Mac Life 4 title=

Its been about 9 months since the Mac Life 3 article and I've been stocking up on Mac bits n pieces for today.
The first photo is the latest office layout - taken after Tokyo CGM Night Episode 3 in Harajuku.

Mac Life 4 title=

Might as well start off with the latest piece of hardware - the new iMacs that just came out. They are a whole lot cheaper now too - the 20" 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo cost 138,880 yen with a memory upgrade to 4GB.

Mac Life 4 title=

And here are the bits n pieces that came with it.

Mac Life 4 title=

The new slimline keyboard without the number pad compared to the wireless ones.

Mac Life 4 title=

Simple and elegant design. 4 USB sockets, Audio in/out Firewire 800, LAN and Mini DisplayPort.

Mac Life 4 title=

View from the back.

Mac Life 4 title=

The DVD slot. Wonder if it would have been a good idea to have the slot on top as the way its designed now, folks cant have it in a corner with a wall on the right.

Mac Life 4 title=

The addition of the new iMac means a new figure layout too. Here I try placing the Dollfie daughters on the window sill.

Mac Life 4 title=

The first attempt. Something didn't seem quite right. The iMac in the right corner seemed to take up a load of space. Or it could be because of the bad Feng Shui karma? Personally don't follow the Feng Shui rules and place things in areas which look right. Anybody practice Feng Shui here?

Mac Life 4 title=

In the middle of thinking about another layout...

Mac Life 4 title=

This layout seems to work for now. The iMac on the left of the desk seems to be more in place - perhaps because there's no wall beside it.

Mac Life 4 title=

And after polishing and dusting up the office now looks like this.

Mac Life 4 title=

Thanks to your feedback, I now use Teleport to control other machines with the same keyboard and mouse. The software needs to be installed on the machine that you want to control.

Here you can see the different screens on my table. the iMac screen shows up and I can drag it anywhere I want. When I move the mouse to the edge of my screen, it automatically passes over to control the iMac - brilliant!
Not only that, I can drag and drop files between the Macs too *and* the clipboard automatically is copied over - completely seamless!

What I don't think is possible however is to control the iMac when I hook it up to the external optic fiber connection - its currently on the private optic connection.

Mac Life 4 title=

Didnt go for the top of the range model as the iMac will be a HTTP server - its spec is about the same as the dannychoo.com server but the iMac has double the memory. If a server is to be just serving up files, the most important thing is memory which MYSQL and Apache love. Speed is important too but would be more important for an application that requires intensive computations. Resizing images in ImageMagick eat up a load of CPU for example.
For those who don't know, ImageMagick is like a Photoshop thats controlled via text based commands only ^^;

Mac Life 4 title=

Once the iMac is set up as a HTTP server, I probably wont use it much apart from monitoring the services and network connections. May use it to display some moesome slideshow though ^^;

And for those who are wondering - the flip clock on the iPod Touch is available here.

Mac Life 4 title=

A few of you asked why I always have the default Leopard wallpaper showing - the main reason is that its the only color that looks decent when I take pics - all other wallpaper looks blue and I cant be bothered to set the white balance all the time. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong with the camera though.

Mac Life 4 title=

Also went and got a few new lights from Ikea which I fitted under the desk. Wonder how many years it will be until everything is wireless including electricity? At the moment, electricity can pass through the air but at very short ranges (millimeters). Me not an expert on the subject though ^^;

Mac Life 4 title=

A few from the other side.

Mac Life 4 title=

Had to retire a few figures to other parts of the house.

Mac Life 4 title=

Some other not strictly Mac related stuff to look at.
FON is a service which provides free wifi in many places all over the world to folks who have one of these FON routers plugged in at home.

Mac Life 4 title=

The idea is that you share your internet connection securely with others and in return, you get to use other FON users connections too - no matter where they are in the world. More info at Wikipedia.

Mac Life 4 title=

The back of the router - one socket plugs into my current modem at home and I'm then able to share my internet connection with folks walking nearby. If you really wanted to, there is also an option to charge people to use your wifi connection too.

This router is called a "la Fonera" and I got it at Amazon for 3,420 yen - I can now use FON wifi connections all over the world for free forever.

Mac Life 4 title=

However, the FON is an incredible pain to set up requiring the loss of 1.5 million brain cells and 2 pints of blood. The customer support is about as useful as a slap in the face with a decomposed baboon. I finally got it to work by trying out a ton of different settings and going through Google for hours - only to find many others in the same boat. Still cant figure out why it decided to work though.

Mac Life 4 title=

Diagram on the box. The blue cloud represents the Internets.

Mac Life 4 title=

There is a HTTP interface inside the FON accessible by a local 192.168 IP. There you can configure a public and private connection. I gave my public connection the name of "FON_VIRUS" - anybody walking by my house can see this and log into the FON wifi. If they are also a FON user, they can use the connection for free. If they are not then they need to pay for wifi time.

By default, people would pay FON for wifi time but I can configure it so that I get money too. I didn't bother with this.

The other connection called "____" is a connection that I can use at home but computers on the network wont show up on it.
My private wifi is "wireless_virus" ^^;

Mac Life 4 title=

Once I choose to connect to the FON wifi and launch the browser, I can login to use FON for free.
As soon as I got the router and configured everything, I went around my local neighborhood to see if there were any other FON users in the area. Sure enough, after a few blocks, I came across another FON users wifi which I was able to log into using my username/password.

I also tried doing the same with my FON router turned off but FON knows when you are cheating ^^;

Mac Life 4 title=

The thing about FON however is that most people who use these are individuals who live in residential areas - meaning that its difficult to find any FON wifi connections in busy urban areas.

