Nikon title=

Thank you all for the kind words regarding the Nikon CM! Am pleased with the great work by the Weiden and Kennedy team and producer Timothy Saccenti.

Today we look at the behind-the-scenes of the shoot but before we do, thought we'd take a look at an interview with Timothy below.

And for those who have not seen it yet - the full version Nikon commercial below.

Nikon title=

Arrived at the warehouse at about 08:00. The place had been converted into a studio. Looks like staff got there much earlier to set up the equipment.

Nikon title=

Was a but cold in the studio which they warmed up with these huge gas burners. They made a roaring noise when turned on and had to be switched off during shooting.

Nikon title=

Some malarky going on before getting changed.

Nikon title=

The dolly tracks used at the beginning of the shoot.

Nikon title=

All windows were covered up to prevent light getting in.

Nikon title=

Taking a few shots around the studio with Aoi-chan.

Nikon title=

The operations room where we discuss the shoot and photos to be used as backdrops. There are actually three image videos in the series - the first one is with Klein and Dytham who are not only architects but also run Pecha Kucha Night and own Super Deluxe where the last Tokyo CGM Night was held. You can see their bit below.

Nikon title=

Then its off to the changing room to get kitted up - but first things first - set up Aoi-chan.

Nikon title=

Love this Firefox T-shirt.

Nikon title=

Some snacks to munch on while having makeup done.

Nikon title=

I was asked to bring along some of my wardrobe for the director to choose. Was initially asked if I had light colored clothing ^^;

Nikon title=

That and that.

Nikon title=

After changing its time to be made up.

Nikon title=

Any make-up otaku here?

Nikon title=

All spots and blemishes are gone twenty mins later and whats left of the hair is made up.

Nikon title=

Back in the main studio to see whats going on. Was difficult choosing photos for the background as I had to pick out stuff whereby you cant really see recognizable faces, or logos or brand names. I really wanted to feature figures but would usually mean getting permission from the figure maker and then the license holder and then the original artist blah blah.

Luckily the boss at Good Smile is chummy with Crypton and told me that he will sort out getting permission for usage of Hatsune Miku.

Nikon title=

Camera set up on dolly track and nearly time to start.

Nikon title=

A few words with the director before starting.

Nikon title=

Shooting starts. This is the intro to my slot. The camera moves in with lights down and as the camera comes closer the lights come on. This is done quite a few times.

Nikon title=

After the first slot is done, the dolly tracks are moved and bits n pieces are re-arranged.

Nikon title=

A huge heavy looking lens change.

Nikon title=

Lighting is adjusted too.

Nikon title=

The second slot is where I sit down and have somebody ask me questions. Here I'm being kitted out with a pin mic.
Completely unrehearsed because they wanted me to sound natural which is why some of my answers sounded cheesy ^^;

The man who was asking me stuff was Shunsuke Iwai who works at Wieden and Kennedy - check out his making-of at his burogu. He is an airplane otaku and can tell you which plane (type and configuration) landed at any given time @.@

Nikon title=

The lovely Junko-san from VA Entertainment fixes the balding hair ^^;

Nikon title=

A few laughs before we start. The photo here is available in the Uchimizu photo article. Tokyo Hunter was with me on the day at the Uchimizu and took a couple of those shots.

Nikon title=

Just noticed Miku's pantsu ^^;

Nikon title=

The photo in the background here is in the Tokyo City View photo article.

Nikon title=

Some fine tuning for the camera angle.

Nikon title=

And Action!

Nikon title=

Wifey has a look at the proceedings at the back of the studio.

Nikon title=

Here I choose which photos I want to talk about. The key message in the commercial is about finding special moments hence the tag line "Find your next moment."

Nikon title=

For the third slot I'm running around behind the screens with a very nice Nikon camera which I wanted to take home with me ^^;
This photo is a fave of mine and you can see it and other similar ones in the Toyosu Photo Walk photo article.

Nikon title=

Difficult to get good shots of the next slot. This device had a mirror at the bottom and top.
The inside was filled with water. You can just about make out the projector to the left of the photo - the image is projected onto the bottom mirror, through the water, hits the top mirror and then is projected on the screen at the other end giving a Minority Report type look n feel that you saw in the clip below. Does anybody know what this device is called? Me forgot to ask.

Nikon title=

And this is what it looked like - the actual CM will give you a better idea of the end effect.

Nikon title=

The projectors they used for the screens were huge!

Nikon title=

And the final slot is where I'm standing up talking about my photo memories.

