Doll Show 25 took place yesterday at the Tokyo Trade Center in Takeshiba. You can easily get there from Hama Matsucho station on the JR Yamanote line.

Been to many figure events over the past few years. Most of what I saw was the same thing again and again - especially the Garage Kits. And as for the new PVC releases - I see figures nearly up to a year before they are announced anyway and limited editions just arrive on the doorstep. This is one of the reasons I don't (need) to attend figure shows as much as I used to as I can still bring you the exclusive goodies ^^;

But the Doll Show was a completely different experience - optical eyes wide open with tons to see and buy.

I don't think I've ever used up more than 4GBs for photos in a single event before ^^
Coverage will be separated out into a few posts. Today we are going to look at Dollfie, Dollfie related and 60cm related goodies. Blythe etc to come later.
Many of the photos turned out crappy as I struggled to get decent shots in the florescent lighting.

Not sure how many people attended the show but the queues outside pretty much disappeared by 11:30 - opening time was at 11.

What they done was to guide folks to each of the 3 floors and then put a freeze in place until everybody was in the building. Once everybody was in, they lifted the freeze and let folks move between floors - until then, everybody had to stay where they were. Would have sucked for folks lining up early for a limited edition on the 3rd floor but was initially guided to the 5th floor.

Today only 3 floors were used but there are usually 4 floors where one floor is for folks to display their dolls and take pics.

Doll Show title=

One of the notable things I noticed about folks in the doll world - there are many cute lady doll seamstresses! As I was walking about inside I was like "huh?" Wha?" "Wow!"

Most attendees seemed to be aged 27 and over-ish. Ratio was 50/50 for men/women.

The profile of men was diverse from young trendy guys through to otaku ruck-sack types.
Ladies ranged from lolita apparel to designer types to OL's.

I notice many male doll collectors on DC too and thought I'd do a poll to see a breakdown of whose who.

Doll Show title=

Volks have their on show at Big Sight next week called "Doll Party" but were at the Doll Show looking for Dollfie Nanoha parents.

Doll Show title=

Personally not a fan of her white kit but think that shes got a cute face. Was considering getting just the body and head on yahoo Auction where somebody is giving her up for adoption for 40,000 yen - no wig or uniform included.

Doll Show title=

Some lovely wigs.
Picked up a load of business cards from sellers and even made a Volks related contact - a Dollfie Giveaway for you soon?!

Cant remember who's who so just picked out a few sellers worth visiting online.

Doll Show title=

DD (Dollfie Dream) Yukino.

Doll Show title=

Some leather boots n shoes for 60cm dolls (which include Dollfies).

Doll Show title=

24,000 yen for the boots - cost you more than human sized boots.

Doll Show title=

For folks who want to encourage their daughters to smoke.

Doll Show title=

Even the ashtray has ash in it. 800 yen for this set of Marlhoro cigarettes by Doll Interia.

Doll Show title=

I've been mainly following the Dollfie Dream stuff so am not familiar with any other brands including Super Dollfies.

Doll Show title=

More stuff that costs the same as human sized ones. These are eye patches. May need one soon.

Doll Show title=

Table O leggings.

Doll Show title=

Kanu with Dynamite Body DD as Motoko.

Doll Show title=

More DD stuff - nothing as nice as what Chun is making for me though ^^;

Doll Show title=

More footwear.
Acronym time.
DD = Dollfie Dream
MSD = Mini Super Dollfie
SD = Super Dollfie
BJD = Ball Jointed Doll
SAD = Suddenly Acquired Dollfie (a free Dollfie from a sponsor).

Doll Show title=

I stopped at this table and smiled to myself "I'm getting one!"

Doll Show title=

Music player and headphones.

Doll Show title=

Then I looked at the price of the cheapest ones - 5,800 yen. I then thought to myself "Hmmm. Looks like I'm not getting one" ^^;

Doll Show title=

The one I wanted is the pastel green one at the bottom right of the photo - 8,800 yen - you can get a real one for that price!

Doll Show title=

Looks great but am not dishing out 8,800 yen for one. Would have picked one up if it was about 3,500 yen.

Doll Show title=

Kuma-chan pantsu - 1,500 yen.

Doll Show title=

Gorgeous dress. All made to order.

Doll Show title=

From the same seller.