Using the FON maps, you can see where fonspots are around the world. I got the FON just before I made a trip to Singapore - left the modem on at home but didn't find any fonspots in SG.

The verdict? Nice idea but fails in practice - probably works well for folks who just happen to live and work in an area covered by FON users.

Mac Life 4 title=

The next item to take a look at is the mStand by Rain Design - made from a solid piece of aluminum and looks smexy with the MacBook Pro.

Mac Life 4 title=

Hole at the back of the stand for wires and dolphins.

Mac Life 4 title=

Folks in Japan can get this at Amazon for 6,494 yen.

Mac Life 4 title=

While I love using Macs, they do seem to run into a spot of bother from time to time. I'm beginning to think that Apple have their own version of the Sony Timer.

Previously had problems with my MacBook Pro - they fixed it under warranty but its playing up again - does not hibernate at all. The screen on my PowerBook is a bit dodgy too with flickering.

Decided to get some Apple Care for the MacBook Air which cost about 30,000 yen for a two year warranty extension. I got it just before the warranty expired and had no idea I needed to register my copy of the Apple Care. Now I'm going through a process where I have to take pictures of my receipts and send them to Apple to prove that I purchased Apple Care before the warranty on the MBA expired. If you are getting Apple Care - register it straight away!
I got some Apple care for the iMac too and will do so for all hardware I get from now - ends up being cheaper in the long run over paying an arm and a toe for repairs.
Aoi-chan is such a cutie.

Mac Life 4 title=

Got a secondhand Mac Mini a few weeks before the new Mac Mini came out - the dangers of choosing Apple as they bring out stuff when you least expect.

A new Mac Mini at the time with memory upgrades would have cost me about 120,000 yen but I got it secondhand for about 70,000 yen - which is what the new Mac Minis cost!

Mac Life 4 title=

Hooking up a monitor to test out the hardware. Windows users can easily test out Macs because you can use all your existing peripherals - this is exactly what I done back in 2005. I was going to use the Mini as a media server if I decided I didn't like the Mac OS. I ended up loving it and have not looked back since.

Mac Life 4 title=

The fantastic thing about Macs is that you can make a clone of any Mac and then restore it to any other Mac. For example, I can clone my MacBook Pro and boot up a Mac Mini with the same image - no driver complaints at all.

Here I'm about to restore an clone to the new Mac Mini.

Mac Life 4 title=

I boot up the Mac Mini while holding down the Apple key (or Alt key on a Windows keyboard) and then choose to boot from a copy of leopard that I extracted to an external drive. Once thats done, I choose to restore from Time Machine from the menu.

Mac Life 4 title=

I attach a drive that contains Time Machine backups and restore to the Mac Mini - about an hour later and I have a clone of the original Mac Mini. This process makes it easy for me to deploy servers.

One thing that wont work is Apache and thats because Time Machine doesn't copy the log folder. You need to run the following from the terminal before you can start up Apache.

cd /private/var/log
sudo mkdir apache2

Mac Life 4 title=

Time Machines are great to keep a backup of what you are doing without interrupting your workflow but sometimes you need a perfect copy of a drive - use Disk Utility to clone a drive perfectly. You need to drop out of the OS and boot from the Leopard DVD first though. Tried Super Duper but the image does not restore properly.
Carbon Copy Cloner used to work well in the past but stopped working for me.

Mac Life 4 title=

And as luck would have it, as soon as the new Mac Mini came along, the first ever one that I got back in 2005 died - was only the 40GB default drive though. Time to open it up and replace it. Got these paint scrapers from the 100 yen store. in Japanese these are called "Hera" [へら]。

Mac Life 4 title=

Stick in the paint scrapers into the Mac Mini like this and just push inwards - the bottom should just pop off. A video below goes into detail of how to open a Mac Mini.

Mac Life 4 title=

Mini opened. 4 years of dust.

Mac Life 4 title=

DVD drive removed. IDE drive in sight.

Mac Life 4 title=

Need a torque screwdriver to remove some of the screws.

Mac Life 4 title=

Small speaker at the front.

Mac Life 4 title=

Need to remove the black plastic bit in order to remove the drive properly. Dont know about the new Mac Mini though.

Mac Life 4 title=

New drive in place. if you are upgrading memory or replacing the drive then you may as well vacuum up the dust too.

Mac Life 4 title=

The secondhand Mac Mini has been serving up your avatars, news items and avatars - which is why your avatar may take up to 20 mins to update. Just after I got that secondhand mini, I acquired yet another one - Intel with 2GBs worth of memory. T'was my first ever free Mac ^^;

Mac Life 4 title=

The Mac version of the Blue Screen Of Death. Happens a couple of times a month. Mac users - how often does your Mac go bonkers?

Mac Life 4 title=

And for a while I was trying out a Power Mac G5.

Mac Life 4 title=

Gorgeous machine. Came with 4GBs (I think) of memory. Picked it up secondhand from a mate. Was going to use as a HTTP server but it regularly hung - maybe thats why my mate was selling it ^^;

lately I haven't been bothered about whether hardware is new or used. If the price different is considerable then I may go for secondhand. The folks over here really look after their stuff well and it usually looks brand new - all boxed with instructions.
Do you prefer new or used or are not bothered? Beware when buying used figures though...

Mac Life 4 title=

Could have kept it as an expensive stool though.

Mac Life 4 title=

The inside is gorgeous too. Fans can be pulled out without screws and there are hardly any wires inside - unlike my previous desktop machines which had a jungle O wires to play with.

