A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Looks like I need to start blogging about cars if I'm to receive a Nissan GTR - SACS (Suddenly Acquired CarS) soon?!

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

In a previous poll, most of you said that you preferred having a A Week in Tokyo series than a A Day in Tokyo but there is so much going on in life that I need to start doing the A Day in Tokyo more often - so basically you are going to get both ^^

For me, a blog is not just about writing stuff which brings in the punters and generating page views - the important thing is for me to write about what I'm passionate about and interests me. I also want my photo articles to be a log of my life so that I can look back and see what I was doing a year ago for example. My wish is that the content that I write continues to be of use to folks inside and outside of Japan who share my interests - the formula has been working great so far ^^

I am aware that there are users who just like the Japan stuff and users who prefer the figure stuff so consciously make an effort not to have too many of the same genre posted in a row - which is a pattern you may have noticed that I've been keeping for the past year or so. I beleive that this balance has contributed to the growth of the site.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

So, we are starting off at 4PM in Ginza - the snazzy district with a load of brand name shops and department stores like Matsuzakaya and Mitsukoshi. On Sundays, the road is closed off to traffic and pedestrianized in whats known as Hokousha Tengoku [歩行者天国] - Akihabara used to be pedestrianized on a Sunday but alas is no more since the Akihabara stabbing massacre.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

I really like Ginza. There is something in the atmosphere - a positive energy that I find difficult to describe. Will be able to muster the words after spending more time there.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Was in Ginza today to have a meeting with some folks at Apple at the Apple store. The main offices are Nishi Shinjuku and they also got some offices above the Ginza store too.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

I was contacted by somebody at Apple who came across dannychoo.com from a Google search and has been a reader for a few weeks now. Through learning more about me through my profile page and photo articles, they came to the conclusion that there could be some way for us both to work with each other - their conclusion was correct ^^
Expect to see exciting stuff from Apple x dannychoo.com in the near future.

When I presented at Animax in Singapore last November, I talked about how important it is to have a profile page which lists your abilities and experience - without the existence of such a page, folks would have to guess - folks are not going to guess unless you tell them.
Without that profile page, I would not have got into Amazon either.

If you have a blog/site and want to make something of your career, I urge you to create an online profile which lists your experiences, hobbies, skills and achievements. This will help folks understand you and your goals and will also enable folks with similar interests to relate to you.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

After the meeting at Apple, stopped off at the Volks Tenshi no Sumika Dollfie store just opposite Apple.

Was looking for the saddle stand which they didn't have. Wanted a pair of glasses for Aoi but they didn't have any decent ones. Forgot to pick up a new wig for Aoi-chan.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Then came across the Nissan showroom at the Ginza crossing - went into take pics of the gorgeous Nissan GTR.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

The GTR in action below.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Up until now I've been offered to take quite a few cars like the GTR for a spin by comrades at NihonCar but didn't proactively take up their offers as I haven't really been that interested in the automobile scene. Seeing the GTR today however has ignited an interest in these mean machines. Would you like to see more reviews of cars?

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Interior. Wonder what its like to sit inside.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Rear. Nice shape. Color matches well with armor.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Drivers seat. Asked if I could hop in and the nice showroom lady said yes. Meow!

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

A single red button for ignition. The CEO of Amazon Jeff Bezos always told us how he wanted to have a big red button to push which would launch stores - meaning that stores should be built in a way that configurations are all done automatically with very little input from humans.

I left Amazon with the same mentality which is why we built Mirai Gaia in a way that instances can be launched literally with a big red button.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

The cockpit. Load of buttons and knobs to play about with.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

The very good looking dials.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

A GTR is not complete without Kagami.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

More buttons and rocker switches on the steering wheel.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

The design around this area however is a bit naff.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Touch screen panel. Carwings?!

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Gear stick. I took my driving lessons back in the UK with a manual stick. After driving automatic machines, I don't think I could go back to manual. I find that I can concentrate more on the road when driving an automatic machine. What is you being preferring?