Doll Show title=

Forgot to ask how much but probably costs at least 3 kidneys.

Doll Show title=

At the Miruya stall looking at the wigs. Many wigs are made for Super Dollfies but they do fit on Dollfie Dream dolls too. Hmmm. Eyelashes.

Doll Show title=

Another lovely wig. My girls haven't washed their hair in months ^^; Wonder how I should go about doing it.

Doll Show title=

More footwear. These are in the 4,000 yen range.

Doll Show title=

DD. Forgot the names of them.

Doll Show title=

Hats and headbands.

Doll Show title=

60cm (Dollfie size) dolls of the Kannagi girls soon from Azone.

Doll Show title=

Dolls from the 2Heart series. The Azone dolls are more mainstream and generally cheaper than Dollfies but the quality is not as good.

Doll Show title=

When you got too much homework - you can get some equipment for your dolls to help you.

Doll Show title=

Anybody own any guy BJD's in the dannychoo.com doll community?

Doll Show title=

And to make good use of your dolls time - a Xeon quad core 34Ghz processor notebook with 32GBs of memory and a 1TB SSD - all for just 6,000 yen.

Doll Show title=

Something for your daughters to wear at night.

Doll Show title=

Silver hair looks good on Saber.

Doll Show title=

Most of the dresses are made for a standard M Bust but my girls both have L busts.

Doll Show title=

Dollfie Airi.

Doll Show title=

This Dollfie has glass eyeballs. Prefer the anime eyes.

Doll Show title=

More closeups of Nanoha.

Doll Show title=

Hmmmm. *checks back at the yahoo auction page*

Doll Show title=

Many folks do up their dolls with makeup.

Doll Show title=

The "Crazy Diamond" Battle Action Stand - 6,500 yen. Comes with extra bits to hold up the legs.

Doll Show title=

Was listening to the man next to me speaking with the dealer. "The extra arms looks like tentacles. Mufufufufu."

Doll Show title=

Wanted to pick up this dress but was all gone 30 mins after the event started. Was about 6,500 yen.

Doll Show title=

Something to dress up your daughter when taking her for an evening dinner in Ginza.

Doll Show title=

Some saddle stands and bats. Was nice to hear that the seller reads dannychoo.com ^o^
The saddle stand he makes are discreet and smaller than my other saddle stand. He said its perfect for folks who like to pose their daughters naked @.@

Doll Show title=

Mio Cosplay dollfie.

Doll Show title=

Kanu invites you to take a shower with her.

Doll Show title=

Some fold-able chairs - 6,000 yen each.

Doll Show title=

And how about some furniture for your daughters too?

Doll Show title=

Not available at Ikea and range from 2,000 yen.

Doll Show title=

If you want your musume to have softer eyes than the default then how about this custom made "Peach Pie" bust - yours for a laughable 15,000 yen.

Doll Show title=

A nurse to attend to your daily (dolphin) injuries?

Doll Show title=

Many maid gear to choose from.

Doll Show title=

Didnt watch all of Nanoha but this looks very Nanohaesque.

Doll Show title=

Optical eyes by Corkcats.

Doll Show title=

Some photos as a reference of how your daughter will look like after a transplant. Be sure to check the size of your daughters optical eyes before purchasing. Dollfie Saber takes 22mm eyes.

Doll Show title=

The last pair I got from Volks ended up in major fail - made Saber look evil! Got a pair at the show and hope they look good on Saber this time round.

Doll Show title=

For short sighted dolls - bit pricey at 2,500 yen.

Doll Show title=

Touhou brooms, rakes, swords, daggers, spears for those who want their daughters to guard the house while you is being sleeping.

Doll Show title=

For the naughty or kinky daughters.

Doll Show title=

Goth maid loli DD Kanuwants to hold your...hand.

Doll Show title=

The white dress at the bottom caters for bust size XXXL ^^

Doll Show title=

Dollfies leave their stuff all over the place - give them a bag so that they don't keep loosing stuff.

Doll Show title=

More glasses.

Doll Show title=

Cute gear.

Doll Show title=

For Dollfies that demand more firepower.

Doll Show title=

And for Dollfies who demand much more firepower.

Doll Show title=

Gorgeous eyes.

Doll Show title=

Your first date?

