... Oh, and he's lottery, so even if I did "order" him I still might not have gotten him either...

Noticed there weren't to many pics of male dolls.

Still waiting on a must have female doll too, seriously looking in to it... but have to save up more money first.

I was at Dolls Party 21 too! Didn't bump into you though, Danny ;p
I should have said/emailed it before, but I was 7 days based in a hotel in Kyoto without internet connection...
I liked it very much, and I'm thinking of getting a medium sized doll, but not sure yet though which one...

I did go to the other 2 convention (which I didn't know about). Comitia was nice to actually have been to a doujinshi market at last (but didn't bay anything though). Maybe Comiket has better selection...
And Dream Party was not much I though, not many interesting stuff, and also no free bags as at Tokyo Anime Fair. Got one big one that I paid 1000yen for.

Oh so all the sellers have to deal with the full licensed outfit item rules just like pictures from a show or the videos. That explains why other places that I have looked at don't have the full fledged Anime characters I was looking for and pretty much why the Volks lottery exists. Well now I know thanks Danny! That was also the best view of what kind of things are now at one of the parties yet. They are really something, each and every one. The one picture with all the police ribbons on it looked like they worried someone was going to 'kid-nap' them.

Saber caught my breath, took it away and didn't give it to me for 7 minutes or so. Simply astownding! I remember trying to fins Saber/Saber Atraxia Dollfie with a price bellow 1,500 USD. Now I have givven up hope at most, with only a small glimmer left - Danny's Classifides. I really hope I can get a good bargain here, ofcourse I am not naive as you might think ^^; This doll I simply adore and I promise I will take good care of her! (I will soon post the actual thread, so that you won't thin kI'm selfish)

I loved the head on this one. Along with one other custom head, it amazed me. The hair style is simply adorable - Love it!

I loved the eyes on this one! They are great! Can any of you comrades identify them for me? Along with an order link please.

Is the poll a joke? Obviously there is nothing in them but cloth and plastic, unless you're doing some Child's Play style voodoo and attaching a soul to them. And I noticed, yet again, that I could purchase lifesize versions of many of these accessories for less money! Insane when you consider someone may have poured thousands of dollars into this. I suppose folks with lots of money don't notice, but a poor man like myself finds it to be crazy.

I wish you would have pooped into the other events. No recent in depth figure coverage, Gundam is non existent here anymore (outside member news), and a drastic increase in something I have no interest in. /cry
It is great others have found a place to share their...interests in dolls, but I feel like the site is shifting in a direction that will lead to me popping in from time to time, rather than daily The last article for figures was March 24, before that there was one covering a single figure back in February. I'm not angry over it, and I understand the blog is built around Danny's interests not mine, but I still wanted to say it.

Too expensive a hobby for me I'm afraid. It's a steep curve since the doll itself costs quite a bit of money.

As for what gets popular, it's really weird. It's really surprising that Little Busters doesn't have an anime adaptation yet.

Haha, I know exactly what you mean, what with apologizing to the dolls if you drop their wig or somethin'. I tend to do that with all my toys, both figures and plush dolls alike; apologize for dropping them, berate them for not posing right, tell them to watch out for the cat that loves to knock them over... I've always had this odd habit of personifying inanimate objects that way, though ^^; Do the same with my gaming consoles, too! (and who hasn't backtalked a malfunctioning computer, right?)

Some of those outfits are gorgeous! Wish they were avaliable in human-sized variety, too. And it's nice to see that male dollfies do exist, even though the female population is understandably way higher. Seems the girls have a larger amount of stylish outfits avaliable.

The more I read these articles, the more I appreciate how cool these dolls are. I think the attention to detail and dedication of the collectors is quite admirable. I'd love to attend one of these events.

I was also thinking about the price tags on the items for sale. My first thought was these were a bit expensive, but the more I pay attention to the incredible high-quality of these products, the more think it's actually quite reasonable.

These are very lovingly made items created by hand, and like a fine piece of original art, these deserve to cost what they do. I might have to break down and take the plunge!

The blank DDs are cheaper at Dollpa? Interesting and noted.

The question about dolls having a spirit makes me think about a quote from the Velveteen Rabbit, where one toy--a rocking horse I think--tells the rabbit that toys become "real" when they've been loved almost to the point of disintigration. ^^; I wouldn't take to that extreme, but I do feel that any life or spirit that dolls, plushies, figmas, or any other toy might have comes directly from the affections and interpretations to the owner. If the owner has put love, care, and personality into them, then yes, they do have spirit because they've acquired one. But if they're merely displayed and nothing more, then they don't.