Mac Life 4 title=

The SATA drives just slot in.

Mac Life 4 title=

This is where the G5 was for a while until I took it back for a refund. Very loud!

Mac Life 4 title=

I converted my wife to Mac too. While she hated it at the beginning, she slowly got used to it over time and now loves it.
The MacBook in this pic belongs to my neighbor who I convinced to buy a Mac too. Them owning Macs means less maintenance time for me as they would usually ask me if they have any computing problems.

While Macs do have their quirks and while Windows Explorer *still* kicks seven shades of poo out of the Mac Finder (the folder/file management program), I feel that macs enable me to do perform tasks quicker due to things like Expose. With Expose, you can configure each corner of the screen to either show you all application windows or view desktop or more. The Vista version flips through applications but if you have 20 different apps running then you have may have to flip through them 19 times before you get to your app - Not used it for a while now so it could be different. Some Expose action below.

Through your comments and my twitter followers, I notice a rather high percentage of mac users and wondering how many of you are out there or who are thinking of switching to Mac.

Working at Amazon and Microsoft title=

Been meaning to post this for a while now - a summary of my working career at Amazon as Website manager and Microsoft as CGM Product Manager. This article is a follow on (with a bit o overlap) of the Tokyo 1999 - 2001 article.

The first photo is taken from the canteen at the Pacific Medical Center (PacMed) - the HQ of Amazon.com. Continue reading...

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

I run both Macs and PCs. Not really a technical user since I do mostly graphic design on my machine. I just like things to run fast, so an easy to use GUI that is simple to understand is the only real requirement I have. My PC is more or less one big hardrive.

You and I are one in the same. I've got both mac and PC as well. I mostly use my macbook for internet and other quick things, or to "sketchbook" when I am in the living room. Definitely an excellent media box too.

PC is my workhorse, I guess. Probably because it's a desktop. If the hardware were reversed, the roles would probably be reversed too.

I use PC at home and Mac at work... although the Mac at work is Mac OS 8.9 to 9.6 for some of the computers. We're still using first gen iMacs and some G3s. Heck the Mac I use for my main job is a PowerMac 2000. We're moving to another section in the office building so hopefully we'll get upgrades too. I'd love to use that new iMac.

Funny how you call the article "Mac Life 4" when you have 4 Macs on your desk XD

I use PCs at home and Macs at school for work. I've become quite comfortable with using Macs and think they've got some really great features, but I'm not willing to take the plunge and convert my home work environment to Macs just yet. Perhaps once Macs become as affordable as PCs (or I get a sudden infusion of cash) I'll think about it some more.

As much as i love to switch to MAC. At the moment i really can't given the hard nature of MACs in the Philippines aka Clovisland since you could say that there is like a handful of users of it here plus getting it serviced like warranty and stuff are pretty big of a hassle here.
Plus the price itself is too much here compared to when you buy them online or outside the country.

But entirely i love mac and will definitely change next year or mid this year.

lol getting service warranty for any type computer (not just Macs) is a great big hassle in Clovisland, I tried having my Toshiba laptop repaired locally once, the local distributor would not accept the full service "Global" warranty. I ended up having it fixed in Hong Kong.

I use both Mac and PC. Switched to Mac after I finished my uni studies and was working freelance at the time. Still use PC at work nowadays as well as the occasion download.

The new launched Mac range were actually more expensive here in Australia. I think they said because our dollar isn't as strong as it used to be against the USD.

Had the worst experience with technology when I first got my MBP. It kernel paniced (the screen you showed) every 5 minutes or more! Drove me insane. Never really got an explanation as to what caused it but the tech guy reckons it was the incorrect installation of the extra memory I requested from the store. Got a replacement MBP after 48 hours.

My waifu so far can't be converted to the Mac since she thinks it's too complicated (her words, not mine). Will use more Jedi mind powers to convince her otherwise in the future.

I used to use Macs when I was schooling, it's expensive tho, everytime my machine died and if I wanted to replace it with a mac I drain all my savings ^^; Sucks big time for a student :P eventually I switched to PC but needed to harass my programmer friends to help me install em lol! Currently I use a PC, but either way they're just tools to me, I can just adapt whether or not I am given a Mac or PC ;)

Nice article Danny. The new iMac looks very interesting, tempting me even more to switch which I may do so next time I need new hardware or need to upgrade. ^^

Is such a keyboard without keypad really handy? I actually use the keypad a lot.

On my Akari-chan I'm currently using Mandriva 2009 Linux (Gnome version) with Compiz enabled, Compiz has a similar function as Expose, very handy, adore and use it often. And it's indeed more efficient than Windows Flip3D which is just a fancier way to alt-tab in Windows.

I'm wondering if my Akari-chan's Psile case would fit a MacMini's internals... are the heatsinks on the MacMini's CPU and chipset removable to allow another cooling to be installed? Because I'd like to transfer over my watercooling blocks. (Have a silent, passive watercooling solution.)

i use both mac and pc. before i was a hardcore PC buffd, then when i got my intel core 2 duo with a dp35dp i decided to try a hackintosh because i heard you need a intel processor and an intel chipset. i've been using OSX on my main system ever since. the expose works really well and the dashboard is good as well. i have a razer diamondback 3g so with a push of a mouse button i have expose and dashboard which make it much easier to navigate when i'm short 1 hand.

in the end i dont know if i'll ever buy a mac because the hardware never really is worth the money. but the software i'll always have a up to date version and pumped on my system.

