The new series of K-ON! is so good that I had to devote an article to it.
Started to read the manga only recently - picked up the first edition, watched the first anime EP and then went out to get the second edition last Friday.

Some folks may see some of the screenshots as spoliers so if you don't want to be spoilt then check back another day.

K-ON! title=

In Japan, there are after school activities called Bukatsu [部活] which can range from Judo, Kendo, Tennis etc. The folks who rather go home at 3PM are called Kitakubu [帰宅部] meaning "the group that goes home."
The video below is from a school promoting their Bukatsu activities.

K-ON! title=

"K-ON" is the same pronunciation for "Keion" which is short for "Keiongaku" [軽音楽] meaning "light music."

K-ON! title=

The "Keion-bu" [軽音部] is a bukatsu for students who wish to learn and play musical instruments.
Didnt have such after school activities back in the UK which was a shame. I can see how bukatsu gives students the opportunity to learn while building relationships with classmates. Are there such activities organized by schools in your neck of the woods?

K-ON! title=

K-ON! starts off with the music activity group (Keion-bu) about to be abolished due to a lack of participants. There needs to be at least four members of the group in order for the school to maintain its existence.

This girl is Ritsu Tainaka - the drummer and the leader of the Keion-bu. She tries to gather the four members needed to keep the keion-bu alive.

K-ON! title=

This is sweetie Tsumugi Kotobuki who plays keyboard. While we don't learn much about her in EP1, folks who read the manga will know that shes actually an Ojosama - wealthy family who has a butler at home.

K-ON! title=

The OP is adorable and full of life - particularly like this bit.

K-ON! title=

The "no no no!" bit is berry sweet too.

K-ON! title=

This is Mio Akiyama who plays bass and is already one of my fave anime characters so far. Here we see her application for another bukatsu which gets ripped up by Ritsu.

K-ON! title=

The artwork of the girls is just gorgeous.

K-ON! title=

Was watching K-ON! on the train and enjoyed it so much that I watched it again on the way home. Was supposed to change at Tameike Sanno from the Ginza line and was so captivated by the show that I looked out the window to realize that I overshot my stop by three stops. Dont you just hate it when that happens!

K-ON! title=

Is awaiting figures of Mio. I guess we will start to see figures of the K-ON girls at the next Wonder Festival.

K-ON! title=

This is Yui Hirasawa - the Dojikko Musume or "clumsy girl" who plays lead guitar.

K-ON! title=

Yui wants to join a bukatsu and doesn't really know what to do. She applies for the Keion-bu but changes her mind after. She goes to the room designated for the Keion-bu and tries to let the group know that she doesn't want to join.

K-ON! title=

Love how hair floats up when anime characters are happy.

K-ON! title=

Noses often disappear or turn into dots which is really cute.

K-ON! title=

This reminds me that I need to interview a university graduate who said she would wear her high school uniform to do an interview for me. She currently works for Appliya - the folks making the Evangelion apps. Shes incredibly talented and has not had the need to go round to companies for interviews - they all approach her instead! I think it could be something to do with her cute looks too.

K-ON! title=

This is the closest you are going to get to fanservice in K-ON! While I do like the occasional fanservice, I think it has its place. Will continue to watch Queens Blade and having it full of oppai is fine. But they would spoil K-ON! if they made that dark bit under Yui's skirt pantsu-visible in the DVD.

K-ON! title=

The background art is based on the Miyazaki Prefecture offices and you can see some photos of it at Yunakiti.

K-ON! title=

This is the ED which I absolutely adore - just brilliant. Want to borrow that guitar and to a Rock Trooper to this tune.

K-ON! title=

The story and animation is well above par in my mind but there seem to be quite a few folk out there who hate it - both inside and outside of Japan.

K-ON! title=

Yui looks gorgeous in the ED too.

K-ON! title=

Mio is the main singer in the ED and is too gorgeous for words.

K-ON! title=

And my fave shot of Mio out of the whole show.

K-ON! title=

Lets get a closer shot ^^;

K-ON! title=

Another sweet shot of Mio.

K-ON! title=

And a lookie at the two manga editions of K-ON illustrated by Kakifly! The paper strip that wraps around the cover of Japanese manga/books is called the "Obi" [] and is used for marketing blurb. Here you see the Obi promoting the anime. The Obi are cheap to produce and allows publishers to message stuff without spending a ton of money redesigning covers.

