The second part of the Doll Show that took place last Sunday - the first part in the Doll Show photo article.

Today we look at the other stuff which include Mama Chapp, 16 scale and Blythe.
First up is Obama and personal body guard Miyafuji Yoshika.

Blythe title=

Whats the name for this style?

Blythe title=

Been thinking about getting eye lashes for my girls lately.

Blythe title=

I don't know what it is but many folks who have adopted dolls want to show them to others - I have the same feeling too ^^;

Among the guidelines at the Doll Show was an item asking folks to be careful when carrying their dolls about as the fingers can potentially take out an eye. I say a few folks carrying their daughters around with them on the day.

Blythe title=

Some cases for folks to carry their dolls around - most of these fit Blythe dolls. I was looking for a violin Dollfie carry case with no luck. The Doll Party next week is more focused on Volks dolls so there should be more Dollfie goodies to be had.

Blythe title=

One thing I do notice about the doll world is that there seems to be a lack of casual clothes - mostly seem to be dresses or costumes. I guess for a steamstress/seamster that making casual normal stuff would be a bit boring?

Blythe title=

More bits n pieces.

Blythe title=

The other thing I discovered about being a doll parent is that you want to buy stuff for your daughters or sons all the time ^^;

Blythe title=

This reminds me - I need a yukata for my girls to wear in the Summer.

Blythe title=

Some Final Fantasy type gear being donned by the boys.

Blythe title=

Many garnments cost the same or more than human ones ^^;

Blythe title=

Some nice casual clothing for a change. One of the things I've learnt about owning dolls is that color comes off on their skin really easily. Saber was wearing her blue default dress for ages and what happened was that color ended up transferring on to her shoulders and wrists. Managed to remove most of it using paint thinner.

The pink trousers here could potentially be bad for doll skin. I suggest using cooking wrap (that plastic film stuff) to cover the body before fitting dolls out with dark color garnments.

Blythe title=

Some more frilly dresses. Cant wait for my next made-to-order item from Chun.

Blythe title=

For those who would like their daughters to fly and have nekomimi and tail.

Blythe title=

Frilly stuff.

Blythe title=

Azone do a ton of doll accessories and clothes.

Blythe title=

Girls in pajamas playing with pillows - the every day view at your house.

Blythe title=

More dolls on display.

Blythe title=

Lots of different brands that I'm not familiar with - probably because I'm mainly interested in Dollfie Dream.

Blythe title=

Many materials, buttons and buckles for those who make their own doll clothing.

Blythe title=

30 yen for a single piece.

Blythe title=

More traditional Japanese gear.

Blythe title=

Some Blythe history courtesy of Wikipedia

Blythe was created in 1972 by designer Allison Katzman and marketed for one year in the USA by toy company Kenner. The doll would only become popular some 30 years later.

In 1997, New York TV and video producer Gina Garan was given a 1972 Kenner Blythe by a friend and began using it to practice her photographic skills. She began taking her Blythe everywhere with her and took hundreds of photos. In 1999, she was introduced to CWC's Junko Wong by artist and illustrator, Jeffrey Fulvimari which brought Blythe to the attention of Parco and toy executives.

In 2002, Gina published her first book of Blythe photography with Chronicle Books, This is Blythe. Later that year, Hasbro (the Trademark and License owner) gave Takara of Japan a license to produce the New Edition of Blythe (NEO Blythe).

Blythe was used in a television advertising campaign by the Parco department store in Japan and was an instant hit. Success in Japan led Hasbro to issue a license to Ashton Drake Galleries (ADG)to produce Blythe exclusively in the U.S., where the doll become a niche product in a marginal market, selling largely to adults.

Blythe title=

Saw many cats next to the Blythe dolls but not too sure what they are about.

Blythe title=

Mini Blythe dolls which I've never seen before.

Blythe title=

I guess Blythes are like the Nendoroid equivalent of the doll world?

Blythe title=

Blythes get short sighted too.

Blythe title=

4,500 yen for this dress.

Blythe title=

Kanu in Nurse gear.

