A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Late again with this weeks A Week in Tokyo so this one covers the past few weeks.

First up is my talk at Pecha Kucha Night where I talked over 20 slides (each slide 20 seconds) about the Tokyo Stormtrooper to a room of about 300.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

So what is Pecha Kucha Night then? Following description taken from the Pecha Kucha Night site.

Pecha Kucha Night, devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (Klein Dytham architecture), was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.

But as we all know, give a mike to a designer (especially an architect) and you’ll be trapped for hours. The key to Pecha Kucha Night is its patented system for avoiding this fate. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each – giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show.

Pecha Kucha (which is Japanese for the sound of conversation) has tapped into a demand for a forum in which creative work can be easily and informally shown, without having to rent a gallery or chat up a magazine editor.
Had a great time and would like to thank Astrid and Mark for having me and Tokyo charisma blogger Jean Snow for arranging everything - t'was an honor!

Pecha Kucha Night was held at Super Deluxe in Roppongi which is where Tokyo CGM Night episode 4 will be held.

Dollfie clothes starting to gain critical mass - need a wardrobe for my daughters.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Many university students recently graduated. While folks in the west wear square hats, folks in Japan traditionally wear something called Hakama [袴].

My mum was sorely disappointed that I didn't go to rent a graduation cloak n hat to take pics. I passed with first class honors - only a couple of us managed to pass out of a group of 30-ish and I was over the moon.

However, graduation was just one piece of the jigsaw puzzle that I was collecting in order to get me closer to Japan and wearing graduation gear didn't seem important nor desired. Did you or do you plan to wear graduation kit when the time comes?

Some lovely girls in Hakama graduation kit below.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Its times like this when I say to myself "I love Japan!"
Japan Post has a service called Shuka [集荷] where they come to your house/office and collect any packages that you want to send to either domestic or international destinations. All I do is make one call and a man comes along in his van with a set of scales. He then weighs the packages and you pay him there and then.

Even if you are sending one shoebox sized package that costs the minimum of 600 yen, they will still come and don't charge extra on top. This saves me from going to the post office to queue up and waste time. Thanks to Tokyo Hunter for telling me about this incredible service. Any services like this in your neck of the woods?

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

The Gateway had a huge facelift which I needed to do to increase conversion of new visitors to regular users - and hopefully make it more user friendly for current readers too.

If you hover over links in the header/footer and various places around the site, you will notice a #ref_catfish at the end of the link. This enables me to know whether people clicked on the catfish menu, header menu etc to get to /profile/eng/ for example.
Without the ref tags (which we used at Amazon), I would have no idea how users got to that profile page which means that I don't have an understanding of what parts of the UI need to change/be removed in order improve the user experience and thus increase conversion.

Am really pleased with the changes and have been able to increase the conversion rate over the past few weeks. Welcome to all new readers!

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

And it looks like we have quite a few Korean readers have joined us too. I used to write dannychoo.com in Chinese, Japanese, Korean and English but scaled down to JP and EN due to time constraints. While I don't write articles in Korean at dannychoo.com, I do tweet at my Twitter and reply to comments in Korean occasionally.

I still cant touch type but do type relatively fast while looking at the keyboard - which means I need a Korean keyboard too. Apple make Japanese but not Korean keyboards so I need to use these Korean stickers. I usually pick up a bunch of these at the huge book store in Seoul called Kyobo Mungo.

Korean and Chinese content will start to appear over time at dannychoo.com.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Pasta n Focaccia for lunch with Index-tan.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Chuka set with Kagami.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

The top folks from Softonic were in Japan recently and we spent a few days with them. Softonic are one of the biggest downloading services in za warudo.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

The latest trend it seems - more and more sushi places can be found with the head of a Maguro placed outside. This photo is in serious need of a caption ^^;

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

The Iron man came with a dud arm - looks like glue was where it wasn't supposed to be which meant restricted movement. Opened up and managed to chip away at the glue.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

There is a Mr Donuts thats been in our neibourhood for years but have never really tried it. Went in one day to try their Pon De Ring and got hooked immediately!

