Jobs in Tokyo
Its that time again - I'm looking for a full time developer to work with us at Mirai Inc in Tokyo to start in December 2009 or Jan 2010. Hope you don't mind me recycling this post (from Mon 2009/04/20 05:03 JST) as all the qualifications are the same.
As with many startups, we've been though some stormy seas but finally things are starting to really pick up.
We have many clients all in the Japan, game, anime and related merchandise industry waiting in line to use our flagship product Mirai Gaia.
Any of our clients could use anything or any other company for their online solutions but they have specified that they want to work with the dannychoo.com brand and most importantly - with you the reader too.
Qualifications, work benefits and contact info further down the page. Look forward to hearing from you!
Ah, mentioned it quite a few times before but having an online portfolio and examples of your previous work will help us in making decisions.
Look forward to hearing from you!

Went to Ikea to pick up your table, chair and lamp today. Now that the office is ready for the 4th staff member, all that remains is to find you. Qualifications written up towards the end of the photo article.

The first step was to rearrange the office which I done last weekend and the next step was today - to go to Ikea to pick up the table etc. This is where the car comes in very handy indeed.

Seen a few folks stick neko mimi and rabbits ears on their helmets but didn't manage to take a photo until today.

Arriving at Ikea in the morning at about 10:30AM-ish. If you don't want to spend all day lining up just to pay then get there before noon.

Checking out. They had just one salt container for all customers. *Generally* Japanese food places don't have salt or pepper on the table - they do have soy sauce though.
In the many cases where I asked for salt, the waitress usually comes out of the kitchen with salt on a small plate. Do try it when you are in Japan next - say "Shio Kudasai" (Salt Please).

And this was out lunch. Quite nice. One of the plates was 99 yen.

Waiting for the glass table with some 50 yen ice cream.

Vika Artur (4,000 yen) are what I use as legs for the table.

And this is the 150cm x 80cm frosted glass table called Vika - 9,000 yen.

And here is your chair. Ah, well it was originaly going to be your chair but I decided to spoil myself and keep it for me ^^;

The Markus chair cost a bit over 20,000 yen.

