A Week in Tokyo 35

Another great and productive week. Business at Mirai Inc has been going swimmingly well and looks like we will be hiring sooner rather than later to manage the amount of clients projected for this year.
First photo is of Kenji Hall from Business Week at the office. Hmmmmm.
The glassboard on the back has some doodles regarding the order pipeline for Mirai Gaia which we are focusing on now for a few launches in April/May.

Trying to get used to my heavy suddenly acquired mouse - the Logitec M-RBQ124. Its got some sort of gear inside which automatically switches depending on how fast you scroll.
Logitec is actually called Logicool in Japan because there was already a company called Logitec who also sells computer peripherals ^^; Just browsing round their HP and spotted these nice slot in HDD cases.

Pizza lunch - 1,200 yen.

Ai Shinozaki on the cover of Young Jump.

Disposing of some ancient drives - I usually physically destroy them before throwing them out - zeroing out the drive takes too much time sometimes.

Recently got hold of a cheap secondhand PowerMac G5 from a friend. Was going to use it for serving up some images but it kept hanging after installing Leopard. Also made a load of noise even when doing simple tasks. Took it back for a refund after a few days. Boot up time was lightning though. Anybody else have probs with a G5?

With good comrade Hideki Francis Onda. An entrepreneur who owns Tunewear and Focal - he manufactures and sells a load of Apple related products and owns companies all over za warudo. He also used to be the Sales Director at Apple.

Checking out Francis-sans Canon EOS 5D Mark II which also shoots incredible video - a sample below. Camera and lense together cost about 300,000 yen.

Porsche is just one of the tons of cars that Francis owns. The CEO of Good Smile Aki-san also has a ton of cars. Wonder if I will catch this "car thing" too ^^; I do know that my next car will be the Fairlady Z though. Am looking for a decent scale completed model of it with no luck.

In the stockroom area of Focal - a ton O yummy Mac accessories. Do you bother to buy accessories for your iPods/iPhone? I went and got a case for my iPod Touch but only used it for a while - the iPod Touch is quite a tough nut and no scratches on the screen so far. Got a few scratches on the back but not too bothered.
Up until now we've used 4 models of iPod so far. My next one will be the new iPhone rumored to be out in June. Softbank dropping the price to zero yen and ending the campaign at the end of May was too obvious ^^;

A leaflet delivered by the local fire brigade during a visit. From April 1st 2010, all residences in Japan will be required to install smoke detectors. Folks in Japan can download more info about this from the Tokyo Fire Department.
We don't have any right now but will pick some up soon. We've even seen folks handing them out in the streets but personally would not advise on using them - could potentially be tapped with a listening device.
Listening devices or "Touchouki" [盗聴器] seem to be a problem in Japan and one regularly sees news of them on TV. This site has photos of an electrical adapter showing a how it has been rigged with a hidden microphone. The electricity will continue to power the microphone and the signals are usually picked up nearby. Many of the victims of these devices seem to be young females.
Back to the leaflet - notice the "22" - thats the Japanese year for 2010. You can use thisyear.jp when you forget which Japanese year it is - I forget all the time.

A slight pose shift for Saber Mirai. Hmmmm. Maybe she would like to try on a Haruka uniform version too *calls chun*

Have had bad handwriting since a kid. But also noticed that with many computer engineers too ^^; Sometimes my writing is so illegible that I have difficulty trying to figure out notes that I write for myself ^^; Been looking for a simple recording device to take voice notes. There was a watch by Casio that records voice notes many moons ago but they don't make em anymore. Any recommendations?

The farm of Mac Mini's grows in size - now four of them. The new one was suddenly acquired ^^;
One of the machines has been serving up most of the static images and seems to be doing a good job of late. Got more plans for the farm in the near future.
Have learned a lot about how to set up and run servers at home and how to run dozens of sites on one IP address using ProxyPass and ProxyPassReverse in the httpd-vhosts.conf file of Apache 2.
ProxyPass is configured on the machine accepting HTTP requests which are being directed from the router on port 80. The machine accepting the HTTP requests then forwards something like moo.dannychoo.com to another internal machine at 192.168.111.20. Use the following in a VirtualHost tag.
ServerName moo.dannychoo.com
ServerAlias moo.dannychoo.com
ProxyPass / http://192.168.112.20/
ProxyPassReverse / http://192.168.112.20/
Anybody here running a server at home?