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

There are a great variety of vending machines in Japan - most of them fully functional and due to Japan being relatively low in terms of crime, the machines don't have to be like the ones back in the UK.

When I was in the UK last, the vending machines had no windows, were huge and looked like they weighed 20 tonnes - presumably to prevent people taking the whole machine home or vandalizing it. Did come across many out-of-order ones. When I stick money in a UK vending machine, its like a gamble not knowing whether something is going to come out.

Vending machine tampering does occasionally happen over here however and this sign on the machine is says the owner wont tolerate it and that this machine is being monitored by a camera.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Shirasu Pizza - the white stuff is small fish. Cant remember what the green balls where but they look like rabbits droppings.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

A load of development going on at both stations near our place.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

The train track used to run through here but is now underground. I heard they were going to originally build a highway through this area.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Somebody moving into a new place nearby. The moving services over here are brilliant. We previously used Ari-san mark twice and completely recommend them.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

At the newly discovered Chinese restaurant for lunch.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Mabo Tofu lunch set. 770 yen.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

At the shotengai shopping for groceries.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Cheese chicken katsu rolls - so cute you cant bare to eat them.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

A visitor from Canada brought some maple tea for us and I got hooked. I was thinking "So this is what Canadians drink every day!"
Tastes lovely. Ran out and managed to find some at Kaldi - cost 800 yen for twenty packs. Didn't taste as good as the ones I was originally given though. Will pick up a load during my Canada trip later this year.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Taiga visits The House at the checkout. Who do you want to see here next?

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Luna and Taiga want some sweet n sour pork - called Su Buta [酢豚].

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Back at Mr Donuts again.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

In the lounge at 10pm. Gaia no Yoake is probably my most fave program on Japanese TV. Its a business documentary program which talks about things like new business trends, how business survive in tough climates etc.

This week they talked about foreign capital luxury hotels and how local hotels are competing with them.
Crackle.com has a whole episode which I watched last year about how consumers are not buying but instead sharing. Sharing is an idea that I would like to explore. So for example, the Classifieds section mainly lists things for sale but could also be used for folks who want to swap their figures too.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Index-tan and some Gyoza.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Index-tan and some ramen lunch. 600 yen.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Mr Donuts Pon De Ring!

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

At the monthly blog dinner in Gotanda. This dinner meeting for bloggers and IT folks has been going on for years and I owe a lot to it and thank the organizer Drikin for having me. Also thank top marketing man at Mozilla Japan Gen kanai for introducing me as a member. T'was through Blog Dinner that I first met Good Smile Company too.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

The folks from Skype Japan were there too giving out 1GB USB memory sticks to everybody.

The Bomberman tin was the container for the Gameboy version back in 1996. I always use this tin during networking events as it holds well over 100 business cards.
Cant find a clip of Bomberman 3 but it was probably something like this...

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

The place is held at a curry house meaning its the same dish every month.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Bloggers and IT folks who attend showcase what they have been up to every month.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Some veggies stuffed with meat for lunch with Kagami.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

A load of pastries from Costco for 890 yen. Recommended if you have not been yet as they got a load of good cheap stuff.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Got a bit of wood to prevent a saggy Mirai-chan...

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

And this is what you do - the wood simply goes in the dakimakura and is held up by clips - no more saggy young pichi pichi Mirai-chan.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Was on the top page of Hatena which is like a digg.com. Brought in a ton of traffic from Japanese users all over - many who are bloggers and became regular readers too. Of late they have been picking up on my other posts in Japanese too which is why I've been putting a lot of effort in to the Japanese version of dannychoo.com.