If you believe that this should be your table then please send your resume to [jobs at mirai dot fm] and attach your resume *in Japanese* for the following position:-
I am looking for a seasoned front end web developer (for immediate-ish employment) who has backend experience and fits the description of the following to work for me at Mirai Inc:-
-Is proficient with PHP/ImageMagick and has experience working with templating systems.
-Has experience with API's like Amazon, Flickr, Twitter etc.
-Familiar with MYSQL and understand topics like MYSQL Injection.
-Has experience with XSLT or can look at the code and understand whats going on.
-Has experience in building web applications using the MVC model.
-Has experience with various version control systems.
-Is a Mac or Linux user or can easily manipulate these systems.
-Is experienced with frontend technologies such as CSS, HTML, JQuery.
-Has experience with Fireworks, Photoshop, Illustrator and Flash (parsing XML with Flash for example).
-Has experience with the command line.
-Has experiencing compiling, building and installing packages on unix systems.
-Has experience with server administration (VI, setting up Crontabs, Permissions etc).
-Has experience developing or using various CGM systems.
-Has a blog or twitter account or demonstrates a good understanding with the issues of these medium.
-Can demonstrate ability to produce mockups in Fireworks or Photoshop and export elements to XHTML.
-Mainly looking for a front end dev so if you are missing out on a few backend requirements then please still apply if you feel that you are a ninja on the frontend dev.
By looking at the above list you may have guessed that its a description of my own skill set - I need you to be my clone ^^;
Like many technical folk, my skills were self taught with our friend Google sensei. Tuition fee is free but you need to be motivated to self study and not be like Yui-chan from K-ON! in ep03 ^^;
-You need to be well versed in Japanese - at least JLPT level two or equivalent speaking/reading and writing skill. If you can read most of the Japanese version of this post then you qualify for this requirement.
-I'm not concerned with your educational background and don't care if you have been to school or not. Whats important is that you can demonstrate that you can do the job.
As a hiring manager at Amazon, I learned that previous education wasn't important and that the ability of the candidate to demonstrate that they could do something was key. I saw many hiring mistakes at Amazon of people with MBA's or PHD's - well educated but failed to perform.
I need people to be able to hit the ground running from day one.
Having said that, I'm not saying that its not important to go to school - I'm saying that education is not a criteria I take into consideration when deciding who to interview. How silly do I sound when I say "Ah! Shes Been to Tokyo University - she must be good."
Unfortunately most HR and Managers *do* take your previous schooling into consideration and put more weight on it rather than previous experience.
-However, if you are not a Japanese resident (has visa to stay in Japan permanently) then you need a university degree in a technical field as that's one of the requirements for a sponsored visa.
-I would prefer folks who are interested in Japan and Otaku subculture.
One of the reasons why I set up Mirai Inc was so that I can enjoy the remainder of my life while doing the stuff that I enjoy - and at the same time being involved with clients who produce stuff that I'm interested in - anime, figures, games and what have you.
If the candidate is interested in these subjects then she or he will enjoy the job even more and fit in better with our company culture.
-Compensation is based on current level of experience.
-The standard benefits are covered including travel expenses, health insurance and pension.
-You will also get free figures, anime merchandise, games, gadgets and a lot more stuff that our clients throw at us ^^;
-Work location is in Meguro Tokyo.
-Working hours are from 10am to 6pm.
-No overtime pay as it is not expected.
As a manager at Amazon, I drew a pie chart that my staff started to call "Danny's Pie" which if you say very fast could be made to sound like "Dannys Oppai."
The pie is divided into three - each piece is 8 hours. Presuming that you work 8 hours and sleep for 8 hours then you have 8 hours remaining which is one slice of the pie. I then start to cut up the remaining piece.
The 8 remaining hours is needed for things like personal hygiene, nourishment intake, health care (very important), cleaning, commuting and other chores which are important in life but generally don't contribute a whole lot to your career or personal development.
If you subtract the time needed for all the above from the final piece of the pie then all you would have left each day is 4-ish hours which you need to use on spending with friends/loved ones, entertainment/recreation and personal development - learning a new subject, beefing up current skills, researching etc.
Now imagine that you spent more than 8 hours at work. In order to do the other stuff, you would either have to sleep less or start to drop some of the other stuff. Some folks with long work hours drop "personal development" which I consider to be crucial to the development of an employees life, career and well being.
Its is in my interest to make sure that my staff are of good well being and just as happy as I am with work and life.
-You will also get to network with the top players in the Japanese Internet space, anime, figure and game companies, TV production crews etc. Growing your network is extremely important when building your career.
While I would love for you to work with me for as long as possible, I am under no illusion that you will. I shall encourage and support you to build your career and mentor you so that you can also reach your destinations in life. I want to make sure that Mirai Inc provides you with the environment that enables you to grow and have a load of fun at the same time.
We work hard and play hard at Mirai Inc and beleive that we are making a difference in the Japanese Internet field.
We are looking for somebody who has a bright personality, is not afraid to ask and knows when she or he is wrong.
We need candidates to question current processes and speak out to provide alternative solutions as to how things can be changed for the better.
Mirai Inc members frequently appear in magazines, on TV and give talks to large audiences. We need somebody who does not mind representing us from time to time in these mediums.
Apart from the coding, we do other things like attend figure, anime and other otaku subculture events. You may be asked to go with press pass in hand to cover the event. If you are interested in Otaku subculture then doing this would not feel like work - even though it is ^^
As a small company, there may be other chores that I may ask you to do. My personal chores include cleaning the staff toilet, hoovering the floor, polishing the tables and dusting down the girls. You may be asked to fold boxes from the daily sample arrivals for example. I'll continue to do the toilet cleaning for the foreseeable future though ^^
I have always employed open communication since my years at Amazon. This means that we all agree to say whats on our mind no matter what it is - especially for sensitive subjects. Open communication means that we avoid misunderstandings and feel better about something that maybe nagging in our minds.
Employees are required to speak their minds on any subject no matter what it is.
You will be working in a team to build a product that wants to change Japanese Internet history - the name of the product is Mirai Gaia.
I cannot acknowledge receipt of all resumes received. If you don't get contacted by me it doesn't mean that you don't meet the requirements - because you *will* meet the requirements otherwise you wont be sending me your resume. I will file all resumes and consider candidates for future openings.
In the near future I will be looking for Account Managers and Program Managers but please do not send resumes for these positions - you have not seen the job description yet ^^
I think thats about it - am I forgetting something? Probably so just ask in the comments and check the comments before asking.
We look forward to working with you!