Nikon title=

Was asked to look serious ^^;

Nikon title=

And thats a wrap for Danny!
The staff need to stay behind to shoot the other two CM's after lunch. But before lunch its a group photo with the Wieden and Kennedy team, some folks from Nikon, the stylist and Timothy.

Nikon title=

Kawaii zo!

Nikon title=

And its time for lunch while watching Japan VS Korea Vs Aoi-chan.

Nikon title=

A lot of time n effort n resources go into making commercials. "Otsukaresama!" is the greeting used for folks who are hard at work.

Nikon title=

Chicken katsu bento for lunch.

Nikon title=

Then its downstairs on the first floor of the warehouse for photos.

Nikon title=

And a few snaps from the video. Starts off with a pan zoom.

Nikon title=

When I take a photo, I usually think about how the viewer sees it and try to ensure there is something in the photo where one can identify the location.

Nikon title=

Here is that Minority Report type visuals cut. Ended up with only a few seconds but shot it for quite a while.

Nikon title=

A few bumps here n there but all zits have been removed from my ugly mug ^^;

Nikon title=

And they weighed this much.

Nikon title=

And were really soft n bouncy.

Nikon title=

And if you push them they would rebound and hit you in the face.

Nikon title=

Name that Nikon camera and lens.

Nikon title=

Zettai Ryoiki is...

Nikon title=

She only talks to me when people are not around. You must beleive me.

Nikon title=

Nikon - Find your next moment.

Nikon title=

I would be playing with my oppai all day long if I turned into a woman.

Nikon title=

The CM is up at nikonnext.com and short versions may be viewable in your region on TV soon. The official site also has a few other photos of the making like this one.

Nikon title=

Another shot of Timothy and myself going over what he needs.

Nikon title=

Been looking for a new pair of glasses for a while. Been wearing this pair for a few years now. How often do you change your specs?

Nikon title=

nikonnext.com also has the Japanese and I think they got Chinese versions too.

Nikon title=

The translation turned out to be a bit different but interesting - "A moment of a day in the life of a figure." (kind of).

And the next CM I'm going to appear in is the...

    I've only used Canon because that's my brother's choice for camera. I don't have my own because he's got 2... so why buy my own when I can just borrow :P

    I really enjoyed your comments and jokey captions on this behind-the-scenes article for the Nikon CM. That Minority Report-style device was pretty cool, and I loved that you interspersed one of your daughters and your wife in the shots.

    You asked about "make-up otaku" - I wouldn't call myself one, but then again I only got into the wearing of such things recently. [Not all girls in my country wear makeup.]

    I tend to want to invest in good eyeshadow, eyeliner, and mascara because like you I wear glasses, and want to both look nice and not muck up the lenses. I think your makeup artist knew what she was doing - she left in some of the not-so-good spots to make sure you look human and not airbrushed or what XD Can't say anything about the balding hair though.

    I mean it's able to get the viewers attention as to what they are trying to emphasize.

    On cameras, i prefer a Canon. Not that it's one of the popular ones but at the moment it's the only thing that i know how to operate cleanly. Never had a chance to work on a Nikon camera

    btw i was wondering, were you nervous in front of the camera? from my experience (i.e. a couple of weeks fooling around with a video camera for coursework) it is quite difficult to "speak" to the camera, so one would end up with there eyes all over the place, which is a problem for the director. did you have the same problem initially or are you accustomed to it due to the sheer amount of press coverage you have had before?

    Always with Canon, They use the Cmos from the start, they created the digital flash systeme before everybody. Their lenses are so much more valuable than some Nikon and the Iso technics are very at the top.

    Didotz : My old EOS 350D/Rebel beat the D70 at the iso level even if the 3D cam is inside, at the point canon is much better and I don't even think about the 5D Mark II (love)

      Lenses so valuable? You don't seem to recall when Canon obsoleted their previous lens mount, FD mount? 1971-1987, about 16 years worth of lenses, basically worthless when Canon switched to the EF lens mount that's now current. Canon abandoned loyal users. People who bought up a collection of FD mount lenses were furious. Huge disrespect to their customers.

      On the other hand, Nikon, with their F mount, starting in 1959 and IS still in use today in their current DSLRs. Can practically use many older lenses on the current cameras. Great respect shown to their customers.

      well...i don't want to get this conversation to be another-nikon-canon-comparing-quarell or so. i just said about nikon's body durability. not about iso etc. my d70 is surely old. and i'm sure that my iso is far away from good. it's 6megapixel and sometimes yields error after putting the cf. so i don't mind with any comments.and for pocket camera, i certainly love canon's pocket cam, not nikon's.

      anyway, thanks for your comments. i really appreciated it.