If you are learning Japanese, I recommend that you consider writing your blog in Japanese too as it will do wonders for your learning.
Speaking of blogs - been wondering how many of you have one?
Will write an article soon about what dannychoo.com has done for my life and how it can help to enhance and support yours too. I would not be where I am without its existence. It helps me communicate with others, learn new technologies, share my life, meet new comrades online, bring in new clients, travel the world to give talks, makes a modest amount of money and even helped me get jobs at Amazon and Microsoft. And most importantly - free figures and other merchandise ^^;

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Pasta lunch with kagami again.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Before the office layout change - some SAFS arrivals.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Sour ramen for lunch with Seto-sun.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

After dinner evening stroll - more development going on at the other station.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

For folks who don't want to wear surgical masks - Pit Stopper are plugs which go up and act as a filter in yer nostrils.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Picking up some snacks for the office. Love the white chocolate Meiji Almond ones. Check out a retro CM below.

And one from last year below.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Some sakura still blossoming. Previous photos in the Tokyo Cherry Blossom photo article.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

BLT Sando with Figma Haruhi. How many of you was able to get hold of this limited edition figma?

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Cheerleader Mikuru-chan with some black pepper prawns for lunch.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Arriving at Ikebukuro for a meeting.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

London Pub Railway Tavern. Some pubs here do decent fish n chips but no matter how hard you look, one never comes across folks who do saveloy. The first thing I want to eat when I travel back to London is saveloy n chips.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Used to work at Ikebukuro for a while. Nostalgic exploring bits that I used to walk by every day.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Tokyo is gorgeous on a warm sunny day.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

This was the day before I decided to pick up my 100 yen Dell Mini 9. All of these cost 100 yen each if you take out an E Mobile contract for wireless roaming high speed (7.2Mbps) internet access.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

On the way to the Digicraft offices with Hector to show them progress on the Mirai Gaia Order Pipeline.

Digicraft do most of the packaging for eroge companies which is a very very good thing for reasons to be disclosed soon.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

At lunch with some folks at Digicraft. We also discussed production of the Mirai Merchandise. Apart from the dakimakura cover, bed sheet and oppai mousepad, we are going to make some shower posters too.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Chicken Katsu lunch set.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Ikebukuro has a load of otaku related shops. This is a branch of Animate who sells a load of costumes ready to wear. Unfortunately photos not allowed inside.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

There is also a Volks store in Ikebukuro too. I has a look through the Dollfie stuff and pick up a few bits n pieces.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

At Bic Camera browsing around. Need to get more HDDs for backups. I saw a few members on DC who recently had HDD crashes. Do consider backing up your content. There is obviously an initial cost involved but imagine this - you lost your precious data (family photos/healthcare material/eroge) etc - you probably could not put a price on getting back that stuff - especially the family photos I mean. If only you paid 100 USD to back up your stuff in the beginning.

All HDDs will die - its just a matter of when - just like us humans.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

I think this was the West(?) exit at Ikebukuro JR station. Gorgeous blue skies.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Most of the folks in black suits in this photo are a years away from graduating. Its recruitment season in Japan where university students go out looking for jobs. A few interesting facts:-
-Most students look for a job a year before graduating.
-Students who are interviewing or joining a company on the first day have to wear something called Recruit Suits - usually a black suit and at this time of year you will often see hoards of students like this (photo source).
-Because there are so many students applying to get into any one company, entrance examinations are usually held where the main purpose is to filter the numbers down.

The lovely Aibu Saki (Zettai Kareshi) does a commercial below for Aoyama who do a load of recruit suits.

Anybody out n about job hunting too?

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Another fave dish of mine - Kaisen Yakisoba.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

I have two optic fiber connections coming into the house. I changed one of the providers to LiveDoor who are charging only 1,500 yen per month - they also give you a fixed IP for that price. For my other optic line, I'm paying over 3,000 yen just for the fixed IP! Going to use Livedoor for a bit longer before I completely switch over to them.

