Japan Self Defense

Looks like a scan from a book showing ladies how they should defend themselves in the event of an attack from behind.
Love the Drill Knee of Doom in number 4 on the right page and check that Sonic Slap in number 4 on the left page.

Which brings me to a question - how many physical fights have you been in before? When I was a wee lad (early teens probably), I got into a few fights - all of them involved me loosing ^^; The worst one was when I was rushed by a horde of people - was having a brawl with somebody who used to be my best friend who told his comrades to rush me if he started to loose. He indeed started to loose but before I knew it I was on the floor being kicked all over the place ^^;

Self defense image from suiseisekisuisui who also have a useful diagram of how to draw anime eyes in under a minute.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

Ouch those drawings look so detailingly painful XD Kinda look like City Hunter art too.

Hmm... I've been in a couple of fights... once ended up in a draw because someone stopped us in the middle who was a good friend. And the other times I guess I was angry enough that they didn't bother me again. I was a crybaby back then too, so if I didn't fight I'd cry. But I remember being so angry that after it passes, I started to cry for losing it...

One day I got ganged by 5 people. They were trying to steal my PSP so I just hung to it and let myself beat, saving my PSP ^^. After 1 min of hitting me nonstop they gave up as I was not letting go of the PSP(I am pretty strong if I may say but I decided to save my PSP instead of fighting with them, which I think was a wise thing to do :p). The other fights were when I was about 8-10 years old, would be on bad terms with 2 guy and they would gang up on me but I would win lol. I actually had casual friendly fights and I actually got a friend because he fought with me and we then magically became friend(he was a tall big black guy and from then got some other friends with him ^^). I never fight unless for fun or when I think it would be good to.

If I remember correctly got into 2 fights. One fight I ended up having flashes of consequences and got injured, ended up getting really mad and punched the guy in the head a few times really hard. Another got hit on the head and the physical education teach came and stopped so i wasn't able to do anything back. Bad times though for as I remember the consequences I got from fighting was dad kicking me ass from earth, to heaven, hell, and back. And in all asian cultures(I hope so) no hitting papa back or you will die, actually you're never supposed to go up against your papa in anyway, respect the man who gave life to you. Hmmm...I remember your papa is supposed to give you a real beating for anything bad that you do. Even though me papa kicked me ass from when I was very little I still grew up being a fine gentlemen who watches eroge n stuff...is that really considered a great man? or a perve who then tries and grab a lady but gets kick in the ass by a lady.

really haven't gotten into a fight as of lately but if i can't do anything else then i'll definitely fight back. As for when i was a kid i used to be a crybaby so few fights but still fights were i would lose for my cowardice or probably because the boys were bigger than me xD. There were other times were i just had like a fight for fun with a friend, lol too much DBZ ^^; and other time it was with my bro. That time he helped me take out one teeth that was falling with his fist >.< it didn't hurt too

i'm a Pacifist and have never gotten into a fight per-say... but in second grade we had a parade at the school and my dad came to visit. This one girl comes up to me afterward and goes "omg was that your dad? cause he's so ugly! i'd be ashamed of him!" I got up and punched her so hard i knocked her over, and said "at least i have a dad who cares!" since her dad didn't show up... Lucky me my mom was a teacher at this school so i didn't get in trouble with the school but i did with my parents. But after that i never hit anyone again

    I had to learn something similar to that self defense when I was in Taekwondo. I feel bad for the guy that practiced with me, he go hit in the ribs and kicked a lot. ^^;

I've been in a few. Most of which I lost. I try to only pick fights where I know I have a decent chance of winning. I've been horrible at profiling people apparently.

I've been lurking here for a while now. I usually lurk at boingboing and stayed around here to see what was up.

Also... Hey Danny, you mind getting the hang of the difference between lose and loose?

Simply put, those maneuvers would not work on me. With all my military training and having grown up in a household with 4 other brothers, I am pretty resistant to pain and do not distract easily in combat. But with that said, I would never attempt to subdue anyone as illustrated in the first place. (The first thing to do is get the opponent off of their feet or at least to issue such a distractive shock that they wouldn't likely be able to collect themselves well enough to perform such moves in the first place. Ideally, the first attack is the only attack, so plan your attack carefully.)

It would be interesting to learn how effective these self-defense tactics actually are. I wonder if there are any statistics on the subject?

In any case, the most effective way for a woman to defend herself in exactly that situation would be to use the back of her head as a weapon while at the same time taking a step backward to put the assailant completely off balance. Attempting to simply break free certainly wouldn't be effective against me and I can't imagine it being successful against others.

In defense or offense, keeping the opponent off balance is the most crucial thing anyone can do in the first moments.

*Sigh*...I been into Fights....kinda...I`m afraid of getting into
a real fight....not because whats gonna happen to me....but what ill do...