Oh so it's called "Expose" in MacOS. In Gnome/Linux there's "compiz" that does the same thing but with more options. I've used both without really thinking about it. Especially since my favorite is ALT+TAB and even windows has that(winflip). ALT+TAB is one of those nice cross platform shortcuts.

Really Danny, I think you would like Linux if you gave it a shot. I think MacOS is even Unix based now. You'll need a PC though I think...

Kernel panics a couple of times a month!? I would right away your machine is faulty (RAM, video chip or whatever) except that you have so many of them and so I assume you mean it is not always the same machine. But my experience has been the same in an all Mac office of ~30 computers of several generations and architectures (all running 10.4 or 10.5, though).

I get it like once a year, yep, on the computers I use full time for work and not work. That does not mean there are other times I will not have to force shut the thing, but not because kernel panics (eternal beach balls and such things).

      Danny, we need comment editing…

What I meant by "my experience has been the same in a 30 Macs office", I meant the same to the experience with my main computer, i.e. 1 or 2 kernel panics a year. When I was there, people would come panicking just as their kernerls (hehe) asking what that was, since they had never seen one after years of working with their machine (of course, they are not allowed to mingle with software installations either, so software-wise, it is a quite controlled environment).

Yeah, I agree with elmimmo. There is definitely something wrong. I haven't had a kernel panic in years. And the only times I did have them was when I had some bad RAM in my PowerMac, but after I swapped it out, the problems permanently went away. Since then I used a number of other Macs and never had any KPs. Well, just once in my MBP but iduno, it happen once and never again....

What I would recommend is that you run all the RAM in your machines though some tests because you may very well find that some of it is bad.

Please take a look at this little utility - http://www.memtestosx.org/

Lemme know how it turns out. I'm curious....

I probably would have already bought a Mac, if I didnt live in a dumbass country like South Africa. Macs are about 30% more expensive here than in the US, and there is NO service here if something goes wrong with the Mac, because it is only sold by third party resellers, not Apple.

Ah, the joys of living in a third world country.

Mostly because I am like irem. I use a Sony Vaio laptop as well (my Mac is an iMac G4) but not entirely happy... especially since it was a custom order. Dead pixels in one spot, bad mouse pad, and issues with with the programs.

The old Apple G-series computers were very well-made machines that were also unique in the desktop market because of their IBM processors. Its too bad that Apple switched to Intel processors, because now the only things differentiating them from other manufacturer's and custom built machines is the logo, OS, and exorbitant price. I would have liked to see Apple stick to IBM processors and produce machines using POWER6 and the upcoming POWER7 architectures, or perhaps even Cell.

Although I would never buy an Apple now, I did have an old PowerPC-based Mac when I was young, and I had fond memories of playing the Marathon series (made by Bungie, makers of Halo). It was one of the few Mac-exclusive games, and probably one of the best first person shooters in terms of storytelling and gameplay alike. Beyond that though, I never used it for much, and when I built my first PC after that, I never looked back at Apple (you can say I'm a rare Apple-to-Windows convert, or a switch-backer :P).

    Hmm i never found the difference between Finder and Explorer that bad, worked with both just fine. ^^;
Though nowdays i virtualize a lot of my machines for their tasks, so geting a NAS or even SAN with a server that just provides the calculating power for the virtual machines is my personal way to go.
It's more power efficent, compact and depending on your hardware (server hardware most likely is anyhow) very redunant.
Of course virtualizing Mac OSX doesn't quiet work that well and actually Apple does forbid on doing so, i got a virtual Mac OSX anyhow but just to toy with it.
But there are plenty of other OSs out there who provide every kind of service you could wish on a Mac too. ;)

ORZ iMac... sry but I just hate their "new" design. The iMac G4 design was cool but the new ones are just.. DO NOT WANT! + They don't have much harddrive space and only dualcore CPUs, and I would like to use my screens and other peripherals not the Apple stuff. Isn't 20" a little bit small btw?

I'm a PC user since years, but I tried OSX a few months back and I would really like to switch to Mac. The only problem is: They are so expensive! The only option would be the new 8core Mac Pro cause the Mini has not very much power and space and I mentioned my personal problem with the iMac above.

      i'm telling you

      i've building PCs for 16 years (i'm 30 now)

i can't remember the number of times i had a blue screen or fatal error which made me unable to reboot my computer and start windows

if i count the number of times and express it in days or nights, out of 16 years, i probably spent 1 or 2 months reformatting and reinstalling windows

even if i win a contest and get a pc for free, i swear that i will never use a PC again

i've been using Macs for the last 2-3 years: 0 freeze, 0 problem !

      statistically there is no match

i think this war pc vs mac is really stupid but once you've switched to mac, you can really tell the difference...

Not to insult anybody here, but if you build a PC and experience frequent BSODs and crashing with it, that generally means its something YOU did wrong. Too many people are too quick to blame the software or hardware when its something they set up incorrectly. Apple takes that out of the equation by holding your hand and putting on training wheels with the software and artificially limiting the number of hardware that is supported.

well, windows is definitely not the most reliable OS

for instance, you can have a device installed already

you unplug from its USB port and plug it on another one, and windows can sometimes ask you again to install the drivers...

that's one example out of many...

but i'm sure the discussion can last an eternity, if people are happy with windows and PCs, well, good for them

          that was not my case

          that's all

now that i'm so happy with my mac, i'm trying to replace every year one of our PCs by a mac...

at the end, our house will be fully equipped with Macs

I started out with a TRS-80, later I went to an apple then an amiga then to power macs then I built my first pc which was followed by 6 more. Now I have a box built because it was cheaper than building my own plus my wife has one and I have a dead imac first gen and a second gen imac thats collecting dust because osx 10.4 is a royal pain so most likely I will be installing ubuntu on it soon for my own learning purposes.