This screenshot is a measure of my actual speeds with Livedoor. 58.71Mbps down and 51.16Mbps up.
For those who missed it, you can see how my latest optic fibre installation went.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

At Book Off checking out the manga.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

One of my fave drinks of the moment Goma Mugi Tea. Check out the most interesting commercial ^^;

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Upgrading hardware on the Dell Mini 9 - SSD from 8GB to 32GB and Memory from 1GB to 2GB. Its about the same speed as a MacBook Air now ^^; The next photo article will be the full installation guide of leopard OSX on this lovely machine.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

For busy or elderly folks, getting groceries delivered to your doorstep is most convenient. Coop provide a service where you can order groceries online or by phone and they will deliver to you. Everything from veggies, fresh fish, milk and what have you. You need to order over a certain amount for the truck to come to your house so we share an account with our neighbor. Do you have similar services in your neck of the woods?

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Pizza lunch with the Dell Mini 9 running OSX Leopard connected to the Internets with the 7.2Mbps E mobile data card. Rather happy about this ^^; Now I can get away the house more often on the weekends. You may find me blogging from the mountains or by the beach very soon ^^;

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Aoi-chan looks after the data stick from time to time.

A Week in Tokyo 37 title=

Loving the new office layout.

I wonder, if the Pecha Kucha night was for designers, then why did you agree on presenting there? then again it's always good to network eh? ^^

about the home service post, there are courier service here that does that as well. My wife often use a postal service name zend, the charge about Php50 (a little around $1usd) to ship overnight to anywhere within the capital region.

Danny, I can't touch type either. I read the whole article, and thought it was going to be much longer. I guess most of the time was spent finding the right words to put in, and fixing the site's problem that just happen recently.

I like the idea of Pecha Kucha Night...It makes presentations more punchy and you have to be succinct (concise and precise) in presenting information.

Think will make use of this idea next time I get back onto toastmasters. :)

Musta been a long week! Took me a while to look and read through it all!

In my high school graduation I had a friend visit from Japan so I actually changed out of my graduation gown real quick. But my parents were disappointed that I changed because they wanted to take pictures of me in it...

Pon De Ring looks delish! How does it taste? Oh and do you remember what brand of maple tea it was? I'd like to try it too if I can find it here ^^; I'm usually not a tea drinker, but it sounds good.

Oh and I have that limited edition Haruhi figma! You see her often in my Saber Lily vs Haruhi comics. ^_^

Would really like a Dell Mini. Lugging around a laptop breaks my back >.< especially since it is necessary for me to bring it to school.

I blog now and then, a bit regularly back in the fall during my work term when I had evenings (or mornings, depending on my schedule) free. School got really busy but final exams end today so will be posting again in a day or two.

Will be taking Japanese lessons with my friends during the summer. Plan to post in Japanese, though it'll probably be really embarrassing since I'm just a beginner. Typing stuff is really fun and I've memorized the strokes for a number of Hiragana characters. The strokes actually help me remember them XD

Me and my friends are planning to cut holes on our long uniform pants at the knee part to make it look like some kinda jeans on the day of graduation xD

That Shuka service is awesome!! Wish we had something like that over here.. Wait no, the package would most prolly be crushed or some other calamity. Never underestimate Malaysian postal service.

Maguro head? Looks like the folks in za market is getting the Megurine Luka madness too :3

One thing bout vending machines at Japan: They're everywhere! And amazingly they all function.

Maple tea? I should get some and try it.. All I have are green tea and some Chinese tea. Would love to try another tea. ^^

Su Buta.. I'm not sure if its the same thing here, but we have those tasty sweet and sour pork here too :3 They do look alike.

Its quite unbelievable how a blog can actually earn you all that figures, friends, money etc. I never thought a blog can do such miracles. I'm planning to start on one after my exams. I'm moving after exams and I will have PC in my own room then. It feels awkward to blog when theres people around.. Yes, I had a blog ^^; Most importantly I'm gonna get myself a camera ^^

I remember you mentioning that 100yen laptop deal before. It sounds great to me. I'd need a wireless internet connection together with a laptop. So its actually a win-win deal! As for the HDDs, I only have a 500GB one.. Planning to get an external 1TB storage later.