The view to my right - yes you sit next to me ^^; My farts have been hax0rd to disperse at a radius of 50cm so you are safe ^^;;
If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.
If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

WOW. awesome workspace! would probably be hard to concentrate with all the figures around...
as for the qualifications, i probably only qualify for about a third on the list >_<
good luck to whoever is qualifying!
Student
Looks like it's time for me to start learning MySQL, PHP, and all that ^^" Just kidding, it'll be like a million years before I become proficient at all of that... Japanese would probably help too -__-
If you need a finance/accounting intern or something though... just sayin'. XD Except I guess I don't really have much knowledge/experience with that either since I've only taken math/econ courses so far >_>
Also yay for Ikea! I love how they have cheap food :P

Ah! A fellow Finance/accounting major! Fufufu, I don't need to take those math/econ classes since my AP credits were luckily accepted xDD;; Which major do you like better?

ah man i sucked at my AP math test but did fairly good in AP government, wait i'm not doing anything related to government! Zetsuboshita!!!!

Awww, I got all 4&5s on my AP tests ^^;; Calc BC was waaaay too much fun to be work <33
Planeswalker
Was calc BC hard? I'm dying in precal this year. (T.T unusual) I think I am gonna take that next year.
I am a sophomore right now so there's still ways to college and a major to decide on, and being asian, you want to be a doctor or a businessman. I still don't really get how the APs work but i guess it saves you time in college, so I'm probably taking 12 by the end of High school (I'm taking European History, Chemistry, and Art History APs this year).
Student
BC isn't hard but its fast paced. Calc is definitely easier than pre-calc, as weird as it sounds. Once you grasp the concepts the rest is smooth sailing...or fun as Ayu says.
Student
Well I'm actually a math major with specialization in economics ^^" I've been thinking about minoring in accounting though... not sure if I have time to squeeze it in though since I'm graduating in like a year and there's quite a few courses they want you to take for the minor :/ I passed my math/econ AP courses too except that just covers most of the lower division stuff... taking a bunch of upper division courses now ^^
Kagamin's Waifu
http://moorina.deviantart.com/
Ohh yea... Accounting is awesome though <3 I wish I could major in math, economics, finance and accounting since I love them all, but then I wouldn't be able to graduate in 4 years T_T

NEET part-time - Technical Support Officer - Network security engineer
http://burugureibi.blogspot.com/
*sigh*
Well, looks like i'm out - I'm a Network engineer, not a Web developer.
Better luck next time.
Funny that, i'm still considering whether to buy the MARKUS or KLAPPE - How does it feel?
I need to replace my high back version of the MOSES - I've ripped up the faux leather seat pretty badly ><"""
I love how Ikea lays out their stores - It's like walking through a storybook of "How to live your life". You got small 'scenes' of your life all set up and looking nice on your right and the individual pieces to 'build' that life on your left - And that you're forced to walk through the ENTIRE store, it's like the store is saying "See? This is how your home SHOULD look like" thrown into your face each time you step through into the next department.
Then you get to the end where it's "Here's all that big stuff that you can never reach OR carry back home yourself. But hey! we'll show it to you anyway."
yeah... i've had my fair share of good and bad experiences at Ikea

i have a couple of questions which are (stress)barely(/stress) related to this post for danny (as well as the rest of the community).
i am currently studying web design and related technologies (html, css, JS, sql, php, etc) and i was wondering if any particular materials such as books/articles stood out during your early years experimenting with the web that were influential/guiding. for example, I remember seeing your post with you and hector, with hector holding up a book called scalable websites (or some similar title).
also wanted to know what programs you often use (or find essential) when web developing on a mac (i saw you older posts with stuff like double take, smultron, paparazzi,...just wondering if much has changed.

I second asianmoviereviews' request for guidance. I have been somewhat interested in creating web pages and such, but I have no idea where to start. I bow to your superior knowledge, and seek to be your student.
College Student/Web Designer
I fit quite a few of the requirements but I'm starting up college again in-order to go after what I really want to do in life. Just not sure what to have as Major/Minor.