Doll Show title=

Your younger sister?

Doll Show title=

Mummy?

Doll Show title=

Girl next door? This is actually Asuka Langley Dollfie. I remember staring at her at a previous Chara Hobby wanting to buy her but cost about 60,000 yen. Thank the good lord for sponsors.
Speaking of the good lord - been listening to the 1.fm gospel radio channel from time to time. Has some great tunes but the commercials seem to be all about loosing weight, giving up drugs and recovering from debt ^^;

Doll Show title=

Your best friends sister.

Doll Show title=

All the girls gather for a day out.

Doll Show title=

Dollfie Ryomo Shimei. Has a sweet face with that wink. Didnt really watch the Ikkitousen series - is she supposed to be injured with one eye?

Doll Show title=

Dollfie Haruhi with a Mini SD (or DD) body as Rin Kokonoe.

Doll Show title=

And the photos I posted earlier - the girls with their new glasses and Aoi-chans new hair do.

Doll Show title=

The new stand that I picked up is less discreet too which Saber is using now. Will pick up another one at next weeks Dollpa.
Rest of the Dollshow coverage soon.

It depends. Say if you want to build your own character (makeup as well) or you want to save some money, then I will suggest you to build your own. However if you are very interested in one of the anime character particularly, then might as well save the trouble and look for one in Japanese Yahoo auction.
Of coz, building one is wayyy more fun then a completed DD. That's what I do to mine.

I also uploaded my building diary in this forum (Sorry it is in Chinese, but u can see what I did to put her together)

Forgot to mention, based on the chit-chats i had with some BJD owners here in my country. BJD's really tend to eat a good sum of dough from their parents/owners. But as far as i see it, as long as it can make your BJD cool/cute and you have a few bucks to spare then why not.

Gorgeous dresses here that there(pantsu too o.o). I'm guessing the reason they cost three kidneys is because they're purely handmade.

Amazing amount of items for them. Looks like a totally new world is being made now. If they get the Kannagi Dollfies right I doubt they will keep any in stock.

On normal photos I use like 4:3 3.5 mega pixel mode so I can take loads of pictures the full on 10 mega pixel would be too large to upload 1 let alone 35.

This looks like one of those hobbies that if you get into, you really wouldn't want to do anything else because of the cost and complexity.

As interesting as some of it looks, I'll have to be staying far away, for the sake of my bank account.

Arte Tokyo made a Rin Kokonoe doll, it looks SUPER CUTE on promo pics but it's made of soft silicon with internal wire frame, which I'm not sure I would like. It's a completely different kind of doll, and a lot more expensive too... but I did drool at these pics for a few days when I first saw them lol. It's worth looking.

The animator for this movie took nearly every shortcut in the book.
It would be ok if Blythes looked like the animated girl, but the wide heads and spooky eyes freak me out. The heads are about 100 times too big for the body as well.

    Hey Danny!
Very nice photos. To make them sparkle use Xnview.

    For Mac . . .
    http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?t=16416

    For PC . . .
    www.xnview.com

Open each photo and do an Automatic levels and automatic contrast. It works so well.
I've applied this to some of the above photos and they look hugely better!
Xnview is my standard image viewer.

You're using the same camera as mine. I think you need to change to landscape picture style, looks like you're using portrait. This applies to when you use TV and AV.
Look at page 67 of your Canon manual.
You may want to try User Def and up the sharpness to 8 and increase color saturation.
The camera comes out the box set on Portrait style and I was disappointed with my shots until I changed it to Landscape. Now I'm happy. Hope you will be too.

I tend to shoot with ISO 100 all the time, that compensates for the extra sharpness.
The reason they reduce the sharpness for portrait style is due to the general feeling that a certain amount of blurring is needed to hide small facial hair, defects and skin blemishes. So I recommend only using it for portraits with not much backdrop, else landscape is the way to go.

On my first corporate photoshoot with my old 350D I left my ISO setting on 1600, and everyones' faces turned out dotty. {:O
Another trick for indoor florescent light is to alter darkness compensation. Hold down the AV button (above the WB button) and rotate the main dial to the right. About +2 should do, but check while shooting. Normal light outside I shoot at -1, that's because Canon cameras tends to shoot overexposed slightly. I never use Full Auto mode, except as a last resort. Nearly always TV for outdoors, as Canon's auto mode is a few steps too bright, and AV for still objects. I use auto macro for closeup objects, and AI servo for insects.