Blythe title=

More Blythe outfits.

Blythe title=

What the name of this style?

Blythe title=

More of the traditional stuff.

Blythe title=

Lica (Rica) chan - the Japanese equivalent of Barbie.

I remember some industry talk a while ago when Mattel wanted to bring barbie into the Japanese market - the folks at Mattel were shocked in disbelief when told that Japanese folks didn't think barbie was cute.
Retro Japanese Barbie ad below.

Retro Rika-chan ad below.
Modern Rica-chan below.

Blythe title=

Moar Blythe apparel.

Blythe title=

And for those who have not seen it yet - human Blythe dolls.

Blythe title=

More Blythes...

Blythe title=

...and more.

Blythe title=

Maid goodies.

Blythe title=

Rin Kokonoe.

Blythe title=

These are a series of seamless joint dolls from Arte Tokio.
The Arte 060 is about the same size as my Dollfies with the L bust but costs 74,800 yen.

Blythe title=

Blythe stands.

Blythe title=

Cheap Blythe gear at 2,400 yen.

Blythe title=

The cutest Blythe on display.

Blythe title=

Miko?

Blythe title=

This is going to be the next giveaway prize.

Blythe title=

Forgot the name of this series.

Blythe title=

Kamen Rider.

Blythe title=

A familiar flag.

Blythe title=

Kagami takes a break.

Blythe title=

The first time I saw wigs in a bag - they usually come in a plastic box.

Blythe title=

Some girls relaxing on the sofa.

Blythe title=

Mamachapp girls.

Blythe title=

More Mamachapp.

Blythe title=

These are my fave. Soo Sweet!

Blythe title=

Mamachapp don't usually sell any of the Mokochan series at shows but they made an exception today - but I was too late by the time I found out ToT.

Blythe title=

Little angel.

Blythe title=

Lacey stuff.

Blythe title=

Small stuff.

Blythe title=

Stylish stuff.

Blythe title=

Handsome stuff.

Blythe title=

Randy stuff.

Blythe title=

Elegant stuff.

Blythe title=

Girls on the grass. Would love to be on the grass today on this sunny public holiday.

Blythe title=

Quite like this pic.

Blythe title=

Sheep girls.

Blythe title=

My wifey likes flowery patterns which is why we have flowery curtains etc which I wasn't a fan of. But since adopting Saber and Aoi-chan, I'm starting to like flowery patterns! Soon I'll be growing oppai. Wont get any work done as I'll probably be playing with them all day.

Blythe title=

Some furniture and jars of stuff.

Blythe title=

Iron man breaks out in song.

Blythe title=

The chap that was slaughtered by Wolverine is Bush.

Blythe title=

This is what Yoda gets up to in his spare time.

Blythe title=

Spidey cant help but look at Tamaki-chans eyes.

Blythe title=

A load of malarkey going on.

Blythe title=

Some dolls have a pilot dressed as a maid in their heads.

Blythe title=

After applying for the press pass for the Doll Show, I got a list of rules for press folks to follow. It started off with some blurb about how there are folks who think that doll collecting is a weird hobby and for that reason many doll collectors want don't want their photo taken.

I personally don't see any reason to be embarrassed about ones hobbies or interests and would prefer to share rather than hide.

I guess one of the reasons one may be embarrassed could be because that traditionally boys play with cars, soldiers, robots and pull the wings off flys while girls play with barbie dolls.
From the previous poll, I see that there are quite a few males who are interested in or collect dolls - many in my Flickr contact group too.

What do you think about blokes who collect dolls? Whats the difference between collecting dolls and figures?

What were the other rules for those with a press pass? I have been looking online for pictures of Alchemic Lab's (錬金術工房) new doll that was shown at this event but haven't found anything. Did certain tables not allow pictures?

Also thanks for posting this, I enjoyed your pictures.

I totally was thinking The Matrix, but then remembered that it was Carrie-Ann Moss' character in the phone booth in the first scene and not Keanu Reeves. And neither of them had facial hair in that movie. I fail.