In some restaurants in Japan, you will come across "ladies lunch sets." I was told that it means that the portions are small but has more variety and that men are welcome to order them. I remember asking if I could order a ladies set a a sushi bar - the sushi master said "only if you are a bit queer" and I replied "you bet."

Trying out a local place that we haven't tried out yet. Notice the lady with purple hair. Not sure why but many elderly ladies over here have their hair dyed purple.

Networking event at Appliya - the folks making all the Evangelion iPhone apps.

One of the folks I met that evening heard that I was coming so brought along this Vader light saber that he picked up in an auction. He wouldn't tell me the exact price but said "yeah thats about right" when I guessed 30,000 UK pounds!

Checking out a comrades iPhone and the apps he has installed. Forgot the name of this app but of you blow into the mic, her skirt lifts up and she goes "kya!"

More moesome iPhone apps. He also runs a popular iPod site called iPod Style.

Some absolutely gorgeous pair of suddenly acquired headphones - a gift from Francis - available at his online store for 14,800 yen.

Lately I keep all figure boxes but then throw them out after deciding on the figures that I really want to keep. Figures that I don't want go back in the box and usually go to the next folks who visit our office.

The latest promo at Mc Dees involve baseball players - you can collect all 8 clear folders but they don't seem to be proactive in giving them out - only if you ask for one.

Tommy Lee Jones looks after the ads for Boss can coffee over here - one of my faves below and more at Japan Probe.

Cherry blossom in our local park. Will be taking time out to see more during the Hanami season. Check out some pics from our previous Hanami trip at Mitsuike Park.

Diving through the clear roads of the metropolis at night listening to some cool Ridge Racer R4 tunes.

Motorbike full O neon lights. Tried to look for something adaptable for my armor but all I found were stuff for cars or bikes that needed to be plugged into big batteries. I could modify but am lousy at electronics.
If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

Btw why is it fairlady Z? I thought it was called a 370Z? no? Maybe it's a Japan thing.
And not too sure about the chemist thing, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't make sense when you say "picking up some chemistry" lol. Some people in the UK call it a pharmacy too.

Erm if I am not wrong its 'full name' is Nissan 350Z Fairlady. I guess the model is 350Z while the 'codename' is fairlady. Heard somewhere from one of my car-fanatic female friend that this car is apparently designed by a lady. I didnt check it up though. So i could be wrong >.<
Mail reader
its the fairlady in japan because all cars have awesome names in japan... while in US, a car with must be either a lame eco car or super sport car.
example:
- eco car: civic, camery, etc
- luxury but not super sport car: Mercedes E350, S550, S65, etc
- super sport car: Gallardo, Enzo, etc.

I currently have a 3rd gen iPod nano. I got it as a gift after my 1st gen died. But seeing how the current iPod nano looks, as well as the iPod touch... as well as specks of dirt getting under my iPod... I plan to find a way to get a red next-gen iPod nano. Maybe an iPod touch.
But I definitely want to upgrade to the latest iMac since I have a G4 and a Sony Vaio laptop. Not happy with the laptop due to numerous issues. I mean... LOOK! They are giving out Dragon Ball Z toys at McDonald's!

well the ear buds do work, after you spend about 15 minutes on public transport looking like a twit while trying to force them into your ear. Then suddenly they sorta fit and noise from the outside world ceases...all there is is your music from misc mp3 player. kinda surreal really.

Ear buds work better in noise cancellation. The bass also sounds better than most other regular earphones excluding those high end ones which cost a bomb.
I personally prefer ear buds since they are more comfortable to put on for long periods of listening. Earphones usually cause slight pain/discomfort for me after around an hour of use.