        TV 10 - 20 with 580EX Flash - dark indoor conditions
TV 40 with flash - normal indoors
        TV 80 - outdoors overcast
        TV 160 - partly cloudy
TV 400 - sunny with a part shade
TV 800-1000 - sunny to very sunny

Metering - spot only, use top right AF point selection button and cursor keys or set to change spot focus.

        WB
shade for indoors and overcast outdoors
AWB for outdoors - slight overcast to sunny
Flash or AWB when using 580EX

Use Adobe RGB when there's a lot of blue in a shot.

I'm enjoying your photos a lot!
Did notice your problems with the above shoot though while I was browsing them.

Aargh. Looking at those glasses, I'm either 1000 yen off or a full 2000, depending on which booth you got them at! Bugger.

It looks like you've got all kinds of goodies available at those doll shows. Lol, it's a good thing there aren't any near me; I'd spend SO much money!

Still, I really really do want a Dollfie of my own. The characters on the top of my priority list are all female, though a couple guys are on my list too. The guys will probably be Obitsus with the male chestplate if I ever get around to making them, while the girls will most likely be DDs. Since DDs are shorter than Obitsus, it works out pretty well actually. ^_^

Man the contest question is way to easy now. I'm pretty sure I could have gotten the answer pretty much on the dot after seeing this.

I've seen those glasses sold millions of times before for $10 or less, so I based my contest answer on that, but that doll show stand is a complete rip off at nearly $26. Yeeeesh.

My guess is probably wrong now, even though I think I know the exact maker and model of that wig, my guess is now wrong because of that seller overcharging.

While I can appreciate the work put in to design these dolls; especially the clothing and accessories, I can't help but be turned off by these things. With that being said, you should have had a spot on the poll for "not interested". I'm also surprised at the price of a lot of the accessories. I could purchase a small car for the price of a few girls and extras.

I also think having watched Child's Play and Demonic Toys in my youth really makes me feel more creeped out by their appearance than I should be. ^_^. I will admit the one posted by out guest blogger and others with a gothic look to them are nice.

Did I spy a pilot cap + goggles? Forget the dollfies, I want a pair for myself...! 8D

Ehem. That aside, I think it'd be neat to get a boy DD/SD/whathaveyou for myself. Female dolls (and figures) are so much more prolific than they are, so it'd be neat to have something a little less common! But even disregarding dollfies and their ilk being prohibitively expensive, I found I don't like the faces/clothes on the few male dollfies I've seen. Too... effeminate and wispy, which I suppose works fine for some gals, but I'm not a huge fan of the look. If I could only get my paws on one without such a shadowed look in their eyes, with a nice Victorian-era frock coat and glasses...

And on your poll question; the only doll I have is a 25cm Azone Yuno (from Hidamari Sketch). Perhaps smaller and less articulate than Volks' 60cm products, but she's adorable nonetheless! It was hard enough getting myself to ponying up the cash for her, though, so purchasing anything larger still seems like a long ways off, boo.

I have two male dolls, one came with a cigarette and hand specifically made to hold it, so it would be nice to have those cigarettes if I ever lost mine.
I wish accessories weren't so expensive. I can't even justify paying $60 for pair of shoes, so one of my dolls just wears bunny slippers.

The girl in image (ID#25877) is really cute. Maybe I want her outfit in my size more than I want the doll though. XD

As far as wigs go...I've never washed mine, but apparently you can buy wig shampoo for dolls. As long as they're not handled a lot, it's probably fine to go without washing them. If they get dusty I just used compressed air to clean them off. :x

it's a bloody damn pity you didn't manage to get the dress in pic #25885. LOL @ the expensive headphones. zenbu wa takai ne!

i envy your ability and freedom to continue spending in the current climate, especially on Dolfie stuff that costs more than their real-life counterparts. boots at $240 is mind-boggling enough to me, let alone mini ones for Dolfies. hand-made or not, it's simply too expensive a hobby IMO.

maybe i'll pick it up in old age when i've retired and w/o a partner, haahha!