At first I thought Blythes look slightly creepy, but then now I think they have a special attraction to them. I wouldn't compare them to Nendoroids of the 'figure world' - they aren't as cute, but perhaps in a special Chucky way.... ;) Can't shake the image of my house at night full of Blythes....

I want a Dollfie and am not embarrassed about doll collecting or even figure collecting. Not much difference to me but Dolls are obviously higher maintenance, more expensive and could ultimately be more addictive...

I think figures, to me, can act as a physical representation of my interests in anime or possible manga or video games. As figures are usually based on Characters from such mediums. Dolls however are sort of a personal second "person" that you take care of. I think that's why they're associated with Women so much, and why I'm sort of turned off by them as opposed to figures.

Hmm...Not a huge fan of the Blythe. They just don't vibe right with me. But those mamachapp dolls are ridiculously adorable and I want one ^^ Wonderful photos as always!

Speaking as a member of the opposite gender, I don't think it's weird at all for guys to collect or be interested in dolls. It's all a stereotype and silly to think that only girls should like that kind of stuff, and I hate stereotypes. But it's still a very ingrained thought in society (at least over here), so I see why some people might be embarrassed to admit it, although I don't think one should ever have to be embarrassed about sharing what they enjoy with others. I do understand the reality of the situation, though.

I get some looks when I tell people I'm into anime, manga, and figure collecting (and they see my ever changing computer wallpaper, which is currently sporting Guchuko cuteness), and I'm certain some people think I'm a strange weirdo (maybe even some people in the anime community, since figure collecting is mostly targeted towards guys and the fact that I can appreciate the beauty of the figures and want them badly, whether fully clothed or not, heh), but others are actually interested or at least don't mind it. Not that I bring it up myself out of the blue, but if it the interest subject comes up, I'm happy to let people know.

But maybe I'm just biased since I'm already into this stuff :P In fact, don't listen to me, I don't know anything -_-; Just enjoy what you enjoy and be happy ^^ That was probably better than that whole paragraph in the middle. Ah well.

Dolls and figures, both similar in the form that they are representations of characters but I guess the figures that are seen are more based upon known characters, while dolls may be seen as a more feminine thing because of the customisation I guess of clothes etc, and most of them are just a non known name. Well that's what I think.
Blythe dolls just creep me out, sorry but I won't be getting one of them.

Very cool and funny display in the pics at the end. Loads o anime and crossovers ^^ Any full pic? If not I'll just dl the seperated shots~

I just wash the clothes to keep them from bleeding onto the dolls, but I wouldn't recommend it for more delicate garments.

Also, a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is much better for removing stains on the dolls. I don't know how available they are in Japan, but paint thinner is a bit dangerous me thinks. O.O

Males collecting dolls is fine. Dress and pose them up is fine. Taking tons of dolls pictures is fine too. But other than that, it can be quite creepy to see anyone talking or treating a doll like a real person, if you get what i mean.

Collecting dolls seems perfectly fine to me, rather like collecting figures. That being said, while many of these dolls look fantastic, some of them really scare me.It's as if they are staring in to me and sucking out my very soul with their gaze. Must be something about the shape of the head.... or the eyes... the eyes.... THEIR EYES!!!

I don't think that there is anything wrong with having this as a hobby. It doesn't appeal to me, but I understand how it could to others. Though it still creeps me out! Not the people collecting mind you(though I'm sure there are a few who could), but the dolls themselves.

I'm glad you have discovered a new interest. I just hope it doesn't cut into Gundam/figure coverage too much. I just loved your articles on those events, and hope you still attend a few despite your insider connections.

I'm again in the group that doesn't dig the Blythes. Nothing against those who do, but every time I see them my reaction is basically: ". . . .huh." Mamachaps are adorable though! DDs are still my fave, but I wouldn't mind a Mamachap one bit.

I think people like to dress their dolls in ways that they feel they couldn't pull off in public, hence the showier clothing. Some of those dresses I would so wear in people size though--like the black one on the rack inhttp://www.dannychoo.com/adp/eng/1699/Blythe.html#image25933 . Pretty!