K-ON! title=

A few pages at the front of the manga are in color. This is the corridor scene where Ritsu approached Mio and tries to get her to join the Keion-bu.

K-ON! title=

Saw many comments on the Japanese otakusphere about how they dont like Tsumugi-chans thick eyebrows. I kinda like em.

K-ON! title=

And the rest in B/W. Tried to read some scans on my iPod Touch but it just didn't feel the same as reading it on paper.

K-ON! title=

The second edition sees Mio in a nurse outfit and the 5th band member.

K-ON! title=

A backlog of some of my manga reading.

K-ON! title=

Got this Korean edition of City Hunter when I was in Seoul last. Picked up most of my initial Japanese from reading manga - learning a language is so much more fun and effective when you are doing something you enjoy - and me loves reading manga. Everything works out much better when you are learning while doing something you enjoy *and* making a money at the same time - my job description at Mirai Inc ^^

K-ON! title=

Took me longer to learn how to read and write Hangul than it took to remember Katakana and Hiragana. You can remember shapes much more easily if you relate the shape to a daily item in life which has or contains the same sound.

K-ON! title=

The artwork and girls in Maken-ki is fab. Shame that Takeda-sensei's ero work is overly ero as you can see from the collection at Fakku - NSFW depending on whos behind you.

K-ON! title=

Makenki figures would be great too.

K-ON! title=

And a peek inside the latest Kemeko Deluxe. Still have not finished watching the anime.

K-on's a great series. I'm kind of partial because it looks like she's got the same guitar as I do, a gibson les paul cherry burst.

I really like the ending too, so much more than the opening. It's a promising start!

I don't understand everyone who's bashing the animation... it looks like typical amazing quality from KyoAni... Also the art style is not "lazy", it's just KyoAni's unique style. Better to have good quality in both TV and DVD than have crap on TV and medium on DVD. As you can tell I also got addicted to K-ON! and cannot wait till next week <3 Mio seems to be a popular choice. My preference is influenced by Kagamin <33

Really enjoyed K-ON! 1st ep and already looking forward to the second. Just adorable!

Our schools here have Bukatsu - we mostly call it ECAs (during my time) or extra curricular activities. They were supposed to provide a slight edge in terms of portfolios going on to higher levels/other schools - but really only if you were an elite athlete or something. Joined some like badminton, arts clubs, music clubs etc. Some were great, some not so. Strangely enough, had a great time with the music clubs - crazy about guitars.

I'm about to see the first EP and I'm very excited, will read again this article after watching it.
I particulary *love* music and bands type stories. Things like BECK are heaven, I don't mind if they are drama either (like NANA), just, can't resist music related manga (and when they got animated, gosh, it's paradise, cuz you can *hear* and see they performance animated).

I hope this will be a great hit, the characters are truly lovely.

Saw it, K-ON!, it was good, makes me think back at school where there are no clubs of the sought.
Its so "crap", Cheap, Teachers were bad, they WANTED the students money, etc. Guess poor public schools are doomed to closure which did almost happened to the one I've been to, (Who ever heard a headmaster beating up a disabled kid on the papers from the school you attended?!).

Anyways, The ending where she starts to sing and green notes start floating out was the kinda idea I thought I'd be doing for a video I was making up... though not from the mouth, note are green as well and... >_> World thinks alike...

I heard this anime was good and I'm about to watch it. If you're taking pictures of your monitor to get screenshots, there's a better method (kinda like print screen on PC). Open Preview, go to file and mouse-over grab near the bottom. From there you can choose to take screengrabs of a certain window, a section of your screen or a timed screenshot.

Anyways, keep up the good work Danny, and if you don't want some of your SAFS, I'll be glad to take them.

Like many others I got the impression it was ' Manabi Straight! ' in non-chibi characters as well. Almost the full season of Manabi Straight! they characters were like chibi form till they 'grew up' for the last 3 eps.

Anyway back to the subject, on K-ON! It was clear right away there wasn't the usual fail safe fan service of constant crotch shots and giant boobies (I cannot believe I just typed that). The girls are clearly very very flat chested and the shows performance is up to the voice actors and the graphics animators to keep the story interesting and flowing along.