Dolfies look a little too freaky to me. I mean, I used to like Battle Angel Alita a lto, and she was a android, so I guess thats kinda similar. But Alita was a lot cuter..

Nevertheless, an amazing and staggering amount of accessories ! But that's Japan !

but dollfie is such an expensive hobby. all those accessories.... you can even get some bigger cupboard and style them to be a miniature room for your dollfie, complete with the furnitures. using transparent paper or acrylic for the windows and transparent side, with a small LED light or something for the lighting. awesome.

having a dollfie indeed is as expensive as having a real daughter, eh? they can even smoke marlhoro and lucky stbike -_-; and contrary to what happens in most anime, I didn't see any Glico Pocky boxes there >.<

Oh so not cool.... all these pictures... when I've actually got enough spare cash to buy one... Might look into an azone MSD body and the lovely Mabel MSD head. Love her... its $353 for the body and head face up. But I'm not sure how easy posing normal dollfies would be as opposed to Dollfie dreams... I thought about a MSD DD body and the Mabel head... but I don't know if attaching the heads would be any different... MSD's are only 47cm tall. But thats big enough for me, and doesn't cost as much as 60cm Dollfies.

Damn.. I put 'intrested in dolls' for the pole but I technically have dolls already... just not the 60cm kind... I have the 27-30cm kind.... small..

Any plans to do a post of the moron's guide to dols? I get confused by the different scales (DD, SD and whatever) and I don't really understand what you mean by anime eyes being better than glass eyes. They all look glass to me. =/

      DD is Dollfie Dream.
      SD is Super Dollfie.
      MSD is Mini Super Dollfie.
      MDD is Mini Dollfie Dream.
      .
      .
Basically Dolls sizes break down by scale. SD, and DD both fall into the 1/3 scale, and are usually in the range of 60cm tall. MSDs and MDDs are 1/4 scale and are usually in the 45cm range.
      .
      .
Eyes can be made of different materials. Acrylic, Silicone/soft glass, Glass are some of the more popular materials. Some eyes, silicon ones do this the most, refract light out in such a way that it looks like the eyes are following you. I've never seen an Animetic eye in person, but I guess that the name describes how the eye itself is painted.

Very neat show, lots to see there thats for sure. as far as washing their hair.. I'd say wash it.. and let it air dry. but, poor Aoi and Saber will be bald for a bit while their wigs dry. get some hats at that point don't want self conscious dolls.

Well still waiting on Illya.. I'm getting really anxious, the tracking system says the 30th so tommorrow she should be here. I really hope so. some of the clothes I bought her have already arrived which boogles me, and I ordered a new wig too. can't wait to play ^_^

Plan to enter the lottery for the Rin Tohsaka at Volks USA attempt to get her so Illya won't feel alone for too long.

Well, honestly.. I think since your in the states.. Volks USA website. A basic DD is fairly expensive. The Ladies at the store are super helpful, I've called them a ton of times just to ask questions about sizes of clothes and general dollfie questions. I'd start there.

Thanks, I'll take a look at their site. I was looking at the Volks JP site quite a lot trying to figure out stuff. I kinda wish I didn't miss the ball-joint panel that was held during my anime club's convention a few weeks ago. I'm sure there were several dollfie owners there too.

*waves hand* I'm a doll owner, got six of them so far.

For washing your girls' hair. I use regular shampoo on my doll wigs, then carefully hang them so they don't lose their form while air-drying.

In defense of the Azone girls? The bodies they are on are the new 50cm obitsu body that went on the market within the past year or so. Trust me, they are not a lower quality doll. Smaller, yes, lower quality not in a million years.

For a small idea of what a 50cm body can do completely unaided?

No Doll Shows in Wales...no Dolpas in Europe either :wah: I have a boy BJD, a Volks SDC Kurt, but I have far more girls than boys :) In the resin BJD hobby boy dolls tend to be more popular than female ones, there are many female collectors who specialise only in collecting boys.

I have those exact same Kuma-chan pantsu lol. I feel I recognize many of the sellers from Yahoo auction ^_^"

Regarding the Kannagi dolls from Azone, I'm pretty sure they will be 1/6 scale, the PureNeemo Flection body is 25cm tall.
It's a new body that's used for the new Pipikaratto line and ExCute line will also start using that body with the Secret Wonderland theme. They are cute dolls.