I love macs because they work so much better than pc's with windows on them and the games tend to be considerably better in all aspects. What I hate about macs is the cost per unit and the lack of second and third party hardware out there which has made the cost so high.

    That new iMac looks cool. Thin and no bulky system unit to worry about. Then again, Macs have always been aesthetically good looking and you pay the price for it ^^;

PCs aren't far behind in the aesthetics department these days but, I think I still prefer the big bulky custom built machine because, I can recycle parts when I need more power and capacity while keeping the costs down at the same time. There's such a wide range of parts. You can choose the cheapest or the best of components and it's easier to replace faulty parts yourself too.

On the other hand, those flat key keyboards would really be welcome to save catching all the dirt and what nots!

I think the wireless idea is great too because it's probably more effective than having the chain stores like McDonalds running access points. I'm not too sure about having everyone connected to the same network security wise though...

Macs are too expensive for me; especially with the ridiculous price premium - paying extra for older hardware and not having current hardware like Blu-Ray drives. The updates to the Mini should have had Blu-Ray drives. Steve Jobs complaining about the licensing requirements when Apple's lawyers regularly deal with labyrinthine legal requirements for iTunes was a cheap cop out.

I have high hopes for the rumored Apple Netbook, though. Any new computer I get will be used mainly for watching streaming video and accessing the 'nets, perfect for a netbook. That may very well be the first Mac I buy.

    Danny, I had the same issue of public/private network myself, when using another app. Before we went to a VPN, my solution was to use ssh to forward the proper port from the client machine, through the firewall, to the server--the firewall allowed just my IP through to make the ssh connection, and from there the easiest way was to run 'ssh -L port:localhost:port remotehost' from the client machine, then tell the app to connect to the localhost--I even did that across several machines, hopping repeatedly. Of course, firewalls can forward any port without the need for ssh, but that isn't secure at all. ^^;

I hesitate to say I'm a Mac user. I'm a Linux user first, but the Macbook Pro is my desktop machine of choice now! I still far, far prefer Linux on my servers, though.

I've been using Apple hardware since mid-2006. I never switched, just needed to coexist with both PC and Mac around, but I really like the simplicity and beauty of the OS X GUI. Also, hardware and software are tightly integrated, since Apple does it all.

But then you have the cons: their hardware is ridiculously overpriced. The upgrades are stupidly expensive except for very few exceptions, and the accessories are the most flagrant example of this. The Cinema displays are crappy and really expensive. For the price of one of those, you can get a true color monitor from HP (around 2k USD). I'm talking about a professional-grade monitor, 14-bit color channel depth, and all that...

They just started to realize this. For a slightly similar price, I have my 17" Sony Vaio VGN-AR71 with 500G disk (SATA2), 4G RAM, HDMI output at 1080p (with the same graphics card than the top line Macbook Pros) and bunch other extras (Bluray, etc). It's a roughly 1900 EUR machine back when I bought it (http://sp.sony-europe.com/media/53/26456). For about 500USD, I've got my 24" HP w2448hc with better color quality, sleek design and a great sliding engine (up/down and portrait mode).

If I could sell the Vaio for a decent price, I would likely be getting one of the new Macbook Pros, but I'm sure I will be doing the 'upgrades' at home, screwdriver on hand and so on ;)

Regarding the iMac... with all due respect, a computer built-in with a display is a recipe for fail. The day you start having trouble with the screen, you will be swearing at Apple almost immediately. I used them at work and I think it's great to avoid office clutter, but sorry, the idea still remains pretty bad. I don't know why you bought it to use as HTTP server, it's a waste of energy, resources and there goes money too. Just because we've got well paid jobs doesn't mean we have to waste the cash away on every shiny piece of technojunk released by Apple.

    My .02$ cents.

This post explains exactly why I stick to Windows or Linux, and why I will never switch to mac.

The Mac BSOD happens a few times a month? Last time I got a BSOD on Windows (Excluding the crappy computers at my school, which BSOD every 5 minutes) was almost 6 years ago. I've also found PCs to last significantly longer, as I still have that machine that BSOD'd 6 years ago and with a few updates, it runs perfectly. If they do break, it's easy enough to fix them on your own, or fairly cheap to replace entirely. The integrated screen LOOKS nice, but it's a recipe for disaster when you have to replace an entire computer because the moniter goes funky.

Ok I'm going to pick at this one because I don't believe that you have never seen the BSOD at all on a pc in 6 years. I've been building pc's for 12 years and using pc's since the later part of the 1970's before dos and with the start of windows 3.1 came the BSOD with every release of a new version all the way up to vista. During my life I have also used linux and unix as well as apple/macs os 6 to x10.5 and what ever it was that was on amiga's and out of all of these none was free from its own version of BSOD. Put any pc whether custom built or box built next to a mac and I hate to tell you this but macs can and do have a better history with BSOD's due to tighter control over hardware that is used within mac computers. IBM and microsoft have loose controls on hardware to the point that any fly by night company can make hardware for an IBM platform which is why you see some real junk at computer shows.

Kernal panics a couple of times a month? I only get them a couple of times a year at most!

I was brought up in a Mac-only household, so I've been using them since I was quite young, and I'd never switch to Windows. I use it when I have to, but I wouldn't want to buy one or use one regularly. I've had my current iMac for exactly three years today, it still runs just fine, and I've never had any especially serious problems with it. The speed could be better, but it's still very reasonable, and I'm getting a laptop in a few months, so I don't mind. I don't want to play PC video games, and the art software I own runs great on my iMac, so I have no reason to use anything other than Mac.