      Actually, as both a Canon and Olympus user, I believe Nikon's ISO power is much better than I've seen before. Nikon photos at high ISOs show very little noise, if any at all, whereas both Canon and Olympus get a ton of noise and soft images at high ISOs (especially Olympus).

    The CM turned out really well though. I was surprised by its length, but I guess the whole thing isn't meant to be on TV.
    Was epic seeing your photos all huge like that too. I want a setup like that at home. Forget picture frames. This is the future...

    Awesome behind-the-scenes article, Danny, thanks!

    Few things surprised me, like they just used your photos for the BG which were taken mostly with the Panasonic LX3, I would have thought they would have insisted on using Nikon taken stock photography for the CM. But I guess that would have taken more resource and less of the Danny personality in the interview and BG as well.

    I'm surprised that you didn't get a SAFNC (Suddenly Acquired Free Nikon Cam) after this CM, perhaps in the very near future?! hehehe

    Love all those oppai comments. LOL.

    And you definitely look nicer smiling. Serious face Danny is kinda scary.

    If I had the choice I'd probably get a Canon DSLR even though I really like the LX3 at the moment. Nothing against Nikon though, I think they are equally great in the camera field.

    Btw in some of these pictures, a few staff members were wearing mask to work, always wondered why... can anyone care to give an explanation?

    Thanks for the walk through Danny and it was nice to see your wifes handy work with the camera to.

    As far as camera's go Nikon is king for me, I've spent time over the years taking allot of photo's and working with other amateur and semi professional photographers and Nikon plainly does better on the film and lense side of things. I've also used and like Konika which should have been included in this poll as it is an important camera as is Leica camera's which rank above Nikon in quality and these are my favorite camera's.

    Are you referring to dslr or including point-and-shoot? I voted Nikon, initially chose Nikon for my first dslr for the lenses and I was looking at the D40 for the longest time. Will be adding some lenses in the future when I have a larger source of income xD;

    For compact cameras I'd choose Canon, excellent quality for a sensible price. So I have a dslr Nikon D40, and a Canon powershot A550.

    You look totally natural Danny~! The Nikon commercial looks great, very well put together, I want to see if they ever show it over here in Australia xD Will be downloading a copy for myself though x3

    Nice CM, Mr. Danny! I wish I can see you again in more CMs in the future XD

    Looks like we have the same taste in clothing! I prefer to wear dark-colored t-shirts, mostly black.

    The only SLR camera I have handled as of the moment is an old Nikon EOS 888 SLR my mom used years ago. I would love to practice photography using a DSLR because it's just too costly for me to practice using my mom's camera: the cost of the film and the cost of developing the film T_T

    One of my relatives is planning to give me a Sony Alpha camera sometime in August. I do hope he keeps his promise. Although I prefer a Nikon or Canon DSLR, I would sound ungrateful if I asked him to change the camera he's going to give me x_x

      Rofl! None of my cameras are on the list, well back in time I am probably technologically to gadgets probably. Got my 1st cell phone last year after all... My first digital camera and still using it is a 10.5 Mega pixel Vivitar which I bought 2 new giant batteries for to keep it working.

      My current ready click flash no nonsense copy to computer instantly digital camera is the Kodak Easy Share 10 mega pixel. I don't have to mess with shielding the flash on this one like I do the Vivitar. I can take a new figurine in its box sealed put the camera up to it click, perfect picture. Only like 1 out of 17 is too much flash. So

      Kodak Easy Share Thingey Click Camera is number 1 currently for ME!

    Well, the camera body isn't as high as a D-1/2/3/x/hs and sine you said it was pretty nice, I would have to say it something along the lines of a D-70 or D-100. As for the lens, Nikkor D 75-300mm 3.5 telephoto? It looks too long and too narrow to be one of their 18-200mm 2.8 lenses. (I think that's what specs were.)

    I learned to shoot with a Canon T70 and later upgraded to the Canon Elan when it came out during my senior year in high school, which sadly was stolen during my second year at college. I used high end Nikons (D1, D2, D3, xs and HSs) at my last job. While nice to have, the people I worked with treated them like crap and it was kind of depressing.

    I decided to try out Olympus this time out based on a friend's recommendation, I was intrigued by the four thirds system. I ended up getting a E-520 with a nice pancake lens and a good telephoto.

    I plan on taking quite a few pictures during my move from Montana to Florida.