    Of course, by that logic even my figmas have spirit to them, as well as some stuffed animals I've had since I was little. If I were to get a doll, I'm sure she'd end up with plenty of spirit in her. ^^;

Augh, I hate dolfie. I mean, how come people can stand to being watched by a doll when they are sleep at their home, their room?. I mean, figure and alike are fine but doll as dolfie? It give me a creepy thing just to be stare by dolfie (And it remind me of that Chucky or whatsoever)

Oh, and about doll spirited, I think it possible because there's so many unknown world that we can't reach it or sees it. So there's a possibility it can be possesed, maybe ;D

I just saw a Rin going on auction currently for 61,000 yen... that's well over 6 Million rupiahs! I can go to Mahakam over 20 times with that kind of money... LOL!

Dolls look human, I guess thats why doll owners treat them with respect. Not only that, by giving them a name or placing your own feelings/property into one, gives them something special like some sort of life. You can name a stone Yamada (yeah, I have and it sits outside of the window) and it'll feel sort of special.

Its all phychological. Oh brains work so ... weird and beautiful.

Man, that Saber Alter Dollfie is a do want. :3

I have to say, I'm really excited that you've broken out into the Dollfie world haha. xD
It's really interesting to read your thoughts on the hobby and see how you take care of your girls! You're so lucky to be living in Japan where they have so many Doll exhibitions, I'm rather envious of you. ^^

Dollpa looks like a lot of fun! So many pretty dolls and clothes on display. I don't understand how you can hold back from buying all those accessories. You have some amazing self-control! Do those only fit Volks dolls or do you think they could also fit other brands as well?

I myself have a boy of my own. Not a Volks however, he's a Luts Delf from http://eluts.com. I've never really been into the cartooney look of Dollfie Dream but thanks to you, I'm starting to like them a bit.

Can't wait to see part 2!

Hey thought id have a little fun and play the identification game! See how much i know from being in the BJD hobby for so long. hopefully this helps out with the resin kind of Super dollfies!

image ID#26143 = Sweet Dreams F-01. Volks SD10 (probably) four sisters head.

image ID#26147 = one of the old FCS heads no longer made, but dont remember the number. also an SD10 or 13 Volks head.

image ID#26149 = I believe this is Volks Yo-sd meagu. not entirely sure...it might be sarah

image ID#26164 = custom faceup...but this is one of the two option heads you can buy from volks for the DD2's. I think this is 02 or 03

image ID#26170 = Im pretty sure this is Jun Tachibana...a highly sought after sd13 girl. O.O

    image ID#26171 = SD10 Nono. a sassy cutie! i love my Nono!

image ID#26174 = You should have bout it! its soooo cute!!!

image ID#26183 = this looks like a dealers collection of Volks YO-SD's! lets see if i can ID them all! XD From top to bottom, left to right: Linn, Tinatsu/chinatsu, mimi or nono (its hard to tell from the angle.) Kuuta, and Hina Ichigo!

image ID#26194 = SD10 Kurumi. another highley sought after and extremely cute one!

image ID#26198 = from bottom on up! Not sure who the sleeping one is, the one in the middle is an MSD Midori, Sweet dream (or SWD) nono, and i believe its another sweet dream Nono.

image ID#26201 = I believe this is a sd13 Yugiri with a custom faceup! very cute...i could be wrong though.

And just a random FYI, all volks head have a number and a mold name for each size doll. so for example: Mimi is f-13. :D

Also FCS is the program that volks runs were you can customize your dollfie from head to toe. You chose the head (this is where the number comes in handy versus the mold name.), body, hands, feet, eyes, wig, make up and outfit. It stands for Full Choice System! but its only available in Japan or through agents who will do it for you for a fee.

Yaaaay fun! hope this is helpful to someone! :3

    Hi Danny,

I've been reading alot of stuff on DD on your site, and I'm thinking of finally getting myself one. Love to get Saber but I couldn't find any auction site that sells it. Amazing coverage on the event. I'm curious to know is how/where do we get those amazing clothing or weapon (e.g the bow or the amazing looking riffle you have for one of your daughter). Tried google and come back nothing.

is there any online store that sells those cool accessories for the Dollfie Dream. In particular dress that would also fit Kanu because I might able to get her. Thanks.