Anime shows that have a tendency to get boring in the middle are ones you pause it and start surfing the web for 1 or 2 minutes then go back to watching. This did NOT happen during K-ON! For me, I love Animated characters to perform for me (not as in fan service actions silly). Watching them sing and dance has always added a charm to a show that makes the characters special if they can pull it off. I give the 1st EP a 3.5 out of 5. Lets hope it stays fortified with storyline.

Watched it the second time today since I was sleepy last night when I watched it the first time. And oooh colour pages for K-ON manga. We hardly see that when manga gets released here. And yeah Mio is really cute! My fave, but Yui's antics are too damn cute to ignore XD

I'm not too hyped about it though. I like it, but I don't go too ga-ga over it.

Already saw the first episode yesterday. So far it looks like it'll be a pretty good show. Didn't know what it was about at all when I decided to download it but it seems like it'll be a good series for this Spring. The animation wasn't spectacular in my opinion but it wasn't bad at all and I don't know why people would bash it. Characters seem really likable and all look very moe.

It is not in wide screen format because in Japan, the other places in Japan(other than Tokyo) are not up to date with the current technology and do not have wide screen so the anime is released cropped so they can watch it. I am adding this to my watch list.

Currently, I finally finished watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. (Debating if I should get that on DVD or just see if it will be put onto BD.) I am rewatching Solty Rei (this time from the beginning), and hoping to finish off Lucky Star.

That, and I want to see Tales of Phantasia: The Animation before the Tales of Vesperia movie is out. And I also want to see The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, as I seen parts of it and really liked what I had seen.

However, while I might see the new Fullmetal Alchemist series (It is not a new "season" and is dubbed "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" by FUNimation.), I might skip it if I can find a way to watch this series. Plus, I am debating about skipping a few specials and series.

But this one? I hope to see the first episode and see if I will see all 14 (or so) episodes. :3

While Yui is my favorite, I have to say though...for those that have seen all of episode one, at the end there when she's giggling to herself? That was a little creepy. If they make figures out of the K-On! cast, I would very much look forward to a figma. I hope they retain their proportions accurately when translated to plastic, I really like how shapely their legs are drawn at times yet slightly deformed they look at others.

There are many elements that got me hooked in K-On! The manga was the first initial step. Watching the anime pretty much impressed me even more. Its not a serious title with a deep rooted story but rather something to put a smile on my face. I'm also impressed with the accuracy of the instruments. I only showed my guitar friend the preview poster of K-On! and he identified it was a Gibson right away. He even went on to google up the real life pictures. One thing that does kind of throw me off is having Yui as the guitarist. Seems too moe for that part... I will probably change my mind on this later in the series. Definitely on my keeper list.

It's funny how similar the characters are to Lucky Star characters. Yui, as a clumsy girl, can be similar to Tsukasa, Ritsu => Konata, Mio => Kagami, and the keyboard person is similar to Miyuki as they're both the always cheerful types. Even the relationship between Ritsu and Mio reminds me of the relationship between Konata and Kagami.

Odds are I'm going to drop K-ON after a couple more episodes. I particularly didn't like the animation style. That and I can never look at Yui again without thinking of the name "Fetus hands" the /a/ gave her because of a scene where her hands were REALLY small compared to the rest of her. Then there's the fact in 8 weeks my free time will be destroyed when I enter the Air Force leaving me time to only follow a few anime a week, and I already chose the ones I will follow. Ending was great though.

Saw "K-ON!" last Friday and fell in love with it straight away! Wrote about the first episode on my blog as well, glad to see Danny and so many of you like it too.

Had also noticed a lot of others dislike it, mostly just because it's a heavily promoted and hyped series... also read some think it's just a mix of generic elements aimed to cater the otaku audience with a sure hit recipe. Honestly, I couldn't care less about such negative attitudes and comments.

From the very first scene on “K-ON!” delivered a bubbly, fluffy, slice-of-life story full of color, joy, laughter, light comedy and all the girls are sweet as honey, how could you not love them? Top that off with Kyoto Animation's signature style and splendid animation work and a solid soundtrack.

I love series like this, much as I love "Aria", because it overflows with life and radiates a positive atmosphere. It's all about enjoying yourself and living a happy life.