    Great work to all the people involved in the cm making it possible.
    For camera, if the camera has the functions I want, good megapixel range, wide angle, good lcd screen, good battery life, good lens and lastly good price, any brand from the above poll will do. One last thing, menu navi must be easy for core manual mode. At the end of the day, it is up to the user to bring out the full features of the camera.

    Personally, I am a Sony man myself, at least for now. I have used a Canon DSLR in my studio photography class, and although it was an older model, I didn't enjoy the design and the pictures it took were less than satisfying. I just recently bought a Sony 9.1MP DSC-H50 and am more pleased with it, which is just a regular digital camera, than with the Canon DSLR I used.

    Geez, Danny, you and your black clothing. Way to make work harder for them. xD

    Very interesting for me to see how they handled the commercial - and informative. I just got back from a film shoot today as well, and I'm only beginning to realize that the only difference between student and professional shoots is the equipment you get to play with. My professors keep telling us that once we're on a shoot we're filmmakers, not students, and it's just starting to sink in.

    No idea what that water-effect device is, but I winced when I looked at the photos of the projector. That thing must heat up and suck power like crazy.

    Does that last line mean you actually have another gig lined up, or are you just teasing again? Never can tell with you... x_x

    Oh, and that answers my question in your previous news post regarding Miku and copyright. Good to have connections, indeed. :P

    Congrats on the photo shot, seems like an exciting event! The commercial turned out to be quite serious, it has an inspiring feeling to it, I like it!:)

    Glasses, been wearing the current one for ten years now and I'm not planing on changing them. For a change, I'd rather use contact lenses, I hate to mess around my eyes though.:)

      just noticed your comment... 10 years? wow, are your glasses still in good shape? do you wear glasses for everyday activities or just for special needs (like only for reading)?

      i can't imagine what it will be like if i persist on using the same pair for 10 years...(i use glasses for daily activities, can't see clearly without em)

        Yup, I use my glasses even while playing football or other sports (I can't see clearly without them either). And yes, they are still in a good shape despite I had a lot of "accidents" (specially while playing football) and it got damaged a lot, but luckily the guys at the store always managed to fix them somehow (the lenses themself broke only once while I stepped on my glasses at a concert, it was quite expensive to replace the lenses, but the frame survived the accident without damage).

        That's a first time i hear someone not changing glasses for 7 years... doesn't your glasses frame age?

        i've changed my glasses for 3 times already (usually a frame will last 2-3 years in my case), the first change was because i accidentally broke the frame into 2 pieces, the second one was due to too much aging on the steel frame (frame discoloring and getting loose on the joints), and the last one was also because of aging on the frame, so i invested on a titanium frame which cost quite a bit, but i'm really satisfied with it (still wearing it now), the frame is light yet very strong and seems to resist sweat and water, so far no sign of rust or discoloring... this one will last for a very long time...

          The frames has bent many times due to me sitting on it by accident, me fainting and other stuff, but it's still strong. No rust whatsoever. The only thing that concerns me is that one of my eyes are getting worse, so I need to replace the lens and there're green stains on the nose protector (yuck). But so far the frame is strong... plus it looks like Yuki Nagato's frame before she decided not to replace it. ^^;

    Wow. What an excellent article on the insight of the commercial you are participating in! :)

    Well in regards to what Nikon body it was, based on the fact that the viewfinder is actually larger than your current EOS Kiss2, and the body design does not pertain a integrated handgrip, my guess will be that it is either a D300 or a D700, not that I'm a Nikon user (actually a Canon EOS New Kiss film and a EOS 400D user).
    Nikon lens-wise i'm pretty much hopeless so i won't answer that one. ^^;

    In regards for the search of new glasses, how about a look at Moscot? They sure have a timeless look (considering they are in business since 1915), and there seems to be a high number of Moscot branches available in Japan.

    And do tell us when you have SAC too! :D

    Rather belated, but still, I want to congratulate you on this ad, Danny. It's a great oppurtunity to bring your adventures and hardship into the spotlight for another audience (probably - unless the ad is only shown on otaku websites ;)).

    Looks awesome! This pretty much made me tip in favor of Nikon over all other cameras, so I'm getting either the D40 or the D60 this summer. Thanks!

    Man, I love your sexy pose in the beginning of the commercial, Danny. I'm sure chicks digg it. Oh, and in some photos with your serious look you look as if you're going to come out of the screen and kick the **** outta someone.

    I would be more scared of the make-up table than the super-huge lens haha ! I can't say I've ever worn make-up before, I bet it'd feel weird ?

    Anyway hope to see you in some more CM's you nailed the job !

    Those lenses secretly scare me...they can cost more than my house I bet! It frightens me to think of how careful you need to be with those lenses...