The Coop service sounds interesting but any quality guarantee on the groceries you get? ^^; Like, only a true pro in grocery shopping would know which watermelon is good and what not. I still think its better to get them ourselves. Well, could be useful when too busy with work/eroge. Though instant ramen sounds good too.. for a short period of time.

We do have grocery delivery in the area from a service called Peapod.com.. but I've never used them. We have a store on the corner so it's hard to justify when you could just drive or walk a few blocks. It makes sense if you're in the city though, since most of the groceries I've seen there charge you to park.

US postal service will do package pickup here but you have to weigh and prepay for postage online. Actually I found out yesterday that the postal workers get some kind of credit for picking up packages, which must be an incentive not to be lazy and leave the customers hanging XD sounds silly but we have some lazy postal workers in this country and I've been victim to a few of them.

the green balls on the pizza are caper berries, they're usually preserved in salt or vinegar and used to season or dress up a dish. A little goes a long way. They're popular in Italy in a pasta dish with tuna, as well as elsewhere as a side to cold smoked salmon.

I don't blog because I am too busy and occupied with a lot of stuff lately orz.

By the way, the Dell Mini 9 looks good but there are other netbooks with better design I think.
The Dell Mini 9 comes with the 3-cell battery right? It would be better if there's a 6-cell option so that it can operate longer with having to plug it in to a wall socket for recharcing.

Maguro tabetai, maguro tabetai, picchi picchi osakana tabetai... is what I would like to say, but I can't after seeing that image.

    Some delicious looking donuts there.

Those green balls were definitely capers. They are sometimes used as pizza topping and they are used mainly in Mediterranean cuisines.

I have a blog and regularly post there. I started blogging about two months after I came here, so it's not hard to guess what had motivated me then, right? Now, it's been almost 5 months since my blog was born and I really enjoy it and I'm glad I decided to do it. It's very motivating when you know that people read what you write and like what you post. You know your work isn't useless. At this time, I can say that I don't think I'll ever begin to think about giving up blogging.

Another great episode of a week in Tokyo.

I seriously think that graduating is a step to move forward to a new environment which you wouldn't expect what comes on the next day of your daily life. Even if i did get to wear a graduation cloak, it doesn't guarantee that I would definitely get a good job in the working society.

Wow.. About the Japan postal, It seems that I really need those kind of service since I'm a person who doesn't like to queue up a line where it needs a few hours of my time just to send something.

I will be seeing you again Danny on the next CGM Night this upcoming few weeks. :)

Delivery to doorstep? Here? Dream on. >< A lot of the convenience of Tokyo comes from the fact that everything is so condensed, I think. It's simply not feasible for that kind of service to exist here - people live too far apart. The gas costs alone would be astronomical.

I actually still have Bomberman 3. The *original* party game, that series - awesome loads of fun, especially since you can drag in people who've never even touched a controller before.

Hmm, if you mean wi-fi, then not really secure at all. Well, if you use https://.. then it should be more or less secure to check you email or smth. But if you want security in a public wi-fi network you must use some kind of VPN solution...
Don't really know about the security of the wireless connection through mobile (phone) modem but I guess it is as secure as you mobile calls.

    Another very interesting article. :)
There are courier services here who will pick up a letter or parcel to get it delivered to any location withing the state or country. Of course, money is paid for the letter/parcel during pickup. Service charges included in the bill itself.

We have malls here that do deliver to our homes if we shop above a certain amount at a time. Plus the local mom and pop stores do give home delivery if we shop too much and buy a lot and its too heavy for a single person to carry alone. All this for free!! heh heh.

Had started blogging after reading one of your articles many moons back. Then i stopped blogging and deleted it too. It was too stressful even trying to find any article to put up on it. blogging is not for me.

We don't have that kind of tradition here in Estonia. I wore a black suit on my graduation when I got my Bsc. But we have a specific hat for every university and I wore mine at the graduation.

These articles are starting to make me hungry. I miss all the great foods I get when in Japan.