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

A new Nissan GTR costs between 8,610,000 yen and 15,750,000 yen depending on what sort of knobs you want on it.
Secondhand GTR's don't seem to cost much different either.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Still like the Fairlady Z though which will be our next car - in action below. Will be getting a dannychoo.com orange one ^^;

A new Fairlady Z costs between 3,450,000 yen and 4,250,000 yen. Secondhand about 1,800,000 yen.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Forgot to request a look under the bonnet.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Then have a quick stroll before heading back to base.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Akihabara is generally for otaku seeking a new 2D wife for the week.
Shibuya is generally for young girls seeking apparel.
Ginza is generally for folks who have that extra bit O cash to spend on brand names and expensive delicacies.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Just noticed how odd the head looks in the bottom left corner of the photo ^^;

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

The main crossing in Ginza.
Before I forget, I was required to flag all my photos in Flickr as restricted - will talk about why in depth in a separate post. Do let me know if you are seeing errors or wot not at dannychoo.com regarding these photos.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Picking up some cake for the both of us.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Everything looked so good! Ended up spending quite a bit ^^;

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Posters at Ginza station.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

I love these guides - I can see which carriage I need to get on at this station so that I can get off right in front of an escalator at my destination station.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Looking for the second edition of K-on at my local book store. Will talk about K-on in depth soon - one of the best anime series I've seen in a long time.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

You can just make out the ecchi mags (Dengeki Hime, BugBug etc) to the left of the photo - they are usually bound so that you cant read em in the store. Some game mags are bound too. Most of the other stuff are not strung up and free to read.

I've been to a few Kinokuniya outside Japan were *all* the mags are shrink wrapped!

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Then its time for dindins at our fave sushi place.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Mmmm. I'll start with this.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Always prefer to take a table at a sushi place as I find it a pain to yell out at the sushi master every time I want a new plate. Folks sitting at a table fill in a form and get handed the sushi all in one go a few mins later.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

After dindins its off to look for some stuff that I need to buy. Evengelion gets yet another new pachinko machine.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Lost my previous pocket tape measure - picked up a new one for about 500 yen.

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

Picked up some wood which I will use to display my Mirai-chan dakimakura on the wall without her sagging - cant have a 17 year old girl sagging now can we?

A Day in Tokyo 3 title=

The messy table a few hours ago.

^^/ Yay more photos of Tokyo. Anyways a car review here or there wouldn't be half bad. I wish book stores here in my neck of the woods had that kind of manga selection T^T All of those breads looked really good especially the ones in the second photo. Uh so wait the new Haruhi anime is going to start airing April 2nd?

Nissan Zs are indeed low the ground and can be difficult to get into and out of if you are tall (6ft 2in for me), but there is usually a lot of leg room for the driver and passenger seats.

Just a shame that more often then not, a good automatic will destroy even the best of manuals in terms of speed reliability etc - as is the case in this GT-R.

I mean I like manual too, but I wouldn't trust it in a race.

you definitely want to use a manual in a race (no respectable driver uses automatics on a race), as it is more controllable to driver on how he/she wants to drive the vehicle, compared to the automatic tranny where the gearbox decides. it is also faster, depending on the driver, a manual tranny can save a few milliseconds switching gears than a automatic. this may seem an insignificant on normal driving, but on a race that could be decided in 1/1000s of a second, any shave in time you could get counts.

Occasional car reviews would be great as Japan have a lot of interesting local cars we never see overseas. And the awesome GTR of course.

Re your question on manual or auto, I like auto too. I also learnt manual, but my current car is an auto Legacy with Tiptronic so has the best of both worlds. Also, ever since I learnt left foot braking, I think I'm much safer and quicker to respond now than if I was driving a manual.

I think I would go to Ginza for the food and a look at the cars, but the expensive clothes can stay there thank you.

Great pictures, I definitely would love to see more car reviews here! The GT-R looks amazing, the interior is so welcoming that it makes me want to live inside the car.^^ Compared to the Fairlady, I find the GT-R to be much better looking on the outside, the Fairlady reminds me of the Porsche 911 for some reason (which I don't really like^^), so given the choice I would go for the GT-R (but my dream car is still the Nissan Skyline GT-R^^).
As for shifting, I prefer manual cars over automatics, I find manual shifting adds more enjoyment to driving experience, although I admit it requires more attention from the driver.
And the cakes from the bakery looks delicious, some of them reminds me of the cakes Sanae used to make in Clannad.^^

I'm not sure if I'd want to read about cars that much. I think it'd depend on how you did it; if future posts about cars are going to be like this one and more, "This car is pretty", I'd like that more than, say, "This car has a x liter engine and so many horsepower and blah technical details blah."

Yeah, but possession of such goods are illegal (in some countries) if the person depicted is under 18.

        For example:

UK is passing a law that will ban a very large amount of Erotic Graphic Novels, including any that depict what could be seen as a teenager in sexual situations.

In the US, a man with a large collection of Doujin has been arrested for Child Pornography.

And from last time I checked, Human-Rights groups in Japan are trying to ban schoolgirl erotica and all Doujins with girls that look under 18.