I remember 2 times i been Super pissed......It scares me to think of it.
Once i was younger, we had this "wars" at school with wood to make "bases"
and stuff.....We was gonna steal the other people wood... What happened
was i turned my back for a sec and got a stick in the back of my head..
ended up crushing there wooden "base"... even 2 teachers didn't manage to hold me
back... In the end i had to calm down myself.....and there was noting left of
    the other sides "base"

The other time was when i was older...
I was been having a hard time with some *Hrm* Stupidos....
one day i was standing in school, in the door way to our class room,
trying to calm down by doing something...someone asked me to stop,
and i ended up ramming a chair into him.....he didn't get really hurt..
just brushed.... it took 2-3 friends to help me call down when this
dude who annoyed me for SOOO long showed his face.....Heard of having
the last drop running over? well...to me the whole water container was
blew up.....I threw EVERYTHING in that class room outside in the hall way...
Every desk and every thing on em......Teachers didn't dare to come close..
This time to...it ended with me calming down myself....i was asked to
go down to the social teachers room....shes a nice person.....

Every time! I Destroyed everything around me when i got pissed.....
so getting into fights.....are dangerous for the one doing it....
For when i get pissed like that....I`m not me.....

*Sigh* I`m happy that i rarely get that pissed...But I`m always afraid of what ill do...

I've never really been in any serious fights, but I used to do sparring when I took Karate.

I remember the first tournament I ever participated in. I was up against this big, chubby lad. I had sparred against plenty of adults in my dojo, so I shouldn't have been scared of bigger opponents, but they were going easy on me. This lad didn't. His foot made firm contact with my face within the first 5 seconds of the match. It didn't hurt much because we were wearing padded foam helmets such for sparring, but I was pretty upset that he beat me so quickly. I think I may have been about 7 years old at the time.

I stopped taking karate about a year later, and I haven't been in any fights since then. I punched my friend Nick in the face a few times, but he always ran to a teacher instead of fighting back.

as a kid with ADHD getting into fights were a daily occurance. by the time I hit high school i had calmed down a lot lot more & generally was more tolerant towards other people instead of punching a guy to the floor who accidently stepped on my foot. I didnt want to participate in any fights unless i really had to because once I get into it. trying to calm myself down & stop fighting is difficult due to ADHD making me very impulsive. back then I was also naturally a lot more agressive. but that wouldnt trigger unless you hit me in the face. in which case if you do id probably do a lot more then just put you through a window if I had the opotunity... even though i might have gone totally mad with anger/agression I still wouldnt continue attacking someone who ive knocked to the ground. that is a golden rule i stick by. I no longer suffer from ADHD & since having martial arts training (Shotokan Karate & Wing Chun Kung Fu)has made me get into fights a lot less. Ive done Shotokan for around 7 years, Wing Chun - 2 years.

I dont want to fight, I dont particularly like or enjoy fighting but if you push me far enough then I will punch you in the throat.

I actually came really close to one when I stormed out of my dorm when my roommate was doing the nasty on the bottom bunk. The RA just happen to be right there when I left the room. I spend some time play games in someone else's room when my roommate was scouting for me thinking I snitched on him. He didn't find me but I was ready for an encounter.

    Been in many.

Also, I decided that I want my future kids to get some kind of martial arts training, mostly in hopes of defense and discipline. That way, they could avoid fights, get away from strangers, and more.

There should really be a "Yes, won and lost" choice XD

I've been to a couple of fights back in grade school and it was mostly with the same guy. He was rather socially challenged and so he was rather tempting to annoy (yes, I'm a bad boy). There was this one time where we fought; he grabbed me by the neck, sinking his nails on my skin while I punched him on the face before his nails got even deeper. I got trouble with both my parents and the principal but it ended peacefully. We both started talking to each other and I ended up helping him with his social problems during high school.

Right now I do Karate so I spare almost every week. Although I'm not really good at it and I almost always end up being the loser, I always look forward to it. It will probably take awhile for me to improve and be able to take down opponents twice my size XD

But I'm not afraid to get into a fight if the day comes. In fact, I look forward to that day. I really want to know if I would be able to stand my ground in a fight or lose :D

More of a passive guy here, that and I don't like hand to hand combat. More of a guy who likes his weapons. Other than that, didn't get into any fights at school, was only a spectator, I distinctly remember a guy throwing a spinning punch, where he missed and fell over.

Just the usual primary playground scuffles, which I usually won because I was heavier than them and knew how to hurt them. (Having a mom who teaches you restraining moves = awesome.)
But none since then. Which I suppose is very lucky for me.

I just wish that image also had diagrams for how to use your nails to your advantage. Nails make awesome weapons, even when they're short.

I never started a phyiscal fight but when I was about five years old, a kid punched me in the face and knocking me on the ground. I immediately got up, with a hanaji(nosebleed), and jumped into his stomach, knocking him on the ground, and I just started punching him in the face until he gave up and said he was sorry. I didn't get into much trouble seeing how old I was and because I was assualted first. Never really had anybody that wanted to fight with me seeing how I am kind of a bigger guy and because I don't try to start stuff.