I'm happy that I have started blogging. It is long overdue project for me to learn more, experiment and put what I have learned to use. My tumblr microblog fba genesis http://funkyblueame.tumblr.com/ is nothing more than 2D girls and a few photos, but I'm surprised at the Google Analytics data. I also have a blog on posterous funkyblueame's posterous http://funkyblueame.posterous.com/ which needs some love, but has also returned good data. Eventually I want to start a WordPress blog and then move on to coding my own.

I agree about blogging in Japanese. For me it would also be covering where almost all of my traffic is coming from. Looking forward to your article on blogs.

    Need to get back to my C# project... @.@;

I have actually had a number of personal blogs over the years that covered anime, politics, and sports, but for one reason or another, I would lose interest and neglect them and eventually close my account. I suppose I just have not found what I am passionate about or that I am still too timid to put out my opinions on certain topics (i.e. - I have thin skin). But, who knows? Maybe, I will finally get over my nerves, find something I love and am knowledgeable about, and start another blog.

I miss the warm Tokyo days - it was over 20 degrees on my last day there in late March. It will be a while before I experience those temperatures again.

Looks like you eat out a lot. Or maybe it just appears that way when posting a week's worth of photos. Japanese food is a far cry from pork pies and soggy chips but if you are not careful, you might have to start blogging about exercising. Especially with all those doughnuts.

-Hakama clarification: Isn't a Hakama a man's formal divided skirt? I know women wear them too during in aikido and other martial arts, but how is that any special? The YT video under showed women in kimono, didn't show their hakama XD

-Yeah Canada Post prices are a rip off, and the service isn't much better either. The only way to lower the costs that I found was to take the entrepreneur card which is free(thank god) on the behalf of my eBay account lol. Then now I get like 10% off -_- which isn't really much in the long run.

-Damn I must be a bad Canadian, I didn't think that Maple tea existed lol. Although I drink every other asian tea (^ω^)

-Mr. Donuts doughnuts look ridiculously delicious! I want that chain here in Canada lol.

-I wish they'd stock on more Meiji snacks at my closest Chinatown! XD All I got from that picture is the Macadamia, I really like it...but thats all they got :(

-We have multiple Costo in our region, though the only problem I see with buying stuff from there, is that either you need to pork off all those big packages, or freeze them so they don't go bad. How are the Costco in Japan?

-How much is the E Mobile contract for those 100円 Laptops?

By the way nice pictures (・∀・)

Hakama is just the lower half. I believe the upper half is called a "Kote", or atleast that's what it was called in medieval times.

I do a little blogging myself, but I've been lax over the months as I'm overwhelmed with the number of spam messages I have to delete. I'm thinking of just buying a Wordpress blog spot so I can mod it. but since I've got posts on the old one, I don't want to just abandon it. I'm trying to shluff my way through deleting 24000+ messages 20 at a time, but it's just a little overwhelming. :(

I just have to say Danny that I love these photo journals. About 7 years ago I spent one night at a hotel in Japan on my way to South Korea and I had a very strange feeling of Deja Vu; I have been in Japan before but it must have been in another life. This sparked my interest in all things Asian and having your website is a fantastic way for me to relax after a hectic day at work. Being a Scot I wanted to know if any Scots had done good things in Japan and and learnt about a guy called Thomas Blake Glover. So please tell me, is he actually well known in Japan?

    Cheers!

Let us know which Canadian city you are visting? We would love to show you around.

(As a frequent reader, I would really like you to blog about how young Japanese people are dealing with the recession, or what the average Japanese thinks about their future. Or how Japan relates to its Asian neighbors.). In Canada, I watch both the Western News (CNN, etc) and the Chinese (from HK) and it is really different how they see the same issues (for example Tibet)

I know anime and stuff is your focus... but I would like to know how it fits into Japanese environment.