Typing this on a 2,5 year old MacBook, first Mac to end up in my greedy paws. Been using it since then to manage my contacts and media files and programming on WinXP through Bootcamp. Since I got the iPhone in august I've completely switched to Mac including the programming. I even got IE6 (using darwine) for testing so I almost never have to switch to XP unless there are some windows specific errors on my productions.

I'm going to get the new iMac (20" or 24"? decisions, decisions...) later this year and retire my linux box which houses the anime. I've never had a Mac BSOD myself, but I've seen it repeatedly on Macs from a graphics designer I know...

I use the PC (Windows). I'm an experience PC and Mac user though.

My computer 'career' actually started out with Macintosh in the 90's, I enjoyed the system and I can't recall having to many problems with it - keep in mind I didn't use it for much.
Around the end of the millenium, I got into using Windows 95 and 98, and later went on to use Windows 2000 and finally Windows XP. I have sticked to using XP since then. Despite switching over to PC in the 2000's, I have very well tasted everything in the later Apple world from the first iMac to iPod, to the latest OSX on a high-end machine.

I have never really liked this whole "i" franchise, starting with a disliking for the first iPod (I have never really had anything against the first iMac's). I find that most of it tend to focus a bit too much on appearance and similar while according to me too little on compability, customizability, good pricing, comfort and universality. The PC isn't perfect either - the PC's operative systems are mostly unstable if kept unaltered and it takes quite some experience to run a PC system smoothly and to also utilize its full power. I might also add that the Windows interfaces that they've tried to make good-looking are pretty much failures, but I'm not so bothered about appearances myself. Besides, I can alter the looks of Windows XP to make it look good and stylish without taking any performance power from the system, so I'm overall satisfied on that end.

I tell you what I think - the PC's and Macintosh are the best operative systems available that I know of - both have their strenghts and weaknesses. I prefer the PC (Windows), but I know why many thinks otherwise.

Unfortunately the combination of the price range for most new Macs and the fact that they aren't horribly gaming friendly is rather keeping me from buying one. Though I've had my eye on possibly getting a Mac mini or an iMac when I relocate in the summer. My current machine's a Vista 64-bit Gateway FX laptop, which is absolutely awesome for gaming. The best way to run Windows is virtualized under Mac on Intel. Same with Linux, although I've been impressed with Linux performance on Apple hardware, both PowerPC and Intel architecture.

Boot Camp did it for me. ^^; I run a Macbook Pro with Tiger and Vista. Haven't bothered to upgrade to Leopard since nothing I use on Mac really needs it.

I second your complaints with the Mac file/folder interface. Windows Explorer is leaps and bounds ahead of it in that area in my opinion - it's the main reason why I actually run Vista more often than OSX on my Mac. ^^; I don't generally boot in OSX until I need to work with video.

I'm not sure about the games that won't run on OSX thing - there isn't a single game I own for which I have both Windows and OSX copies.

What I *can* tell you is that Vista runs silky-smooth - it's basically running Vista as if OSX isn't there, because Boot Camp partitions the HDD and Vista can't even see the Mac side. The irony, of course, is that the Macbook Pro runs Vista better than a lot of Windows machines. Still not worth the price premium if you don't ever use OSX though.

I really enjoyed your Mac article and came away with a good tip too. I need to give teleport a try. I use ARD, but if another Mac is on the same desk, teleport may be faster solution.

I have seen the Mac 'Blue Screen of Death' on my Mac Mini. I have the first version that came out with a PowerPC processor. Back then my Mini was having issues. Though I did not know it, my Mini was overheating. It damaged my hard drive over a short period. I replaced the hard drive and it was fine for a while until the "Spinning Beach" or Kernel Alerts resulted.

I noticed the cooling fan was running more than usual. I decided to leave off the cover. It is so much of a hassle to remove the cover. As a result, the Mini ran without issues. As of today it remains sans cover.

Love XP because I use it at school and most of my computers at home are XP. I hate Vista which I am currently using on my HP TX2000 notebook. I love the computer but hate the OS. I fiddled around with a Mac and I love them. I want one of the Macbook Pros that you have or a new aluminum Macbook.

I dislike the Mac OS. I haven't worked with the newest (OS X) but I have disliked every Mac I have used before. And killed about half of them. That could be the software I used to use (AutoCAD and other drafting software, oder FORTRAN coding programs) but I found that PCs are more robust. And cheaper to build/maintain. I am not against trying a Mac with the newest OS on it, but expense also keeps me from using it. Now, if someone wants to give me a free MacBook Pro, that has enough RAM for me to run Windows 7 under a virtual machine.....

My mum used to/kind of still does practise Feng Shui. I have to admit, some of it has rubbed off on me, but only some of the things that make sense. Like not having your back face the door in an office or having the foot of your bed face the door. (I hate people tickling my feet.) I quite like windchimes as well, so an excuse to put loads of them up is great.

I wish electricity could be transmitted wirelessly as well. It'd make carrying a laptop around so much easier and you wouldn't have to worry about finding a plug.

That's a lot of dust in that Mac Mini though. I hope you cleaned that out while you were replacing the drive.
Looking at that new iMac almost makes me want to get one. Almost. I'm not sure I could handle the OS shock if I switched over. Especially since I'm sure the problem would be compounded by the fact I've learnt all these Windows shortcuts for PhotoShop which, while similar to the Apple shortcuts, are not the same.
Strangely though, once I've fiddled with the Mac file browser for about five minutes, I become used to it. Except I can see it's no good for people who like to create directories within directories ad infinitum.