Like I already said in my blog and Danny often mentions, it's what people should do, throw away your negative thoughts and be more positive. They should let themselves be infected with this virus of joy that a series like "K-ON!" emanates.

It wasn't too bad for a first episode. It's got the Lucky Star vibes, considering it's got most of the crew from LS. Even the characters, for first impressions at least, are similar to LS in a way:

    Yui = Tsukasa - dojikko

Ritsu = Konata - outspoken and thinks outside the box

Mio = Kagami - straight talker and voice of reason, actually quite shy, not to mention she resembles Yomi-onee-chan. Not surprised she's the favourite girl of many people here.

Tsumugi = Miyuki - the elegant ojousan

BTW, WOW Danny! You get to interview someone cosplaying in a schoolgirl uniform? Just what kind of job are you offering anyway?

To be honest I didn't care for K-ON until you guys started to talk about it. Now I will consider watching it.

As for overshooting stations. Personally I have never tried it myself (well, trains can overshoot a platform, but that's different). However I know a guy who once fell asleep and woke up on the station after the one he was supposed to get off at. He didn't bother to hurry out (presumed he couldn't get to the door anyway) and stayed in the train. Funny thing was that the train moved the wrong way meaning that it had been at the end of the line and was now heading back and the next stop was the right one. Imagine if he had left the train and realised that when it started driving :P
It's also worth noticing that nobody woke him up at the end of the line.

Can't say I hate K-On, but I'm certainly ambivalent about it.
Upside #1: Mio. Especially her eyes. Her actual eyes, not the eupemistic ones.
Upside #2: The ED. It rocks. And it focuses almost entirely on Mio.
Downside #1: The rest of the cast seems uninteresting boring.
Downside #2: The non-plot seems unlikely to make up for boring cast memebers.

I'm giving it a few more eps to see how it develops... I suspect it'll be one of those shows I end up watching because I like one character.

This show delivered in every way i hoped and more. It gives me the same happy feeling I get while watching Lucky Star. The characters are adorable. There isn't a bunch of tasteless fanservice. It's based around music, which is my biggest passion, and did I menmtion the characters are adorable!!!

After watching Queens Blade and cringing for 20 minutes, this was a nice change of pace. It was the character design in QB that turned me off. I imagine it is based right off of the original material which is good for fans, but I'm turned off by female characters who have manly bodies and giant breasts. Anyway.... K-ON is looking fantastic and I I'm eagerly anticipating the next episodes.

K-ON! from EP 1, although has not surpassed Haruhi, I have a feeling it will surpass Lucky Star in the long run. EP1 was outstanding, have a really good feeling about this one. And the OP is addictive haha

Need to pick up some Maken-Ki Tankouban :O Great manga, but the translations on onemanga are a bit dodgy and the scan quality is a bit naff sometimes >.<

K-on is pretty fun to watch ^^. Mio is my third favorite for the moment. I still don't understand why Mio is everyones favorite, she did not do much in the 1st episode. Guess her appeal is how well her long black hair is drawn and her face ^^. My favorites are Yui(wow when she said GOMENASAI, HIKEMASEN and bowed, omg I loved her!) and Ritsu(She's just too funny ^^, hopefully we will more Mio fanservice so I can change my opinion). Kyo ani did another great job with this series ! Music, animation and everything thing else was done good! I'm just a bit deceived that these kind of opening and ending are becoming the standards of new generation anime, it becomes too repetitive :(.

I think I'm going to wait for a few episodes to come out--then I can archive binge if I like it. ^^; I always like to give a series three episodes or so before judging it (largely thanks to the sudden change towards awesomeness in Nanoha). Ahh, that's cool that you're reading City Hunter in Korean. XD I'm reading the Spanish edition to brush up on my Spanish (and because the US edition never finished, booo). It's fun, but I'm still a really slow reader. There's so much Spanish manga... almost tempted to start reading a second series in Spanish.

K-ON looks really cute, I'll have to check it out sometime.

I ended up watching dubbed Genshiken instead, but after watching Genshiken again I was able to interpret the K-ON! anime properly. It looks fun and follows many respected plot tropes. Haven't seen the series yet, but I'll keep an eye out for it.

I watched the series... It was good.. I feel hung up seeing that the series was quite short... (crossed fingers) I hope there's season 2...