I'm a software developer too and also not an accomplished touch typist. I am effective enough with my abilities but I often feel embarrassed by my lack of touch typing skills, especially when working opposite somebody who is a good typist. This kind of sentiment - which I largely agree with - does not help much:

We Are Typists First, Programmers Second
    http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/001188.html

I've been doing less and less coding in recent years, which doesn't help. After many years in software, however, I really should be an accomplished typist. I am currently forcing myself to practice touch typing on a daily basis. Here's the learning link I'm using:

    http://www.typeonline.co.uk/lesson1.html

Do you ever feel embarrassed about your lack of touch typing abilities?

That Dell Mini 9... how comfy is the keyboard? I looked at a similar sized netbook (HP, a real nice aluminum version!) but decided to think about it for a while. Although I will not be buying a netbook as my primary computer, I still like a nice keyboard. If the keyboard is lousy, the netbook would end up being a paperweight and that's not the best use of my money...

A 10 inch netbook seems much better sized to me but does cost more and weight a bit more...

    Sadly I've still not made it to a Pecha Kucha night... they have this odd habit of falling on work nights or when I've got massive assignments due ^^;

Last semester we had to keep a Blog as part of our assessment, detailing our concept development and group work. Our group took a fairly laid back approach to the whole thing and wound up really enjoying it. I've kept promising myself I'll get one since then but... procrastination rules. Funny how work practices differ from country to country. Unless something comes up I really don't intend on going straight to work after uni, want to go see the world a bit first, get out of the rat race, FIGHT THE MAN! =P

There's a few home delivery services around here. One that we use delivers Australian produced stuff aiming to help support local industry. The other one that was really good was called "Food Connect". It was a subscription service and you had to pick up your box of food from a local depot. Basically it cut out the middle man, so each box you got contained locally grown, organic produce straight from the farm. Everything was seasonal of course, but included was also a news letter with information on how to best utilize what was in the box each week, recepies and stuff. Now though we just go out to the growers' markets at City-Farm on a sunday morning.

Costco does have cheap pastries! I don't have my own membership, but I often go there with my mom. I'll probably sign up once I move out (after graduation). My parents have the Costco American Express card. Is something similar offered in Japan? About twice a year we get "rebate" checks from all of the money we have made by using their credit card. It's a great rewards program.

Ikebukuro looks beautiful during the day! I was only there twice, at night for shabu-shabu and karaoke.

I am about one year from graduation, and I am starting to look for jobs and explore my options. While I am interested in teaching English overseas, it does not seem like very stable or permanent option. So instead I am hoping to find a job doing editing and revising (technical or otherwise) for companies in Japan. It will take a long time until I know enough Japanese to translate, but I have stumbled across so many Japanese websites that use English, but just need some polishing.

I got a lot of Japanese friends who are job hunting since last year, and it seems trying to find a job is so much easier in Osaka/Kyoto compare to Tokyo... two of my friends in Kyoto was able to find a job within 3 months after returning from Australia; while others who had returned to Japan half a year before them are still job hunting in Tokyo, only few are lucky to have a position offered to them, but they still continue to find better positions... but most arent so lucky even though some are from well known top universities like Tokyo Tech...

Btw, danny, you should consider to upgrade your Dell mini 9 to 128GB, it would take some modification, and the SSD cost more than the price of the laptop... but it's worth the money considering the extra space and r/w speed you get from it...

Danny, that's not we're drinking in Canada, we're drinking Tim Hortons coffee! haha.
Where in Canada will you be going?

The picture where you said you thought was West side Ikebukuro is actually East...I only know because my hotel is on the east side, so I go there every day for three weeks!

"If you are learning Japanese, I recommend that you consider writing your blog in Japanese too as it will do wonders for your learning.
Speaking of blogs - been wondering how many of you have one?
Will write an article soon about what dannychoo.com has done for my life and how it can help to enhance and support yours too. I would not be where I am without its existence. It helps me communicate with others, learn new technologies, share my life, meet new comrades online, bring in new clients, travel the world to give talks, makes a modest amount of money and even helped me get jobs at Amazon and Microsoft. And most importantly - free figures and other merchandise ^^;"