I don't say I agree with it, I just don't want Danny to get into trouble ^^I

Kagami isn't sushi that was Seto-san! Err I guess Seto-san got ate already. About the cars transmissions. For Hotrods, Muscle cars, and work trucks it has to be a standard 4 speed. For people now with busted up backs hips and shoulders we gotta have automatics like it or not.

I was commenting on a show the other day I saw where the 'little girl' getting her license in a standard transmission car was too easy. You know we have hills on some roads that you can't see the front of the road over the hood and you have to stop at a stoplight for up to 4 minutes sometimes. Do you know how hard it is to hold a old Mustang (1969) in one spot on a huge incline with cars behind you right on the bumper and in front of you? Brakes on cars work just fine on simple flat dry roads but when its raining and you are on that hill having the foot on 3 peddles at once is an amazing trick that eventually wears the legs out. Back and forth back and forth waiting for the light to change, back and forth 3 inches over and over. . .

Anyway for the grocery getter a automatic and use lease cars these days to avoid the false transmission repairs caused by crooked little flyby night car maintenance places.

That GTR looks very nice! Would love the to take one for a spin to feel what it's like. The white color version indeed screams perfect itasha candidate...

Though it's shocking to see how many controls, knobs and other buttons they crammed onto the steering wheel and driver's side. Looks like you need a few hours reading the manual to know what each control is for. While it may be a great and fun sports car, with all those controls and electronics, where 's the real old-fashioned driving sensation gone to?

Love the comfort and security of modern day cars but nothing ever beat the sheer driving ecstacy of a good classic car like the '73 VW Beetle I had, now that was heavenly cruising.

I'd stay away from secondhand GTRs, especially the early models. They had some severe problems with the transmission and launch control feature.

I'd rather see photos of cars and car shows than actual reviews.

The worse thing is they don't take responsible for broken transmission due to the use of launch control.

I'm not very crazy about the cars and apple posts; mainly because I come to this blog for the anime stuff and the general Japan culture bits. I guess cars are a big part of Japan too so I can't complain a lot on that one.

I hope there are future options to rule out both cars and apple posts for the personal settings eevn though I usually like to see everything.

Hmmm, there are so many sites dedicated to cars and myself have lost interest in the import scene myself. The GTR is pretty nice, the best bang-for-your-buck when you're talking about performance cars. It's too bad that you have to pay a premium well over sticker just to get one since dealers can charge all they want for one.
And Danny, I don't think you have to worry about manual transmission, the GTR is a clutchless automated manual. Which is really what the future will be, no more hassle of clutch manuals.

yes please Danny! more reviews on cars PLEASE!! especially shows, cuz sometimes you have a few cars with anime theme paint jobs so it would suit some of the readers if not so interested in these beautiful machines.
i'v only experienced the R-33, like the looks of the R-34 more then the new model. it is a well build machine, as most J-cars are ^^. to bad i can't have the older models since they are grey imports and the only way to get one in Europe is go to the UK. they have tons of em there but problems come with registration of the car in your home country since its drivers side is on the right only; would have to drive to the UK each year to renew the plates :( but right now saving for a Evo IX MR-2, only 5.000 Euros to go xP

I definitely think you could add something a bit different in your car reviews over other automotive sites so I think it might be a fun and interesting read.

As for the GTR after finally seeing one in person myself not to long ago I have to admit that it's a HUGE car compared to what it looks like in pictures. Makes the new 370Z look tiny in comparison when they are both shown together. You wouldn't want a second hand GTR or a first gen one anyways as they still have to many issues regarding the transmission and launch control and in Japan with the restrictions that Nissan built into the car it's kinda lame with the whole sorry can't have any fun in the car unless you take it to a certified track and then straight to a dealer for a very expensive service job hahaha poor sucker. I think the second gen ones will be a bit better but I think Nissan will still limit the car in Japan. It's not limited here in the States but I've heard of people getting their warranties voided right left and upside down not to mention the ungodly mark up on the car even with the crap economy dealers are still marking them up at 50% of the MSRP on the car. Which to me ultimately means an unreasonable and not interesting car and for the price I'd still rather buy a Porsche 911.

Last but not least it's kinda funny but really lame that your pictures got restricted someone didn't like the scantily clad figures I guess. What a joke. I'd protest the restrictions myself but don't know how futile that will be.

I drive stick. When we're talkin about utilizing the car to its potential, its the only way to drive.

I never really understood why people luved early model GT-Rs so much. Sure it was capable of being modded to racing spec with tremendous HP, but rarely have I seen someone really know how to effectively use all that raw power. It was a beast enclosed inside an plain square box.