Also i agree with NPC, why would one pay for earphones that cost around $148 that's pretty much day-light robbery, it better be able to do something special heh. But getting free is a different story ^_^
i own a ipod shuffle, and to be honest, Apple could of designed the docking charger abit more sturdy, the metal part, i think its called a 'jack', bends easily. Gonna be staying away from shuffles >_<

Haha... I own those exact v-moda earphones except mine are chrome silver. Great bass and very clear, but I wish it had a legit case instead of that pouch. Heard good and bad things about them, but so far no problems for me.
Use to house my ipod touch in a nice leather case, but the humidity in China totally wrecked it. I dropped my ipod before, so it has a ding in the corner, but no internal damage. Now I just have it in one of those silicon cases which does a good job in protecting it casing, and allows easy access to the screen.

That looks like one hot bowl of curry Mikuru served up. About hand writing. I can't even read my own signature lol. Was a self automechanic changing out transmissions, engines, rebuilding so I busted my hands up when wrenches and pry bars slipped a lot. Then forever I did tree trimming every house we were owned and wrapped rope around my hand to pull it tight, the cut wood, pulling the branches from a big pile into a small deal that would roll easily. Well ended up cracking my hands down the center in a way. I can type but hurts to hold a writing pen for a minute.
I can suggest what I also am trying, get a tablet pc / pen deal and practice your signature and some words daily till you can sign your name like a professional race car driver... :D

I bought the first iPod (5 GB) a month after its release back in 2001. It was an impulse buy to celebrate my job offer from another company, my second job in Manhattan with a much better salary. My second and current iPod is the forth generation (20 GB click wheel). It was an eBay second hand purchase which had j-tunes, that was the main selling point. It was my first introduction to Japanese pop, rock, etc music, that was in 2004.

I've got the same thing -> iPod touch 16GB in the Belkin case... Seems like everyone's got that case!
Anyway, when I bought my touch it was just a month or so before the $100 price cuts/new models... I knew it was coming, but I just needed a new touch right away. Was kinda angry at first, but I got a good deal on a new one on ebay and I'm very happy with it.

I've got a rubberized/silicone protector for my 32GB iTouch and the back is scratched pretty badly too I must say. I think its much worse with the case on. But there are other types of cases which can prevent such scratches.
One good one is by NeoTouch. There's an additional layer thingy between the case and the surface of the back to prevent the case from scratching the surface of the iTouch.
Another good protector is by BodyGuardz, though its not really a case per se. More like a plastic coating/screen protector thingy which covers the whole body. More info can about it here http://www.bodyguardz.com/

I run a server with Server 2008 Pro. While Mac OSes are nice and easy to use they actually are the least secure OS. You don't hear about it because Macs only have like 5-10% of the market so people don't actively attack it like Windows. I'm not as crazy as a friend who runs server 2008 then runs virtual machines for server core, linux, unix and sharepoint.

wooo nice week :D I love the home cooking features :D your waifu is goodo cook ^^;/ Will discuss in detail about ahem outfit ahem lol!
Another beautiful week in Tokyo. I got a hardshell acrylic case for my iPod Touch. It's nifty because it comes with a built-in stand on the back for easy viewing and use while I eat.
Oh and that app where you can interact with 3d characters, i.e. blowing on mic = panchira, is called iDollViewer by JETMAN. Fun 5* app.
**built-in folding stand.
I lost the tiny, clear plastic stand that came with my iPod only a few days later.
Funny how the whole world appears to be collapsing in the business realm, yet Danny is chugging on like nothing has changed. I wish i was in a area of business that was virtually unaffected by this poor economic climate. Not only is your business growing, but you still get all sorts of free items every week!! Danny i hope you count your blessings every day, because it's pretty rough for lots of folks out there now. ^_^
Never owned an ipod/iphone they are out my price range. I'd like the phone, but the ipod would be pretty useless for my lifestyle.

I've got an older model 30gb ipod, but I'm annoyed with Apple. Not 3 months after I buy my 30gb when they announced they were phasing those models out and dropping the 80gb ones to the same price point. I'm tempted to buy an ipod touch but I can't help but get the nagging impression Apple will end up doing the same thing less than a month after I get it if I do. >.>

I'm still unsure as to whether to get an iPhone. I'm waiting until my current contract for my mobile finished, way in July. Only problem is, I've already got an iPod classic 80GB and an iPhone costs quite a bit of money. For every reason I can think of getting an iPhone, I can think of another to not get one. Hopefully its true about a newer model with possibly more memory coming out in the summer.