I think people collecting dolls is perfectly fine, regardless of their gender. It's when they become completely convinced their doll is a real person that I begin to get concerned. ^^; A bit of it's fine, as it kind of echos playing pretend as a kid, but insisting your doll has a soul, for instance, is a bit extreme.

    I find them extremely creepy.
First, they don't have eyebrows and second, their feet are abnormally tiny, third they looked malformed overall.
I have a cartoon somewhere of my girlfriend's blythe doll tearing up that Russian teddy that's so popular in Japan, name alludes me. She didn't find it too cheerful.

      "

Unlike Barbie, who's proportions are so ridiculous that she'd be ten foot tall with size EEE breasts and only a 16inch waist?

I don't mind when people say "not for me" but I do get offended when people preface (or ps) their comment with "no offence" - if it wasn't going to cause offence, you wouldn't even need to use that term.

If I am not particularly into a certain collectable - for example Im just not into Mamachap or Licca, I don't spout "ohh ugly, people who do that are weird" or "that stuff is just creepy" - those comments are rather hurtful I think.

Sorry for using your post Tomio as an example, but so many comments on this particular thread are rather depressing in their unintentional meanness to people who do in fact like Blythes and don't think their hobby is creepy, unnatural, disturbing or otherwise warranting such statements.

I love my resin girlies, I will love Illya when she gets here, and Rin if I win out in the Volks Lottery.

really stereotypical stuff gets old. though, honestly there are some things I still stereotype.

Guys shouldn't wear makeup, unless they are on stage, being filmed, or queer.
Guys should wear Men's clothing, not their girlfriends jeans. sorry , her pantsu are okay.. but not her jeans kids.

but, outside of those, I'm pretty lenient. ^_^ So, do what ya wanna do, don't interfere with what I wanna do.. and I won't have to shoot ya ^_^ (this message is at not one in particular just so everyone feels safe)

My husband and I have his and her dollfie dreams and he is pretty accepting of my doll collection (which is fairly large) then again me having such a large collection myself and talking about them might have just wore him down.

It's exciting to see all the different doll types together at a huge show like that. I occasionally go to small meets with other collectors but that is it.

Blythes are very polarizing even in the doll community, you either love or hate them. I didn't like them at first because they are shiny and have no eyebrows then I got one of Gina Garin's books as a gift and ended up wanting one of my own to photograph. I was getting bored with pullip after collecting them all and well they are at the very least different.

I believe the cat dolls are called Odeco but I am not positive.

The pictures came out beautiful!!! I love how clear they are, I feel like I'm actually at the doll show (I wish .-.) I had no idea there was such a large variety of dolls out there. Some of them are really cute! My favorite out of all of them has to be the one cosplaying cardcaptor Sakura, she came out so beautiful <333

I think that in the US, collecting "action figures" and collecting dolls like these would be seen as two very different things. Having scantily-clad "dolfies" all over one's desk here would be about like having pictures of girls in swimsuits on one's cubicle walls--and neither would win you points with the general office population. Action figures? You'd be thought of as weird, perhaps, but dolfies would have you branded as a pervert. (Which I don't agree with, but that's what most people would think.) In that sense, I can see why some people would not want their pictures taken. Some people are embarrassed to be seen as "otaku," and others wear it proudly.

I don't really care if other guys collect dolls but I won't be doing so. I'll admit the clothes look nice, and often times, it's the clothes that make the man, but I still find the dolls themselves unappealing.

Long as the hobby's harmless it's not a big deal to me one way or the other. I do tend to think guys collecting dolls are a bit odd, but otherwise it's not that big of a deal. Then again I'm hardly representative of anything, considering how far left some of my views are. (I tend to dig some figures myself, but don't have a very huge collection or anything).

I think you've stumbled upon why doll owners call their dolls musume, Danny. They nearly cost just as much. ><

"Since adopting Saber and Aoi-chan, I'm starting to like flowery patterns! Soon I'll be growing oppai. Wont get any work done as I'll probably be playing with them all day."