It runs incredibly well, actually. I've even managed to run CS2 on it, but it's slow. I mean, it's a netbook.

The only things that don't work are the ethernet and the built-in mic. Also, the S10e can be purchased with bluetooth, but that doesn't work either.

My solution to these issues is a USB headset for mic purposes, the built-in wifi for internet, and a USB bluetooth dongle for my mouse, keitai, etc.

When I migrated to Mac initially from Linux (immediately after Leopard came out, Mac OS X was unusable before that), it came as a shock that it crashed frequently (read, many times a day).
I used good instructions here http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2118.html to capture kernel crashdumps and submit them to apple (bugreport.apple.com). Surprisingly, in just a week (long by my standards, but still not all that bad) I got a fixed kernel that stopped crashes I was experiencing.
Then with next update, different kind of crashes started to happen every time I use usb headset to make calls on skype. Again, captured a crashdump, and got a fix with next update.
So it might be worth trying, if it nags you.

I now only see infrequent crashes in smbfs module sometimes when I move my Mac somewhere with samba resource mounted where this resource is no longer available,
unfortunately that also means I cannot capture the dump then as well, and apple does not have a way to store the dump locally, only should be done via network (worse than that, only wired works, not even wifi).

        true, but if I do that, I'd still end up using windows rather than the Mac OS. Alternatively I could probably use compatible linux ubuntu hacks to run windows dlls. but it would be too much of a hassle, in the end I'd be spending more time fixing it than doing actual work. ^^;

Danny you can transmit electricity over long distances thou the air just look at some of the work of Nikola Tesla, and nature does it every day it's called lighting. ;-)

The downside to going very large scale (ie get rid of power line to peoples house) with wireless electricity is interference. Basically you would lose all radio, television, cell phones, ect.

Intel cuts electric cords with wireless power system

      Aug 21, 2008

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) — Intel on Thursday showed off a wireless electric power system that analysts say could revolutionize modern life by freeing devices from transformers and wall outlets.

Intel chief technology officer Justin Rattner demonstrated a Wireless Energy Resonant Link as he spoke at the California firm's annual developers forum in San Francisco.

Electricity was sent wirelessly to a lamp on stage, lighting a 60 watt bulb that uses more power than a typical laptop computer.

Most importantly, the electricity was transmitted without zapping anything or anyone that got between the sending and receiving units.

"The trick with wireless power is not can you do it; it's can you do it safely and efficiently," Intel researcher Josh Smith said in an online video explaining the breakthrough.

"It turns out the human body is not affected by magnetic fields; it is affected by elective fields. So what we are doing is transmitting energy using the magnetic field not the electric field."

Interesting, will have to look into it.

The big thing I see is that while "the human body is not affected by magnetic fields", all those people with large chunks of metal in there chests ie pacemaker and defibrillator would have to be. Pacemaker wearers have to watch out for microwave oven's let alone large magnetic fields.

I have friends and relatives who keep telling me to go get a mac... they annoy me... a LOT. So much that I won't even consider getting a mac in the future.

My cousin payed more than twice what I payed for his mac than what I did for my laptop. The only difference in specs was that his had a bigger screen and his HD was a 320 while mine was 250. In order to convert me to mac-ism, he actually challenged me to a stand off using our laptops. To put it simply: anything his mac could do, my PC could do the same. In fact there were a lot of things I could do with my PC that he couldn't do with his mac. The only thing mine can't do is that windows emulation but I have no need for that.

I'm running vista business and it runs perfectly since it's just a simple matter of tweaking things to suit the programs. I'd rather have something that I can customize to meet my every demand rather than something that's hyped and overpriced.

If there's something I'm missing here, something that I can't do anything about that makes a mac better than a PC, please enlighten me. Seriously, is there a really good reason why mac is superior? They're both the same thing underneath so why does the overpriced one gets so much praise?

Since I'll be using this comp for development work I'd like it to be reliable (for reduced downtime, I'm not convinced that hackintoshs are really reliable).

Ah, the G5s. My roommate's got a G5 iMac, and it too is very noisy compared to my own Intel model. The G5s run extremely hot compared to the Intels at least--in fact, I suspect that's part of why Apple decided to switch to the Intels in the first place. An extra fan or a watercooling system might have quieted down that tower, but since you've already returned it, well, it's kind of a moot point.

It's weird that you get kernel panics so frequently when I don't think I've gotten a single one since I got mine two and a half years ago. The only time I've gotten one was on one of my school's Macs, but that's not terribly surprising--due to the fact that the lazy IT guys are the only ones with the password to run any maintenance on those things, they haven't seen so much as a disc permission fix since they were purchased.

And as a side note--*dollfie oggling*

Apple moved away from PowerPC because of several reasons. One of them is the heat, another is the power usage (those two are linked together). This made it impossible to make a G5 PowerBook. Apple also claimed that they didn't like the future plans for PowerPC. I suspect that there are also unpublished reasons, like payment for CPUs and stuff.

I was kind of disapointed with my iMac G5. Way too noisy and it turned out that the CPU were quite hot. I made a series of tests and the result is the following:
low power setting: 60°C @ idle and 70°C @ full load
high power setting: 70°C @ idle and 80°C @ full load
automatic power setting: can't remember idle, but full load made it hit 85°C and the overheating protection forced the CPU to idle until the core was around 75°C and then it heated up to 85°C again and repeated the cycle. You could hear the fan going up and down.