I wish I could say that I fulfill the requirements, but I can't. I have a little experience in C++ and Java coding, but I know that's nowhere near what you're looking for. So I'll say Good Luck to those with the skillz to do so and a Good Luck to Danny in finding the right person for the job. ^o^//

Cool article, but it makes me laugh and cry at the same time :P
That job, is pretty much exactly what I want to do in life. All the PHP web development, rolling out platforms, etc etc.
Problem is Im probably less than 10% on the way to getting there. Got my PHP, MySQL and Apache books etc. but theyre kinda just sitting around cause Im working my ass off doing ASP.NET for my current employment. I also dont live in Japan yet, which is something I want to do for at least 3-5 years. Got a blog, but have not made time to write anything recently, which is the easiest way to kill traffic, and let a blog die. Just started 2 japanese courses last week actually, but obviously I cant speak the language yet. So, Im far away from that skillset at the moment, but its already something I have determined to achieve!
Sorry for the ramble people, just felt like getting it out. No excuses though, you either get the job done, or you dont, and to any employer, thats all that matters, so its ASP.NET for me for now. Maybe call you up in a few years time when I am working in Japan, Danny :P

I miss out on Flash, Illustrator, Fireworks, Version Control, Amazon and Flickr API's but I've used Twitters, CGM - not sure what refers too, and VI. Nice revamped office you have there.

As for me? I'm not an IT guy, so I'll think of something else to come to Japan. ;)
And finally, great minds think alike, Danny! I ALWAYS wanted to get my hands on that IKEA Markus chair, everytime I visit IKEA I would always try out that chair.
Right now I'm still hesitating whether I should splash out that amount of cash, but for the sake of comfortable surfing of the internets, perhaps I should.

Looks like I will be getting the Markus chair. Been looking for a new chair for ages. Spent £20 on the last one and will never go cheap again.
A question for Danny also:
How is the glass table top secured to the legs? I'm asking because we are having a loft conversion which may mean I get a room to myself. I've been needing a decent workspace, and your idea doesnt seem too bad.

Good luck in finding a suitable new Mirai member Danny. ^^
I like the 'Danny's Pie' you mentioned (Danny's oppai sound good too but then you'd be a trap.) in the sense that people shouldn't cut into their other time, certainly if it isn't worth it.
I've been neglecting getting enough exercise and studying for Japanese class due to increased hours at work I'm not getting paid for and actually not rewarded for either. Had a very dissatisfying day where I feel I was verbally and mentally abused even though I'm the only one who works that hard and actually cares about the work. So I plan on putting a stop on giving them that extra time of my life if they can't give me courtesy or proper recognition.

I don't have any of those technical qualifications lol. And I may never since I'm going into bio-related stuff. :P Good luck to those who are applying.
Grad Student
I wish I was in Japan, I would so be applying for this. Of course if I was in Japan, probably my Japanese wouldn't have degenerated from JLPT1 level to its current state (I probably couldn't pass the 4 if I took it today), though I'm sure I could get it back quickly if I had reason to.
Surprisingly even though I am a physics grad student i fit most of the criterion. It pays to manage all of the department's web pages, even if they won't let me make them good (they insist that I not change them overly much from how they were when I came, so they still look sucky T_T).
Of course I would probably lose on experience grounds anyway... I've always thought it's kind of irritating that to get the jobs you want that get you the experience and networking to get the jobs you want, you have to have had one of the jobs you want! I have yet to find a hole in this paradox.
Student
I don't think it is strange that a physics grad. student fullfills most of the requirements. I myself also meet most of them, and know a few others at physics which also does. I think physics has a way of attracting the technical geeks :)
It's also good to have a larger set of baseskills when one graduates. I'll propably end up with a job in the field of programming/computer science in the end. I don't see that many job openings for physicists here (Though I would very much like to work with something in my major field).

Since there's no IKEA here in indonesia, I really like to try my hand on building them myself, since they look pretty simple to do

i'm more like "the backend guy", i have decent skills in php (mostly self taught), but my designing skills is somewhat "crude", and given the fact that i'm still a beginner in japanese (still very far away from JLPT lvl.2), i won't be joining your team any time soon, Danny...
well, maybe sometime in the future...
BTW, you forgot to mention the maximum acceptable age for the position, surely you wouldn't want to employ someone too old for the job? i think, being too old to apply raises the question about the applicant's own health (of course, needless to say, being physically and mentally healthy is required, right?)