Also is that Fairlady Z your interested in the 370 Z or an alternate 350 Z? If its the 370 Z then we may be pursuing the same car, though I am waiting for a Nismo edition if one is made. :)

hello Danny, a comment for the photo:
I regret that the Italian style pizza made in a rubber like Daikanyama and apparently only the style that resembles.
pc or mac high power (for its class) are always a bit of noise you can make to resolve fan with lower rpm but you should know that the average temperature increases of work.
My website on the web / ftp server in a garage pc P3-1ghz, 512mb ram, 200GB hdd, Wakeup-on-lan enabled, windows xphome.
The new seat "Italian", around the corner .... beautiful,
but you know that garlic is very good but without exaggeration;
it seems that that type of bread or Focaccia with oregano and olive oil, but I do not know what we do with the "pasta".
The "pasta" is fine by itself, no need to accompany it.
I like both the ramen, yakisoba, and that one photo must be delicious.

Thx Danny for another awesome article ^^. As for the handwriting, sorry but, i have a really neat handwriting! Don't know quite sure how but I remember having an awful handwriting when me was a kid, I was living in Colombia back then. But i'm grateful now because everyone says i have a neat handwriting, i should post it one day as news. I myself own an iPhone 16Gb Black. I just got a replacement as there are no repair center in Singapore. My iPhone went kaput on me during CNY 2009. My iPhone looks kawaii without a cover, so why dressing up one for? For accessories, I bought a belt pouch, a 3rd-party USB to iPhone connector and an anti-glare screen protector for my iPhone. Also bought an Apple Universal Dock to charge and sync.
The laksa looks great and I love the prawns un-shelled and the stock looks the perfect colour. The cucumber for the chicken rice are a bit elongated. Is that cucumber a local produce? Never seen one like that here. As for the rice and chicken, it looks like its from Singapore. As I'm just join dannychoo.com recently, I just want to know is your wife from the same locale as you, British Chinese?

Used to spend hours on G5s when I did my Masters at uni. Probably the most volatile Mac machines I've ever used IMO, as they actually crashed/restarted quite often during my uni days. When I got my iPhone, I quickly and regretably picked an EXO silicone case for it. Didn't like it much as it had a weird rubber texture and would pick up any type of lint or fluff from my pockets (it was black). Then my waifu found a Griffin Wave (black & clear) case (http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/wave3g) and it's the best one I've seen for the iPhone. It hugs it really nice and doesn't add any bulk to the size or weight. Feels great & doesn't slip on any surface. Has a semi-clear back that lets you still see the shiny Apple logo. The design is kinda of reminescent of the original iMacs.
MMmmmm, love a good bowl of hot spicy laksa myself, too. I like how they have the 2 different noodles in there.
My hand writing IMO is pretty awful but legible if I'm not in much of a hurry. Although female friends have said that I have pretty nice hand writing for a guy! Don't know if that's a compliment or an insult!?! : As for voice recording or taking audio notes, I'd recommend you hold off until you get your new iPhone, Danny. Since the currently 3G version have voice record and you can always get the Evernote app (http://evernote.com/about/download/iphone/) for it. From what I've read, it's a pretty cool app for taking any sort of notation including audio/voice recording.

Danny, I can't understand how you would call your writing bad. I mean sure, I guess it could be improved, but we can read it, right? In Grade 7, I had to do hundreds of those letter-tracing sheets that teachers give to kindergarteners to learn to write. It helped somewhat, but my writing still resembles a continuous line when I am in a hurry.

I don't know if there's any laws requiring smoke detectors over here or not (there probably are, and it's probably left up to individual states), but I've never even been in a house without one. Even that scary old house from the 1940's with the lead pipes that was on the tick's knickers that sucks the back end of nowhere I lived in ages ago had one.
As for portable voice recording devices, I do know that there are some that connect to iPods and the like, though I don't know the details of them. It would be a good idea to look into one, I think, since you're looking to get an iPhone which you'll probably be tethered to anyway. =P

For a pen that has a voice recording tool, I think it was called a SMART Pen. basically when you write a note and talk it records your voice and takes note of the location of the dots where you wrote. So touching what you wrote with the tip of your pen will playback what you said.