This new GT-R looks beautiful, but looks quite heavy so I wonder how it feels to drive. Maybe someday I'll see for myself, but in the meantime I have other automotive favorites way before I favor this baby.

I definitely like that car with a modern mean look though the amount of toggles and buttons could be considered a driving distraction and a good reason for automakers to delve into voice command accessories.

The sushi looks seriously yummy and fresh as compared to what you find prepackaged at most grocers here in the states. The best I had was from a business in Ann Arbor Michigan called New York Deli where they made it fresh right there.

Its not, without getting into the technicalities, basically you can set the car choose between auto or manual; in manual you use the paddle shifts. If you look at the steering wheel pictures, you'll see paddles on the direectly behind the steering wheel with the "-" and "+"

And the best trial times were done in manual mode.

        Oh, I'm well aware of the GT-R dual-clutch automated manual gearbox. Paddle-shift isn't manual. It's a manu-matic(?).

I care not for the track times, I care more for the driving experience. Driving a standard transmission entails moving the shifter through the H-pattern, footwork with the clutch, foot+shifter-hand coordination, etc. Essentially, with enough skill, the car becomes an extension of your body. The car will only do what you will want it to do. You shift badly, the car will tell you. You shift perfectly, the car will provide feedback.

One hasn't really driven an automobile until one has driven with a standard transmission. So you can see I just don't like automatics in any form, far too easy to drive, a non-engrossing experience overall, and turns driving into a daily convenience.

GT-R's a great car, but I think Nissan dropped the ball in not offering a standard transmission as an available option for those who prefer a manual.

Car reviews? Not too keen on the subject especially these sporty cars because I see car as a tool. But yes, I would like to see more car and perhaps even more tech related articles because I like Danny's style. Easy but nonetheless interesting aproach and yummy pictures.

I like manual transmission. I just can't seem to trust automatic especially in winter and with a trailer. I wan't to decide when I change. Altough I would like to lose the hand throttle because it's a hassle in traffic lights and crossing to adjust throttle, gears and pedals. Luckily it must only be done with a cold engine but it still makes going to work a bit more than annoying.

Just imagine getting stuck in a traffic jam in a manual car. Not sure if they have traffic jams a lot in Japan though.

Being in the JDM scene I would just LOVE to see car reviews from you danny. Cars to me aren't just a tool for everyday use, its more like a person, a partner. Your car lives and breathes, it reacts to the way you treat it. Its part of your intrests and your personality. Every car you choose is almost like a path. It affects the people you meet, the way you drive, your mood. If you love your car and treat it as if it was your own, it will flourish and treat you right. If you abuse it and neglect it, it will be all run down, blow a headgasket, or kill itself. The GTR is like an art form to me. The VR38DTT surely is a masterpiece and the new fairlady is also very nice whilist using the same engine as the G37S. I think it would suit you well Danny ^_^

GTR WANT! I absolutely adore that car, although it doesn't quite get the same response when asked "what do you drive?" Somehow, "A Nissan" doesn't quite sound as impressive as "an Aston Martin" or "a Porsche."

But still, a pretty slick machine. Not only did it beat a GT4 around the 'Ring, but it also beat a bullet train across Japan. :D

Cool stuff Danny. Man, you got to sit inside the GT-R? When the GT-R made it's appearance in my town, it' was on a turn table with a chained barrier to prevent people even touching it's exterior.

The photos of Ginza were pretty interesting too. I'll be visiting Japan in about 6 months (for the Tokyo Game Show), and hopefully I'll be able to take some interesting photos while I'm in Tokyo.

Gorgeous indeed, though I happen to prefer cars with a bit of history in them. What's happening over there with regards to electric cars and what-not? In NZ there is a lot of talk going on about them these days. Personally I wouldn't like to find myself stuck in the middle on nowhere looking for a extension cord.

But hey, if you get offered a nice car at least have a little fun.

CARWINGS is a system where it updates you of traffic information and other stuff, so your GPS map updates and you get congestion free GPS routes.

And Danny, about your dannychoo orange, I know of a tuning company who uses orange as their somewhat racing colour, and yes, they have painted a GT-R and a Z34 Fairlady. Check it out http://zeleperformance.com

It would be cool if you got some stuff about cars here, since it's a portal to Japan, the reason I like Japan is cause of their cars.

The LX3 is a high-end compact point-n-shoot camera, costing as much as a entry-level DSLR. It's a compact made for photographers, with features that photographers would care about.