Oh, that made me laugh so hard. I'm not even sure why - maybe because it was said with the internet-equivalent of a straight face. xP Also, pictures from Iron Man onwards were incredibly amusing.

Eyelashes.... Some people do put eyelashes on DD, but personally I think they look better on resin dolls and DD look better without them. I tried lashes on a DD and I want to remove them and just paint the lashes next time. It find it goes better with their anime look. You can apply them with regular white glue just to try it out, so if you don't like it it's easy to remove them.

About the casual clothes, I know what you mean! At first I only wanted to dress my girls in BTSSB and other frilly lolita stuff, and into sailor school uniform and maid dressed and other anime looking outfit. Then I started wanting to dress them in more casual clothes but you are right it's hard to find hehe. Volks made a few casual DD outfits 1 or 2 years ago but hasn't really made any since.

I bought a few pieces from Musedoll which fits DD nicely and some are a bit casual. Musedoll body is very similar to DD, the legs are just a bit skinnier. Some tops might be too tight for the L bust though. If it's a loose or stretchy fabric it will fit, like this sweater :
    http://www.musedoll.com/shop/step1.php?number=497
The jeans are very tight but fit :
    http://www.musedoll.com/shop/step1.php?number=552
The shoes fit DD perfect also.

Stains, wow you removed it with paint thinner? Hehe. Better not leave the daughters in dark clothes for too long, if you do, it's better if you wear body stocking underneath. Actually DD stains a lot more easily than resin dolls. Resin dolls don't really stain much and they can be coated with protective stuff (which doesn't work well on DD's vinyl) Volks body stocking works nicely. http://www.volksusa.com/ddbodystocking.html
But plastic wrap works too if you are on a budget hehe. To remove stains that are deep into the vinyl, this stuff from Twin pines works great :
    http://www.twinpines.com/Catalog.html?VT=abi_PFt0rN.ojIi_aQ2iLucTDmtIciK7.E47OFt0rNc8EG&Tmp_CategoryID=00002
Some people also use 10% benzoyl peroxyde acne cream if it's available in your area without prescription (not avail. where I live), which works kind of the same way as the twine pines stuff. The chemicals work the stain out or bleaches it or something like that. Used it a few times and was happy. Nothing else worked. But I'm curious what kind of paint thinner you used?

    laaaaaaaang haaaaire baaaaaaabie O_O

I don't get why people could be ashamed of their dolls. They all are gorgeous.

The difference between collecting doll and figures: You can interact and change the appeareance and poses of your dolls, base them on someone who existed (real or not) or make a full new story for them.

Figures are premade, and will alway be the same, they are really cute too (specially nendoroid, wich i love) but unless they are a Figma or similar they can't pose nor change.

I "try" to collect both. hohohoho

Oh man I don't understand the facination with Blythe dolls ... they are insanely creepy with the disportionate head/face ~ gives off a chuckie vibe?

Mamachapp dolls are pretty much the the opposite of Blythe ~ they are very cute

Dolfies look pretty nice overall if you have clothing that hides their joints ~ of which the anime versions such as Saber Kanu etc make use of costuming very nicely. I guess it all comes down to the finishing and the skill level of the artist putting one together from scratch ~ as the skill of putting together clothing, hairstyle and make up make up a lot of the asethics of this genre of hobby. Everyone of course has their own vision of beauty tho ~ as you can obviously see with Blythe Dolls ... *shudder*

As for me i need more input not output in paycheck
    *sigh*

Nice selection of dolls here. :3 Am I the only one who likes Blythes?
The Japanese aren't the only ones who don't think Barbie's cute. I think she's somewhere between "slut" and "airheaded mall-crawling bimbo".

The Iron Man photo would be perfect if he were holding a bottle of Jack Daniels instead of a microphone.

I want those small buckles and fixings! I tried looking, but I really can't find any of those here. *sob*

Nice wigs and great face-ups on some of the Neo-Blythes. I'm not so much a fan of petite Blythes.

This dolls are worth the price. I mean I've seen several replicas here in our country but you can see in the picture the difference of being original!