Based on this I recommend low power setting for normal usage and high power setting for when you need a lot of CPU time or low lag at the CPU (low power setting means that the CPU works in bursts and forces idle cycles, but the clock speed is unchanged). Automatic power setting is really bad. It heats up the CPU more than high and it works slower. The computer freezes when it goes from 85°C to 75°C.

For comparison my intel iMac (first generation) have a CPU temperature of around 50°C when both cores are fully loaded. It's also really silent compared to the G5. It's not completely mute though.

As for kernel panics, I only got those when I asked for it. Basically I added unsupported 3rd party hardware. It worked most of the time, but I needed a few kernel panics to figure out what caused it in order to fix it and after making a workaround I ended up with a stable system again.

I think I know the reason why the DVD drive is on the side. If it is on the top, then it will be hit by dust (I had to clean my lense once even though the drive is in the side). You could place it with input from below, but my setup would cause that to give too little room between the table and the computer meaning I couldn't insert discs. I once had a setup where I had a monitor to the right of the iMac, making inserting DVDs interesting. I use the drive less than once a week though, but it's not a major issue for me.

Mac gets my vote, they are just so damn versatile in terms of what you can produce on them. My MacBook Pro has a 500GB drive with 4GB of ram, OS 10.5.6 and XP SP3 for stuff like Microsoft Visio and a couple of XP Games. But I hardly use it, it's just good to have for school.

Really whatever OS you are on is just matter of what you can do, and wether or not it's you "flavor" some prefer chocolate some prefer vanilla :-)

woohoo, fon stuff! you should flash it with dd-wrt if you can, could with old models anyway.

and fwiw, you don't need a la fonera to run a fon hotspot (or get the benefits - money, worldwide access, etc). I spent a year putting together this guide:

    http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/FON_Hotspot

I've only done it on a WRT54G running DD-WRT myself, but you could probably get it on anything that'll run chillispot and allow some basic scripts to run.

As you already know I'm thinking of getting a mac, but i have a few questions that need to be answered before i make the step i feel like a noob asking but I've only played around with a mac a few times before during visual arts class so here goes.

1: Does the mac need any anti virus programs installed on it or does it already have its own system running if not then which is the best anti virus program to purchase?

2: I have video files that are in a different format does the mac convert them into its own video files in any such way or is there a program available to do so (have rmvb, avi, mkv and mp4/mpeg4 files)?

3: What is the best media player on the mac for playing most if not all video files?

4: Is the iMac compatible with my modem (D-Link DSL-G604T) or is better for me to have an air port card installed to connect wireless to the network?

I have tons and tons of movies and anime on my current PC and wanting to know if i can play them on a mac because right now I'm using zoom player with the CCCP Codec to play and watch all my subtitled anime. And one last question does any of these programs run on a mac utorrent, flashget and limewire?

      2. Sorry, dont know about that.

      3. I'm using MPlayer Extended.

      4. Not sure but it should work.

I'm not sure about flashget, but P2Ps in general release Mac versions as well.
      I'm using Azureus btw.

Anyway on topic, yup obviously, I'm on Mac. But that's for my Laptop, only about a year. My old desktop PC is still an XP however, in the future when I do go for upgrade, it'll most likely be a Mac.

1: it's a myth that there aren't any risk with a mac. However at the moment it's only proof of concept for a real virus. There are malware (or spyware), but they have problems being distributed. They have strange pages with 3D girl movies and then they claim that quicktime needs a plugin in order to play the movies. In order to install it, you need to enter the root password. I'm told that the movies will still not work after you do, but you will get a nice infection. I'm not scared at the moment, but the future might not be this bright.

2: that shouldn't be any harder than on linux. I haven't had the need to do so myself so I haven't investigated this. Google and/or versiontracker.com should be able to help you here.

      3: http://perian.org/
This one installs a whole lot of codec and then quicktime can play everything (more or less) quite good. It's my impression that it's the best. VLC works quite well too, but it has problems with A_S_S (read without the _) subtitles and sadly this is the most common for fansubs. It's a nice subtitle format so I blame VLC for this one, not the fansubs.

4: generally OSX can connect to everything where you connect with tcp though ethernet. It natively supports both IP4 and IP6. OSX also natively supports IP multihoming where you have multiple IPs on the same port (windows doens't, at least not XP).

I've been PC all my life, but I've used Macs several times. They are incredibly sexy, and I plan on making the switch when I get enough funds (several years from now).

Something I've been wondering, how much space is in those helmets, enough perhaps for a small digital camera for POV shots? Or maybe to set up some ventilation and thats about it.
If you keep having problems with fogging I have a suggestion from a friend, use 409 or similar spray lubricant/cleaner to polish the inside of the visor sections, this left over oil should prevent any moisture from sticking to the lenses.

^It depends on the helmet and the size of your head really. I have an FX helmet and I have (broken v_v) fans and a sound system in it because its a bit oversized and has alot of space the helmet danny has is a SDS if I'm not mistaken and its smaller so if you have a big head like me you might not be able to fit anything in there

I'm personally not a mac user because the software packages I need to run have much older builds on the Mac Platform.
But I really do like their design and functionality choices ! That's a great looking office setup !

I've been using a mac since the start of the year. So far, i haven't had any problem yet, except it hangs once so far, earlier today while i was viewing DC.. maybe my mac doesn't like DC. But i don't seem to have any problem and i havent seen the Mac Blue Screen of Doom. But.. my lack of $$ means that no windows means no eroge..ahem games.. and no upgrade to 10.6 .. I generally prefer mac to windows but i don't think i'll buy as many mac as you did O.O