Aw, I would have loved giving this position a shot, unfortunately I don't have the Japanese proficiency : I've taken 3 years of Japanese in high school but didn't continue for a 4th year mainly because the college I went to didn't need a secondary language requirement. Just graduating high school (and money) is good enough. So I pretty much lost touch of my Japanese. I do remember a few things when I watch anime.

Plus there's a lot about programming that I still have yet to learn. Maybe in the future one day...
so is computer science the ideal college degree that gives the right background for a web developer position? i wish i had picked something technical when i was in college...instead i did economics. really is a useless degree, at least at the undergraduate level.

Danny! Danny, Danny, Danny... Reading your expectations for the future cooperation with your empoyees I truly see that you're really kind-hearted, wise and reasonable. I admire you! And I feel sorry that the rest of the world is not like you. Really! Sometimes when I go to school I think about what would it be like if all the people were like you. Not clones of course but people with virtues and way of thinking like yours.
Your work place looks great and relaxing. Know what, you could get a some speakers and play something relaxing. That could create an atmosphere and make the empoyees and even you feel better. Probably. But maybe some folks can't work while listening to music. Still, I think it's a good idea. I wish I could qualify for the job but I'm no where near the qualifications. I wish good luck to whoever gets the job and Danny, good luck to you too AND your Company!

I have an extremely unrelated question, but maybe only a little now that I think of it.
I'm currently getting myself back in to the Web Dev field (which I've only really splashed around in the shallow end) and diving head long into Japanese studies. I'm noticing a lot of the Japanese sites with English sections that I come across don't seem to be terribly well translated, in fact they're a little nonsensical at times. I have this idea I want to float by someone (anyone?) and you seem to be someone that'd be perfect to float it by, you wouldn't mind giving it a hear out I hope?

Well, I dream't of working in an IT firm but I didn't have a chance to get a diploma or degree in any programing related studies or what not, and the thing is, I'm currently training to be an English Teacher (not that I wanted to =.=; but no choice, I'm poor, and the training course is gov sponsored). But I'm very interested in photography, web design and programming, and also interested in the Japanese language. Hope to work in an IT company like yours in the future, I think it'll be fun. =D

Just wondering about the visa issue - do ALL people need a university degree to get a working visa, or is that only for foreign companies like yours?
CEO MIrai Inc

My understanding is that one is required to show that they have completed a university course.
Student
http://www.flickr.com/photos/zapeipaa/
Checked with the embassy here, and they told me that a university degree is not a requirement to get a working visa. However, some companies may or may not hire you depending on if you have one or not. Are you sure it's a requirement for giving out working visas to people who work for your company? Maybe it's different depending on your nationality/company... :S
CEO MIrai Inc
http://www.dannychoo.com/profile/eng/
Will have a look into it again.
And love your horikita avatar.

I believe it does depend on your nationality/company. I know for a fact that US citizens cannot apply for and receive a working visa without a company in Japan sponsoring you. Australians on the other hand can apply for one (I think it's valid for 3 months?) and head over to Japan to look for a job. If they happen to find one, then their visa gets extended. Not sure what requirements Australia has for their citizens to get one though...

This is easily one of the best job descriptions I have ever read. I specifically like the bit where you don't really care about the education as long as the skills can be proven - as these days, learning stuff from Google sensei is way easier than doing it with old practices in schools. I'd love to apply for this - I really would. But I'm not quite at JPLT2 yet - I am guessing this is ultimately very important in order to understand the needs and requirements present from the customers.
I can do it all and more, but not quite there with the language yet. Will you toss my resume or should I try to impress you?

I was wondering if you knew where one could get information about unpaid internships in Japan, how should one approach a company regarding this matter? The school where I am at has no exchange student program and make no effort at all at making things interesting, I'm actually taking a gamble taking a internship and might repeat my last year but I cant waste more time here,

A job in Japan would be pretty amazing but I'm no good at all in PHP or anything of the sort. Now if you know of anyone who is in need of a video editor/camera woman/motion graphics animator, THEN that would fit me more :-p.
Anyway love the office look, really great feel! Wish my office had all those awesome figures!

If you need someone to design leaflets or something, i'm your man. I've done freelance work for nightclubs and bars for them to get more customers, and i checked back with them recently and they're doing a lot better. Just throwing it our there.