Fights.... I tried stuff that I would have liked didn't happen (like when a mob locked me in a closet and started kicking it and trying to knock it over), but I don't think I ever ended up in a fist fight. I was prepared for a fight once though. Some guy at school annoyed me on a daily basis and I couldn't figure out why. I didn't even figure out which class he came from but somehow like half the times I left my classroom he was there to annoy me. Eventually I was so annoyed with it that I was prepared for a fight if needed so I grapped him by the collar or shoulders and pushed him into the wall with his back first. Then I lifted him like 10 cm so he feet didn't touch the floor anymore. I then said something like I'm not going to let him continue to annoy me or something like that and he became really scared and looked like he was about to shit his pants. After that I let him go and I never saw him again. I still have no clue to who he was or which class he came from.

Fist fight? I might've mentioned that before but... I recall something from my first year in primary school. A classmate of mine and some friends of his got a hold of me at the schoolyard and everyone of them took a turn in punching me in the stomach. Later the teacher found out and my classmate took a slap. I was content. Justice was delivered.
I also remember that I use to kick a classmate in the ass when he was goofing a lot. Come to think of it, kicking him wasn't the best solution. I'm still hoping I'll see him so I can apoligize.

The left side illustraton of the pic is okay up to step 3, but IMHO if it's a girl being attacked by a same-height or taller man, it's better to throw your head back to hit him. Even if it doesn't actually strike your attacker, it'll throw him long enough to struggle out. If it's real-life self-defence, trying to memorize technique is useless. It boils down to whether or not you can be vicious enough to injure or kill your attacker before he injures or kills you. Logic can keep you out of a fight, but once you're in one, trying to think logically is your worst enemy.

As to me being in fights--yeah. Studying High School in Tondo, Manila tends to teach you some things about self-defence whether you like it or not. Like: how it's way smarter to avoid the fight entirely to begin with. I have a mild scar near my left eye where my face was bashed in with a galvanized iron pipe in a fight in school. So it kind of makes you a very unlikable person, being in fights every so often, win or lose. It had gotten to the point when I was playing around mock-karate-fighting a friend...and I broke his leg (I thought I held back. Apparently I didn't). Thank goodness he recovered, but that incident was scarier to me than any of the fights I'd ever been in--not knowing my own strength.

This sounds like a parental lecture, but really, I'd recommend not to get into fights; avoid them if you can, not only because it's dangerous, but when you get to a level of fighting wherein you actually, seriously consider taking someone else's life and not be the least bit remorseful about it--took me a long time to unlearn everything. Even today, I still react too viciously to people when they something innocently that I take offence at.

You know, I actually laugh when someone criticizes my liking of Renai games like Tokimeki Memorial--I tell them that I've already lived the High School Fighting life, not interested in re-living it in games.

Addendum: Now that I think about it, it was never a fistfight I got into. It was elbows, knees, kicks, punches, broken glass, sharp-tipped umbrellas, G.I. pipes--I realize I'm lucky that I'd never actually fought someone with a real weapon like a knife or (God forbid) a gun. But a stand-up man-to-man fistfight? No, all my fights were (sadly) dirty.

I've been in several fights before. Though this basic yet obviously effective method of defense would come in handy for those who havent learned a martail art. Though I suggest and highly recommend Judo, Juijitsu, and Krav Maga as methods of self defense.

in singapore u get all these yankee's in high school ~_~ u just have to look em in the eyes for 2 seconds or more and they start to get pissed..and eventually that'd get u into a fight >_>

if they lose on a 1 on 1 they get ppl to confront u outside...like 3 or more, if they still lose.... then they try to talk to u and tell u..."ok i think this is going no where why dun we just mind our own business? huh?"

then u look at them with those -.- eyes

    are all yankees like that?

a real fight ? 1. i've been able to avoid it up until now except for that one exception. and the outcome.. well it depends how you look at it. i was bleeding (i got sucker punched ) but i was still standing, i had locked the guy's arm in place and kept it so until the teachers arrived and then proceeded to go to class and my friend (who's quite strong ^^; ) took care of his two friends, you know, keeping them on a distance. yeah, i got pretty lucky up until now.

It's split in seasons for me.
Up to middle school fights didn't really mean anything. I've forgot almost all of them, except for two occasions.
Then for two grades of high school (9th & 10th) I've got a lot of practice. Most of the time the reason being me being ironic or me overreacting. For the 11th and current grade(12th) I haven't really fought or maybe nothing worth writing home about. Perhaps it's me making friends, my gym course or my notoriety over the last two years.

That being said I've spent and am spending a great time in high school vastly overshadowing these fights. I'll probably have a lot of fond memories even after I'm done with it.
